Pre-VSG lack of support from parents
Chelsi replied to jenRRT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my mom was really against me getting the surgery at first, but then i made her come to one of the open seminars where my surgeon explained exactly what and how weight loss surgery would benefit me. from there, when she was actually told by a doctor what was happening, she felt a lot better about it. i think it helped her realize that it's not an uncommon thing, and that i had tried everything else to lose my weight, this was a "last resort", and i felt hopeless. it made her understand it a little bit better. maybe if your parents attended something like that or you showed them something online? it's hard when people don't support your decision. my boss was like (mind you, she weighs like 130 lbs) "you don't need surgery to lose weight!" and she doesn't know what it's like to be as heavy as i am, so i don't really value her opinion too much. but you're in the right place! everyone here is super supportive and helpful! you will do great! -

That Leigha is a girl after my own heart. Been a believer in non-starvation since I started this process. Throwing a body into the starvations mode only hinders weight loss and causes those nasty plateaus. Good healthy food choices at 2-3 hour intervals makes for a healthy bod! -
Post surgical circulation

According to the internet, there can be several reasons why you feel numbness or a tingling sensation after surgery. https://www.verywell.com/numbness-and-tingling-after-surgery-3156878 Numbness after any surgical procedure is expected for several weeks to months following. As the nerves to the area are traumatized and will then experience a temporary neuropraxia, a transient loss of nerve conduction. This usually resolves over the next 6-12 weeks, but depending on the procedure performed, sometimes much longer. -
Welcome to the stall club I'm still about 40 lbs. from my goal, a little more than a year out from surgery, and have been stuck just above 200 for about 5-6 months now. Don't give up. Just because we have smaller tummies now, weight loss still takes a lot of work every day, every meal. I, too, have mixed things up over these months in an effort to jump start losing again. I believe what will work best for me is to go back to drinking more @@unjury shakes to ramp up my Protein intact, even though most days I get the recommended amount. I do get plenty of exercise. Just keep plugging along and doing all that you can.

Hi Ms. Mandy, I don't know much about you...have you had surgery or in the waiting stages? If you have had surgery what type and how far out are you? I am 19 months post op- RNY... It is possible that you are loosing inches while your body catches up with your weight loss...take measurements and try on clothes that used to be snug or you are saving to " get back in"... Are you keeping a food journal? Look at the amount of carbs you are taking in...as far as fluids...water in your protein shake counts as fluid intake...sugar free popcisles count as fluid...power ade zero, G2, decaf tea and coffee...try water with orange slices or lemon or even cucumber sliced in it...I keep a big pitcher in the fridge and keep adding water to it...makes it easier to drink. Hope this helps.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Many experience problems drinking protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce protein shakes a day, in order to meet my protein requirements. You do not have to like protein shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. I used Muscle Milk Light (Vanilla Creme) powder blended with water and a half a banana. That worked for me. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you might try premixed Isopure. Without sufficient protein, your body will scavenge protein from other areas of your body, such as your muscles. Protein is extremely important after surgery as its job in the body is to build and maintain tissues including your body's major organs and skeletal muscles. Protein deficiency, when continued over a long period of time can cause a disease known as protein caloric malnutrition. Common symptoms are poor healing, fatigue, hair loss and muscle wasting. Immediate post op, protein promotes healing of the staple line and incisions. The fluid requirement is met by a combination. It is not only the water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the protein shakes. It is the water component of the soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day.

Well, mainly our bodies are over 70% water... so it is extremely important to get the recommended water in every day. Tea is ok, and acts like water, as long as it is decaffinated. Caffiene counteracts water's natural hydrating properties. Not getting enough water could stall weight loss. I used to make my "other than water" drink my reward for getting all my water in... so, I would savor a special drink at the end of the day. Of course that was when I was drinking diet coke, but it could easily work just as well with a delicious glass of iced tea. I hope this helps!

