    Does Medicare pay for lapbanding?

I am on Medicare because of a disability. I had no trouble at all with them paying their 80%. I had my surgery on Nov 19 of 2004.

    New Here VSG in May!

MedicVSG, Don't worry about your wife. Once she sees how well you are doing she will probably want to do something herself. I'm foodie as well, I even write food reviews on occasion for a local publication. I'm just going to have to let that part of my life go. In fact I've been thinking rechanneling it into a healthy lifestyle blog or something we will see. I love to go on cruises and cruises are ALL about eating... but I have decided that the first cruise after surgery will be on where I make it a challenge to eat as healthy as possible, seek out small, healthy meals. 8 years ago I lost 100 pounds and I went on a cruise and lost 7 pounds while on the 10 day cruise!!! So I know I can do this if I put my mind to it and so can you. Hang in there.

Really hard time adjusting to life with the band?

I was having a really hard time for a couple weeks after I got the band. I was losing like crazy immediately after the surgery but ywo weeks after my post op my weight loss started to trickle off. I am happy to say I have not gained anything, but a I haven't lost anything additional either. I'm having some troubles with my doctor, I really need a fill so I can get started and they never call back. I was banded 6/30/08 and my first fill wont be until probably 10/14/08. My main problem right now is that I can still eat the way I did b4 I got banded, I don't allow myself to, but its scary! Since I don't have any restriction yet, I have taken to just plain old starving myself and taking these organic appetite supressants so I won't let the food get the best of me! But it was quite a shock to my life
  4. I just want everyone to know today I received my surgery date which is 10/29/12. I have serveral appointments to make, prep for a 2 week fast and shopping for essentials after surgery. I am excited. I have bcbs insurance and after all paperwork was submitted it only took 3 days for approval. I want everyone who participates in responses and post thier journeys (good or bad) how informative and extremely helpful it has been to me. Truly if you are not a participant in this journey, most people can never understand where we have to go mentally and physically. For you pre and post sleevers I congradulate and honor your presence for truly you are people of courage, insight, preservance and you dared to dream that your lives count! I will be posting various aspects of my journey! I welcome your comments.
  5. I don't think I've ever had this many compliments from total strangers as I had just now. I was in the ladies' dressing room at my gym before i worked out, and the cleaning lady stopped me to say, "You have lost so much weight.... I just wanted to tell you." When I finished my 65 minute elliptical workout, the woman next to me said I INSPIRED HER! Then, as I was sitting in the lobby, waiting for my husband to finish his workout, another woman came up to me and said, " I've been wanting to tell you this for a few weeks, but you rock that elliptical workout." I was in such shock bc you would have to understand where I came from when I started exercising last June. I really couldn't do 10 minutes on that elliptical. The day I went 30 minutes, I went into the dressing room and cried. I pushed myself to get to that 45 minute mark, and for the past three months, I've been working out an hour a day on that machine. I'm inspired by so many others in that gym, and today I inspired someone else! My husband put his arm around me as we walked out of that gym together today, and I felt proud of myself for no longer being, Tammie, The Couch Potato!!!!!
  6. Are you on only clear protein? I know those clear Isopure drinks are putrid, but they have so much protein. It's the after-taste that kill you. I drink them while holding my nose, and i keep holding it for about a minute afterwards, until the smell passes. I've heard Unjury: chicken soup and the unflavored kind are decent (I've ordered some - surgery on Friday - clear liquids for the first 10 days). I plan on mixing it with the water zero flavored drink which I quite like. I pray I don't have an aversion to milk and the like - I love milk- that would be a great loss. Good luck

