    Vegetarian & Bypass

I've been a vegetarian for 18 years and a part-time vegan for about 2 years. I highly recommend Dr Garth Davis' new book called Protein-aholic. He's also on FB and actually responded to a question I asked. He's a bariatric surgeon who recommends vegan. I will still do dairy for a while, but once I can eat real food I will phase it out slowly. I've noticed a lot of people on here are keto, basically Atkins. It's expensive, and not easy to maintain long term. I've read numerous peer-reviewed studies and meta-studies that say we're eating way too much protein. I'm nowhere near any kind of expertise on diet and nutrition, but I know how I feel when I eat mostly plant-based vs. a heavy animal protein diet. And I flat out refuse to believe that fruits are bad for us. Juice is debatable. But I will never cut out whole fruit and starchy veggies like potatoes. Just my 2 cents.
  2. Hi Guys I recently committed myself to change my lifestyle and take upon myself a vegetarian lifestyle. But now I'm having surgery, my dietician is recommended I up my protein with chicken and meat. Anyone here able to maintain being vegetarian without getting protein deficient? Thanks
  3. Hi again everyone! So far I cannot get the chewable vitamins down. I’ve been doing flintstones to compensate at least a little, but I know they’re not enough. I just can’t keep the Celebrate down and I was told I can’t do capsules until six months out. So, have any of you tried the patches and had lab work done after? We’re the labs ok? If you haven’t done patches, have you tried the Tespo thing? Did that work for you? I’m just really trying to get my vitamins. I haven’t been able to keep any meat down 2 months after surgery, but I love the isopure protein powder. Guess I’m going vegetarian. :) Anyway, I found a way around the protein issue, so now I’m looking for a solution to the vitamin issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. 4. I completely agree with @jess9395. There is more than one way to "skin a cat". Your food plan should be catered to you individual makeup and lifestyle. I know some people who can eat soft boiled eggs on day 3. Why not? It's Protein and healthy fat. I am a vegetarian with severe food allergies. My eating plan is very different than most of the folks on these forums. Because my diet is plant based my carb intake is higher than most. Guess what? I have been able to lose steadily with no problems. In short cookie cutter treatments don't work because we are individuals, not clones. You should be having ongoing conversations with the medical team you chose to care for your unique needs.

    no more meat...

Hi Jodi - I don't eat pork, red meat or poultry - just seafood and vegetarian Protein. Here is the link to my blog: http://violinistwithaband.blogspot.com/ If you look on the left hand side underneath the "Followers" there is a list of recipes that I've posted. There are recipes for salmon, walleye, shrimp, cod, crab cakes (2 different types), and cioppino (there are a bunch of other recipes, but those are the seafood ones). I have tons of seafood recipes that I haven't posted also, so if you're looking for something specific, just let me know
  6. I felt the same way. I tried so many other programs and diets, including organic/vegetarian as well. At the end of the day, I didn't stick to it and went back to old behaviors. I had my sleeve surgery done pretty recently and have no regrets. The weight will come off. I honestly don't feel hunger, sometimes in my head but it doesn't really matter because I can't really eat anyway. So, to answer your question, it works. However, my understanding is that you do have to adjust your lifestyle and make some lifelong decisions about nutrition and exercise in order to maintain the loss. I've seen others post here that they gained their weight back but I've also seen so many more success stories. One of my main concerns was addiction transfer. I made a conscious decision that after the surgery, alcohol would no longer be consumed by me. I haven't ever really been into booze beforehand but know that many patients do turn to alcohol and I don't want to be one of them. I also spent over 6 months in counseling to make sure I knew what I was in for mentally and had an established relationship with someone for after the surgery as well. Hope that helps!!

    How often do you PB?

