  1. I miss soda and alcohol lol ...

  2. SOOOOO....how long do you have to wait to have alcohol???

  3. Are there any sleevers out there who are in recovery from drug addiction/alcoholism?? I have been in recovery for 6 years and would love to be able to talk with someone about cross addiction and the different issues I may face now that I no longer have food to manage my emotions. Thanks!

  4. found a loophole so I could drink vodka and grapefruit juice. . I take a prilosec before and I am able to drink alcohol just like before.. so I have been drinking for the past week and gained back 2lbs. I have decided to stop drinking since it defeats the purpose of me trying to be successful with my wls. So disappointed in myself that I let it get out of hand. I have been under some stress lately and it was a poor way to cope. Tomorrow is a new day and another opportunity to get back on track.

Grapefruit juice interferes with meds. Be careful. I don't believe in loopholes. The scales won't lie.

Right. Good thing I am not on meds.

Must be something in the water....I have been back to some bad habits the last couple weeks too. Things getting to me more then they should. Be careful, not only did you gain, but you don't want something like alcohol replacing a food addiction/crutch. I only say this because I care.

  5. It's very interesting to me that some people are SO in-tune with their bodies, they just *know* that they will be fine if they hurry through the food stages or drink alcohol early. If I was that in-tune with mine, I never would have needed WLS to begin with. I am SUPER jealous.

  7. Summer.... Oh the love hate relationship!  It's absolutely my favorite time of the year... shorts, t-shirts, pool time, boat time, ANYTHING outdoors... yeah... including BBQ's and alcohol.   UGH -  BBQ and Alcohol.  I LOVE to cook out, have friends and family over, chill.... and drink... I probably sound like a raving lunatic right now, but I just can't seem to stop myself.  I'm in a self induced stall with just over 30lbs left to lose.   Monday morning until Friday afternoon, I'm a poster child for VSG -  Let Friday afternoon and socializing come around, I'm an insane woman.  Seriously, Salted Caramel Crown Royal just tastes SO GOOD... paired with some cheese and crackers -  OMG, I can't stop myself from indulging a bit.  So whatever I lost during the week.... back on Monday morning.  Just being accountable, I know what I need to do...

Salted Caramel Crown Royal...ummmm, yes PLEASE! And, I can totally relate to your post!!

Haha! It’s LETHAL! And dammit man, I just found 4 more bottles of it last week (it’s seasonal so I’ll have to wait until October or so for more..).

just a funny, my father (who wasn’t thinking) brought over small frosty’s for the whole family. I declined with the rationalization that I could have 3 shots of crown for the same calories! Proud of myself for declining both!

  8. I am about 31/2 months post VSG surgery and have had a number of weeks in a stall.  I am ok with it, I know it's normal.  BUT...I've found the joy of alcohol again....dammit!  I stopped for 12 months in 2020, gained weight, had surgery in January this year, lost a shed load of weight...and stalling. I do think my alcohol consumption is contributing (doh, of course it is, it's empty calories) so I'm on a mission to knock it back for a while.

    It's never easy huh!  🙂

I'm with you on this! Im around 3 month too. Had 2 days of drinking on vacation 2 weeks ago but since then, I've had at least 4 more "occasions" to drink. I know its not the worst but alcohol was definitely a contributing factor to my weight gain and its too early for us to get off track. Let's go cold turkey together!

Done, stopping today. Let's check in together to stay on track. 🙂

  9. {{$title = \IPS\Output::i()->title;}} {$title} All bariatric patients should limit or avoid certain foods that can interfere with weight loss. They can add extra calories, stretch the stomach pouch, sleeve or stoma and/or, in the case of alcohol, lower inhibition so that you're more likely to overeat. High-sugar foods, such as baked goods, candy and ice cream Most high-fat foods, such as fatty meats, full-fat dairy products and cream soups and sauces (peanut butter is an example of a high-fat food that is healthy and can be included in moderation) Foods high in refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pasta Beverages with calories, including sodas, fruit drinks, protein shakes, sports drinks and energy drinks Carbonated beverages, including diet sodas Alcoholic beverages Lap-band patients should be cautious about foods that can get caught in the band or cause obstructions. Fibrous foods, such as asparagus, broccoli, celery and oranges Gristly or sharp foods, such as nuts, seeds, ground meat with gristle Sticky foods, such as peanut butter and caramels Doughy or chewy foods, such as doughy bread Fried foods, such as French fries, onion rings and doughnuts Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients are at highest risk for dumping syndrome, although it can occur after the vertical sleeve gastrectomy and BPD-DS surgeries. Avoid or limit: Sugary foods, such as candy, sugar-sweetened beverages, cookies, cakes, pies, ice cream and sugar-sweetened cereals and yogurt High-fat foods Foods naturally high in sugars, such as fruit juice and fruits, should be limited
  10. One month Post-OP and here is what I've accomplished:

