I think it’s really easy to get discouraged. My dietitian‘s biggest recommendation was to not weigh yourself until your first official postop appointment and I stuck to that. I had so much inflammation, nothing was likely budging in the first 2-3 weeks but I had lost more than I expected by week 4. Hang in there!!

    Cutting out sugar

I think either way is fine, but my suggestion is just don't substitute artificial sweeteners to do it. Take it at whatever pace you need to be able to handle it and adjust your tastes for the long term. If that means cutting back on the sugar in your coffee over many months, that's fine. Better to go from two spoons down to one and then to half a spoon of sugar slowly than to start using an artificial sweetener and never kick that habit. For me, I made the decision to eliminate several things from my diet before taking a few weeks to either eat up or throw away the things I didn't want to have in my house anymore. The key has been not allowing it back in once it was gone. I am also pre-op. I started the process in July with a surgery date in late December. I happened to find the book Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner and it's absolutely been the best nutrition book I've ever purchased (and I've purchased many). Full disclosure, I did not do the 2 week reset portion of the program, but I did start out by increasing my veg and eliminating the stuff that was easiest for me to do right away. After that, there have been certain stages that I took faster and certain ones I've done slower. But overall, in my opinion, it's an excellent guide for what your healthy diet "should" be most of the time. Higher on veg and plant protein, lower on animal products, mostly free from the vast majority of processed carbs, sugars, and artificial crap. If you're looking for guidance, his books and videos are super informative and rooted in science, not fads.

This is completely anecdotal, and not actual medical advice. When in doubt, check with your doctor! I haven't had surgery yet, but I've had referred back pain frequently following Diverticulitis or other abdominal infection. Even after the infection has healed, the lower/mid back pain persisted typically for weeks, and sometimes months because I was trying to stabilize the muscles in front by overworking my muscles in the back. It wasn't until I went to Physical Therapy and learned some stretches and exercises that the pain went away. If the inflammation and irritation from the surgery appears to have subsided, it may be worth asking your doctor for a referral to PT for review. I am hesitant to share the exercises since I am not a medical professional, and I don't know which would be a benefit vs which one may irritate the area you had surgery on.

Hi! I had my surgery on the 16th of October Australian time, so the 17th for a lot of the rest of the world! I'm a week out today. I'm adapting well, to the shift in liquid diet for someone who forgets to eat all the time! I still have a lot of pain that feels like GERD/reflux pain, but it's not unmanageable. I see the GP (not my usual, she's on holiday, but I'll be so jazzed to see her and show her my scars!) on Wednesday to get my incisions checked out, but they feel totally fine. I have been a little bummed that I got the illusion from social media that recovery would be a breeze. 😂 How is everyone else doing? Recovery-wise or in anticipation? I can't wait to get to know you all!

How exciting! Scary! Exciting! Lol Congratulations and the very best wishes. I’m joining the Losers Bench Monday!! New week, new beginning!
  7. I too lost & gained for years. I think most of us did. Like deaths & taxes I could guarantee if I lost weight I would gain it all over again & it would start within weeks. I have never been able to maintain a low weight for as long as I have since my surgery & certainly not a weight this low. Yes, my new set point, faster metabolism & smaller tummy helps but the time the surgery gave me while I was losing was the greatest benefit. It was during this time that I changed my relationship with food & changed the how, what & why I ate. I had never done this before with all the diets I’d been on.(I was almost 54 when I had my surgery so I’d been on a lot of diets.) Not being interested in eating or hungry meant I wasn’t constantly thinking about eating & what I was missing out on while dieting. I used felt any diet i was on was a punishment for having gained weight again. Now, while there are some foods I don’t eat anymore or rarely do it’s not a punishment or I’m missing out. It’s not a diet just how/what I eat & I’m healthier & happier for it. Yes, you’ll often find stories of people struggling or having issues on forums, social media, etc, As @summerseeker said they often come to such sites looking for support or advice. Complications can occur with any surgery but they are very low with bariatric surgery & much lower than with other very commonly performed surgeries (appendectomies are higher than sleeve). The complications & risks of developing co morbidities are much, much greater & debilitating. Yes there are chances of post surgical issues like dumping, foamies, strictures, etc. but they aren’t really that common & are pretty simple to manage or remedy. Like strictures are rare & can be easily repaired with a simple surgery. Dumping & foamies can be managed with dietary choices. I have some issues with the foamies but I just consider them a quirk of my tummy & I had a pretty quirky tummy before surgery so this isn’t even a minor deal. I’d rather have a quirky tummy than be obese, constantly battling my weight & beating myself up about it. Have a chat with your surgeon & ask them for the stats about the surgery itself, any long or short term issues & what can be done to manage or remedy them & their experiences. Ask as many questions as you need. You won’t be the first to come to them with concerns or trepidations. The ultimate decision can only be yours & I wish you the best of luck what ever you choose to do.

