    Can we ever have cake?

@rxs778 Why tempt fate? I'm almost 7 months post-op and I'd rather find alternative recipes to have my favorite foods. Many things can be made bariatric friendly. Then you don't have to worry about if you'll get sick or feel guilty. Here's a really simple, high Protein and great tasting pumpkin pie recipe. If you want crackers, steer clear of the traditional boxed white flour garbage and make your own fresh crispy cheese crackers. They taste so delicious. Here are both of the recipes along with nutrition facts and pics: Crustless Protein Pumpkin Pie 15 oz. can 100% pumpkin (not pie filling) ½ cup Egg whites (Egg beaters) 1 ½ cup Premier Protein vanilla shake ¾ cup Splenda ½ tsp. Salt 2 Tbsp. Pumpkin pie spice Preheat oven 400°. Spray pie pan with non-stick cooking spray. Beat all ingredients together until smooth and creamy. Pour into prepared pie pan. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes, then turn down to 375° and bake for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. It is best served cold and can even be frozen. Serving size is 1/6 slice of pie. I used a Tbsp. of fat-free vanilla Greek yogurt as a topping (pic) but you could use Reddi-Wip fat-free whipped cream for an additional 5 calories & only 1 carb per 2 Tbsp. serving. Nutrition Facts Servings: 6 Calories 77 Fat 1g Carbs 10g Fiber 4g Sugars 6g Protein 9g Cheese Crisp Squares 2 slices - Sargento Ultra thin Colby Jack cheese sprinkle of seasoning to taste (I like cayenne pepper) Break each slice into 4 equal squares, place on parchment paper and lightly sprinkle with your choice of seasoning (no need for salt). Must be parchment paper - NO exceptions! Place in 350° preheated oven on a baking sheet or pizza stone and bake for approximately 3-5 minutes. Keep an eye on them so they don't burn. Slide parchment paper off to cool on counter. Place cheese crisps on paper a towel to soak up any oil. They are super thin and delightfully crispy. They'll satisfy both your chip and cracker needs. Nutrition Facts Serving size 8 crackers Calories 80 Fat 7g Carbs 1g Fiber 0g Sugar 0g Protein 5g

    Unsatisfied with food!

hmmm... I guess I am a creature of habit and eat a lot of the same things every day and do not get bored. Your menu looks pretty much like mine. But I do believe your taste will return, it takes time. You are very early out. Looks like you are getting plenty of protein...don't forget your Water. Your weight loss is great. Does your plan allow some fruit yet? How about half an apple or banana with some Peanut Butter as a snack instead of a yogurt. i would peel the skin off the apple. I find I really enjoy these "treats" but only eat them sparingly because of the carb content. Tuna salad on cucumber slices? have you tried making your meat with some type of sauce or gravy? Chicken marsla, lemon chicken, meatloaf, meatballs with either brown gravy or spaghetti sauce....so you are not eating plain meat? One of my favorite and easy ways to cook chicken is to cut up boneless breast into cubes, season with salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder, brown it in a little oil and then add a can of cream of chicken soup(and the water or milk as directed)and let simmer until done. I add dumplings for the rest of my family but the chicken is moist and tasty from the Soup. Google some crock pot recipes...makes meat moist and juicy and the cooking liquid/gravy adds flavor. You'll get there!

    Travel

This is more of a vent, but if anyone has sugfestions i would appreciate. I am 14 weeks post open and travel often for work. When at home usually cook make my Breakfast and lunch. And tend to have dinner out a few nights a week since my crossfit session is out too late to make dinner. I have not really had to make any major special requests (just minor stuff burflger or chicken without bun, veg instead of starch) when eating out. Nearly all restaurants allow me to order a child's Protein and salad instead of fries. Unfortunately on my current business trip it has been a bit of a challenge. I am in Guam and the hotel menu's are quite starch heavy or fried. Every time I go to order food I have to talk to the chef and we analyze each menu item and come to the conclusion that nothing fits my needs. They ask what I want and I explain to them the things I usually eat, they think about it and suggest, "can you eat chicken?" I usually agree to chicken and it is usually dry. My local colleague is getting frustrated with my special requests. At home I eat eggs but have not been able to keep them down here I am out of ideas. I asked tonight if they have cottage cheese or Greek yogurt and they do not. I spend so much time talking about what to eat that I don't have enough time to eat it. So far the chicken has been dry and the burger patties and steak are tough. They have two salads on their menu - a kale salad with chicken and a chef salad. I don't do cold cuts due to sodium so the chef salad does not work. I walked six miles this morning looking for a grocery store and could not find one. Ithink has never been such a struggle to find something to eat. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App