PROS: Lost 22 lbs. No longer on blood pressure meds. No longer require CPAP.  No snoring. Dropped from size 18 to 16. My shoes fit better.  Increased walking from about 500 steps on day 1 after surgery to 12,000 steps per day after one month. Back to resistance training after 3 weeks and nearly up to my pre-surgery routine. Back to  yoga and slow regaining abdomincal strength. Full of energy. Calorie intake has increased from about 300 per day (first week) to about 900 per day (surgeons recommendations).  Discovered new protein foods like powdered peanut butter and nutritional yeast. Discovered that low fat yogurt and ricotta and cottage cheese can be quite yummy. Discovered that i can survive quite happily without alcohol, cofffee or sugar. Discovered that its incredibly empowering to be able to decline sweets and treats because I truly have no interest in them now.

CONS: I nearly killed myself because my feet got tangled in my too-loose pants at the top of the stairs. I pee twice a night. I don't poop nearly enough. My hips and butt kinda hurt from joint pain, I don't know why.  I do get pretty tired in the afternoon. I have some insomnia but I found that if I have a little snack before I got to bed, that I sleep better.

  11. Watching "My 600lb Life" and the bariatric surgeon said about living with a family who has unhealthy eating habits around a WLS patient: "It's like trying to make a sober alcoholic become a bartender". SO TRUE!!!

  14. some questions I have....

    -pros and cons?

-what was your diet like in the begining and what is it like now?

    -how often do you exercise?

    -did you have anyd difficulties?

-can you drink alcoholic beverages (not a big drinker, just curious)?

-did your insurance cover surgery, and if so what did you have to do for them to agree to cover the surgery?

-what has been the hardest part with having LAP-BAND??

Any extra info you would like to offer would be great! THANKS!

  15. Yeah you can drink alcohol. I just dont anymore because most of the drinks i like have carbonated drinks mixed in. And I dont do carbonated much anymore. Plus it's alot of calories I dont need, lol

  16. I am new to this and just wanted to say I had my lap band surgery on 6/9/08 and had been doing really well. I went in for my 3rd fill on 1/10/09 and at that time I had lost 81lbs. But I noticed shortly after my last fill that I started having alot of acid reflux, somedays are worse than others, it's only kept me awake a couple of times, and pepcid otc worked for me. For the most part it happens generally throughout the day, I am going in for another fill on 3/30/09 and I know I have lost more, but I am afraid the dr. will take out fluid inplace of a fill. I do notice the acid reflux more with spicy foods or eating to much, and especially if I drink alcohol. I don't want it to get worse, has anyone experienced this problem with the band?. Any suggestions?

  17. Hi Barbara -

I don't really count carbs (I had pizza tonight if that says anything- not much mind you - had a few bites and then just at the topping off a tiny piece). I try to limit my white carbs but don't completely avoid them. I try to eat my protein first and am usually too full to have more than a bite or two of my sides (veggie, fruit, starch, whatever) at dinner. I probably eat between 40-60 carbs a day - sometimes less, sometimes more. I have been losing weight steadily doing it "my way". I believe some people do have issues with insulin resistance and may need to be more aggressive, but not me. To me, it's all simple physics - eat less than you burn and you will lose weight. I'm in this for the long term and want to enjoy myself in the process. FYI - I started drinking alcohol again (martini's) at 10 weeks post-op (don't tell Dr. Nick) and I like an occasional piece of chocolate and wheat thins are my weakness.

Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll

Hi there and welcome ! ! ! As for the alcohol, I was restricted for 3 months. Sodas were out for 6 months, and heavy lifting (anything over 10lbs) was restricted for 6 weeks. Normal working out could resume at 6 weeks out. As for the pills, I was allowed to swallow pills no bigger than a regular m&m around 4 weeks out. You'll want to remember that with alcohol comes some dehydration and immediately post-op, you might struggle to get in fluids. That goes for night clubbing, dancing etc. You'll just want to make sure you're hitting your calorie/protein/fluid goals to ensure success. Just play smart, and you'll be fine.
  20. I was allowed alcohol (1 drink once in a while) after 2 months. I used to be a party girl myself, the first time I went out after surgery i managed 2 cocktails (cosmos I think) and I'll have a drink every now and again, mostly diet coke with rum or vodka (lower calories) but as Julie said beware, because they are empty calories! I completely lost mu taste for wine (red, white even rose which I used to love!) I do hope i get to love my wine again!
  21. Hi- curious to know people's experience with drinking alcohol after sleeve surgery. Does anyone know if cider has a lot of carbonation? Can I damage my sleeve? Stretch it out? I won't have several drinks- just 1-2 socially for a friends birthday.
  22. Hi Leona: I was banded in July as well and have gone through some bumps. I think it's normal and it hits us all at different times. I freaked out at having a foreign thing in my body and felt like "what have I done and get it out of me now!" That's totally better now. As for the social thing...I do understand about loosing your confidence. Maybe you were comfortable in who you were and now that your body as well as lifestyle is changing, it's a liitle unsettling. I hate change as well and going out without alcohol as liquid courage is kind of scary. Everyone around you is having a great time and you have to socialize stone sober. Maybe that's OK though. You're a smart, funny and lovely girl who can stand on her own and prove to yourself that you can have a great time without the aid of alcohol I went out with a group of friends Thursday night. It was my 1st time out after surgery and I was a nervous wreck. So I piled on the makeup and wore the sassiest thing I could find.....and I had a great time. I think talking to a counselor is such a wise thing in times of major change. It helps keep you grounded and makes this transitional time not so scary. LOL Who knew that shedding all this weight could be so complicated???? Best of luck to you....I think that once you work through the kinks you'll enjoy your banded life much more! Stefani
  23. I think even without it being food, you have a lot on your plate right now! I understand somewhat the constant food obssession. I do believe tho, that as you get into your new life, and school starts filling your mind with other things, and you become adjusted to your new eating habits, it will ease up. However giving up food and alcohol, at the same time, while it is an awesome accomplishment, must be a struggle!! Sounds like some depression may have kicked in. Maybe seeing a Dr. would help. If you don't have anyone near you for support, it is going to be much easier to drink again, or simply eat the worng things for successful weight loss...ice cream, pudding, etc. As for eating out with friends, afte the first couple of times in a place, you will find some things you can fall back on to order. And as far as talking about it, just try to do it with humor. I eat hotdogs...but there was a time I couldn't. Just go slow, and try things, you will find your life settling down. I hope it hurries for you!!! I do want to say again how great it is that you gave up both food and alcohol all at one time, in new surroundings, you are a strong gal!!! Good Luck, keep coming back here, there are so many people with such good advice!! You can get support any time!!! Kat
  24. Just a train of thought about the odds. Diabetes is rampant in my mom's side of the family. My mom's mom's mom.. was bed ridden and 600+lbs by the age of 30. So, that was my biggest factor.. I never met her, she died by 35 of diabetes, but I saw her pictures.. and I heard the stories...and I knew I was gaining weight at a gross rate, and saw myself bedridden by 30. So anyway.. my mom's mom (daughter of above person), has diabetes.. she had 'pre-diabetes' about 10 years ago, went on a diet, lost weight, everything was good, then she gained it back and about 2 years ago they said she is diabetic.. and now she's back to a perma-diet. My uncle (her son), was told he was pre-diabetic about 6 months ago. He use to be a personal trainer, but let himself go and he's an alcoholic so the beer belly factor-- and so he's been dieting. I was told about 4 or 5 years ago, I was 'pre-diabetic'. I really didn't know that was a term, or what it meant.. and I honestly still don't, except that I could get diabetes (duh!). I've had a lot of bloodwork since then, and gained quite a bit of weight, but no one has ever told me I am diabetic. I do have some things I associate with diabetes (sores on my body are my biggest problem).. So, I've been losing weight with the band. Since no one has called me diabetic yet, is there a possibility, with me continuing to lose weight, I could still become diabetic? Or does losing weight get me out of the water?? I was thinking, I'm in the safe house now, I've lost nearly 50lbs and I wasn't diabetic at 333lbs.. so maybe I won't ever be.

    Reflux?

Hi Barb! Actually I JUST got an email back from my doctors office today. I'm taking Nexium a.m. and p.m. and then Zantac150 in the afternoon. For breakthrough heartburn I'm taking Gaviscon. Avoid tomato based dishes, fruits and juices, any form of chocolate, alcohol and anything carbonating. Also, if you smoke, quit. I'll be starting my Zantac tomorrow. Hope this helps both of us!
