Long Distance Hiking/vigorous exercise after surgery

I used to run 8 miles straight in the military and for fun. Im hoping to be able to run that Marathon one day. I used to love running so much. Once I got up over 240 pounds I started only using the elliptical or doing something lower impact for my knees. Hope this surgery gets me down to my goal weight...I used to love running long distance.

    Let's Collect Some Data!

Great Idea! Hope to see this spreadsheet finished one day. I have my surgery this week but I will participate as I go along. 1. Basics: GENDER, AGE, HEIGHT Male 38 6' or 1.83 metres 2. Total Weight lost in the 6 months BEFORE surgery (if any) 10lbs 3. Weight on DAY OF SURGERY. 4. Weight at 1 MONTH POST surgery 5. Weight at 3 MONTHs POST surgery 6. Weight at 6 MONTHs POST surgery 7. Weight at 12 MONTHs POST surgery
  3. There are still a few surgeons in the midwest that do lap band surgery. They say there has been great advancements and improvements. I am considering this less favored option because I supported my sister through an agonizing DS that slowly tortured her for 5 years until she passed shortly after a 2nd correction attempt. Countless doctors and nurses over the years looking after her in ICU said they wished they would stop doing GS and DS because there is not much that can be done when things go wrong. So the band is the only option I will consider. I am post menopausal and since starting sleep apnea treatment, I've gained even more weight and have a current bmi of 35. With diet and exercise I plateau and cant seem to lose more than 30 lbs. While there seems to limited weight loss as well as frequent complications with the Band, at least they seem to be correctable. Does anyone have any words of wisdom as I consider this?

Hey y'all! My VSG is scheduled for 7/17/23. I am super excited! I had a very toxic relationship with diets in particular. I was always "chunky" as a child. Buying pants was a struggle. The weight sat okay on me, but Definity not in the right places. I recall, in middle school - being part of a dance recital and having to buy an adult small dress, to fit my shape. Since then I've been bombarded with "shut/zip your mouth" - diet mentality. When I reached 200lb as an adult, I was mortified, but it did not affect my daily living. Then the pandemic hit; suddenly it was 230, 250, then 270. At my highest I was 295lb. I used to love walking, being active, dragging my friends out to do fun things. Now it almost feels like moving from room to room is a chore. My mind is right and set on the ultimate goal. My therapist and I worked tirelessly for years to get to the bottom of the mental issues that causes me to go to food for comfort. I am ready to flip my world upside down, to START LIVING AGAIN ❤️

    Question about (very) small regain

WLS in 2015 - I have a 5 lbs window and if above for very long I address by reducing the snacks and carbs I check water and protein. It is lifelong for me. I have regained up to 5 lbs from my window but back to post op life - about 6 months out diet. There is no easy way for me but I live a full life. I have been at my current weight since 2019 Best.

Hi, @Ct06033! I think this is a good question to consider. Like others have said, the new medicine hasn't been tested for long term effects. What IS known about it is that as soon as you stop, you gain the weight back. So you're going to need injections for the rest of your life. That is a big nope for me. I'd rather have surgery and not depend on a medicine. Especially because I hear there have been shortages, which could happen again in our pandemic-prone world. Also, the medicine will be WAY more expensive. Out of pocket, it costs like $1000 a month. In just a year you'll be paying more than twice as much for the medicine as the surgery, and you'll have to keep paying, versus the one and done surgery payment. Those are my thoughts.