Hi everyone! I'm brand new here, and just found the forum. I am scheduled for my VSG on October 19th, so next week. I'm already on my two-week pre-op diet. Excited and scared and also ready to go! I'm 5'2 and weigh 200lbs. I have Type 2 diabetes and High Blood Pressure and I'm ready to change my health for the better.
  11. I’m wondering how everyone is tracking at their 6 month mark. I had my surgery May 3rd this year. My starting weight before pre surgery diet was 309. I’m at 233 as of today and hopefully I’ll get to 225 by 11/3 I was hoping to reach 200 by the end of the year but I don’t think it’s possible. My goal weight is 160.
  12. I'm almost to 6 weeks post-op (yay me) and I am now on a regular diet. Now that I'm starting regular foods, I would like to know how long one should wait to take another bite? Do you set a timer? Is there a feeling you get? Any tips or tricks would be helpful. Thanks 😊

    Questions for pre surgery

It's been several years for me. I've never had an "accident" (either during the pre-surgery diet - or after), but I'm sure I was probably using the bathroom more than usual since I was drinking a lot. I would just get enough shakes for a week or so for now, because a lot of people's tastes change and shakes they were OK with before surgery they can't tolerate after. You don't want to be stuck with a bunch of protein powder or shakes (because you're right, they're not cheap) that you can't tolerate after your surgery. we had to drink only shakes that were 100% whey protein isolate the first couple of months - I don't know if they sell powders like that at Walmart or Target, but you can probably get them through Amazon (there are no pre-made shakes that are 100% whey protein isolate). However, not all surgeons require 100% whey protein isolate shakes - some are fine with blends. So if yours is OK with blends, then you should be able to find them at any of those places you mentioned.
  14. I can relate to the feeling of I'll never get there...... my number that had me raging was 210. I could NOT get past that number no matter what I did. I swore I could be dead for 2 weeks and still weigh 210. That was the number that drove me to have VSG. My new demon is 190. I've been stalled at that number now for 2 and a half months ! Those damn numbers will drive us crazy !!!!!
  15. SomeBigGuy is absolutely correct. I remember sitting in Weight Watchers meetings before I had surgery, rolling my eyes (at least to myself) at these barely overweight women moan and complain about how hard it was to lose 10 lbs. And here I was, 200+ lbs overweight. But now I totally get it!! The closer you are to normal weight, the harder it gets to lose even 10 lbs - when pre-surgery I probably could have dropped that in a week or two! But it all comes down to percentages - and how close your normal calorie intake is to your normal calorie expenditure (which at normal weight, is pretty much even). You still have a ways to go, but those percentages have changed - so you'll lose the weight as long as you stick to your plan, but it's going to take longer to lose the same number of pounds that you could have lost when you weighed 300+ lbs. But keep at it - it WILL come off!!

