    Eating schedule

    I generally do 8am - breakfast, 10:30 - snack, 1:00 - lunch, 3:30 - snack, 6:00 - dinner, 8- snack. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. An update-- My second appointment with the dietitian went well. She had me start using the My Fitness Pal app again, and I lost about 10 pounds in the month between appointments. (Then I got cocky and started "saying goodbye" to foods... now I'm back on track) After seeing the psychologist again, she talked with the therapist I'd started seeing on a weekly basis and decided to clear me for surgery. I plan to continue therapy for as long as it takes to get my head in a good place--and I will probably keep going occasionally after that to keep myself in check. I'm really happy with the therapist I'm working with--I've been to others, and I never felt like they got to the root of my problems like she has been able to do. I have some really deep-seated issues with perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, being hyper-critical of myself--things that have ironically lead to, among other problems, my obesity. Anyway, I got through all the other testing--bloodwork, EKG, chest x-ray--and got just insurance approval today. My surgery date is June 15th! Really excited but also starting to freak out!

    1st blog "work out regimen"!

Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays of each week I go to the gym. A day of rest in between to help build the muscles and give them a rest. My work out regimen consists of cardio and weight machines. I spend a total of 55 minutes on the bike. 50 minutes with my heart rate at 144 bps and a 5 minutes cool down. This yields 19 miles and burns approximately 300 calories. I move to the weight machines where I do 2 sets of 12 reps at the highest weight possible that will have me almost straining to complete the 2nd set of reps. I am toning and not trying to build muscle.

    5 days post op question

yeah, i'm so thristy when eating too and after, my mouth gets so dry. I don't wait 30-45mins. before though, i was told to wait 10 mins. because the water goes right through the band, I am still on full liquids and some mushies, i've only had oatmeal and scrambled eggs. I can't believe i am full on one egg!
  5. Hi everyone, I've done Atkins etc a few times before with great success. Usually I lose weight fairly quickly for at least the first 2-3 months. I just had my first fill after having my band empty for 5 years and the band is working great. I eat 1 cup per meal, Protein first and and then mostly green veggies. I stay under 20g carbs per day and that's mostly real/ not processed food ( no atkins bars etc). I lost 17.5 lbs during the first few weeks which was fantastic but for about 10 days now the scales have barely moved. I'm wondering if the small portions could actually slow weightloss down while low carbing? What were your experiences? I've tried a fat fast since yesterday and again no loss.
  6. I am a revised Bandster. I had my surgery Dec 2010 and my revision May 2011. I'm back to the beginning with fills and that whole process. It's daunting and frustrating. I wish you the best. I was lucky that I only lost weight because of the slip (which doesn't count as real weightloss for me) so I'm maintaining at the weight I was before the slip. I have 20 lbs to go. 10 lbs will get me to a normal bmi.
  7. If you struggle with reflux or GERD, I would highly suggest the bypass. 9 times out of 10 it gets worse after the sleeve. That is the one and only reason I ever regretted having the sleeve as opposed to the bypass. But it's controlled with meds, so no biggie.

    6 YEARS!

Yes it is amazing how many patients eventually revise to a sleeve or a gastric bypass, the band seems to be a quick grab for cash costing around 8K, in actual theatre and equipment cost is less than 3K, 10 of those is 30K and that would be a weekly work for WL Dr in NSW

How do I measure liquid pain med?

5ml = 1 teaspoon So 10-15 ml would be 2-3 teaspoons. Try using a graduated cup, like the ones they give with kids meds or cough syrup. Kitchen teasoons are all different and may not give an accurate measurement. Hope this helps.

    Its Happening

Its all happening so fast. From knee injury, to my husband bringing home a hospital newsletter about a woman who had to lose weight due to knee problems (which she did through the lap band!). I decided to go to an info session (3 actually), and 10 days later here we are. Had my doc consult, nurse consult, psych consult two days ago. Surgery date approved (self pay) for Sept 3rd. Pre-op yesterday. I am following a 800 cal diet to lose 10lbs (I'm hungry!!!!) - so far lost 4lbs so should work. I haven't really thought about the actual surgery. I am very excited about the possibilities but a little nervous. As I do more research, I become convinced the band is the right thing but so many people are talking about the sleeve that I sometimes second guess myself. I may call my dr next week to talk. I really dont want to have more than 1/2 my stomach removed and it is so new and so untested but I am a bit worried about all the problems I have read about with the band - I must admit though, it seems many more people have few problems than those that do have issues. I guess there are no guarantees with either and I really like the fact that the band allows you to recover so quickly. My Dr is part of a "band only" practice and they are a center of excellence having done over 4000 surgeries so I know they know what they are doing at least! My history is overweight from age 14. BMI of 30 at age 18. Been on over 85 diets and failed eventually at every one. So here I am. Ready, willing and able to go for it on Sept 3rd!