Thank you for explaining that to me. I feel stupid. I have not had any PB's yet, but I am only seven weeks in. I think I am paranoid and still kinda stay on foods that can be mushed up with a fork and foods that don't clump up. I'm sure my day is coming because I have only had one fill (1.2cc) and don't have a lot of restriction yet. My husband says I am turning into a health freak, but he kinda likes it because it makes him eat better too. I really stay on vegetables most of the time because they go down easily. I have also started experimenting with a totally organic diet, however, that is not the easiest thing to do because I live in a small town and organic items are hard to come by. I have to grocery shop about 30 miles away for my organic things. I started using organic because I am prone to miagraines and processed foods have preservitives and additives that are major miagraine triggers for me. After being banded and trying to stick to a semi-vegetarian/organic diet I haven't had a single miagraine. I am so glad I have been able to treat my headaches with a diet change. I had tried it before, but not to this extent.
  8. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one! I think the the most wasteful transition was from Paleo to vegetarian. Can you imagine?

    Any vegetarian sleevers?

I'm a vegetarian 4 weeks postop. I was told to watch quinoa because it swells in the tummy taking up more space. I am still on purees so I mix goat cheese, cottage cheese, silken tofu, yogurt or protein powders into my soups. Next week I get eggs so that will certainly boost protein. Its not impossible especially if you continue at least one shake a day.
  10. ElyQuint

    Any vegetarian sleevers?

I don't have much issue. I eat eggs and tofu daily. Quiche for breakfast, tofu and veggies for lunch, cheese or nuts for snack and dinner is usually dannon light and fit with 2x protein or cottage cheese with some berries and seeds. You can add protein powder to anything! I'm at 800 to 900 calories daily. If I have room I have some apple slices and protein for dessert. I think vegan would be impossible but vegetarian is easy peasy.

    Invincible, or not?

Yes, there are odd things that I have to manage with my sleeve but there were things I had to manage with what I ate before surgery. I had a dodgy digestive system with sensitivities & intolerances. Still dodgy with a couple of other considerations now. Some of the changes I made to what I eat can limit my options but generally I can find a few options I can eat or can eat around. I’m also much more aware of my body’s response & reactions to various foods & situations then ever before. I look at it as being a good thing & part of eating mindfully. I think much of the portion size issue is really about people’s inaccurate perception of what is an appropriate portion size. We are confronted with what are jumbo size portions that are 2, 3 or more what is a recommended size & we think they are normal. Take note of how much & what other slimmer people eat & you’ll realise you are much like them. The reality is the portion we eat is about what everyone should be eating. It only looks small because of the excessive portion sizes. Sure, I have days when my energy is lower. Some is because of my low blood pressure. But when I stop & reflect before surgery I had days when my energy was low too but then it was because of my weight. Generally though I’m certainly fitter & stronger than I was before & that outweighs (pun) the odd day I feel weak or need a nap. Most of my family & friends are aware of my food preferences & portion needs. They make allowances for them much the same way as they would with someone with a food allergy or who was vegetarian or vegan, etc. It just all takes time. From you understanding your body, needs & changes to others understanding the changes you’ve made. You don’t have to explain your surgery if you don’t want to. Sometimes just saying I’m not hungry or I’m seeing a dietician or I’m trying a new way of eating is more than enough if you feel you need to explain. Ultimately what you choose to put in your mouth is nobody’s business but yours.

    Veterans: Question RE: bowel movements

I'm a little over a year out. I'm also vegetarian. Pre-op I went pretty much 2 hours after each meal. I went 2 -3 times a day regularly. Post-op my doctor started me on colace for the first 30days. I had my first BM on day 5. I had a BM every day til about maybe 6mths in. Now I probably have a BM anywhere from 1 - 3 times a day depending on what I eat. A few weeks ago without thinking I had steel cut oats for breakfast and a kale salad for lunch and diner. The next day was a truly "cleansing" experience.

