  1. About how many pounds do you have to lose to comfortably go down a full pants size (not snugly fit). Asking because I personally find the mythic 10 pound estimate to be way off but maybe it's just me? Also, any other bariatric discussion boards you can recommend to visit?

    Sipping Water

Yes, it gets better! In the beginning I remember having a lineup of medicine cups with 1oz of fluid, and drinking one every 5-15 minutes. 5 weeks out, I can drink a cup of water in about 10-15 minutes. If water isn't going down well, try and see if something like herbal tea works better. I find warm fluids go down the easiest. Everyone is different.

    Kidney Stone .... you suck!

Oh Kidney Stone .... how I hate thee. And really, there aren't many people or things I hate in life as that's just negativity. I mean, I hate one person to pieces (but you'd have to know the entire story to understand) but this ..... this stone takes the cake. At the last ultrasound I had for my stone - I was told it was 10.5mm .... which I proudly told them I would be happy to pass. However, apparently it's too big, and I'm awaiting a consult with Urology - which will happen in September. Today though, it's been bugging me and I truly don't think I'll be waiting that long to have it removed, I think it'll start to cause more issues before then. But what this stone is doing is affecting my day to day living .... I'm finding myself getting slightly annoyed more at things. I'm more snappy with my family because I feel irritated with it. And I don't feel like eating, which is throwing a wrench into my wanting to lose this 10 pounds. I'm trying to get all my water in, however, with that comes lots of peeing and a bit more pain as it swooshes around in my kidney. I've been desperately trying to get all of my work done in the event I have to take some time off, add it to having iron deficiency anemia and I feel like a mess. However, if that's all that is bothering me, I can work thru it. I legit am so scared of having the stone removed. I pray they can blast it to small pieces and I will be happy to pass whatever remnants that are left. But I pray that there is no going to grab it and extracting it. I'm such a private person that this puts me into a completely new anxiety level I've never had before. So here is hoping. And here is hoping that if it's going to come out, it comes out soon. I wouldn't mind enjoying my summer. Happy Monday everyone - I hope everyone enjoyed Canada Day and the Fourth of July!

twins! how r u doing so far? 2 weeks today! I got so excited today was my two week post op appt with surgeon. Had to be by phone call as I flew out for surgery but home now. Was late to call and then talked down to me for 10 minutes regarding things I already know and I wasn't able to ask a single question! When she hung up on me with the note 'will send a bloods test at three months talk to you later' I just burst into tears. I got so much weighing on my mind and nothing was answered and you can only trust the internet for advice so much. I have over a page of questions some of which I think are super important. Going to call my GP in the morn and see if I can get in with her ASAP, didn't even get to confirm whether or not bandages can come off, uncle Google says yes but every surgeon is different so who the hell knows? Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!
  6. I have not found great information on long term (10 years) results with the sleeve. I understand its relatively new but I thought maybe some of you might have received this info from your Docs. I'm probably just not searching with the proper words. Thank you for any help on this.

    Struggle

I am 14 months post op but I remember the feeling of regret and depression like it was yesterday! My family ate as if nothing changed (and for them it hadn’t). But I felt alone, sad and like I had made a terrible mistake and like you said…there was no turning back! It lasted about 10 weeks for me. Once I was out of the purée/soft food phases things did get better! I also had a talk with my family about what I needed from them and how they could help me by eating the foods they wanted outside of the house or just not around me at all. I felt selfish asking, but they were all happy to do it! They actually felt bad for the thought never crossing their minds! I didn’t tell anyone about my surgery besides my close family so I didn’t go to the get together, cookouts, gatherings either! My advise? Go to the cookouts when you’re ready! I say all of this to say… it does get easier!! You will get past this phase and you will be happy that you made this decision! I’m sorry it’s sucks right now, but your future self with thank you!! ❤️

Same! I’ve been at home, doing nothing, feeling LAZY. Aside from the grocery store pick ups and walking to the mailbox I have done nothing! We can’t ‘pick up’ over 5-10 pounds, so I feel helpless! I am NOT wanting to go back to work, I’m 13 days out and still having ‘stitch pain’ ( I GUESS that’s what it is) . But I am looking forward to the dr on Tuesday, to MAYBE get some answers on this pain thing. I am afraid to go for a ‘good walk’, I fear being ‘too far’ from the house. The hubby is ‘gaming’ .

