    Hurry Up and Wait!

I chose a doctor who specializes in this - and only this - with an entire team in his practice dedicated to the same. I was assigned a coordinator who knew exactly what we needed and when. I finished my reqs in a week and insurance approved me in a single day. My biggest hold up was the doctor going on vacation for two weeks 😂 First consult Jan 30, final appointment 2/17, surgery on March 13th. Note: based on your posts, I wouldn’t let that woman touch me with a ten foot pole unless there was no other option and even the Devil was booked solid. Good luck to you!

    Hurry Up and Wait!

So you got options. But let me start with this advice, that will help you stay sane. Do not judge others journeys against your own. You will go crazy. I finally had surgery after three attempts, I will lay out each timeline. First surgeon, Meeting in november, decided to start program in january bc I would meet my deductible and my insurance requirements, I could be done in about 8 weeks, because all I needed was one dietician appt and a physch eval. My insurance added it as a blacklisted item when the year changed over so I didn't get it. This doctor also was heavy on sleeve, and said that bypass wasn't important and he felt was overdone. Second. Was going to go to mexico. I filled out the only paper, and had a call with a coordinator in 48 hrs with approval. LIterally could have scheduled 2 weeks out, If I had the money in hand. I would have had a 14 day clear diet with them or else they could have gotten me in sooner, lol. Custody battle took my surgery money, so, cancelled. Third time the charm My surgeon was heavy bypass. And I am glad bc in my EGD they were able to see I had silent reflux and lots of ulcers. So I needed bypass regardless. I had my first appt May 2nd, and was given a list of requirements that my surgeon had, and another sheet with my insurance requirements. My Ins reqd a phych eval, a dietician clearance, and a recommendation letter. My surgeons office requires phych eval, 4 dietician classes to be completed 1x a week while on preop diet, 1 dietician meeting a month prior to start preop, EGD, and if needed based on medical records cardio and EKG. I left the appt on May 2nd with my EGD appoint, that was 6 ish weeks out, mid June. I didn't understand that I was supposed to make the phych appt, so that was kinda stalled, but they sent everything to insurance for approval in mid august. I started the 1 month preop labor day weekend and had surgery Oct 3rd. But insurance companies can require things that will make it longer, esp if they require a supervising diet.
  3. I can't seem to shake the blues this morning. I had a vgb 27 years ago and a REY two weeks ago. I gained 20 pounds while in the hospital for my two day stay....and two weeks later I'm still up by 6 (and gained weight the last two days). My calorie intake is NOT causing this weight gain....and my head knows that this is surgery trauma trying to work itself out. But I'm now sitting here questioning everything. I lost 80 pounds prepping for this surgery. I wanted to stop vomiting......I wanted the assist of malabsorption.....but I'm queasy every time I put food in my mouth. I'm uncomfortable with the feeling of food in my pouch. I'm disappointed that my body won't play along. I can't drink enough. I can't stand the thought of having to have two protein shakes a day to get the required protein in. I'm just really wondering why I put myself through all of this again just to feel as miserable as I do in this moment?

    Dietitian

Please do not worry about your weight so much. My surgeon asked me to keep a low carb high protein diet. Your weight will fluctuate and they are aware of it. You will be at least two weeks prior to the surgery on a liquid diet and you will loose weight drastically at that time.

I went in at 191 but I am only 5', have diabetes, high cholesteral and high blood pressure. My was approved. at least 2 before your surgery the dr will put you on a diet with liquids and proteins. so they will be expecting you to lose a little. I wouldnt stress over losing a few pounds, I think it depends on health improvements they expect to happen