    Just getting started

Hopefully my surgery will be mid to late January. I have started trying the protein powders to get an idea what they taste like and if they mix up well. Yogurt is one of my favorite snacks so I have switched to Greek yogurt. Just gradually making some changes now so it won't be so strange right after surgery.

    Enough Calories to Work Out?

I've just decided that I'm not going to increase the intensity of my workouts until I can eat a little more. I added some granola to my afternoon greek yogurt (I work out after work), so hopefully that will be enough to let me keep up my current intensity level. I'd like to be able to add some carbs to dinner as well, maybe some veggies? But I don't have the room yet. I'm not willing to cut our any of my Protein to make room for carbs. So, until I can physically eat more food, I will just stick to 25 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of strength training about 5 days a week.
  6. Hello Everyone. My name is Chasity. This year has been 7 years since I had my band placed. This worked great and approx 5 years into the process I had completely changed my life. I was down 130 pounds and at the lowest weight I had seen since high school. I had energy I long ago forgot I had. This was great and this energy greatly improved my children and my lives. We were so active and eating much healthier. One of the reasons I did the surgery was to ensure I was using all the tools I could to provide a healthy lifestyle for my children. Coming from an obese family I feared my kids would pick up the same bad habits. Although, even at my largest I was very strict about what my children consumed. The last two years I started having great difficulties. My band ended up prolapsing and all the fluid had to be removed. My stomach relaxed down and we started filling the band again. Shortly after my second fill I had problems beginning again. The doctor felt the band prolapsed again and removed all the fluid. I went back and had another upper GI to find even with no fluid the band was still moderately restricting. This was causing great difficulty with eating. I was vomiting and having a hard time eating any foods beyond cereal, soup, turkey bacon, and yogurt. It was decided the band needs to be removed and the thought is to convert to the sleeve at the same time. I know very little about the sleeve and worry about if this is the right choice. I had no problem with the band up to this point and had no significant health side effects. I have heard some concerns about the dangers of the sleeve and worry being a single mom of three if this is the best choice for me. I would really appreciate any feedback on the conversion. The dangers, side effects, and potential risks. I have not met with the surgeon yet to discuss this as I have testing I have to complete prior to meeting with him. But I would like to have some idea of what I am facing at decision time. I would appreciate any advise. Thank you and best wishes to all as you go through and continue through the process. Chasity

    Help Me Eat Less Carbs!

If you switch out the grapes with berries and switch the yogurt to a sugar-free yogurt (or maybe greek yogurt that you mix up yourself with stevia or Splenda), it could make a pretty big difference Edited to add: You could probably find a lower-carb protein bar and protein shake too ...

    Im hungry :( :( :(

I am a little over 2 weeks out and I am hungry two. Still on liquids until Jan 9th. I am allowed yogurt & farina & strained Soups. It was tough over the holidays with company, sweets, good food, and now snowbound. But I thought the hunger monster would have been surgically removed, lol.
  9. I LOVE Peanut Butter and my NUT says it's okay but to use it as a fat instead of a Protein. She pretty much says that if a particular food has more grams of one than the other two, then that is the type of food it should be "counted" as. So since PB has more fat than protein and carbs, it is a "fat" or since light greek yogurt has more protein than fat or carbs, it is considered a protein food. I'm wondering what stage it fits into or do I have to wait until I'm through all the stages before I can have it again.......... -Shannon