    Complications

Not to take away from the original post, but my program considers bariatric surgery elective as do those from everyone I've spoken to about it at both of the support groups I attend. Regardless of the classification, my insurance covered part of the cost, though I had to pay a great deal out of pocket. All of that said, I'd do it again in a heartbeat, regardless of cost. After getting to the point I am so far (still 19 pounds from my goal) I've been given a new lease on life and even if I were forced to pay hundreds of thousands (instead of just tens) I'd do it again without question. It took me a little longer than SugarFreeMe to get from Obese to Overweight, but then again I started my journey at almost double her weight. I'll never get into the "healthy" category according to the BMI calculators, but without a doubt I definitely feel and act healthy. I'm now able to do many physical things I would never have been able to dream of the last 15 years.
  8. Hi there -- I am scheduled for surgery on 2/1. I am on clear liquid pre op diet (broth, Jello, popsicles, etc.) without any Protein, and expect to be on the same diet post surgery, so far it has been 5 days and I have 10 days ahead of me. I feel really weak and exhausted. Has anyone else faced this? I am hoping it is like other things where once you hit a wall and move on it gets better ... wishful thinking, I suppose. Thanks. Cynthia

    Nausea 2 months out

I was sleeved by Dr. Ariel Ortiz 2/19. I've had 2 days of pretty bad nausea. Not wanting to eat at all and some diahrea. Not sure what's causing it. My stomach doesn't hurt but is uncomfortable. I haven't experienced anything like this since surgery. Anyone else experience someone similar?
  10. Hi all - I was sleeved on 10/17. I stayed until 10/20 due to extreme nausea. I went into surgery at 251 pounds, gained a few pounds from IVs in hospital. I've lost 6.8 pounds since surgery (16 days ago), 0.8 in this past week. I actually gained 1.4 pounds (included in the 6.8 total pound weight loss equation) in the past 2 days. - I walk over 2 miles everyday. - I had my period when I came home from surgery, so I'm assuming it's not womanly hormones effecting my weight loss. - I'm within my Protein range of 60-75g of protein. - I drank 11 cups of approved fluids one day, and 10 cups the other day. - I ate 13 carbs one day, 21 the next. - I've had 30 grams of fat, and 6 grams of Fiber. Are these the culprit? I lost more weight each week before surgery drinking fluids all day, with no food. 4.16 pounds a week average, totaling 25 pounds in 6 weeks. I'm whining and complaining! I read this book about the sleeve from Dr. Duc Vuong and he states there is no such thing as a weight loss plateau - it just means you're not doing something right (after ruling out hormonal or medical issues) - either not exercising or eating slider foods / empty calories. My daily diet consists of Protein shakes, one hard boiled egg, 1-2 oz. of canned tuna, no more than a tbsp. of mayo, and cauliflower. I started a new job on Monday, but I'm not stressed out from it! Please make me feel better and advise me when my weight loss efforts are going to start working! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    10 More days....

10 more days until my initial consult with Dr. Enochs.:rolleyes2: I have faxed all the paperwork to the office and my 5 year weight history came from my OB/GYN. I really hope they have all the paperwork. I never have been so excited to get surgery. I have been trying to intake my water and protein in my diet.:blushing: I am trying to lose some weight before the consult because my insurance, BCBS will only accept the lap band if you have a BMI of under 50. I am right on the borderline. If you have a BMI over 50 my insurance wants you the have the gastric by-pass. I don’t really want to go that right. I am stepping up my Curves :w00t:workout and not eating many sweets:sneaky:. I don’t have a scale at home and I am thinking about getting one. I never had a scale in the house growing up. My mom is overweight, her mother is overweight and my great grandmother was overweight. See a pattern. For now, I am trying to patient and pray everyday that I get approved for surgery.
  12. I had the similar situation, I was sleeved on 11/5 and I wasn't getting enough water in. So, I was advised to get ice cubes and let them melt in your mouth 8-10 small cups all day long and that will insure your water intake. It seems to be working for me. Hope this helps!