    ALWAYS A FAILURE

@Sweetsoul oh how I understand how hard it is. I am 7” shorter than you. I can’t excercise due to chronic illness but I understand avoiding the gym. In all reality exercise does not help with weight loss. Building muscle (which I cannot do) helps burn fat, but I meant to say is I’ve been here before and I fought so hard the first time and it’s hard, I was losing my ability to taste food and I wasn’t getting hungry or full signals but I felt that needs to just want something good, something rich with flavor, strong taste. Never was a snacker either, love salt need salt fo orthostatic intolerance. I tried vegetarian back then too when I couldn’t tolerate meats. I had been doing extreme low carb and calorie counting to lose weight And I finally did but it was extreme under 10 net carbs and very low calorie. but wanted to add more vegetables and vegetarian foods. I was feeling sick. And guess what my weight crept up. Somehow I managed the best I could but always on the brink of gaining until I eventually ended up having drastic weight gain. Maybe because my gallbladder went bad and I wasn’t processing fats but I was eating more greens, kale salads, vegetarian foods and 800 calories yet gaining, no snacking, I felt like a total failure. And I eventually was able to seek out gastric bypass surgery. And have had to recreate my way of eating. I’m finding salt and fats an issue now and vegetables even though I relied heavily on them before I can’t eat much salt and will need to treat my orthostatic intolerance some other way. But you are right in your approach to understanding the problem. I feel you I do. It’s my fear long term so I’m working so hard on what my long term habits need to be especially as things change. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your surgeon and the nutritionist you worked with too and re-evaluate where you are now. I know it’s easier said than done I’m afraid of my surgeon visits after some issues from my own surgery. That they don’t understand my medical issues outside of surgery. But you won’t know unless you take the step. try to find other things to compensate for what salt offers. It’s hard. I hope my response isn’t too forward. To obnoxious. You came pretty far and maintained well and maybe at some point you can take a step further don’t worry. I’m slow in moving forward with food, I have food issues. You are fairly tall too and some people are naturally curvy. I just know you didn’t fail especially because you are giving it good honest evaluation and thought.

I keep seeing you can have sugar

I found a vegetarian protein mix that I can tolerate but I mix it in strawberries and bananas to make my smoothies and that is sugar a fruit sugar. I love the new Protein Boost the only premade protein drink I really like. I used to drink the EAS protein but this is so much better. What happens when you eat sugar and not SF? Does it make you sick?

    I'M VEGETARIAN!

There are Protein supplements that you'll learn about. I'm sure you know that whole grains and legumes together provide complete protein, etc., etc. (Watch the amounts!!) There are options for you and plenty of sources of info. (I'm not the source, though, as I'm not vegetarian.)

Oh, cool! Yeah, I'm in the same boat at the moment. Lacto-ovo vegetarian (no gelatin), but I'd love to go vegan again when I hit goal. Good luck!

    Advice ?

At this point, you can probably try to get your Proteins from whole foods and not the shakes. I could not do the shakes post-op...they ALL make me sick. So I do meats during the day. A few things I noticed, you said you are doing green tea...stop that for a while, you do sound dehydrated and tea dehydrates. Try to just stick with Water (flavored with MiO/CL if you have to). Next, even if you are not hungry...eat. It really is that simple. I go from hunger to stuffed. I started buying small snack size baggies and I put small meats (or other heavy proteins if you are a vegetarian) in them and carry them with me. I eat based on time because sometimes I'll look up and realize I skipped a meal because the hunger didn't kick in when I thought it would. Take a few small bites, wait a few minutes, then repeat for about a half hour. I found I can keep my food down this way. If I try to just eat I throw it all up. It sucks but it is the only way to nourish my body. Avoid cheese for a bit, unless it is cottage cheese. It seems like you are using this as your main staple and while it is a healthy choice, your focus right now should be meats/heavier proteins if you are vegetarian. If you can do greek yogurt, try that also. Don't worry about adding extra Protein if it makes you sick. Do this for a week or so and you may find you feel a bit better about things. The key is to time your meals if you have no hunger. It really is the only way to get it all in.

8 days post op and STARVING and WEAK - HELP!

Just to clarify - I am supposed to drink at least 64 oz of water a day. The 1/4 cup per hour is for things other than water. I have tried to call my dietician today but she wasn't in. Maybe the 1/4 cup is a minimum and not a maximum? Hell, maybe I've got it all wrong. But I do know it says to add 25-30 g of protein a day. Well when I can't eat meat, peanut butter, cheese, or well, anything that has real protein in it I am assuming to "add" 25-30 g a day would be all the protein I am getting. I have had Carnation Instant Breakfast and hi-protein slim fast, I will definetely try the Isopure shake. I'm still thinking about trying an egg and just keeping my fingers crossed. But I think for dinner I am going to have pureed vegetarian chili and hope that is OK. Thanks for all the advice and please keep it coming!

