  1. You just need to find the right strain that works for you! Not all of them will make you hungry, and if it does just make good choices and eat healthy. There are tons of doctors prescribing meds every day. A lot of the side effects are increased hunger and weight gain. This thread (well, the ignorant comments) made me laugh! So thankful for my cannabis script;)
  2. I have had my band for exactly 9 years as of yesterday and I had an upper gi done yesterday due to issues with dysphagia, severe acid reflux and weight gain. Four weeks ago my surgeon removed 1cc of fluid and that has helped with the acid reflux severity at night but hasn't gotten rid of it entirely. I had no restriction and gained 15 pounds in 4 weeks ???????? However yesterday at my appointment after my upper gi, my doctor told me my band looks good but I have a small flap that could be considered a small slip but it's not too much to worry about yet and that my pouch is asymmetrical and bigger than it should be. He said that we are going to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or I don't lose any weight more weight that we may look into a revision. He suggested a sleeve since my bmi is "low" (my bmi is 40). Wouldn't I qualify for bypass since I have co-morbidalities? (Sp) I'm so afraid of surgery now that I'm older but I'm also afraid of gaining all this weight back. I lost 80 pounds but I've gained 35 back just in the past few months
  3. I'm done. I think I've come to the end of my journey. So I haven't weighed myself since after Halloween. I had lost 13 lbs in 2 months. I got off my diet when I got really sick and was in the hospital for kidney failure. Was told not to drink Protein shakes because my kidneys can't handle the protein right now. I couldn't really exercise, I was a mess. I weighed in at 296 today. I'm back at my starting weight from September. My heart sank. My stomach feels like it's going to fall out of my butt. It took more than 2 months to lose 13 measly pounds and I gained it all back in 3 weeks. I weighed in at the hospital and my doctor said the weight gain could be Fluid retention because I was all swollen. The swelling has gone down immensely and I'm still at a high weight. So I'm just a failure. What's going to happen if during my 6 week Protein shake diet my kidneys fail again and I can't use Protein Shakes? My nephrologist said I will be ok to have surgery and if I have to I can probably push the diet a little sooner to foods but still. I'm a wreck. I'm really scared.

    Starved!

hi stephh! i just had my baby 9-28-15. i started at 257 and was reached my goal of 150 when i was 14months out, then two weeks later i found out i was pregnant. i too was only taking in about 700-800 pre pregnancy. around 13 weeks pregnant i started getting insanely hungry, literally every two hours. for me it really didn't ease up until i was about 32weeks. my dr wanted me to take in about 1800 calories a day i ended up putting on 42lbs in total. i lost 15lbs after my c section taking me from 192 to 177. i have been stuck there for the past two minths unfortunately, the scale just doesn't want to move for me. keep taking in as much Protein as you can. keep high protein Snacks with you if you're getting hungry often! congratulations on your pregnancy, you can pm me if any questions Thank you so much for responding!!!!!! I feel like I'm in the exact same scenario you were. I feel so much better knowing that someone else is hungry too. I was afraid of it being head hunger. Congratulations on your new baby! How was your pregnancy besides being hungry? Had you been pregnant before? Was it different? Sorry, I have SO many questions!!! Your weight gain doesn't seem bad to me. It seems like a manageable weight and will probably come off. I already have argued with my Dr about gaining weight... He said I could aim for 10-20 pounds because I'm at the top end of my healthy weight range. So far, I've stayed steady, but I'm not very far along. i sent you some photos in pm

He said I could aim for 10-20 pounds because I'm at the top end of my healthy weight range. So far, I've stayed steady, but I'm not very far along. this was my 3rd pregnancy and csection. my first two were before my sleeve and i was already over 200lbs wih them. i never got sick with my preop pregnancies, but this one i did. i felt like i had two modes i was either hungry or.nauseated lol. they kept telling me during my sonos that the baby was small she was the smallest of.my children but was still a healthy 6.5lbs with no complications. during the first trimester i put on 4lbs. i put most of the weight on in the second trimester and honestly it took me a bit.of time to come to terms with that scale going up. i.worked really hard to get down to 150. which is why im so frustrated with the scale not.moving now. is this you first? when are you due?
  7. Ok, I just got off the phone with my insurance and they said weight gain would not effect me since I'm already approved but I'm still going to try to get the extra weight off before the surgery so liquid diet, here I come Thank you for your response and guidance!!