    Hungry...all the time

My hunger hasn't stopped either, I was hoping it would. I'm at my 3rd week and sure enough have not lost in a few days, actually gained a couple of pounds. I know it's expected so I won't worry yet 😕 I have not had any issues with anything I have tried to eat, tastes haven't changed. I usually eat anywhere between 600-800 a day depending what I have. I am concentrating on protein and eat about every 2.5 hours per what my Dr. has said.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, I'm 2/3 of the way through my self imposed 90 day challenge to lose what I could lose before my next Dr appointment. In the first 30 days, I lost 10 lbs. In the second 30 days I gained about 4. Not great. However, here is my observation... On day 25, I began taking some supplements to try to stop muscle loss. I began taking Creatine, Carnitine and Leucine along with my protein shakes. In the last 30 days, I have gotten stronger at the gym, my workouts have been able to be more intense and my pant size is getting looser... depending on the brand and pant style cut, I'm between a 38 and even a 36!... I just bought a pair of shorts on Friday that are size 36... I have no idea when I did that last. So, in 28 days, I see my Dr again. At this point, I hope I can break into the upper 240's by then, but it's going to be tough. It's a far cry from my goal of 236, but I'm still working.

    Hungry...all the time

I like you felt hungry after surgery, and since I started working out hungrier sooner. Prior to surgery I was like that too, get full fast but hungry often. What I found has help is sticking to an eating schedule, your body gets used to it. I start feeling hungry about 30min or so prior to my eating time which reminds me to stop my fluids to eat. If its before then if i sip some protein shake that helps a lot. Sent from my SM-S916U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

There is some Gatorade Protein Water. I’m in the Preop diet phase. My surgery is 4/20 but I’ve been drinking these Gatorade Protein water and they’re awesome. My doctor said these were fine and they have 10grams of Protein in each bottle.

    Gym

Walking is definitely a great way to get some cardio in, and lifting light weights at the gym can be a good way to build some strength. If you're considering adding more Gym Equipment to your routine, I would suggest talking to your doctor or a personal trainer to make sure you're using the equipment safely and effectively, especially if you're preparing for surgery. As for the drinks, they can be a good source of protein after your workout to help your muscles recover, but it's important to also make sure you're getting a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies. Keep up the great work, and best of luck with your weight loss journey!

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

I talked to my Mayo Clinic surgeon. I will have a two weeks liquid diet prior to the surgery, it is a simple diet combination each day of 4 premade protein shakes (they have a list of 4 but doing some research I found that the Premier Protein from Costco are the most affordable ones), 16 ounces of regular orange juice and 32 ounces of water mixed with electrolyte mixes (Nuun or IV Hydration). After finishing those each day I can have broth or bouillon or non carbonated beverages. He also recommended a low carb diet until then. The surgeon also mentioned that I should be near the hospital after the release for some days since it seems that the majority of complication arise in the first two weeks and I live several hours away. These days I find myself craving things that I never crave. I read somewhere that they are called “food funerals”. And here I go toward another food funeral. Tonight is cantaloupe.😀

    Hungry...all the time

My hunger was never suppressed either. The day I came home from the hospital my stomach was growling. Same thing, I would get full super fast and be hungry like an hour later. I was so afraid I wouldn't be successful because of how it started out, but less than 18 months later I've lost 140 pounds and hit my goal. You'll find the hunger gets less intense as time goes on, just pay close attention to your body's signals to make sure it doesn't turn into grazing. Focus on protein and water.

I went to the movies recently with my family and didn’t want to feel left out. I understand the habit of mindlessly consuming is what needs to change, but I also believe the grief we feel at no longer participating in these social activities can derail us. The ultimate goal is to realize that not participating does not mean being left out, but this comes with time for many of us. So how do we deal along the way? I decided to get a bottle of water while at the theater and took some sugar free cinnamon discs to suck on while watching. I felt like I was included, but still responsible. By the end of the movie, I only had two pieces. As we were walking out, I realized I am capable of changing the narrative of “going o the movies” while not cheapening the experience. I’m not promoting mindless eating. I’m promoting healing and learning how to kick old habits. If you’re one of those people who has to quit cold turkey, then this might not work for you. Other ideas: sugar free suckers, bring packets of SF flavoring for your water, mini packs of peanuts or a pack of protein snacks like cheese cubes, ham, etc. Good luck! 🍀

    Beware The Coffee Creamer Pipeline

I use Califia Farms oat milk creamer with cinnamon roll flavor. It has 25 calories and 3g of sugar per tablespoon. I was able to cut down the Splenda I used per cup too. I know some people mix their whey protein shake mix into their coffee, but you need to treat it like you're tempering eggs to keep it from clumping (mix a little regular water, stir, then a little hot water, stir, etc... Chef Irvine has a cinnamon bun protein mix that works well in coffee. On Amazon yesterday, I came across a jot chocolate drink, but haven't purchased it yet.
  16. I'm having the gastric sleeve done on 5/10. I bought some Protein2o water, several flavors of protein shakes that I sampled, sugar-free popsicles, and a case of chicken broth. I was told to get 64ozs of water and to drink twice as much water as my coffee cup. Does protein water (not shakes) count towards water intake?

