5 years out need advice please

Some great snack ideas there so thank you . I am vegetarian and have a lactose intolerance which makes it harder for me . I am finding that if I give myself a low calorie treat daily (usually in the evening) this gives me the satisfaction and I dont crave as much . If I stop myself from having something completely I want it all the more and end up binging . Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk

    Talking about the journey....

I love reading blogs that include personal experience with the band, so thank you. Also, I'm a vegetarian but "Santa knows I love meat, Mommy" just cracked me up She's too adorable!

    Any Vegetarians Here?

Hi Kelly girl! I eat eggs and dairy, but I get the organic and free range kind. There are really good "meaty" recipes from Robin Robertson. I think she puts out THE BEST cookbooks out there. Her recipes really helped us transition from heavy meat eaters to vegetarians. http://www.robinrobertson.com/ It's also important that your eating a balanced diet. Vegetarians have to be more careful that we are getting everything we need. Too often people just stop eating meat, then get cravings or not feel well because they are not eating a balanced diet and getting all the nutrients they need. In order to be a successful vegetarian, you must know how to feed your body correctly. Great info on how to be a vegetarian you can find here: http://www.goveg.com If you need resove, just go to http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp or http://www.animalactivist.com/vegetarian.asp and look at all the videos and read the articles. Good luck, Eileen
  4. Hi all, Newbie here. I am considering the Lap Band and I'm also a vegetarian. SO my protien sources will have to be different etc. I'm also concerned about not being able to eat the veggies due to Fiber, etc. What CAN'T you eat now that you could before? ALso, I think it would be great to give pre and post op food recommendations for vegetarians listed so we can shop and have the liquid and the mushie foods ready.

    Show Of Hands

I would like vegetarian choices for protein I don't eat meat.
  6. I've always ate meat and had no problem until after I was sleeved. Was sleeved 9/12 and since then everytime I eat meat including all seafood, I feel like vomitting. It's the taste and I don't like the way it feels in my mouth. This is so weird. What else can I do to get my protein in as I think I might become a vegetarian with all this.
  7. thanks, annie. yes, i always eat my protein first....i'm a vegetarian, but i make sure every meal has protein in it...eggs, tofu, fish, etc. i also wait 15 minutes before i eat and an hour after to drink anything. i'm hoping it's just something random going on...i was really hoping for some restriction this time around since all the weight i've lost for the last four months has been on sheer willpower.

    how often to eat

I live in India and we dont get tinned food or many options of high Protein. I am also a vegetarian most of the times...so its all the more difficult. But we have to go for protein shakes for the rest of our lives I think. Its a life long effort and i will do it.without going off the track!
  9. I wanna live where you are! I want milk straight from the farmer. How do you keep up with this? Is it due to allergies? My little one is a vegetarian and it is very difficult for me to cook three different dinners daily but I eat 4 oz my daughter doesn't eat meat and my son is 16 and eat everything all the time. It sounds like you are able to juggle many different needs or preferences. What do you use to sweeten anything, besides cane sugar? I have tried agave and stevia but they don't taste very good. Sorry your post caught my interest so I have a ton of questions.