First congrats on your surgery. Second, congrats on recognising some of your triggers. Now you know these you can start working out strategies to manage them like how to avoid food commercials. (I record, download or stream most of what I watch so I can fast forward the ads or not get any at all.) It does get easier especially after you pass through these post surgery phases. Once you’re on purée foods and soft foods, try to cook meals that are soft or can be purred but the family can eat too. Freeze left overs in appropriate portion sizes so you can just reheat your meal (reducing how often you have to make separate meals) & still eat with your family. There are always ways to still participate in social events. I had a combined 60th birthday for two of my dearest friends 10 days after my surgery. I took some hydralyte to sip but I could have taken a small thermos of soup or a shake. I only stayed two hours but I was there. I made a zucchini slice I could eat for a pot lunch work reunion two months post surgery. Good luck.
  10. So this is a bit of an odd one. Has anyone noticed that the weight loss post surgery (I had VSG) is less noticeable compared to when you lost weight before? To explain a little more, I’m almost 14 weeks out and down 59lbs… but I don’t look like I’ve lost that much. Before, a loss of 10-15lbs was noticeable to me both on how I looked in the mirror and how my clothes fit. I do notice a SLIGHT difference through my weekly progress pics now and my clothes are fitting better, but it just doesn’t seem anywhere close to 60lbs. I find this a bit disconcerting on several levels. My goal weight isn’t a must for me, but how I look is. I feel like I’m maybe not losing fat the way I used to in a more balanced way, or that maybe I’m losing more muscle as well that’s contributing to this. I do strength training 4 days a week to keep up muscle building (I used to be a bodybuilder so I have more muscle mass than most) and do cardio 5 days a week for 20 mins. My diet 80-110g of protein and 850-1050 calories.

    What was your tipping point?

Hi! Your post caught my eye because I am also 52, and tall at 5'10. Over the last few years of turning 50, I have been adding 10 pounds a year without changing anything. I realized that if I don't do something, I will just continue to get bigger. My breaking point was seeing a photo of myself that slapped me in the face with reality. I have managed to fool my mind by only looking in the mirror (once a day if that) and only at certain angles -doing my make up in a magnifying mirror that I only actually see the top 3/4 of my face. I am very anxious to start fresh with a great tool that will be the boundary I have been unable to set for myself consistently. I am having the gastric sleeve done in Mexico on July 27th.

    A couple of questions

    1) I had pretty bad hairloss between 3-10 months. Now, 18 months out my hair is back to normal. I do take collagen but not sure it had any impact. 2) I am not perfect with vitamins --- I probably hit 90%+ and so far my labs are good. 3) I take 3-4 times a day. Most I take in the AM (Multi, Calcium, D, B12, A, Thiamin) then I take calcium at lunch; calcium and 2nd multi at night. 3 days a week I take Iron and Vit C before bed. I take Turmeric as well to help with inflammation but that's not standard. 4) At 18 months out I eat "normal" sized meals - normal people not my pre-surgery normal. I could eat again after a couple of hours but try to stick to the 3 meals a day guidance. Hope this helps. Lori
  14. I am just over 18 months post RNY surgery and am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity for this tool, and glad I made the decision to do it. Even with everything going on in the world today, I am feelling happier and healthier than I have in a long time. I am 5'10, just turned 43 year old women (41 at time of surgery). Highest weight was 334, day of surgery 292, today I am maintaining right around 160. So many non scale victories, but a few of my favorites: - I have a ton more energy. I used to fall asleep on the couch after work most nights, and weekends I did errands and chores and rarely had the energy for much else. Now, I use my evenings to chores and save my weekends for hiking or other fun activities. - My knees and ankles don't hurt. Before, just walking around the block meant pain, and my knees ached everyday (arthritis). Now, I walk between 1.5-2 miles almost every day and rarely have any pain. I can even do yoga poses like child's pose as I'm gaining flexibility back. - I am out enjoying life more. I have always loved hike, but even when my weight wasn't as high I had a hard time as I was out of shape. Now, I hike most weekends, going 10+ miles and 2K elevation gain without a problem. Last weekend, at the top of a pretty steep hill my heart rate was still below 100! As the world reopens I feel more comfortable going to restaurant's (chairs are so much more comfortable!) and I'm sure other activities will be easier too. - I started a new job in April, and hadn't met anyone in person. We had lunch the other day and I wasn't self conscious and worried that they'd be judging me for my weight. - I can fit into cute and stylish clothes. I'm still figuring out what works on my new body, but I can go into little shops and they actually have things that fit! I'm generally a S top and 8-10 in bottoms. I do have some work to do to clean up my diet. I've slipped a little in the last couple of months and need to get back to eating healthier before it starts impacting my progress. My goal is to not have to hyper focus on food and do regular meal planning with healthy foods and just eat until I am full. Hopefully, coupled with exercise that will help me maintain. Thanks for letting me share. Lori