Hi Caelyn: Nice to hear from you! I am having my surgery in Salisbury by Dr. Sonfronski in January 2009. I have started on my requirement meetings and had my Upper GI, etc. I am getting excited. I have to keep a food journal and that has really showed me what I have been eating and it shows me that is why I am where I am-morbidly obese. I weight 267 pounds-I have lost 10 lbs since the start of this journey. You are so close to your sugery-great!! Let me know how you are doing so far. Debbie
  14. I'm officially one week out today and, to be honest, I've had a speedy, textbook recovery. After staying overnight in the hospital, I was discharged and came home to sleep. I stayed on pain and anti-nausea meds regularly until Day 3 post-op simply to make my recovery easy (I chose to stop taking them then; there are still plenty of pills left). Over the past week I've been pretty self-reliant - I've been drinking fluids, Protein shakes, etc. and just sleeping and taking it easy. I haven't really been in much pain (I was shocked!) and have had no problem getting in and out of my recliner and bed. I walk around my 2-story house fairly easily, albeit slowly, and was well enough for a Target shopping trip for necessities on Day 4. My only limitation, really, has been lifting - I'm not to lift over 10 pounds (doc's orders). As such, I haven't been doing that because I don't want to harm anything in my stomach/abdomen. I'm eager to return to work on Monday, although I'm still sleepy! Taking it easy and drinking water/protein has been my job this week and, in all honesty, has been the best thing I could have done for myself. As a note, I have no kids and my 2 kitty cats have been very loving this week . My other trips this week have been to the doctor's for a post-op visit on Day 6 followed by a quick grocery shopping trip, and a trip to the vet with my kitties today (while I had time off!) - my boyfriend carried my kitties for me in their carriers. I'll be heading to a friend's retirement party tomorrow night and looking at houses on Sunday (we're moving later this summer). I know I'll be tired, but hydration and protein are the key! As for work next week, I anticipate early bedtimes .
  15. I lost 30 pounds my first 2 weeks from surgery. Now I have not lost a pound for 10 days. Is this normal? I regularly exercise and eat as my surgeon suggest. I have lost inches during this phase. I am just wondering how long will these plateaus last and what should I do while experiencing them?

    Help-4 fills and no results

I have had 5 fills (banded 2/3/10). I am up to 7cc in a 9cc band! I am not at that "sweet spot" but I can tell some little changes are happening with the band. I am down 39lbs since surgery. I had to have my Gallbladder out yesterday so my weight is up a little today with fluid retention. Hang in there. You did not say how many cc's you have?
  17. I am. ..but there under control..I have several dx..that's one...I only take wellbuterin now..have for almost 10 yrs...I havnt had any emotional issues or depression yet..good so far...feeling really good so far!

Looking for Lap Band to Sleeve Buddy

I also had my band removed, and had to wait 3 months. I was told is due to the scar tissue and it needed to heal before they do the sleeve, also insurance and you need to do some test over. I was sleeved on 8/10 and have lost 18 so far, I'm glad I did the revision, the band started giving me so much trouble and it begin to hurt. There is a 1500 calorie diet you can follow to help you maintain and not gain any weight, it was very hard for me and I found myself eating more, and more, I pray you can get it done soon, blessings to you all.