Social Events and Eating Out: Advice?
ms.sss replied to a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't go to any weddings until recently, but I went to many a dinner party and get-togethers at peoples homes and restaurants/bars. In the beginning I brought protein powders along with me in a mix cup and just added water at my destination. When I got to solid foods, I'd check out the menu before I went to a restaurant for stuff I could eat and if there was nothing I cared for, I'd just eat before hand and drink water when I got there. If it was at someone's house, I would make/bring a pot-luck style entree and/or appetizer that I could eat. Also, I always have beef jerky in my purse wherever I go. But back to weddings, since you mentioned it specifically: it may prove difficult to eat a full-on contraband meal at the table...so maybe eat beforehand and bring some small snacks in your clutch to munch on between dances just in case ...or if the invite allows it, mention that you have special dietary restrictions, and the caterer may be able to fix a special plate for you. EDIT: remember, this is not forever, it is just just for now while you are in weight-loss mode and taking full advantage of the rapid-weight loss stage -
I am 15 days post OP sleeve and over the last 5 days I haven't lost any more Weight! I did look it up and it seems it's a normal thing around this time, but I wanted to hear your opinions or if anyone has experienced this as well? If it matters, I'm up to about 59 oz of fluids a day and soft foods (eggs, low-fat cottage cheese, protein shakes, etc). What are your experiences? I have the same issue. I hate waxing . It irritates my skin badly. I had laser hair removal and it came back. I bought a No No and it keeps it more under control without the irritation of shaving and waxing. I hope that as I lose more weight the hair follows .

Hey everyone, just throwing this question out there...Hoping to see if anyone his some insight. I am 24 yrs old and recently banded 3 days ago. I've been struggling with looots of facial hair growth on my chin and underneath my chin towards my neck area for years. It used to be a small patch, but the heavier I was the worse it got. And recently the blond, peach-fuzz looking hairs on the back of my arms are getting very dark and thick. Ugh! Dr says it's most likely from the excess weight and hormone imbalance. I basically have many symptoms of PCOS without the actual cysts. Anyone have similar problems? Did the hair disappear after weight loss? Worsen? Stay the same? I don't mind waxing, but waiting for it to grow between each time is awful! Pretty disgusting when I grow a better beard then my hubby...(He may have a pretty sad excuse for a beard, but still! Lol!!) Banded 8/20/2011 - Heaviest: 512 - Current: 467

Thank you for your imput. It was encouraging to hear from you. Looks like you had your lap ban around same time I did and you are close to my age. I was so pleased to find this web site and last night as I was able to read about the problems and victories that others are having. The support group I attend has almost all gastric by pass people and I find that their challenges are nothing like what I will be facing. I noticed that some people have a weight loss graft at the bottom of their posts. Do you know how to acccess and make one of these? As of today I am back on track and lost the 3 lbs that I gained over Christmas. I really was pleased at how you prepared so you would not experience guilt. Guilt is something I am hoping to avoid because it is so self defeating. I knew I would face set backs but did not expect it so soon after surgery. However after reading some of the posts that talk about fillings and feeling full I think I am doing pretty well. How have you planned for your weight loss goals?

Congratulations on your loss. I haven’t yet shopped from the bariatric pal store. I do buy low calorie snacks from the grocery store that are empty calories though and have them on occasion. It’s obviously better if you can find ones you like with protein added so it actually fills you up. Keep up the good work.

Somewhat shallow post ☺️ I am frustrated with my hair. It’s been about a year and a half since surgery. It has been thin, and different textures/thicknesses. I got the wispy ends cut off, but it all looks dry and weird. Like a wig, or cotton candy, or something made of straw. Not like life before surgery. (I am so happy I had the surgery and would do it again.). I tried hot oil, different conditioners, blowing it dry differently, styling differently. Dermatologist said I could try Rogaine, but not sure I want to risk more hair loss. Any suggestions from those of you who experienced something similar? I usually go to a discount salon for trims, but feel like I may need further assistance. Do I call a salon and ask for someone who works with post-surgery hair?

When we are first getting started, we tend to shoot for high Protein numbers daily. For most of us, we aim for 60-100+ grams, and there seems to be an attitude that more is better. As we reach normal weights, do our protein requirements go down? I would assume yes but I'm not sure. The reason I ask is because I am in a 5-week (so far) stall that coincides with finding a Protein shake I like and finally reaching protein numbers over 60. I've been getting 90-100, which I felt was awesome and was totally going to make my weight loss better. Instead, I have stalled. I wonder if it is because I'm getting way more protein than my body needs at this lower weight, and I would be better off aiming for 60 again and skipping the daily protein shake. Disclaimer, I am in my first real stall at 8.5 months and I'm not particularly stressed about it. I understand stalls and I'm not worried that I am stuck here forever.

