  1. Hello all it seems like it took forever but finally on March 19, 2009 I got banded! Surgery went great and I feel great yea! My doctor is Stephen Malley and he is the bomb. Finally at 54 I will begin a new journey and I am terribly excited about it.
  2. unfortunately hair loss..arrgghh..normal...lost a lot of mine, and I did EVERYTHING by the book and human guidance, still lost a lot of it. nausea. another unfortunate. I still feel it a lot of the time. I just had lunch, 4oz salmon & 10 steamed snowpeas..feeling sluggish. But I'd say if it persists like always call the Doc.

    Hello All!

Hi Anthony! Welcome! You are 10 days behind me. I had my surgery on Sept 6 so I am now 3 days post op. I feel great! Good for you for not giving in to those moments of weakness, you gotta be strong! I was on a week of liquid Protein before my surgery. I gave in and had 1/2 a cucumber slice, twice. My husband scolded me so much you would have thought I'd eaten a banana split! I am determined to be successful with the lap band, my health demands it. Good luck on 9/16, and keep in touch! results not typical

I was banded 12-19-08 and to date am down 48 pounds..I hope in 3 more months to be down at least 25 more pounds..So yes, I'd say some of us do have results not typical of some others.. However I DON'T follow to a T! Bad, I know..But I gotta have chocolate some times..And my birthday was the 5th(april) so I had cake! Don't anybody shoot me..I'm still losing at a good pace..I do need to exercise more though..:mad2: OH, and congrats!!!:sneaky:
  5. Did anyone have abnormal upper GI results? I had my upper GI on Friday, and I am so worried. I really hope I can still do the surgery. I have suffered with acid reflux for about 10 years, I hope I have not caused any damage. The radiology tech said he did see a hiatal hernia, but I know that it can be repaired during the lap band surgery. I am worried that they might have found something else. He said that the barium I drank was taken a long time to get into the stomach, and then he asked if I had slow digestion. Wish me luck, I can't wait till the offical results are ready.
  6. Ok, this might get a little graphic, but I've never had this problem, sooo I'm hoping its normal. I just had my surgery on Monday... 3/8/10 When I go to the bathroom, I pee, but also, but I also have liquid out of my butt, kinda like i'm peeing out of my butt. It happens almost every time I go to the bathroom. And usually I feel much much better afterwards, so I'm hoping its normal for after surgery? Also. I'm trying to drink as much Water as I can, however, yesterday, I think i may have drank a little to much at a time, and I felt very nauseous, and ended up throwing up, but nothing came out but spit and a little bit of foam. Is this what happens if I drink to much? Or could it have been caused by something else? And when can I take a shower? My mom, a nurse, told me to wait a few days, but I'm really feeling dirty, even though I've washed up with a wash cloth. I just don't want my incisions to get damaged or anything. Thanks for your help!
  7. Very, very well said. I had a friend contact via FB once I came out about my VSG. His comments to me after explaining the dietary guidelines, and life post-op were astonishing. He said, and yes I quote " I seriously can not give up eating an entire chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes just to be skinny." My reply to him was " well in 5-10 years tell me how that chicken fried steak works for your cholesterol, and hypertension." Least to say, we haven't spoken about my surgery since that day. He's a mere 5'10" and pushing 400lbs at the ripe age of 28. He has 4 children that are all under the age of 10. My heart breaks for him because he can't see that the benefits of losing weight and gettingg closer to a normal weight outweigh the loss of strapping a feed bag around our necks.
  8. Life After the Band: only difference for me is no carbonation. Don't care about soda... miss beer. Other then that, I am amazed how it is the same you just eat less. Adjusting to foods: I have not had a problem with any foods at all. I have eaten anything I want. Don't know the percentage of slippage. If I had a chance to change it: First thought is no. My only other thought is I might have looked a little more into the sleeve just because it may be faster. Plus my insurance did not cover it. But what is faster for me is not faster for others and visa versa... There are plenty of people on this site that have lost weight just as fast as peope with all the other wls... so its is different for all. Now that I am on this journey, I am so excited to get it over with and get on with my life. This is the first time in my overweight life that I know I will finally see the other side. So that just makes me want to get this done... I also have my husband and my son that have done this with me all within a two week time span (june 09) and my husband says the same thing and my son only being 19 would not have done anything else but the band and I understand that. It is still diet and exercise that makes this work. It's not magic. No matter what comes out on the market for weight loss it always comes down to eating right and exercising, bottom line. The band is just a tool that helps stop hunger and that is half the battle. The other half is in your head and why you are overweight anyway. Both have to be fixed or it won't work or it will just come back again someday. Also until you get your band to the right fill amount, it takes just as much will power as regular dieting. I don't think we are told that enough pre banding, but it's reality. Or it is for the three post surgery people that live in my house. So with that said... Go for it and don't look back. You do what the dr's tell you and it will work. Start exercising immediatly... I waited for about 6 weeks just out of laziness and that is six weeks closer to my goal. I started exercising at the YMCA 14 days ago and I have not missed a work out. I give my self two days off each week. I hate exercise but for some reason this time, I am getting addicted to it. I think it's because AGAIN I know I will complete my mission. Good Luck to you...

    back to work Monday

I hear you. I was banded on 3/10 and I went back to work last thursday. My first day back was one of the longest days I have had there. I was just tired and wanted to go home. I recommend taking it slow. My boss know about the band and I worked out a little arrangement with her. I broke my lunch up into two 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch. If your boss knows about your surgery ask him/her about taking an extra break here and there or seeing if they can manipulate your lunch time too. Keeping up on fluids is important so hopefully your boss will be on board.