    One week later

I was banded monday 7/6. I have not had any real pain at all. Tuesday was a bit of discomfort from the anethesia where I lungs ached. I am on full liquids until Monday and I am starving!!! Yesterday was the first day I really felt that way. I have doing Protein shakes like crazy but I still keep thinking about wanting to eat something!! Part of it for me is that I have never been a big sweets eater and on liquids sugar free sweets is most of your options, Jello, yogurt, Protein Shakes. I have already been planning what my entire menu will be on monday!! Today I am making my family chicken tortilla soup so I can eat the broth from it. Yum! Michelle
  13. Well I had surgery June 4th and I'm still on liquids. You are saying you hope you have not gone through all of this for nothing...Are you keeping track on myfitnesspal.com of how many calories and how much Protein, carbs & liquid you are getting in? Are you eating as much as you would before surgery? Have you lost anything at all? I imagine you have lost some weight, so any pounds lost is not a failure. It is up to you to not put the wrong food in your mouth still and by looking at what you are eating, you are doing what you are suppose to be doing. The sleeve is a tool. You are lucky you aren't feeling sick or restrictions by eating those foods. But you are mentioning 2 ounces of tuna. That's not a lot. A Greek Yogurt, again not a lot. If you ate a scrambled egg, a hardboiled egg 2 ounces of tuna and a greek yogurt, all at once, then you got some sort of issue there to worry about and then you should be worrying about the restriction issue. Eating one of these at a time without drinking for at least 1/2 hour afterwards, and you are doing great is wonderful. Take this time while you are just learning to eat to chew your food and maybe stop worrying about what restrictions you should be feeling. After being on the diet roller coaster for as long as you have been, you know what you should and shouldn't be eating, and you know how much is too much. Trust me, try eating 2 hardboiled eggs and cottage cheese and the restriction will hit you like a two ton heavy thing and you will realize the truth of the sleeve. (don't try to eat 2 hardboiled eggs at once..I was being facetious. I think you are doing well. I went from 330-128 and then gained it back. We both know what the issues is, we need to keep on moving....a lot and we need to up our protein, keep lower carbs and most of this is still mental. Try some positive thoughts and maybe someone else will have more advise for you. Good luck
  14. I didn't feel any restriction at first with the small amounts of food either. Same with yogurt, which is sort of like a liquid - I don't get restriction with that 1/4 cup equals two ounces so that's not that much food, but my NUT had me on 1/4th cup to start for the first week or so and then gradually increasing to 1/2 cup. She doesn't want me to eat any more than 3/4 cup of food total at any meal. I would imagine, however, that once you graduate up to a larger quantity, maybe even at 1/2 cup of something (not liquid), you will feel the restriction. Believe me, you'll know it when you feel it. The foods you are eating are not very dense either so they will process better (at least for most people they do). I could probably eat a whole cup of cottage cheese, but I don't because of the carb content in that food, so I keep it at 1/2 cup which still gives me plenty of protein. I also eat it for a snack instead of with a meal. But that's just me. I believe that the first true restriction that I felt was with grilled tilapia. Even though it is soft, I tried to a fairly nice size piece and about 3/4 through, wham, I got this tightening in my stomach and I burped. For me burping is the signal that I am through. Everyone has their own way of knowing when they should finish by the change in their body. You'll figure this out as time goes on. I can tell you that the "one bite too many" feeling is not pleasant, so maybe you'll be fortunate and not have that happen. You are doing everything right by following the plan your doctor has you on at just over two weeks out, so don't worry if you're not feeling restriction yet. Good luck!
  15. I'm not much of a yogurt person, the only kind I've had in the past year or two is Greek with honey. Since honey is probably not a good idea please tell me your favorites! Thank you!!!
  16. I've heard that yogurt suppose 2 b good & have a lot of Protein just can't seem 2 find it n my stores

    What Are Your Food Ruts?

The weight loss surgery diet is pretty structured. Your choices are so limited on the liquid diet (a little chicken broth, anyone? Oh, no thanks, maybe I’ll go with beef broth instead for lunch today!) and on the pureed foods diet. Even once you get to semi-solid and solid foods, you don’t have much flexibility since you need to eat your Protein first, your veggies next, and there’s not much room left after that. So it makes sense that once you find a meal pattern that works, and meals you like, that you stick to them. Soon, it becomes a habit, and maybe a rut. For me, I’m perfectly happy eating Greek yogurt with blueberries every day for Breakfast. Some chicken breast with broccoli makes an easy dinner. A tuna salad makes a quick lunch. For snack? Apples seem to come up quite a bit! So, I guess you could say I’m in a bit of a food rut. Between lack of time, lack of desire to cook (you could call it laziness, I suppose), and the fact that it basically works and I’m happy with it, I eat pretty much the same things day in and day out. What are some of your food ruts – either your favorite meals or your regular daily menus? Or are you a little more motivated or more of a foodie, and you switch up your foods all the time?

