Any April Surgery Dates?
longhaul68 replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi- are you on 4-6 protein shakes/day too? So monotonous. I made bone broth and a cup of broccoli for dinner last night and it was so bland that I started experimenting with pickles and banana peppers as seasoning (not sure if that’s fair game but I’m allowed veggies). Any fatigue? I’m a little spacey but just trying to stay busy. -
Best protein bar?
maintenanceman replied to loridee11's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Quest Bars are my go to... 20 g protein, loads of fiber, 200 calories, not a lot of garbage ingredients. Look at the nutrition facts for protein bars carefully. A lot of them are just candy bars in disguise... high in calories, saturated fat, and carbs, little protein. -
Welcome Melba! The tiredness will get better as you are able to add more solid foods. Try to eat 5 small meals that are high in protein a day. That should really help. Good luck returning to work.

Hi all! I had my RNY 15 days ago. I'll be 55 years old next month. I'm 5'4 and my top weight was 248. Pre op I was 231 (lost weight with pre-op diet hell). Currently sitting at 222 lbs. Still on Full Liquid stage with starting the Pureed on 4/19. No real hunger pangs at all, just weakish. Weighing myself just once a week. I've always been hard on myself, so weighing once a week, I think, will keep things more in perspective for me. I'm down 9 lbs since surgery and trying hard not to tell myself it should be more! I'm Feeling pretty good. Was REALLY sore for that first week, but feeling more comfortable every day. I'm just bummed about the lack of energy I still feel. I can toodle around the house fine, do chores, etc, but when it comes to going to the store, short walks, etc, I get wiped out SO easily. Going back to work next Monday and dreading the 10+ hour days I do. Luckily it's just 3 days a week with another half day thrown in there (I average ~35 hours/week). Can't afford to take off any more work. Anyone else experience this? I'm averaging ~500 calories/day, which I know isn't much and that's likely the reason. Currently having 2 protein shakes/day. My doc put a note into the dietician to reach out to me about all this. I'm grateful to have found this site! By the way, I can't seem to figure out how to have my "Weight loss ticker" show on my posts. Help?

I am at the 6 week mark and on soft foods. I have been stalled for 2 weeks at 185-186. I started at 223 pounds and was 200 and for the day of surgery. It’s very difficult for me to even drink a protein shake and maybe one or two bites of food . I realize I’m on the smaller end of weight loss surgery but I am hopeful to lose another 40 pounds. My big wins are that I am off of all diabetes medicine and also 75% of the medication I was taking before my sleeve however I’m looking for any helpful hints I can get to break the stall. Suggestion please.

Struggling to Consume Calories/Protein
Arabesque replied to See.Allie.Run's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It’s not easy at first. Much like you I detested the shakes. Had one a day (diluted to improve the taste a little) & then a soup/broth too. Less than 300 calories a day & didn’t hit my protein goal once. I treated the shake & soup like any other fluid - just sipped until I was finished. My surgeon was okay with this because I was making an effort within my capabilities at that time. Try making your own yoghurt drink - blend high protein yoghurt with milk. You can make it as thin as you can tolerate & even add in some unflavoured or flavoured protein powder. This will boost your protein intake considerably. Sip it just like any other fluid too. I wish I discovered yoghurt drinks in the liquid stage but it wasn't until the purée stage. -
Cravings Coming Back with No pains
Arabesque replied to LiLYuli98's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unfortunately, the surgery doesn’t remove the part of our brain that causes head hunger like cravings. We have to work on those ourselves. Do we get rid of them? No but we learn to better recognise them for what they are & learn strategies to better manage them so they don’t win. Many find working with a therapist helpful - your surgeon or team should be able to recommend someone yi could work with. Do you have a dietician? (If not, again contact your surgeon or team.) They will give you an eating plan (may also include portion sizes, nutritional/macros, calories, etc. but ask for what you would feel most comfortable & confident with) to follow which should support your individual situation & body’s needs. Generally we’re advised to keep our carbs low & look for complex whole & multi grain carbs. No bread, rice, pasta or similar products. Also low fat, low sugar & high protein. Eat all your protein first. Then some vegetables if you’re able. Carbs you are allowed are eaten last & only if you physically can (I never could). You may have to cook meals for yourself instead of relying on family prepared meals which may not support your weight loss. Look for low processed ‘clean’ ingredients you prepare & cook yourself. You won’t have to cook everyday as your portions are so small you’ll have leftovers you can refrigerate or freeze to eat another day. It’s also an opportunity to introduce your family to healthy meals. -