Way to go! Thanks for sharing this part of your journey. I hit One-derland last week, and it doesn't seem real to me, either ☺️
  17. I have only had 1 other surgery in my life and that was getting my tonsils' out as an adult, and was in tears before even getting into the gown. I am so nervous about the upcoming surgery - not sure why. But curious about some things? 1) I will start my 'liquid diet' on 11/16. My job takes me into peoples homes, and I go house, after house, after house. I'm worried about having an 'accident' due to the liquid diet. I know it's not even November yet, but has anyone been on a liquid diet and did you experience any accidents? Thanks. 2) I'm working on getting prepared in advance. All the drinks, vitamins, etc. are so expensive via the Kaiser, online places like this one, and such. Has anyone found protein shakes and vitamins with the recommended requirements via bariatric surgery/doctor through Walmart, Target, or Amazon?? My friend gave me 1 Fairlife Protein drink, 30g protein. It was good. I'm hoping this counts. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks. Thanks much in advance for any/all replies. Shawna PS: I hope I'm doing this correctly. I don't even know where this will post at? Still new at this. FYI: I look at this site at least 1/week or more.
  18. 6 weeks post op gastric bypass it’s been hard and quite frustrating trying to figure out what I can & cannot eat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’m on soft food stage & yet everything I tried is a no-no for me bc of dumping; although it seems to me I’m doing more dumping than anything! Help!
  19. ok! so for the first time in almost 2 weeks, i woke up hungry! i've been sick for what feels like forever so i guess this means im officially better! so i felt for salty things so i made a weird plate of food reminiscent of my pregnancy days: toasted dinner bun with butter & cheddar, a handful of sour cream and onion chips and a peice of chicken skin cracklin'. 508 calories for all of it, ate all the chips (of course, lol), half the sandwich, and just a bite of the chicken skin cracklin' (it was NOT yummy). i'll probably eat the rest pf the sandwich later, but im def tossing the cracklin'. im looking forward to eating some food again now that i actually want to! and to regain the 7 lbs i lost while being sick (i look a little deathly at the moment, boo)
  20. strictures happen to about 5% of bypass patients. I had one, too (actually, two - one at four weeks out and one at eight weeks out. I was told they are super rare after the third month). As you said, easy fix. I felt better immediately!
  21. I also had a bypass surgery a few weeks ago, and it started with soups and protein shakes. I understand your desire to get back to an active life, especially if you were into sports. I'm also looking forward to when I can resume physical activity. As for satisfying and filling meals, I've found that braised vegetables with chicken breast and quinoa can be a tasty and healthy choice. Additionally, fruits, low-fat yogurts, and vegetable omelets are good for variety. The key is to watch portion sizes and follow your doctor's recommendations.
  22. Hi, I’ve also been slow but steady. I’m down 46 lbs, started at 345. I had some hives week 2, but those went away. No other issues. The diet has been easy to adjust to. I’ve even gone back to coffee every morning, just less. Helps with #2! I find myself eating a lot of Greek yogurt because it’s easiest on my stomach but high in protein. Rotisserie chicken, stewed sirloin chunks, salads, eggs and bacon.

    Surgery Failure

First we all fluctuate. It may be a pound or two or it might be more. Tracking your weight will allow you to see your natural fluctuation & help you recognise that versus weight gain. Secondly, a 50 pound weight loss in about 5 months is great. Why do you think you are failing? Does your surgeon, dietician or team say you are failing? The only people who lose more than that in the first months are those who start at much higher weights than you like on My 600lb Life. They may start at losing 50lbs a month but that doesn’t last. Like everyone their rate of lose slows as they lose weight. I echo others suggestion of tracking everything you put in your mouth - solid or liquid - ensuring you weigh & measure everything. Do it for a few weeks, then discuss your food records with your dietician to check you aren’t missing something or confirm you are on the right track. PS - Real fruit is always a better choice than fruit juice. You get more nutrients, better fibre & still get fructose as a natural sugar to help with your diabetes.

    Bariatric Burr

yes. I can't remember how soon it happened, but earlier than I would have expected if it was due to loss of "insulation". Maybe a few weeks out? (maybe even sooner than that - it's been a while). I think in addition to insulation loss, there's something about the surgery that throws off your internal thermostat. The cold thing only lasted a year or so for me, but for some it seems to be a permanent "feature".

    Worst compliment

"her comment to me was that she was so glad to know I had weight loss surgery because I looked like I was dyeing from cancer cancer lol!" Classic example of passive aggressive behavior. I can relate. My mother was obsessive about staying thin. Through my preteen and teen years I would yo-yo between average size to slightly chubby. Within weeks after my youngest child was born, I moved out of state. Two years later I moved back to my hometown. I was thinner than my mother. She would make comments that I was too thin (I wasn't). I was almost 30 and she was in her early 50s. She secretly started abusing diuretics and laxatives to drop pounds in an attempt to be smaller than me. She ended up in the hospital with electrolyte imbalances and deficiencies. Years later, my daughter was battling with about 35 to 40 extra pounds. She asked me to help her with a low carb diet which is how I maintained my weight at 115 to 117 for most of my adult life. She lost the excess weight and I was bragging about my 22 year old daughter's victory to my mother. My 73 year old mother, who was weighing in about140, replied with the most selfish and disgusting comment imaginable...."Great, now I am the only fat one in the family!" I very sharply responded with "That is digusting! Be happy for her. It's her time now." Be prepared.....people who once secretly pitied you, emotionally supported you and openly cheered your success may now feel threatened by the change in the dynamic. My mother's self-worth was so closely tied to being the most svelte of any woman in her circle. When I surplanted her claim to fame, my mother felt assaulted. My daughter's weight loss after my mother's gain was the final blow to her ego. Because of my mother's sabatoging and competitive nature, I chose not to tell her about my choice to undergo VSG.