    Hi Everyone from MA

Congrats - your journey is just beginning.....ricotta - for now just put some good marinara on top of a layer of ricotta and microwave to heat and it is yummy.... later on when you add in meat you can put some frozen soy crumbles (in the freezer section by the vegetarian burgers etc) under the cheese and you have a great fake protein rich lasagna. This is a comfort food and you will love it. And I think Suzanne Somers or South Beach make some kind of dessert with ricotta.... I 'll have to explore that. Well take it slow with adding in the real food and keep the proteins #1. We'll be cheering you on! Sue PS - I love ricotta  - cottage cheese is :cursing: YUK

    Question

My surgeon wants patients off protein supplements after 6 weeks--he wants you to start getting at least 60 g of protein from meals alone. At first you can use up to one supplement if you are falling short, but he wants you to wean off of them. So I would say the answer is no, unless you aren't getting enough protein from your food--in which case you would probably want to look at your diet, bc even as a vegetarian, I can get close to 20 g protein/meal and if I'm short, I have a Greek yogurt. I do still use supplements/powders sparingly when I'm trying to get above 80 go of protein, though I don't plan to do it forever. I think it would be easier to get all from solids if you aren't a vegetarian.
  22. 15 weeks out from VSG, DOS 10-5-17 SUSHI RICE Rice, seasoned miran, soy, avocado, cucumber, ebi (shrimp) furikake sprinkles (there are various kinds if you prefer not to eat seafood), sesame seed, carrot, sriracha, Korean savory roasted seaweed snack sheets. Mmm Mmm good! PHOTO: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPDrMtCBzR8/?taken-by=bridgescrossingbridges You can add baked tofu instead of the Ebi if you dont consume seafood.
  23. Yesterday here's what I had: B: Yoplait vanilla Yogurt L: Vegetarian Vegetable Soup (1 can, no Water added) and 3 crackers D: Boca Burger patty with ketchup, mustard, and relish S: Jello pudding and couple of chips with queso (I couldn't resist!) Also, between 70 and 80 ounces of water/tea and 2 Flintstones daily. Some of what you can eat will determine what/when your restriction is. I am *very* tight in the mornings and pretty loose about 4, getting tighter again by bedtime, so lunch and an early dinner are when I try to pack in my nutrients.

    January Sleevers

Hi guys! January 18th with Dr, Ali in Sacramento at UCDavis Med Center. Once I decided to try and get approval, it only took me 6 weeks to go from my first meeting to getting my date. The staff has been awesome. I am 57 and been dieting most of my life. I started having health problems... high BP, High cholesterol and triglicerides... and A-fib. as well as arthritis. All just this year. Also my best friend found out he had brain cancer, and I just decided to get off my a*s and try something different to improve my health. I eat pretty clean, and have gotten my exercise up to 4 days a week over the past 2 years, but have stayed the same weight. I think the sleeve is just the thing I need to get my weight going in the right direction...DOWN. I feel like I'm going to miss the GIANT salads I used to eat... but am a good cook and know I will make a delicious life for myself...even if the portions are smaller. Also... I am a vegetarian, and this will perhaps make it harder to find proteins while eating out... Im glad I love beans and Tofu!

    G'day from Australia

Thanks Cammy for all the information, I haven't really had the opportunity to ask the questions about the cost of replacement/complications, nor about the cost of fills, but i'm sure the cost would be well worth it! It's great to meet other Aussies who have been banded or that are going through what I am going through, in fact one of my Mum's clients today gave my mum the number of her sister in law who was also banded in January, so I will call her tomorrow and have a chat with her, she only lives on the sunshine coast too. Congrats with the loss too, bet you feel so much better for it? I am into my second week of pre op diet, i'm a vegetarian too so it much it that much harder, am so damn hungry! Deyanne, i think America wouldn't know what hit them if we rocked up eh? I've got enough personality for about 3 people. Although Zoe, that Bandsters exchange sounds wicked.... Vinesqueen, keep in touch when you come over to OZ, which city will you go to?
