Hey Lisa
About your question regarding PCOS, I haven't researched any tests that said there was interference with alcohol.
Mostly with PCOS, it's an imbalance of hormones and androgen levels. I don't drink alcohol, but I do know that some alcohol has a lot of calories.
PCOS is related to insulin resistance which results when a person consumes too many carbs that break down into sugars. Maybe alcohol has a lot of carbs in it. In that case, consuming a lot of alcohol (along with anything else that is high in carbs) will result in complications with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance will cause the out-of-whack hormone levels which can interfere with trying to get pregnant.
Most endocronologists recommend a low carb, low fat, high protein diet, along with medications such as Metformin and birth control. Metformin has proven to help women with PCOS get pregnant.
If your friend has any more questions, I would be happy to answer them as best as I can.
Hope that helps

Being a recovered alcoholic and addict you would think I know not to lick my finger with pancake batter on it , right? Yeah not so much

Thanks for the comments! You're so sweet. Actually I "can" drink alcohol. My doc just doesn't recommend it because of calories. So I haven't since my surgery. But I'm going to New Orleans in 2 wks and I'm sure I'll have a drink or two, lol

Thank you for responding to my post. My concerns are all the restrictions we get as being a banded person. You litterally get no alcohol anymore because the stomach is small, no straws, no gum, no cereal, etc. I dont know, I just thought maybe if we could follow the same diet they give the bandsters we could have the same results. Because i also read girls saying they ahve NO restriction.. that worries me. The dr said its in our heads, and that it really doesn't cause a major restriction cause you can drink water and flush the food down.. that its like a light switch for people.. Have you gone to the Orientation?

Are there any sleevers out there who are in recovery from drug addiction/alcoholism?? I have been in recovery for 6 years and would love to be able to talk with someone about cross addiction and the different issues I may face now that I no longer have food to manage my emotions. Thanks!

found a loophole so I could drink vodka and grapefruit juice. . I take a prilosec before and I am able to drink alcohol just like before.. so I have been drinking for the past week and gained back 2lbs. I have decided to stop drinking since it defeats the purpose of me trying to be successful with my wls. So disappointed in myself that I let it get out of hand. I have been under some stress lately and it was a poor way to cope. Tomorrow is a new day and another opportunity to get back on track.

It's very interesting to me that some people are SO in-tune with their bodies, they just *know* that they will be fine if they hurry through the food stages or drink alcohol early. If I was that in-tune with mine, I never would have needed WLS to begin with. I am SUPER jealous.

I am about 31/2 months post VSG surgery and have had a number of weeks in a stall. I am ok with it, I know it's normal. BUT...I've found the joy of alcohol again....dammit! I stopped for 12 months in 2020, gained weight, had surgery in January this year, lost a shed load of weight...and stalling. I do think my alcohol consumption is contributing (doh, of course it is, it's empty calories) so I'm on a mission to knock it back for a while.
It's never easy huh! 🙂

I'm with you on this! Im around 3 month too. Had 2 days of drinking on vacation 2 weeks ago but since then, I've had at least 4 more "occasions" to drink. I know its not the worst but alcohol was definitely a contributing factor to my weight gain and its too early for us to get off track. Let's go cold turkey together!

One month Post-OP and here is what I've accomplished:
PROS: Lost 22 lbs. No longer on blood pressure meds. No longer require CPAP. No snoring. Dropped from size 18 to 16. My shoes fit better. Increased walking from about 500 steps on day 1 after surgery to 12,000 steps per day after one month. Back to resistance training after 3 weeks and nearly up to my pre-surgery routine. Back to yoga and slow regaining abdomincal strength. Full of energy. Calorie intake has increased from about 300 per day (first week) to about 900 per day (surgeons recommendations). Discovered new protein foods like powdered peanut butter and nutritional yeast. Discovered that low fat yogurt and ricotta and cottage cheese can be quite yummy. Discovered that i can survive quite happily without alcohol, cofffee or sugar. Discovered that its incredibly empowering to be able to decline sweets and treats because I truly have no interest in them now.
CONS: I nearly killed myself because my feet got tangled in my too-loose pants at the top of the stairs. I pee twice a night. I don't poop nearly enough. My hips and butt kinda hurt from joint pain, I don't know why. I do get pretty tired in the afternoon. I have some insomnia but I found that if I have a little snack before I got to bed, that I sleep better.

Watching "My 600lb Life" and the bariatric surgeon said about living with a family who has unhealthy eating habits around a WLS patient: "It's like trying to make a sober alcoholic become a bartender". SO TRUE!!!

some questions I have....
-pros and cons?
-what was your diet like in the begining and what is it like now?
-how often do you exercise?
-did you have anyd difficulties?
-can you drink alcoholic beverages (not a big drinker, just curious)?
-did your insurance cover surgery, and if so what did you have to do for them to agree to cover the surgery?
-what has been the hardest part with having LAP-BAND??
Any extra info you would like to offer would be great! THANKS!

I am new to this and just wanted to say I had my lap band surgery on 6/9/08 and had been doing really well. I went in for my 3rd fill on 1/10/09 and at that time I had lost 81lbs. But I noticed shortly after my last fill that I started having alot of acid reflux, somedays are worse than others, it's only kept me awake a couple of times, and pepcid otc worked for me. For the most part it happens generally throughout the day, I am going in for another fill on 3/30/09 and I know I have lost more, but I am afraid the dr. will take out fluid inplace of a fill. I do notice the acid reflux more with spicy foods or eating to much, and especially if I drink alcohol. I don't want it to get worse, has anyone experienced this problem with the band?. Any suggestions?

Hi Barbara -
I don't really count carbs (I had pizza tonight if that says anything- not much mind you - had a few bites and then just at the topping off a tiny piece). I try to limit my white carbs but don't completely avoid them. I try to eat my protein first and am usually too full to have more than a bite or two of my sides (veggie, fruit, starch, whatever) at dinner. I probably eat between 40-60 carbs a day - sometimes less, sometimes more. I have been losing weight steadily doing it "my way". I believe some people do have issues with insulin resistance and may need to be more aggressive, but not me. To me, it's all simple physics - eat less than you burn and you will lose weight. I'm in this for the long term and want to enjoy myself in the process. FYI - I started drinking alcohol again (martini's) at 10 weeks post-op (don't tell Dr. Nick) and I like an occasional piece of chocolate and wheat thins are my weakness.