    Protein

I'm piggy-backing on this topic. I am 9 weeks post-op and my PA wants me only eating things I can eat with a fork. No more Protein shakes (and no protein bars). Based on no Water 30 min before, during or 60 min after meals, how the H do you eat and drink??? I need 100+ hours in a day to get all the fluids and Proteins in without breaking some kind of rule. A yogurt is 12(ish) grams of protein, but eating 1/3 gives you 4 grams. Same with everything. I can't even eat a whole egg at a time. Am I missing something? As it is, I'm still doing a Premier Protein every morning to at least have 30 grams in. Thanks, and sorry OP for butting in

    Protein

i am at 1 year out and i still drink a shake each morning - Syntrax Nexctar i love the chocolate - and i have some greek yogurt or a hard boiled egg around 10 - lunch is going to be something high in protein as well - my afternoon snack is going to be a protein snack too - peanut butter or a protein bar is my favorite - i also drink a syntrax nectar somewhere in the day that mixes with water for added protein (23 grams) and it helps with my water intake - then supper is going to high protein too and then right before bed a snack. i do this every day. I tried to cut out the shakes and supplements but my protein levels were low each time i went in to get a check up and it isn't worth it to try and just eat enough - i couldn't do it - so i drink the supplements.
  20. How long do you have to be on your liquid diet? I had to be on mine for 2 weeks, and I have 5 days to go. It does get easier. THe first 3-4 days were really tough. I found a recipe and tweaked it a bit.... Jello powder, 1 cup of boiling Water, mix it together. Add 1 cup of greek yogurt and mix it with a mixer really well. Put in the fridge for 1 hour...then mix again with the mixer for 3 minutes so it gets really foamy....then put it in the fridge for 2 hours. When its done its really tasty! Much better then plain jello And greek yogurt has Protein in it! My dietitan said i can eat the whole bowl if I want to...but I usually end up sharing with my son (5 yrs old) cuz he LOVES it!

    Light Crab Cake Recipe?

The secret to a good crab cake is lots and lots of crab and just a little bit of everything else. Get it fresh cooked from the fish counter at your market rather than in a can unless you can find some of the blue crab in a can (it's expensive but soooo worth it). The rest of the stuff is just to hold the crab together and give it some seasoning. You might want to try a small dollop of fat-free yogurt instead of the mayo (I like the Greek strained variety called Fage which is more like sour cream and very creamy even though it's fat free and holds up better in cooking) and ease way back on the eggs. Use very finely grated bread crumbs or cracker crumbs, just enough to hold the crab together. Old Bay seasoning is traditional, but if you can't get that, try Bell's Seasoning. It's similar in many respects. It comes in a little yellow box. BadgerMom

    My Kickstart Diet

Wow, I have to say…it sounds like the holidays didn’t get too bad for most of you, and that’s great! And even better is that you have some sensible – not extreme – plan for getting back on track! Cervidae, Congratulations on having a treat, enjoying it, and stopping there! What an accomplishment, and something to be proud of and to remember when the going gets rough. Jennolsen, Protein and fluids – that’s the right idea! Congratulations on still losing during the holidays, and being so close to goal weight! It sounds like going back to counting, focusing on protein and Water, and getting rid of the junk are at the top of the list. For me, the first thing was to clean out my house to get rid of whatever holiday treats somehow snuck in and accumulated! Then I went grocery shopping for all kinds of good things, including fresh fruits and vegetables like lettuce, Snacks like carrots and grapes, and veggies to cook like broccoli and zucchini. I also stocked up on all the other healthy essentials, like yogurt, plus frozen staples like blueberries, and chicken. Now there’s no reason not to eat right!

    May 10th

I'm set for May 9 and starting my pre-op diet April 25. I've been trying to ease myself into it by eating mostly yogurt, protein shakes and vegetables this week. No meat or breads.