    Day 1

So for my surgery I have to go on a two week liquid diet. This consist of sugar free jello, broth, sugar free popsicles (which who doesn't want these in the middle of winter), protein shakes, and 1 protein bar a day. My first protein shake I made was vanilla. The consistency and smell made me gag, no gonna lie. So I doubled the water and I think it is watered down enough for me to handle. I am taking a sip of it and chasing it with water. I am on my second sugar free jello which (oddly enough) not that filling. I know it sounds like I am whining...because I am. BUT I feel like venting it out on my blog is better than taking it out of someone else around me. I have chopped my protein bar into three pieces so I can have one with breakfast lunch and dinner. I feel like this way I can "eat" something with each meal. It is only 10:30 but I am already looking forward to my broth.

    Not getting full, no energy

I was the same way with the lack of restriction. I didn't feel it at first....I could pretty easily eat more than my 1-2 oz I was supposed to have (especially soup!) And I remember thinking how very easy it would be to go back to my old binging ways. Well, long story short, about 4 weeks after surgery I was eating lean turkey....which was ok on my plan at that time but I was eating far too fast, not chewing, not paying attention to portion size. and about 10 bites in I was in a lot of pain and ended up vomiting it all back up. Thankfully I didn't do any damage to my pouch but it sure scared me. And really showed me just how important it is that I fix my 'head'.... Now that I'm eating solid foods it is much easier to feel it too. I also think I never really understood what "full" felt like. I always thought it was the painful, uncomfortable, going to explode feeling but it's not. After talking to my NUT, I now know that full for me is more of a slight heaviness in my stomach - and when I feel that I know the next bite or two will send me over the top.

    1st step

I have been heavy since my teens. Struggled for 24 years while in the Coast Guard to stay within required standard.. Which lead to my voluntold retirement. Since then my weight has been climbing even though I try to watch what i eat and try to stay active. I've had both knees operated on and the pain keeps me from doing too much in the form of exercise. I started researching gastric sleeve surgery in December. Talked to my wife and neighbors (neighbors both had bypass) and on Saturday I filled out and submitted the 10 page questionnaire to start the process with the local university hospital. I originally submitted and was approved for the sleeve with evolve weight loss but they are out of network and would be over 7k. In network would be 2k so trying again. Hopefully I attend the seminar on Thursday and get the show on the road!! Thanks to everyone here, reading your stories have really put my mind at ease regarding the process.
  14. I'm in need of size Xl or L in shirts/tops & size 12 or 10 in pants badly. Anything style will do, I just can't afford to go out & by used or new...Im on a tight budget.
  15. The Dietition I saw in the hsopital mumbled something about it having a 7 year life span. I'm seeing my dr (surgeon) today, for my first follow up appointment since surgery 6 weeks ago.I will ask him. Hopefully I will get my first fill/restriction also. I'm struggling a bit this last week with being hungry. I guess everything has a life span I certainly would not want to have the surgery every 10 years. Mind you in 10 years, they will have something new and wonderful I am sure. Another question is? Will the Health Insurances pay for a removal & or replacement? Especially if we have our weight down. I'll ask these questions today at my appointment. Wish me luck
  16. There seems to be some debate about this, and the band's website doesn't say, but I don't think the 10 year thing is valid. From what I've read, the band is made out of the same materials they use for replacement joints, and I know people who have had their hips or knees for more then 10 years. Yes, they do sometimes wear out, but the band doesn't get the stress and wear a joint would. Let us know what your doctor has to say.
  17. I've also been told that my band should be with me forever. In 10 or 15 years though if I'm told it has to be replaced, I don't think I'll be crushed. One the one hand, the technology will be better by then, so I'll probably end up happier anyway, and besides, it's possible I could tie the band replacement surgery into getting my tummy tightened a little bit. LOL As for Ms. Sharon... her reasons for removing the band were very surprising to me, however, I do believe it's best if she's still battling heavily with bulimia, which is what I read.

Burning More Calories Than You Eat

Myfitnesspal is the best. I'm only 10 weeks out from surgery and am still intensly focused on getting to my goal, so I try to only net between 300-500 calories. I eat about 300 calories per meal (Protein, veggies, fruit), 3 meals a day plus a snack in the afternon if needed. I also run every day, which burns enough calories to help me stay in my net range. It's different for everyone. I met with my nutritionist and reveiwed my plan. She made a few suggestions but said calorie wise I'm at a good target for me.

    Hooray!

Yay! I got my surgery date today! I have to go in for my pre-op appointment next Monday and my surgery is scheduled for Thursday, July 19. I am so happy that they were able to schedule a date so soon. I want to be off of my modified liquids diet before I go back to school (work). I will be 4 weeks post-op by then, and 12 weeks post-op by my brother-in-law's wedding. I can't wait for my body on the outside to match my personality on the inside. I am so excited! I am motivated to get as much weight as I can off before the wedding. Wahoo!
  22. I am curious as to how much time you need to take off work after surgery. I have a desk job but I work about 10 hours a day and I need to be quite alert and able to think. If my energy level is low, effecting concentration, I won’t be able to do anything - so might as well plan for a longer leave. Would 3 weeks be enough time?
  23. Eh, if it lasts 10 yeas, it lasted me 10 years.... But it may last forever. No one really knows.
