I waited to drink alcohol until i was almost 2 years post op. Since that time, I indulge about once a week in a glass or two of wine. Holy crow, i can take just a couple of sips and feel it. Also, there is NO possible way i could drive a car after one glass of wine. It is easy to take it too far because you get to the feeling no pain state mighty quick and can maintain it for a while. I dont think i could ever become an alcoholic, i just dont have a need to drink regularly. Just when we go out.

How does alcohol affect you? My NUT says that about 10 percent of patients become alcoholics after and I find this scary. What is your experience? Sent from my SM-G900W8 using the BariatricPal App

yeah, I'd say No to the beer due to the carbonation. I think the general consensus I've seen is this - Enjoy a glass of wine now and then once your surgeon has cleared you, remember that you are drinking some calories that aren't optimal but at the same times we all need to live and enjoy our lives. If having just one glass every week or two is what you are looking for, I think thats what a lot of people do. I have seem some trying to shame posters for even thinking or asking about alcohol but ignore them. Listen to your doctor and do what is right for you!

If you search alcohol, you will find many threads and posts with many varied opinions and experience. For me, my surgeon cleared me for alcohol at six weeks. I have had wine but drink it much slower. Don't notice that it impacts me any differently. Beer is carbonated so your doctor can guide you about that.

Hello everyone. This is more for the longer post opers. Have any of you tried drinking alcohol? If so, how was it? I like to drink the occasional beer or 2 and want to know what others have experienced. Thanks!! Sent from my LG-D800 using the BariatricPal App

For the peeps who were 280-290 PRE OP...
Alex Brecher replied to ML573663's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@ML573663, You’re getting some good news on this thread. Yes, it is possible to lose over 100 pounds your first year after getting the sleeve! It does not happen to everyone, but it can happen to you if things fall into place. First, you need surgery to go well. You can get a good start by choosing a good surgeon and by following all of the pre-op instructions you are given and losing whatever weight you can before surgery. That helps surgery be safer, so you have a lower chance of complications, and it helps you have fewer side effects, so you can get focused on losing weight after surgery as soon as possible. The main factor in how much you lose in the first year is…you. You will lose a lot more if you follow all your post-op diet instructions as you progress to the solid foods diet. If you rush the liquid and pureed stages or you do not get enough Protein or fluids, you’re more likely to have complications or to have trouble transitioning to solid foods. After you get to solid foods, you can lose a lot more if you follow the diet instructions, including what to eat and how much to eat. You can also help yourself out by exercising. If you are one of those patients who is just itching to “progress” back to whatever got you into trouble in the first place, such as drinking alcohol or eating brownies or wings, you will probably not lose weight as fast. Good luck! -

Really struggling with pre-op diet
ginabee38 replied to anonmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As for the alcohol, it's important to cut it out as much as possible because the surgeon wants/needs you to shrink your liver. Not drinking will help you towards that goal. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App -
Really struggling with pre-op diet
blizair09 replied to anonmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually cut alcohol out during the second month of my six-month pre-op diet program (April). I dropped my calories from 2000 to 1800 to 1500 to 1200 (the last three months of it), and I could allot any calories to alcohol with my total caloric intake at those levels. I needed the food a lot more than I needed the booze. It's been over six months with no alcohol now -- something I never would have thought I could do, but I am glad I made that decision. I'll bring it back in very limited quantities later on (specifically in December), but right now, I don't have a place for it. -

Thanks for the replies! I know you are both right about making sure I get my Protein in and just cutting sweets and white flour out completely and limiting other starches. It is so weird to me that it is relatively easy to not eat those things if I just stay completely away from them, but if I have one single bite I end up on a binge. I was using a food tracker before, so I started that up again today. I don't know why it didn't occur to me before to log my Water intake in the food tracker, but I'm doing that too, starting today. The other tough thing for me to cut out is alcohol. I know that it is considered empty calories, but it seems silly to quit drinking now when I don't even have a surgery date yet. Did any one else here decide to wait until you actually have surgery to quit drinking? I mean, I guess I would actually quit a week before, when I'm on the liquid diet. I just did mine yesterday. It was awful. About 2 hours of interview, taking with the guy, him asking about my past (childhood, education, relationships, drugs/alcohol, hospitalizations, eating disorders, diets I've tried, family history, etc, etc) and then another 2 hours doing standardized tests: the MMPI (567 questions) and three other ones (one about values and satisfaction with life, one about eating habits, and one about depression) that had about 50-60 questions between the three. Basically, I lied and worked to keep my lies consistent. I truly don't think that drug use years ago affects whether I will be a good candidate for surgery at 40 years old. So I told him I had never used drugs, never had any problems with the police. I said I probably drank too much in college, but definitely downplayed the amount of drinking I've done in my life. I'll find out in 2 weeks if I was convincing! Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App