    Struggling

Hi guys, I had my RNY on 3/29/23. Been struggling with the same things. So far my hubby can eat in front of me (he feels bad, but I told him it's ok as dinner has been a social time for us eating together). I get the "head hunger" because it looks and smells good, but I have NO physical appetite for it so I'm not to bothered- YET! Can't tolerate the shakes anymore. I get physically ill just thinking about them. I'm moving on to Pureed foods in a couple days and am looking forward to getting protein another way. F those damn shakes! LOL. I don't tolerate sugar free/artificial sweeteners either so my options have been very limited. I've had the "What the hell did I just do to myself" several times, especially when battling the nausea. I appreciate the reply you got of "It will get better" too. Just have to keep reminding myself of that!

    Pureed diet need new ideas

I will definitely give the vital proteins a try! I'll make sure I buy a small container so I don't get stuck with a big one I got from Nutricost. 😕

Help, Anyone Have The Same Problem?

I take stool softener regularly. The dietician said to eat more vegetables, but that's hard to do when aiming for protein goals first!

I would really try to adjust your behaviors with this; it's going to be more beneficial in the long run to disconnect the association you have between watching movies and eating. (and that goes for anything; I had to temporarily quit drinking in bars way back when because I wanted to quit smoking and that was one of my "triggers"). If it were me, if the theater has a Coke Freestyle machine with no-sugar, non carbonated options I would get something that fits that criteria in the largest size they have and spend the movie catching up on your hydration. If not, I'd probably get a big cup of ice water and put some powdered or liquid sugar free drink mix in it if water isn't your thing.

String cheese was one of my faves in the early months. I like trying to make the thinnest long string, it's fun, it melts in your mouth, has protein and calcium, and time consuming to eat (i.e. Keeps me busy) but most importantly, it's good for the early stages on most programs.

    Struggling

I had my surgery 4 days ago and have been wanting food too. It seems to me it is just the habit of eating as I am not hungry. So far I have found anything really cold in not sitting well. This morning I had decaf coffee with cremora and was fine until 20 m later when I started sipping on a protein shake. Threw it all up. then later for lunch. threw up more protein shake. The rest of the day I have kept down, chicken broth, water with crystal light, sugar free jello and premier protein clear drink with no problem. I think maybe I need to wait another day before I start the the yogurt and pudding. Although I did drink some ensure at the hospital with no problems. I most certainly have to take small sips and I cannot imagine trying to chug anything, I was afraid to drink the cup of barium for the upper gi they did after the hospital. Dont feel bad for yourself. The first day after I was so sorry I did this but that is changing. Ive been keeping myself busy talking to family, watching TV, taking some walks around the house and yard and playing solitaire. One day at a time.

    Struggling

I had my bypass five days ago and today has been the first really hard day. I woke up this morning and on auto pilot chugged a bunch of ice water like I normally would. My belly instantly let me know I messed up. I've been bloated and in pain most of the day as a result and honestly...I just want some freaking food. I'm lusting over a scrambled egg, cottage cheese, anything other than shakes or strained soup with protein powder. I hate that I feel sorry for myself right now! Sorry for being such a downer, but I would really appreciate some encouraging words right now from someone who understands.

The only thing I can think of (and this is based on my diet) is that you are not ready to be at this much yet. When I got out I was clear liquid only. This was: coffee black. Tea, water, broth, protein waters, Bai juices, etc no milk or shakes until next phase. Contact your physician of course to make sure everything is OK and find out if there is any adjustments that need to be made.