    Sipping Water

I had DS. I’m 11 days post op. the first two days I was throwing up old blood, which is normal. I had the nurses give me those chuck bags to throw up in. I didn’t really “drink”. I ate ice cubes, slept at a recline on a couch (legs propped up), walked around my hotel room, used the bathroom a lot, and just slept! Take your nausea meds and pain killer. It helps! Try to stay positive and think about how healthy you’re becoming or what you want to do when you lose x amount of weight. On day 3 of post op, my dr prescheduled 2 IV bags. They were very helpful! That night I was able to sip 2 oz of broth or soup an hour and have an ice cube. Now I can drink about 10 Oz of bone broth in an hour or two. I recommend getting Swanson bone broth sipping cups. So yummy after all the sweets drinks. I dislike all these protein drinks and my stomach gets so bloated from them. So I mix a scoop of unflavored whey protein in my Greek yogurts. I’m still struggling to get the recommended amount of protein and water in. But I feel better now that I’m getting at least 40 Oz of water plus some liquid foods. I walk about 2 miles a day. Sometimes one mile in the AM and a mile in the PM. I always sip water, and I mean tiny sips, thru my walks. One thing I highly wish my DR told me was to use benefiber or miralax pre op and post op. I was constipated these last few weeks! Im talking pebbles type of BM after 2 WLS of nothing. Ive been mixing miralax in my morning tea and used fleet suppositories and that has been helping me finally. But goodness, I wish I was on benefiber preop. Also, I’ve taken gas-x three times since surgery and it has helped! Hallelujah! I hope you feel better quickly!
  16. Hi, everyone, first of all, English is not my native language, so please, take it easy. I went through Gastric Bypass surgery on May 19th, it's been 45 days today, July 3rd. I found out that I had a stricture 10 days ago (anastomatic stenosis), the diameter of the stricture was 8mm and through endoscopy, the doctor could enlarge it to 12mm. But even after it, it was difficult to eat soft foods, so I was hospitalized once again and yesterday I had my stricture enlarged again, now to 15mm. The doctor told me to eat only pureed foods for 30 days until I get another endoscopy done and see if it's okay to eat solid foods again. So in the best scenario, according to the doctor, I would reintroduce solid foods only within 1 month and 1 week. It feels like an eternity, I crave to eat something else than creamy soups and fruit and protein shakes. I'm thinking about trying to introduce soft foods a little before that to know how it feels, like chicken soup, with soft potatoes and minced chicken. Would you do that too? Have you ever had a stricture? If so, how did you take care of it? I'm so worried and impatient about my case. Thank you!