Sometimes life throws crap at us & we can only make the best choices we can at that time within the limits we are trapped in. Congratulations on having the right attitude to mange the situation & continue moving forward when life settles again. Hope your mum is doing better. (Why do hospitals have the most unhealthy food choices?) Like @ms.sss, I’m a bit further along at almost 4 years (3yrs 11 months exactly today). I exceeded my goal & have pretty much maintained since. For a year I fluctuated between 48.5-49.5kg. Then I gained and fluctuated between 50.5-50.9kg. We discovered my HRT wasn’t being absorbed after my gall was removed so went on a patch & I lost a lot of that small gain without changing anything I was doing. I now fluctuate between 49.5-50kg (109/110lbs). Still careful with what I eat but I made changes to how I eat that are sustainable. But not so inflexible that I won’t have the odd treat or can’t work around a situation/circumstance. Never feel I’m missing out. Still watch portions, keep track of protein & keep my fluids up. And no I don’t really exercise. Some stretches & resistance bands four times a day (exercise snacking) for a total of about 25 minutes. I do it mainly for my back & for a little toning & flexibility. Congratulations everyone on your progress so far & your successes. -
Barebell protein bars taste the absolute Best taste wise but they're a little bit higher in cals (200+) Quest makes good protein bars too (love the Double Chocolate chunk bar) Built Bars have the BEST macros but they're just ok in terms of taste. I still like them though!

Struggling to Consume Calories/Protein
See.Allie.Run replied to See.Allie.Run's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you! These answers really help put things in perspective. I think I’m just overwhelmed by the program’s protein requirements for the first 2 weeks (60-80 grams), which is just not attainable by me right now. -
Thank you for posting this- I have been thinking about this very topic as planning a month long trip and need some “last resort options”. Thank you!