Day 2 of 7 Day Pre Op Liquid Diet
Jhawaiianhny replied to tiffanyjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No. The purpose is to shrink your liver and make surgery safer. Alcohol is not allowed during this phase.I haven't had wine in almost a month now, since I got approved for surgery lol...figured it would be one thing I would have to stop sooner or later, so did it lol Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App -
Passed my psych eval
goaldigger33 replied to goaldigger33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The appointment was really straight forward honestly. She mainly asked about my weight loss history, what diets I've tried, any current medical conditions, any mental health issues, any addictions to drugs or alcohol etc. I do have anxiety and depression and she said that was okay. Her advice was to make sure whatever I said during the meeting that I also put that on the test. The test was kind of like a personality test but you could easily identify the questions that would throw up red flags, like anything to do with suicide for example. I was worried about it but passed with flying colors. Just be honest and consistent and you'll be fine! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Day 2 of 7 Day Pre Op Liquid Diet
ahipchik1965 replied to tiffanyjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
another question, can you drink any kind of alcohol (just occassional) on the pre-op liquid diet? -
Same here. It started around 10 months out from surgery. Sugar and alcohol. I feel nauseous and clammy, and like I don't want to move or talk.

You may have felt back to normal but your insides were far from it. You are an adult and can do what you want but please don't encourage others to do the same. Drinking alcohol this early out is extremely dangerous. You may feel fine but you have no idea what type of damage you could have done. -

Well I guess everybody heals differently. I wish I healed as fast as you did. And every doctor is different too. My doc said 1 yr before any alcohol. I've been having a hard time with everything. Today was my 6th day and tried broth and almost threw up. So all I can handle is Water and Protein drinks. Glad it's working out this well for you. Also keep in mind it might feel ok now but ulcers are not formed overnight. But it sounds like it was only at a special occasion for the alcohol. Sorry if I'm babbling. Good luck!!!!! the benadryl tablets are pretty small - i was definitely allowed to take tablets that size whole. But since benadryl is not extended release, you can always cut them in half or crush them and take them. Most kids liquid medicines have a lot of sugar or sugar alcohols so I personally would try to avoid the liquid form of benadryl.

What do you eat after 8 weeks?
PorkChopExpress replied to Frenchie1977's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, you really have to make a conscious decision to stay away from the foods that you know were triggers to overeating, and chips are one of them. Pure carb and fat calories, very little nutritional value and it's impossible to stop, once you start. So it's a little like being a recovering alcoholic...those things that you know have been triggers for you, you just have to give them up...because they will trigger relapses. -

Salmon was fine for me at 4 weeks. Flaky fish I tolerate very well. Not sure what your plan says, but I think a bit of salmon is reasonable. I'd skip the alcohol though. -
So many biased one sided opinions on here...
john925 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Kind of venting... Don't get me wrong I have learned so many helpful things because of this site on my journey but I have noticed as well how many biased opinions regarding what to do and what not to do post op as well... Sorry but every person is different. Some people have comorbidities or other circumstance that the typical "black and white cookie cutter" guide to the sleeve diet post op does not fit all. And that doesn't mean your doing something wrong. If you have a competent surgeon and knowledgeable dietician follow their plan, be smart/make good choices and results will follow. It's frustrating to see people on here bring posters down by challenging them on their choices. This site shouldn't be a substitute for a doctor or dietician. If in doubt reach out to your team Kidney patients especially for one shouldn't be getting loads and loads of Protein in. And diabetics can probably benefit from having a small serving of a whole grain at Breakfast to stabilize blood sugars through the day. But also I'm not anyone's doctor on here so don't take my advice either Bottom line is I just keep seeing advice on here that could do more damage than good especially not knowing their history. Anyways that's the end of my rant. Just because someone might not be following what worked for someone else absolutely does not mean they're doing something wrong. *disclaimer* this post is not defending those who have pizza, fried chicken, bread, alcohol days and weeks post op!