    Is this normal?

UGH... and I had the EXACT symptoms you do. Mine felt like an overall tightness/soreness /extreme discomfort - like when I took a deep breath, or was sitting/laying in a certain position, bending over, etc. I basically felt it all the time. I discussed with my doctor and he said it's most likely a combination of trapped gas and constipation. I was banded on 11/10 and had a hell of a time (excuse my language) going #2. I had HORRIBLE constipation. I've since taken colace and have had a MUCH better time. High Protein diets are synonymous with constipation, so it’s very important that we drink as much Water as possible. I was 3 weeks post-op yesterday and can still feel it, just not as bad. It’s DEFINITELY gotten SO much better though. I too was very concerned for a while. My port is the lower right side of my stomach closer to my belly button as opposed to under your left rib cage. So for me, this particular ailment wasn’t port pain (though I DO have some port pain, just not there lol). Also, I know that some sleeve/bypass patients have experienced the same pain/discomfort… so I don’t think this symptom is exclusive to banded patients. My doctor also suggested that it may be something called "splenic flexure syndrome." Essentially, gas gets trapped in the bend of the colon near the spleen (the splenic flexure). It’s more or less just gas pains that will eventually dissipate. This may sound crazy… but I found that flapping my arms, like I’m doing the chicken dance helped. I know it sounds weird, but it actually helped alleviate my discomfort/pain But overall, if the discomfort if not manageable and is not getting better at all, I would certainly call your doctor. There’s no reason for you to be uncomfortable and in pain.
  11. Sleeved on 6/30 and EXTREME fatigue the last 2 days. I take all my B12 and B1 Vitamins but I have a hard time getting in my Multivitamins. I get between 50-60 Proteins daily and less than 10 carbs. Calories are around 600-700. I do have a hard time getting in more than 32 oz of Water though. The eating and then waiting to drink is part of the problem for me on getting enough water in. Has this happened to anyone else? My husband is getting concerned because I literally have no energy to do anything...

  13. I had my 1st visit with the surgeon on Aug 4th, I have to do a 6 month diet & exercise class, Aug 8th i attended a diet & exercise seminar, Aug 9th I drop the form off to my dr office so she can sign off saying it's ok to participate in the Well Wellness Program, Aug 10-Aug 22 nothing but excuses after excuses, so on the 22nd I go to the office and ask have they faxed the paperwork back to the Wellness Center yet, O she has a note on your chart to discuss at office visit, wow thanks for letting me know so I try to scheldule a office can't one until Sept 19th!!!!! So I've decided if I really want to get the ball rolling I needed to change drs. So I made an appt with another dr who my mother goes to, and I will be seeing him on Monday!!! I plan on going on a cruise in May I would like to be banded by then. So with that being said do you think I'm doing the right thang by changing drs????

    Backpacking/Hiking

@@Christopher James - I don't know where you have been, but as for me, I've been to heights I've never imagined me doing (well maybe when I was 19 in the Army). The nice thing about hiking is you can nibble on nuts and things which would normally be a problem, but do really well when you are moving under a load constantly. Be very aware of your Water intake and enjoy the air, the views and new found mobility.

    Does Medicare pay for lapbanding?

I am on Medicare because of a disability. I had no trouble at all with them paying their 80%. I had my surgery on Nov 19 of 2004.

    New Here VSG in May!

MedicVSG, Don't worry about your wife. Once she sees how well you are doing she will probably want to do something herself. I'm foodie as well, I even write food reviews on occasion for a local publication. I'm just going to have to let that part of my life go. In fact I've been thinking rechanneling it into a healthy lifestyle blog or something we will see. I love to go on cruises and cruises are ALL about eating... but I have decided that the first cruise after surgery will be on where I make it a challenge to eat as healthy as possible, seek out small, healthy meals. 8 years ago I lost 100 pounds and I went on a cruise and lost 7 pounds while on the 10 day cruise!!! So I know I can do this if I put my mind to it and so can you. Hang in there.

Really hard time adjusting to life with the band?