Yes!!! It's definitely a struggle! In fact, if anyone dare suggest to me that I took the easy way out or this surgery is easy, I'm going to have to pray for strength not to give them a knuckle sandwich! lol I'm two weeks post op and supposed to be able to eat mush. That has not been going well at all. I ground up some chicken and after the first bite started throwing up watery type substance... not the actual food. It's been and hour now and I am still extremely uncomfortable. I think my problem is, I am thinking with my old brain. I must concentrate on how to work with my new tummy... make friends with it and work with it rather than fight it mentally. There are so many things I hadn't thought of and maybe that's because we can't know how it's going to be until we get there. Now that I am here, I am determined to make it work. Walking as soon as you possibly can will help you immensely. At first I could only walk for 10 minutes, and then once around the track very slowly with several rests. I felt bad for my husband because he is alot fitter than I am so it was a crawl for him but after 2 weeks of getting out every day I can do once around the track, no stopping. I'm averaging between 4k to 5k on the fitbit. I suffer from severe depression and have had some very low points, but here again, getting out of the house and walking for 10-20 minutes will help. This is a marathon, but with training we can do it. All the best to you and you got this!
  18. I am in the same boat. Almost 3 weeks out and have been stuck at the same weight for 10 days.

it seems like myfitnesspal and bariastic are the two most popular ones, but there are others. I recently switched to myfitnesspal after using sparkpeople for about 10 years, and so far I really like it.
  20. I teach 7th grade and had surgery in February this past year. It’s a major surgery and can be hard on your body so even though I didn’t have incision / surgery “pain”- I was tired, figuring out the food, keeping hydrated, my electrolytes were off some — just things I needed some time to get all figured out. I also have 2 kids of my own. My original intention was to take a little over a week off and return in about 10 days. I had some nausea issues at first - was in the hospital for 3 or 4 nights - back in the ER the next week with elevated heart rate. I ended up off a month as per my drs instructions after my couple little bumps in the road at first . Afterr 3 weeks I’d say I would have been okay but my original plan of just over a week off didn’t work. Several months out it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself - wish I would have done it sooner. Put yourself first - take the time you need. Let your body heal and best of luck to you!
  21. Like a lot of you said, week 2 the weight has slowed down. I’m down a total of 12.5lbs in 10 days. Day 9 and 10 so far have been the hardest. I’ve kept to my plan 100% and yesterday and today I’ve had a massive headache, have been shaky and my tummy is painful. Been drinking tons of water. Hoping the next 4 days fly by cause this sucks! 😂
  22. You are not alone, there are soooo many of us out here, looking for advice, support or just someone to listen, that understands what we have gone/are going thru. My bariatric team seems to ‘be done’ with me since the surgery. I’ll ask a question, and they will return the message with ‘you may need to see your PCP’. I feel abandoned by them. My insurance company even placed a call to them to return my call, and they still have not. I’m 10 days out, still bloated, minor pain, but I’m probably ok. 😊
  23. I feel this on a personal level. I had lost 44 pounds since January 2021, surgery on 6/21/21, I’m only 10 days out, and HAVE been on the scale ( I know I shouldn’t), and have only lost 5 pounds. I felt like I probably would be a ‘slow loser’, since I had already cut my calorie intake for so long b4 surgery, but as long as I’m still losing, I’ll be happy with that 😊

Nutritionist was NO help at all

Yes she is not listening to you, I would try to get another one. I don’t think mine is terribly bright either, but it also their education and training is out of date. I do think you need to follow the guidelines as far as water goes. The #1 cause of re-hospitalization is dehydration. Maybe you could just drink an ounce of liquid every 10 minutes and that will help you tolerate it better. I wouldn’t worry about loosing to much weight, it’s normal, it’s also normal that you will gain some back after a year or two, so just let it happen. As far as dairy goes our bodies don’t really need dairy, but you do need the protein it provides. Have you tried ISOPURE PROTEIN POWDER (0 carbs)? You can put it on or in anything, one scoop is 29 grams of protein, you can spread out through the day. Even if you just sprinkle some on whatever your eating will give you extra protein. I have problems with constipation too and it is perfectly safe to put MiraLAX in some water everyday which will eventually keep things moving.
  25. as long as you know you will be altering how and what you eat you should be ok. It wasn't a "big" vacation, but i few and got married less than 30 days after sleeve sx. I swam, I rode a bike for 10 miles, and even went horseback riding. Japan is on our to go list.......... We went to Italy may 2019, and i was sleeved 8/28/19...... it was amazing. We flew into Venice for a few day, then a train ride to Florance a few days and then to Rome....and home.