ask a nutritionist - free advice offered

Hi there.. I haven't been banded yet, but trying to learn everything i can now....i am a vegetarian...i hear how important the proteins are.... I hardly eat them now(you could call me a pastaterian) what can i do after surgery to make sure to get enough without eating meat....thanks for any advice
  11. Just wanted to chime in and say hang in there! it sounds like you're making good progress, albeit not as quickly as you'd like. Think what it will be like once you get the drill down! You said you are a vegetarian, but you didn't mention vegan. So... here are some ideas. This is my meal plan (I'm almost a month out) and I get my Protein in every day: Bkfst: Protein shake Snack: String cheese Lunch: 1/2 cup refried Beans with 1/8 cup lowfat shredded cheese Snack: Dannon light and fit greek yogurt Dinner: Depending on where I am on the protein, I will go with 1/2 c cottage cheese or an egg over hard with 1/8 cup lowfat cheese. If I don't need the protein, I will go with tomato Soup or butternut squash soup (etc). . I realize this is a lot of dairy, but it is working for me GOOD LUCK! You can do this!
  12. Hi everyone, I NEED your help. I'm feeling very desperate right now!!!! I was sleeved on 6/3/2013 and have lost only 35 lbs since then. I saw on this website that people who were sleeved in June have lost almost double the amount I have lost. I don't know how to eat right. I'm eating small quantities of the same food I used to eat before surgery. I haven't changed my diet. I don't exercise. Plus I'm on some meds that make it difficult to loose weight. I'm doing EVERYTHING WRONG!!!!!! PLZ PLZ ADVISE ME HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT AGAIN!!!! I'm not loosing ANYMORE!!!!! I'm a vegetarian and have hard time finding Proteins. I'm eating way TOO MANY sweets!!!! I feel like I don't have control over myself anymore like before surgery. I'm hungry all the time or I skip meals. I'm also not following the Water rule and drink water right after I eat. Do I have to eat Protein at every meal?? PLZ ADVISE.......

    New Here

I am not a vegan or vegetarian I am afraid of meat because I have a hard time processing it. My stomach is very tight in the middle and sometimes meat makes me have nausea. The taste of meat is not appealing to me. I would to be able to eat it but the texture in my tummy and the way I feel when trying to process/digest it is not pleasant.

    Count down begins

Hi SA, downloaded the book on your advice, I agree it really looks great and will keep me busy reading for some time. My tips for the pre-op diet (and this will probably depend on the diet you are given), but if its Optifast - the Choc flavoured bars are really good and I ate loads of free salads and veggies. I am Vegetarian so this bit wasn't too hard, I did really miss having milk in coffee though. If you get stuck out and about without planned food the Subway salad bowl with all salads saved me heaps of times. As for Hospital - no real tips on what to pack, just the usual stuff. I'd probably say if you are planning to have any visitors to hospital leave it until the second day. I went in on a Thurs and was discharged Mon. Good luck with the Nut next week, if its anything like mine you will come back with pre-op, post op and beyond diet info. This is all very useful but also very well covered in your book.

    Vegetarian & Bypass

I've been a vegetarian most of my life. I'm scheduled to have bypass surgery Aug 21st, my nutritionist just said I may have to supplement with protien shakes and Greek yogurt for longer than meat eaters. She thinks it's perfectly healthy to be a vegetarian and have wls. Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Vegetarian & Bypass

Yep, been vegan for 13 years with no issues. Protein deficiency is virtually impossible in non-impoverished countries, so you'll be fine. In fact, my surgeon says being vegan is the #1 thing you can do the extend your life, WLS is #2. Vegetarian & Bypass