I was having a really hard time for a couple weeks after I got the band. I was losing like crazy immediately after the surgery but ywo weeks after my post op my weight loss started to trickle off. I am happy to say I have not gained anything, but a I haven't lost anything additional either. I'm having some troubles with my doctor, I really need a fill so I can get started and they never call back. I was banded 6/30/08 and my first fill wont be until probably 10/14/08. My main problem right now is that I can still eat the way I did b4 I got banded, I don't allow myself to, but its scary! Since I don't have any restriction yet, I have taken to just plain old starving myself and taking these organic appetite supressants so I won't let the food get the best of me! But it was quite a shock to my life
  19. I just want everyone to know today I received my surgery date which is 10/29/12. I have serveral appointments to make, prep for a 2 week fast and shopping for essentials after surgery. I am excited. I have bcbs insurance and after all paperwork was submitted it only took 3 days for approval. I want everyone who participates in responses and post thier journeys (good or bad) how informative and extremely helpful it has been to me. Truly if you are not a participant in this journey, most people can never understand where we have to go mentally and physically. For you pre and post sleevers I congradulate and honor your presence for truly you are people of courage, insight, preservance and you dared to dream that your lives count! I will be posting various aspects of my journey! I welcome your comments.
  20. I don't think I've ever had this many compliments from total strangers as I had just now. I was in the ladies' dressing room at my gym before i worked out, and the cleaning lady stopped me to say, "You have lost so much weight.... I just wanted to tell you." When I finished my 65 minute elliptical workout, the woman next to me said I INSPIRED HER! Then, as I was sitting in the lobby, waiting for my husband to finish his workout, another woman came up to me and said, " I've been wanting to tell you this for a few weeks, but you rock that elliptical workout." I was in such shock bc you would have to understand where I came from when I started exercising last June. I really couldn't do 10 minutes on that elliptical. The day I went 30 minutes, I went into the dressing room and cried. I pushed myself to get to that 45 minute mark, and for the past three months, I've been working out an hour a day on that machine. I'm inspired by so many others in that gym, and today I inspired someone else! My husband put his arm around me as we walked out of that gym together today, and I felt proud of myself for no longer being, Tammie, The Couch Potato!!!!!
  21. Are you on only clear protein? I know those clear Isopure drinks are putrid, but they have so much protein. It's the after-taste that kill you. I drink them while holding my nose, and i keep holding it for about a minute afterwards, until the smell passes. I've heard Unjury: chicken soup and the unflavored kind are decent (I've ordered some - surgery on Friday - clear liquids for the first 10 days). I plan on mixing it with the water zero flavored drink which I quite like. I pray I don't have an aversion to milk and the like - I love milk- that would be a great loss. Good luck
  22. Hi there -- I am scheduled for surgery on 2/1. I am on clear liquid pre op diet (broth, Jello, popsicles, etc.) without any Protein, and expect to be on the same diet post surgery, so far it has been 5 days and I have 10 days ahead of me. I feel really weak and exhausted. Has anyone else faced this? I am hoping it is like other things where once you hit a wall and move on it gets better ... wishful thinking, I suppose. Thanks. Cynthia

    Nausea 2 months out

I was sleeved by Dr. Ariel Ortiz 2/19. I've had 2 days of pretty bad nausea. Not wanting to eat at all and some diahrea. Not sure what's causing it. My stomach doesn't hurt but is uncomfortable. I haven't experienced anything like this since surgery. Anyone else experience someone similar?
  24. Hi all - I was sleeved on 10/17. I stayed until 10/20 due to extreme nausea. I went into surgery at 251 pounds, gained a few pounds from IVs in hospital. I've lost 6.8 pounds since surgery (16 days ago), 0.8 in this past week. I actually gained 1.4 pounds (included in the 6.8 total pound weight loss equation) in the past 2 days. - I walk over 2 miles everyday. - I had my period when I came home from surgery, so I'm assuming it's not womanly hormones effecting my weight loss. - I'm within my Protein range of 60-75g of protein. - I drank 11 cups of approved fluids one day, and 10 cups the other day. - I ate 13 carbs one day, 21 the next. - I've had 30 grams of fat, and 6 grams of Fiber. Are these the culprit? I lost more weight each week before surgery drinking fluids all day, with no food. 4.16 pounds a week average, totaling 25 pounds in 6 weeks. I'm whining and complaining! I read this book about the sleeve from Dr. Duc Vuong and he states there is no such thing as a weight loss plateau - it just means you're not doing something right (after ruling out hormonal or medical issues) - either not exercising or eating slider foods / empty calories. My daily diet consists of Protein shakes, one hard boiled egg, 1-2 oz. of canned tuna, no more than a tbsp. of mayo, and cauliflower. I started a new job on Monday, but I'm not stressed out from it! Please make me feel better and advise me when my weight loss efforts are going to start working! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    10 More days....

10 more days until my initial consult with Dr. Enochs.:rolleyes2: I have faxed all the paperwork to the office and my 5 year weight history came from my OB/GYN. I really hope they have all the paperwork. I never have been so excited to get surgery. I have been trying to intake my water and protein in my diet.:blushing: I am trying to lose some weight before the consult because my insurance, BCBS will only accept the lap band if you have a BMI of under 50. I am right on the borderline. If you have a BMI over 50 my insurance wants you the have the gastric by-pass. I don’t really want to go that right. I am stepping up my Curves :w00t:workout and not eating many sweets:sneaky:. I don’t have a scale at home and I am thinking about getting one. I never had a scale in the house growing up. My mom is overweight, her mother is overweight and my great grandmother was overweight. See a pattern. For now, I am trying to patient and pray everyday that I get approved for surgery.