    Question about (very) small regain

I get it. I too had about a 3lb gain after being stable for a year or so. Yes a small gain but just like you it was concerning to me. My fluctuation had been 48.5-49.5kg but suddenly I was 51kg. I liked being under 50kg & I too worried it was the beginning of the end. I am a believer in your body settling into it’s correct set point & what it needs to function effectively which may be at a higher weight. Building muscle will result in some gain. Becoming more complacent & less vigilant in your choices, making adjustments to your way of eating to better suit your lifestyle, medication changes, or your original way of eating was too limiting all can contribute to weight gain. For me, I discovered a contributing factor was my HRT was no longer working (absorption issue after my gall removal. I also had increased my protein intake due to the same absorption problem. Changed to a patch, made a slight adjustment to the protein sources I’d added (legumes be gone - well reduced) & slowly I lost not all but most of that gain. I now fluctuate between 49.5-49.9kg & have been stable for about 6 months. Funny thing is I do eat more than I did at the lower weight (about 1300 then & about 1500 now) which, according to those BMR calculators, is about right for me. If you want to nip the regain in the bud, maybe start with tracking your food intake for a couple of weeks to see what may be contributing. 100 extra calories can result in a 10lb weight gain over a year. You mentioned you’ve been snacking more & that may be contributing. May be drop one or two of those snacks, reduce your snack portions or look for a lower calorie alternative. But only change those things that are sustainable & don’t affect how you want to enjoy your life. You have to decide if the changes you may need to make to your eating are worth weighing a little less or whether being a couple of pounds heavier is an acceptable increase. And what an acceptable fluctuation may be for you. Unfortunately, I think we will always have to be vigilant. We have too much history with eating & weight gain not to be. All the best.
  12. You & your spreadsheets @ms.sss 😁. I’ll convert metric to imperial for our non enlightened neighbours. 😉 Hopefully it will help people understand you can’t directly compare & it may reduce the anxiety & fear of failing some have to see the range & variety of results. But yes some do fixate on the numbers and don’t use them only as a general idea of what they might experience not will experience. It’s why I ended up giving my stats to that recent thread to show there was more than two stone difference in weight loss across us at the same time frame. F - 53 (2months off 54) - 5’3” 11lbs 189lbs 171lbs 153lbs 132lbs 111lbs I’ll add stabilised at 108lbs at 17 months & 109 at 4 yrs out.
  13. This is interesting, I like data too… 1. F, 53, 5’4” 2. 81 lbs 3. 274 lbs 4. 264 lbs 5. 240 lbs 6. 227 lbs 7. 215 lbs 8. 2 yrs 11 months post surgery 203. Resolving iron deficiency kickstarted weight loss again, still loosing :)
  14. If you're not familiar with the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collective, you should definitely check it out. They have an extensive database of bariatric surgery patients, and there's a calculator that shows average outcomes based on the data. https://mbsc.arbormetrix.com/Registry/public/calculator/uiCalculator/7?menuId=1013 My info: 1. Basics: GENDER, AGE, HEIGHT - female, 39 (at time of surgery), 5'3" 2. Total Weight lost in the 6 months BEFORE surgery (if any) - 64 pounds 3. Weight on DAY OF SURGERY. - 277 pounds 4. Weight at 1 MONTH POST surgery - 256 pounds 5. Weight at 3 MONTHs POST surgery - 225 pounds 6. Weight at 6 MONTHs POST surgery - 181 pounds 7. Weight at 12 MONTHs POST surgery - 144 pounds

Hi everyone I am new here, my first post. I am having the sleeve on july 12th, i am nervous and excited, my weight has been holding me back, looking forward to travelling again and being able to walk for extended periods, also worried about not being prepared.
  16. there shouldn't be a need to re-do the sleeve - it's already been done. The sleeve historically was part 1 of the DS procedure, which used to often be done in two stages. They'd first create a sleeved stomach, and a few months later, they'd come back in and bypass most of the small intestine. Some people lost enough weight with just part 1 that they didn't end up doing part 2. Thus, the sleeve surgery was born.

I have my surgery Monday at 9:00am. So nervous but excited as well. I’m afraid I’ll be the one person who doesn’t lose weight 😬🙄
  18. No, I didn't think it was a magic solution and I entirely know it is a tool, but at the same time - bariatric surgery has been criticized by many for the supposed rapid weight that occurs that isn't normal, which is one of the reasons why people have a whole set of new problems with hanging skin. The body can't bounce back that fast. I think there has been some "marketing" in this industry that have contributed to the expectations that some may have too - especially with before and after photos of people who may be the exception to the rule. Like I said, I don't regret the surgery at all and I am never going back, but I expected more of a woosh of weight loss at least initially.
  19. yay, a couple responses! I figure i should l add mine too: 1. Basics: GENDER, AGE (at time of surgery) , HEIGHT F, 46, 5'2" 2. Total Weight lost in the 6 months BEFORE surgery (if any) 11.8 lbs 3. Weight on DAY OF SURGERY. 223.2 lbs 4. Weight at 1 MONTH POST surgery 201.0 lbs 5. Weight at 3 MONTHs POST surgery 172.0 lbs 6. Weight at 6 MONTHs POST surgery 138.1 lbs 7. Weight at 12 MONTHs POST surgery 113.0 lbs
  20. So, I'm on month 7 of maintenance. After being rock solid stable for 6.5 months, I recently regained 1-2 pounds (beyond normal fluctuation), probably due to too much snacking. I'm still well within range of a healthy BMI, but I worry about regain creep. I'm curious what veterans think is the best approach. Should I try to lose those couple of pounds or think of it as a warning sign to be more careful? At what point do you set a limit for when you need to lose weight again?
  21. Ok, so there are lots of posts out there about concerns about speed of weight loss, amount of weight loss, how much is too much weight lost, how much is too little, etc. etc. The same responses inevitably come back, about how we are all different, we lose at our own rates, genetics, starting weight, height, gender, age are all factors, don't compare, etc. etc. But the reality is that no one really cares about the reasons for the differences, we all seem to just wanna see the NUMBERS. And then compare them to our own. Le Sigh. Sooooo....being a one who personally LOVES numbers and data and spreadsheets, I thought I would start a little project. I want to collect stats from any willing members and i will compile the data into a lovely spreadsheet and graph(s) organized by certain variables. Doesn't that sound like fun???? 😂😂😂😂 So, for FUNSIES, send me the following info (if you are willing!), and i after i collect a good-enough sized sample (say at least 100?), I'll do my thing. It may take a week, a month a year, depending on how many people participate. 1. Basics: GENDER, AGE, HEIGHT 2. Total Weight lost in the 6 months BEFORE surgery (if any) 3. Weight on DAY OF SURGERY. 4. Weight at 1 MONTH POST surgery 5. Weight at 3 MONTHs POST surgery 6. Weight at 6 MONTHs POST surgery 7. Weight at 12 MONTHs POST surgery * the final report will have names/usernames removed in an effort to a bit of privacy if you don't want to reply to the thread with the info, feel free to DM me ** of course this will not be in any way some definitive scientific report! - ms.sss