    Phentermine after gastric sleeve

Well, for me, I had WLS in order to be healthier. Taking a drug that raises my blood pressure and increases my chances of cardiac disease kind of defeats that purpose. Thanks anyways, but I'll stick with a healthy diet, smart food choices and physical activity to keep my weight off. THATS what I signed up for. And if a bariatric patient is having difficulty following the guidelines, their doctor ought to be prescribing counseling or therapy, not drugs. And what I gather from the OP, this is someone early out of surgery, not someone struggling with long term weight gain. She only has two posts...one asking how soon they can drink soda and the other how soon they can take amphetamines for a little "pep". That was the scenario I assumed from the post and what I based my response on.
  9. After you get approved by your insurance to have the WLS, is there anyway you can be denied if you gain weight before you have the surgery?

    insurance vs. co-morbidity

I would definitely get a note from your doctor who is treating your lymphedema to send in with your preauthorization that states that the recent weight gain was due to this issue. If they mark the date that you started having issues with it and coincides with the time you started gaining weight it will definitely help.

I have sweet cravings at times over a year out. I did experience dumping syndrome...no fun. Anyway, I eat Atkins Endulge snacks, sugar free or no sugar added ice pops, fruits. These help with the cravings, are lower carbs and do not make me feel guilty or suffer weight gain when eaten in moderation. Congratulations on your weight loss btw.
  12. A VSG procedure results in reducing the capacity of your stomach. That's it. That's all it does. I have NEVER read of a true "failed" sleeve. Stalls are normal. Failing to meet goal is not uncommon. Gaining all your weight back can happen. But NONE of these so called failures are the result of your sleeve not doing what it's supposed to do. "failures" are thpically the result of poor choices, unrealistic expectations, certain medications that cause weight gain, and/or other medical conditions. However, if you can eat 4-6 cups of food in one sitting, then yes, you have a failed sleeve. And, like cowgirljane mentioned, you can't possibly declare weight loss success or failure until you are at the very least a year or two out. And true success is really never reached....you not failing your sleeve is a challenge to be met every day for the rest of your life.

    One year!

Excellent post! I appreciate your perspective a year out and hope I have the same as I reach that point. I'm only a couple months out but already am starting to experience some of the things you mentioned. Your comment about the sleeve always being available as a tool is spot on. I had to travel for a 10 day business trip over the last two weeks and in the past that would have resulted in a 4 or 5 pound weight gain. Even though I wasn't able to totally follow my nutrition plan, because of the limitations of the sleeve I was still able to lose two pounds during that trip. I also agree with your thoughts about setting short term, achieveable goals. I've decided that instead of setting scale goals I use clothing sizes. Setting a target of reducing to the next lower size seems like a reasonable target. I've already been able to hit two of these and am just a week or two away from another. Keep up the good work!

I Am Thankful For My Stall

I keep coming back to these boards because of posts like this. I have almost stopped a couple of times because of super sensitive people or people who feel its there duty to tell me when they feel I am being "mean" to someone (I am direct when I detect people trying to "bargain" their way to poor behavior or having a pity party!) But this post alone has made it worthwhile for me. I have had 2 long stalls in the 29 weeks since I had my surgery. Both lasted for a month. The first one was the dreaded 3 week and was very frustrating. However, I could read here how this was normal and to quit worrying about it. I put the scale away and stopped weighing myself everyday, and instead just checked every week or so. After the stall ended, the weight fell off very rapidly. My waist went from a 48 to a 36 in a matter of 5 months. Stalled again around Haloween and just weighed again this morning to find I was losing pounds again. Am actually looking to lose about 5 more pounds and then start adding weight gain shakes into my diet to stop losing weight. My doctor doesn't want me to lose anymore. Weird place for me to be to say the least!