    Goals I've Met

Today I realize that I've lost 100 pounds from my first visit to my surgeon's office. Woo-hoo! Then I started thinking about other goals I've met. First big one - DO SOMETHNG ABOUT MY WEIGHT!!! Start the process by talking to my PCP and getting a referral. Initial weight at surgeon's office - 326. Told I had to lose 10% of my body weight to around 290 before he would submit it to insurance. Weight 1/1/08 321. Was in "twoterville" by the end of February. Official weigh-in on 3/27 287 pounds. Next goal was not to gain weight back before surgery. Surgery date 5/19/08 - weight 270. By end of August my BMI said I was obese - no longer morbidly obese. Today down 100 pounds. Faster than I thought it would happen with the band, but I'm keeping the calories down and exercising more. I still have goals to meet but I'm doing pretty darn good! I'm following the rules (not perfectly as far as eating some ice cream or chips once in a while), trying to eat around 800 calories a day, and have been walking a mile or more around the inside track at the school. Some other goals are to join the fitness center, be in onederland by the end of the year, be able to shop for regular sized clothes, become just "overweight" and not obese, have plastic surgery, and finally to be in my normal weight range and not even overweight. No particular time frame but hopefully by the end of 2009. Sorry this is so long, but I'm really reflecting a lot today on my weight loss journey. I'm so thankful for the information and support I receive on this site. Healthy Grandma
  21. HW= 324 lbs. SW= 299 lbs. CW= 275 lbs. Height= 6' Age= 61 Surgery= 8/19/14 Better yet, no more diabetic drugs, no more cholesterol drugs, no more CPAP, down 4" in waist size, prior to my weight loss I had an arthritic hip and couldn't walk without unbearable pain, now it's easily bearable and getting better. The sleeve and I are getting along, it's working great, I can't overeat but I still enjoy foods and flavors, and I don't feel constantly hungry. Once I made the decision to go for the sleeve there was no turning back and I don't regret it for a moment.
  22. Howdy folks - I'm looking for some input. For the past month, I've been having a few very uncomfortable post-op issues. I think I may have developed a hernia. When I sneeze, or cough (or even sometimes just sit), I notice tenderness/pain in my abdominal area behind my navel. I've done some research, and have learned that hernia's are an issue some folks deal w/afterwards. (possibly from the belly-button incision, and that being where part of the stomach was pulled out from - but I'm wondering if it could be from all the vomitting I did the first 2 months). I recently got laid off, I don't have any health insurance at the moment. Pain level fluctuates between 7-10 daily/consistantly... but other than that, no issues. Wondering if maybe its urgent enough to go to ER? Curious to know if anyone else has experience anything similar. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!
  23. I am new here and will be having my surgery in June sometime. I met with the program coordinator at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in NH and have made almost all my appointments. I met with the psychologist, physical therapist, nutritionist x2, taken the 5 week class and attended two support groups wit hthe thiurd to occur soon. I have to lose 14 pounds before the surgery and still have 10 to go and as per any weight lose it's hard going. Is anyone else here from NH? I live in the Lakes Region and would love to hear from others near me. It's 1.5 hours from me to the point of surgery so getting together with people isn't always easy. I have to wait until June so that my mother (caregiver after surgery) will be home from FLorida. WIsh me luck! Jen
  24. I feel sorry for you as I know what you are dealing with. Having three surgeries back to back is so hard, I can only imagine. I had to do a endoscopy and had a 2 days rest and then went in for surgery. I think you can get PTSD from all of this, and it hurts to know that this is a elective surgery. We all went into this with high hopes and dreams of changing our life for the better and instead we dealt with more trauma. I had a spinal surgery in 2019 and I developed a drop foot, which was a complication from the surgery, which I still deal with. I have struggled with depression prior to this and it just hurts. I have went back to the ER and I get good support there but where I live it is overrun with covid patients, so it isn't the best place to go. My surgeon is very kind and I have his number. He comes to see me in the hospital every morning. I am doing a bit better but I still stay in bed most of the days. Your advice is great and I agree that I need to get back to a routine. I am less emotional now, I also think the meds they us on make us more emotional. I wish you a speedy recovery!
  25. Hey guys I had a couple of questions 1) I was already approved so why do I have to see the doc again? 2)what happens at your last pre op appointment? 3) when do you get your surgery date? 4) should I already start my pre op diet now? 5) how many people didn't have to do a 2 week diet? 6) did you have any complications? And if so what? 7) how long were u out of work? 8) how long after the surgery can u have sex? 9) what do I need for the hospital? 10)how many people had children after rny? And does it help boost fertility? 11)what vitamins do I need to buy? 12)what did u find most helpful after surgery? 13) did u do it alone? Or was somethere to help u during the day?