* wks after and wearing any bra still hurts
takenote61 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello - here's a doozy for a first post - every since my gastric bypass on June 17, wearing any kind of a bra causes pain at worst, and discomfort at best right above my pouch. And to give bras a break, I also feel discomfort in that area without any bra. I feel ridiculous because the only thing I can tolerate long enough to wear to work is a sleep bra which does nothing for form or shape, only restricts bounce a bit. And by the end of the work day, even that is driving me crazy. In fact, it's the beginning of the work day right now and it is already moving from discomfort to pain. Will this go away? Ever? Not that I'm a fanatical bra wearer but it really makes me feel very unlike a 'normal' person when I should be feeling more like a normal person each day due to the weight loss. Thanks for any help. Everyone is different and there are so many physiological changes that there is no guaranteed or average weight loss amount. Some of the things that can effect it is starting weight, gender, age, height, even ethnicity. I personally lost 35 pounds during the first 12 weeks. As for recipes there are a lot of great sites online that offer recipes for different stages of the diet. Even pintrest has boards with recipes. Just make sure you stick with your plan from your surgeon and follow the stages. As for mashed potatoes they are carbs but your intake is so little in the early stages that it's not going to make a drastic difference. I would add protein powder to everything I ate. Mashed potatoes, cream of wheat and refried beans were all allowed on my pureed diet and something I ate. I didn't start solids until 10 weeks on my plan. I was allowed to go back low impact cardio at 4 weeks and was released for regular exercise around 8-10 weeks I believe. I currently try and hit the gym 3 days a week but some weeks I'm lucky to get there at all. Just stay as active as you can and find little ways to get your steps in especially early out like parking as far away from the door in a parking lot as possible and when I'm shopping I make sure I walk down every aisle even if I don't need anything in that aisle. I also will park at the opposite end of the mall when I need to shop there. In the gym I do swimming, treadmill and elliptical mostly but next year I'm going to start dancing again.

Good Soft Foods to Start WIth
vlp1968 replied to MC23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ate a lot of cottage cheese and applesauce. Mashed potatoes would be ok for now too (although not a good idea once your on solid food and weight loss mode). Refried beans are also an option. Good luck and congrats on your surgery. -
Hi Kathy, Since you are a forum veteran, I'd like to suggest you go to www.bonesmart.org to get better acquainted with others going through knee replacements. I have had four replacements in total and Bonesmart has been an excellent resource for me. You are right that knee replacements are not the easiest thing to go through and it really takes a full year to recover from. I wish you well with both your continued weight loss and your upcoming replacement. Oh and by the way, it seems common that most have one difficult knee replacement and one easy one. Hopefully you got the difficult one over with first.

Wow really?!? I thought I was alone! But I thought that was how the quick weight loss happened... Eh, beats me!

Thinking about going from Band to Sleeve....
piercedqt78 replied to loohoo63's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my band for almost 8 years. (just 2 months shy) and I did the yo-yo weight loss all 8 years. I never lost more than 50% of my excess weight, and it always came right back on, no matter what I did. I started having issues keeping anything down last Feb (2013) and by the end of March, I had been in the ER 4 times with uncontrolled vomiting. (still didn't lose any weight) I had an endoscope, and a stomach emptying test, nothing abnormal other than reflux in either test. I was also checked for spasms in my esophagus, all normal. I had my band placed in Chicago, and had moved to Florida in the mean time, so I didn't have a band doctor. I knew someone that had just been sleeved, and she LOVED her bariatric surgeon, so I set up a consult with him on the suggesting of my GI doc. Because I was having issues, they waived their program fee and agreed to see me, knowing my band would most likely have to be removed. He did a barium swallow, and saw instantly that my stomach had prolapsed into my band, and the band would have to be removed. This was already the last part of April. The surgeon submitted to my Insurance and they were fine with the sleeve surgery, but didn't want to cover the band removal. How stupid is that???? He called them when they received the reply from the insurance, and told them if they didn't approve the band removal, he would keep me in the hospital on IV fluids and bed rest until they got their head out of their asses and approved me. I was approved within 48 hours, and had my band removed, and the sleeve done on May 8th last year. I was at goal before Thanksgiving. I'm now 115 pounds, and a size 4/6. I have managed to actually get under my original goal. When I get the sleeve I said I would like to be in single digit sizes, for the first time since highschool, I surpassed that goal, and then I wanted to be 135 pounds (that would put me in the middle of the "healthy" bmi scale) now I am borderline underweight. I don't regret the revision for one single moment, and I made him swear to me that he would do my sleeve if at all possible at the same time, and if not in the same surgery then as soon as I was healed I would be sleeved, the surgeon agreed, and the rest as they say is history. I can't tell you how very happy I am.