I've been a vegetarian for 18 years and a part-time vegan for about 2 years. I highly recommend Dr Garth Davis' new book called Protein-aholic. He's also on FB and actually responded to a question I asked. He's a bariatric surgeon who recommends vegan. I will still do dairy for a while, but once I can eat real food I will phase it out slowly. I've noticed a lot of people on here are keto, basically Atkins. It's expensive, and not easy to maintain long term. I've read numerous peer-reviewed studies and meta-studies that say we're eating way too much protein. I'm nowhere near any kind of expertise on diet and nutrition, but I know how I feel when I eat mostly plant-based vs. a heavy animal protein diet. And I flat out refuse to believe that fruits are bad for us. Juice is debatable. But I will never cut out whole fruit and starchy veggies like potatoes. Just my 2 cents.
  18. Hi Guys I recently committed myself to change my lifestyle and take upon myself a vegetarian lifestyle. But now I'm having surgery, my dietician is recommended I up my protein with chicken and meat. Anyone here able to maintain being vegetarian without getting protein deficient? Thanks
  19. Hi again everyone! So far I cannot get the chewable vitamins down. I’ve been doing flintstones to compensate at least a little, but I know they’re not enough. I just can’t keep the Celebrate down and I was told I can’t do capsules until six months out. So, have any of you tried the patches and had lab work done after? We’re the labs ok? If you haven’t done patches, have you tried the Tespo thing? Did that work for you? I’m just really trying to get my vitamins. I haven’t been able to keep any meat down 2 months after surgery, but I love the isopure protein powder. Guess I’m going vegetarian. :) Anyway, I found a way around the protein issue, so now I’m looking for a solution to the vitamin issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. 20. I completely agree with @jess9395. There is more than one way to "skin a cat". Your food plan should be catered to you individual makeup and lifestyle. I know some people who can eat soft boiled eggs on day 3. Why not? It's Protein and healthy fat. I am a vegetarian with severe food allergies. My eating plan is very different than most of the folks on these forums. Because my diet is plant based my carb intake is higher than most. Guess what? I have been able to lose steadily with no problems. In short cookie cutter treatments don't work because we are individuals, not clones. You should be having ongoing conversations with the medical team you chose to care for your unique needs.

    no more meat...

Hi Jodi - I don't eat pork, red meat or poultry - just seafood and vegetarian Protein. Here is the link to my blog: http://violinistwithaband.blogspot.com/ If you look on the left hand side underneath the "Followers" there is a list of recipes that I've posted. There are recipes for salmon, walleye, shrimp, cod, crab cakes (2 different types), and cioppino (there are a bunch of other recipes, but those are the seafood ones). I have tons of seafood recipes that I haven't posted also, so if you're looking for something specific, just let me know
  22. I felt the same way. I tried so many other programs and diets, including organic/vegetarian as well. At the end of the day, I didn't stick to it and went back to old behaviors. I had my sleeve surgery done pretty recently and have no regrets. The weight will come off. I honestly don't feel hunger, sometimes in my head but it doesn't really matter because I can't really eat anyway. So, to answer your question, it works. However, my understanding is that you do have to adjust your lifestyle and make some lifelong decisions about nutrition and exercise in order to maintain the loss. I've seen others post here that they gained their weight back but I've also seen so many more success stories. One of my main concerns was addiction transfer. I made a conscious decision that after the surgery, alcohol would no longer be consumed by me. I haven't ever really been into booze beforehand but know that many patients do turn to alcohol and I don't want to be one of them. I also spent over 6 months in counseling to make sure I knew what I was in for mentally and had an established relationship with someone for after the surgery as well. Hope that helps!!

    How often do you PB?

Thank you for explaining that to me. I feel stupid. I have not had any PB's yet, but I am only seven weeks in. I think I am paranoid and still kinda stay on foods that can be mushed up with a fork and foods that don't clump up. I'm sure my day is coming because I have only had one fill (1.2cc) and don't have a lot of restriction yet. My husband says I am turning into a health freak, but he kinda likes it because it makes him eat better too. I really stay on vegetables most of the time because they go down easily. I have also started experimenting with a totally organic diet, however, that is not the easiest thing to do because I live in a small town and organic items are hard to come by. I have to grocery shop about 30 miles away for my organic things. I started using organic because I am prone to miagraines and processed foods have preservitives and additives that are major miagraine triggers for me. After being banded and trying to stick to a semi-vegetarian/organic diet I haven't had a single miagraine. I am so glad I have been able to treat my headaches with a diet change. I had tried it before, but not to this extent.
  24. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one! I think the the most wasteful transition was from Paleo to vegetarian. Can you imagine?

    Any vegetarian sleevers?

I'm a vegetarian 4 weeks postop. I was told to watch quinoa because it swells in the tummy taking up more space. I am still on purees so I mix goat cheese, cottage cheese, silken tofu, yogurt or protein powders into my soups. Next week I get eggs so that will certainly boost protein. Its not impossible especially if you continue at least one shake a day.