Cravings Coming Back with No pains
Sigh replied to LiLYuli98's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all you are doing great with with loss- you are going to see some minor ups and downs over time as your body heals and settles —so just keep focused. My doctor advised protein first, and if i do that i have NO room for any carbs- and if i do it’s like a bite of sautéed squash or two green beans. Keep up with your water and your protein goals and you should be good to go— that being said, when i was in pureed stages, I had mashed potato and grits (maybe 2 oz at a time of one ) because I couldn’t think of anything appealing to eat for that week and they were on approved food list. When you move to soft there are all sorts of soft meats you can have- tuna, salmon, chicken, ham, pork that has been pressure cooked— soon soft hambuger. Eggs are protein, cheese has protein.. mashed beans on occasion (Taco Bell pinto bean side has 180 calories, 9 g Protien). Look up baked ricotta recipes. Or cottage cheese? Good luck— and ignore the comments from Dad- and remember you are doing this for yourself — and you deserve to be cared for and to take care of your body. -
Struggling to Consume Calories/Protein
Sigh replied to See.Allie.Run's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first full 10 days were clear liquids only- broths, fluids, etc— and all i was to focus on at the time was getting fluids. Then when I switched to full liquids, the shakes felt super heavy, but over time the protein goal got a bit easier. I could not stomach the protein water, it was disgusting. Now im still struggling with water and protein— so i think of it as a constant goal! -
Struggling to Consume Calories/Protein
mcipanda replied to See.Allie.Run's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only had water, broth and Gatorade zero the first three days. Then I had 2 protein shakes per day for the first week. For me, the key was sipping constantly. I also used Gatorade zero with protein if I just couldn’t get another sip of shake down. At about a week post op, I tried protein broths and loved the Unjury brand chicken. I’ve heard some people thin out yogurt (like Oikos Triple Zero). Just try your best to get as much protein as you can. 50 out of 60 grams is pretty good! Just keep the goal in mind and sip, sip, sip! -
Struggling to Consume Calories/Protein
See.Allie.Run posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all. I’m 1 week out from having gastric sleeve surgery. The procedure went well, but I had a good amount of pain for the first few days (where I couldn’t really consume anything other than water, Gatorade Zero and broth). Since about day 4, I’ve been trying to consume somewhere close to my protein goals (60 grams). I just can’t get there, or really be anywhere close. I’ve never loved protein shakes, and can only have 2 ounces at a time. I’m lucky if I consume 1 shake/day. I add in chicken bone broth, and a little bit of nonfat yogurt/cottage cheese (which my surgeon allows), but I just can’t seem to consume more than 250 calories/day (at best 40-50 grams of protein). And it is a constant struggle (since I have been good about my fluids). It is wearing me out a bit, trying to consume protein, and it impacts my ability / endurance to get outside and walk. Any suggestions? -
Anyone having surgery on 4/18
trishrivs replied to cjones75's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I honestly bought every kind Costco had available! Fairlife, Premier Protein and Orgain. I also have Clean Simple Eats powder that I've been using. They are icky sweet and all too chalky for my liking. I started pre-op last Friday, but cheated a tiny bit on Easter - nothing crazy, but had some chicken and a couple of shrimp. I just want something more substantial, like tuna, an egg, or chicken - I'm done with the artificial stuff! -
Best protein bar?
summerseeker replied to loridee11's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I like the Amfit protein bars from Amazon 20grams of protein and 186 cals. I also like the Clif bars but they are less protein and more cals per bar -
I am obsessed with Built Bats. They are lower in calories than most other protein bars (130 to 180 depending on flavor) and DELICIOUS. They have three types: bars (which have a caramel-like texture), puffs (marshmallow filling), and granola (like caramel with granola mixed in; different from traditional granola bars), with several flavors of each, and an ever-changing selection of limited release flavors. It’s a matter or personal preference, but granola bars are my favorites, followed by regular bars, and the puffs taste good but are not as filling. Others I like include Fit Crunch, Verb, and Fulfil. I have seen Walmart and Trader Joe’s selling singles of various brands of protein bars, which is nice if you want to try one before you buy a whole box.

Does anyone have recommendations on a good protein bar? I generally have a premier shake for breakfast but I am traveling and am looking for something I can bring with. I'd love something with similar nutrition (30g protein, <200 calories, low carb) and of course, tastes good

Nutrition Goals - Unrealistic with food?
BrigitteLM replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found that going on walks helped me get to my next meal/“feel” hunger again (in whatever way we feel hunger now) - and so I go out on walks 2x/day now and have really enjoyed it. Also going on a routine where I wake up and after getting ready for the day, I start with my protein drink, then my next meal is a stage-appropriate meal like Greek yogurt with cinnamon, Kefir, or refried beans, etc. etc. Then protein drink again, then ending the day with food. And as I progress, a snack if needed. But the routine of it has helped me get more than enough protein, following my diet plan. -
Itchy red rash on stomach
BrigitteLM replied to MK1122's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Last week (4th week post-Op) I developed a rash on one of my ankles/feet that has now spread to both my feet/ankles, calves, upper thigh, and as of today now both my forearms. Last week I switched from Premiere protein to Fairlife protein, I was in the sun, I had a pedicure after shaving, someone else used my shower, and I started eating soft foods. SO much changed last week that I’m stressing out about what’s caused my rash. It’s not anywhere near my surgery site - nothing on my stomach. Through Kaiser I was able to get a steroid cream prescribed that I’ll pick up and meanwhile using a hydrocortisone cream, but I want to know the cause so I can make it go away or keep an eye on this. Super frustrated as my surgeon’s P.A. responded back to me saying, “This isn’t related to surgery” and yet so many people report rashes after the surgery. Any motivational words or advice would be greatly appreciated. Everything with eating and weight loss has been going so well - so this is just so out of left field and I wasn’t prepared or expecting this. -
Go back to eating as you did at maintenance. Thar was that caloric intake that allowed you to maintain that lower weight so you’ll lose. You were still focussed on protein, portion sizes, making better food choices (nutrient dense), fluids, etc, I don’t really exercise in the traditional sense but I do stretches & use resistance bands (& sit ups - I hate them but I do them) to help with my back & oozy discs. I do what they call exercise snacking. Several short bursts of activity through out the day. They say this is just as effective as a single longer session. I do mine over four sessions lasting for 3 to 10 mins depending on what activity I’m doing. You may find this easier than running/walking miles or hitting the gym. I also changed my every day activity. I have stairs so I make multiple trips a day - why carry things in one trip when you can do two or three. I park further away from where I’m going. Today at a shopping centre I deliberately circled the centre twice when I could have done my chores in one circle.