    VSG to DS

Sorry no advice to give, but I am curious...to what do you attribute your weight gain too? Poor diet? Lack of exercise? Not asking to be critical of you, but I am curious on what the mode of failure was for you and your sleeve. Thanks!
  16. I need help. I am 3 years out having had the vertical sleeve surgery February 2013. I went from 220 lbs to 134 at my lowest weight. I felt amazing! I fluctuated from 135 to 140 and that was fine by me but over the past year my weight is now around 154 lbs. I'm hungry and overeat all the time. Don't get me wrong, I'm miserable after I eat that much but I have continued to over eat. If anyone can tell me how to get back on track I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you for any information you can provide. Sincerely, Linda H.
  17. Hypoglycemia is on track because I had to eat alot of fat and carbs to get it there because of low blood sugar and now a ton of weight gain. This surgery is NOT for everyone and I say that unapologetically

    insurance vs. co-morbidity

Impossible to say unless it's been actually presented to the Plan for approval, BUT, weight gain from lymphedema is hardly the same thing as weight gain from overeating. Lymphedema is not a contributor to obesity, though obesity may exacerbate lymphedema. Your NUT is not the expert in insurance approvals, your surgeon's insurance coordinator is. That is the person to speak to with your question. You don't say who your new insurance will be.

    insurance vs. co-morbidity

OK, so I have UHC as my insurance right now. But my current plan does not cover the surgery. I am switching to a plan that does cover it, but that will not be effective until Jan 1. In the mean time, I have been going to regular NUT visits (I have been working on this for over a year now, do to insurance changes). Over the last 3 months I have seen some weight gain, and my GP finally referred me to a vascular center. This new Dr. gave me the diagnosis of lymphedema that has gotten inflamed because of outside issues. These outside issues mostly revolve around stress (of a few different types and happened at the same time). I was told by my NUT that for most insurances I need to be at or below my starting weight in order to have surgery. Right now, because of the lymphedema, I am above my starting weight. since lymphedema does not have a "cure" and there is treatment, but it takes time for the treatment to be effective. I was also told that WLS will help with the lymphedema Does anyone have any advise on how I should proceed in the process? I was planning on having the surgery in Feb/Mar with the new ins.... is that now going to be delayed?

Anyone have an over 50 BMI?

That was the case for me, I was over 60bmi and as such my insurance did not require me to do the 6months physician weight loss plan. but despite being given the green light, I opted for the 6 physician visits, because I wanted to learn more about my body and the food I consumed and as i result i learned more about me. It was sort of strange, every one at my surgeons office from the Physician assistant to the NUT asked me why i wanted to do it this way, and my response was something like, surgery is not a silver bullet, if I don't mentally prepare I will fail.. I am glad I took the extra time.. despite the extra weight gain and pressure to get under 400lbs to even have the surgery, it was worth the battle for me.

Week 2 and no weight loss

Two things are possible, and one of them was my story as well. First possibility: I lost about 20 lbs during pre-op as well (2 weeks), and that makes it more likely that a stall will occur right away after surgery. It will pick up again, I promise. Second possibility: you may have gotten a lot of Fluid in the hospital from the IV...this initial would cause weight gain that can take up to a week to completely get out of your system. So, you may have lost some fat already, but until you completely lose the excess fluid weight, you will not see a net loss.

    Questions for Alcohol Drinkers ONLY!

I had a toast (just a sip of champagne) 2 months after surgery. About 3 months out, I started having a glass of wine every now and then. It's never had any adverse affects on me at all, I didn't get "tipsy" as quickly as some, it was pretty much like it was before surgery. I may have 1 glass of wine a couple of times a month............ so no weight gain because of it, no problems at all