I think the drugs are too new to know about long term impact on health and how the body will cope after stopping injections and I don't want to wait for more studies before I take my health and weight under control. I was on other weight loss drugs from my doctor many years ago that did not work long term and also caused other issues (insomnia and rapid heartbeat). I know for me the surgery is the best option as this a life long change I want and need to make. Plus I don't have to pay for the surgery as it is covered by the national insurance here.

    8 months post op Questions

The reason I answered the way I did was because of the large number of posts from people who are frustrated, disappointed, angry or think they are failing because they compare themselves with others, set unrealistic goals or timelines, think they are losing slowly, don’t reach their goal, etc. I didn’t want you to fall into the comparison trap too. I had a lower starting weight so had less to lose than you do. Am shorter & likely older. I also had a sleeve. I lost my goal of 31kg (68lbs) at 6 months. (Lost another 11odd kilos over the next 11 months bringing my total to a loss of about 92lbs.) At 8 months I’d lost 37kg (81lbs). So comparing my stats with @ms.sss & @summerseeker you can see how different loss can be over the same time period - a range of more than 2 stone which can be two or three dress sizes as an example. I may have lost more by month 8 if I wasn’t consciously increasing my calories to try to stop my loss. I may have lost less if I had more or longer stalls or lost nothing if my body decided that my goal weight was my new set point & best weight. PS: My total loss made me an outlier. The average weight loss is about 65% of the weight you’re to lose to put you in a healthier range for both bypass & sleeve. I lost 135%. I had a couple of very short stalls, less than a week in length, so my rate of loss was fairly steady, gradually slowing, with just little hiccups along the way.

    Curious About Post-Op Days

The first two weeks after my bypass I was a little sore. I do have a higher pain tolerance so all I needed was over the counter Tylenol. I think I was having a hard time not being able to lift and hold my 3-year-old. That lasted for about 6 weeks. The tenderness seemed to go away between the 6-8 weeks mark. By the 2nd week I was trying not to overdo it. By 3-4 weeks I got this burst of energy. I found that it was very helpful to wear the binder when I was up and moving around. I still from time to time use it and I am 4 months post op. The first big poo is a nightmare that no one at the drs office tells you about. I literally birthed a horse pellet 3 times in the first 8 weeks. I found taking a dose of miralax daily and 2 Colace a day has helped with getting hard stools. This was told to me ok to do by the nurses from Weight Management as well as the Surgeon. But walk as much as you can as soon as the nursing staff let you get up. It helps a bunch.
  25. Hello All, I had my bypass on Valentines Day this year. So, I'm roughly 4 months post op. Prior to my surgery I was taking Wellbutrin 100mg 3 times a day. I haven't had any weight gaining issues with this medication. It actually had been helping me not want to overeat a bunch. Recently my Dr decided to add Zoloft 50mg daily in addition to my Wellbutrin. I haven't started taking it yet because I am having mixed feelings about it. I know I need something to help with the irritability I've had an increase within addition to what I am taking now. I do trust my Dr and him saying that he thinks that I am a good candidate for the medication, and he hasn't seen any weight issues ect, I am though however terrified if I start taking this medicine, I will start gaining weight back. So, my question is those who have been on this medication, did you have any side effects and or weight gain with this medication? And if so, how much weight did it cause you to gain back?