I think I am failing and I am so scared!! Any advice please!!
Arabesque replied to KDeeB's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
To add to the great advice above: It takes time for your messages that your full (or hungry) to get through. This is why we’re told to eat slowly. By the time you feel full you likely have eaten too much. You will find too that many of those old signals are different too. Try not to eat until you are full but until you’ve had enough which requires you to think about your eating & how you feel. When you have those extra bites are you eating them because you need them or because you want them? This is a time of learning. About healthier more nutritious foods. About why you eat, how & what you eat & when you eat. It’s about establishing new eating habits & so on. Focus on eating your protein first, then if you’re able vegetables & finally again if you are able any complex whole/multi grain carbs as you’re allowed. Check your portion size recommendations & calories (if given them). I often only ate my protein & then if I could eat vegetables it would be a green bean or a small cauliflower floret & nothing else. Your weight loss will be erratic: stalls, normal fluctuations, diarrhoea/constipation, hormonal fluctuations, etc. and yes some people just lose more slowly. Have a chat with your surgeon, dietician & a therapist to help you work thorough all this. -
Pain When Eating - NOT Stomach Pain
Arabesque replied to BrandiBird's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Very understandable. Too dry. Too hard. Too coarse. Plus all that artificial flavouring. Just like a baby your tummy is learning new foods, textures & flavours & you’re learning new eating habits. Go slowly & gently. And don’t think of this stage as ‘regular’ food like you used to eat. It’s still a restricted way of eating (I don’t like the word ‘diet’ but that is what it is.) Think of it as solid food & food that’s protein heavy & nutrient dense. No foods with empty calories & little nutrition. So important to get those nutrients that your body needs to function effectively in especially with the small portions you’ll be eating. Still keep food moist & softer. You may find you struggle with chicken breast or steak because it can be too dry &/or coarse. Even though you can start to eat vegetables now, still eat your protein first, then vegetables if you are able & only after that can you look at complex whole/multi grain carbs. It won’t be unusual for you to only be able to eat the protein content of your meal. I remember only able to eat a green bean or a small cauliflower floret after I ate my protein & not every night. -
How long should it take to eat 1/4 cup of pudding?
Arabesque replied to dskg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unfortunately no, you never lose your head hunger. What does happen is you learn to better identify head hunger versus real hunger & learn strategies to manage those time you experience it. So you take away some of its power over your desire to eat. Distraction can be a a helpful strategy because often head hunger doesn’t last. Go for a walk, water your plants, clean out a drawer in your wardrobe or shelf in the pantry, read, play a game, craft, check social media or this forum, ring a friend, etc. Often a warm drink can be helpful too. Oh yeah the shakes can become super sweet after surgery as we can become more sensitive to certain flavours. I’d force down a shake in the morning & then had soup. So glad never to have another one once I started purées. (Used high protein yoghurt & yoghurt drinks to boost my protein intake instead.)
