    Hi Everyone from MA

Congrats - your journey is just beginning.....ricotta - for now just put some good marinara on top of a layer of ricotta and microwave to heat and it is yummy.... later on when you add in meat you can put some frozen soy crumbles (in the freezer section by the vegetarian burgers etc) under the cheese and you have a great fake protein rich lasagna. This is a comfort food and you will love it. And I think Suzanne Somers or South Beach make some kind of dessert with ricotta.... I 'll have to explore that. Well take it slow with adding in the real food and keep the proteins #1. We'll be cheering you on! Sue PS - I love ricotta  - cottage cheese is :cursing: YUK

    Dr.Kuri in mexico?

Honestly at 53 years old *(when people say they "can't" lose any more) I can lose just find. I can't keep it off. So since all the band does is restrict what you can eat....if you can't lose by lowering your calories (like WW or the vegetarian diet) then the band won't help you anyway! I probably sound judgmental and I'm not; what I am is worried.

    Dr.Kuri in mexico?

RestlessMonkey, trust me, i have tried, i was actually vegetarian and dieting for 3 weeks and honestly i know it sounds like i don't have enough willpower but as much as i try to diet, the pounds never come off, which (as you should know, im sure this has happened to you too) discourages me and i end up quitting and not even thinking about it then regretting it later. I really think i need this tool especially hearing all the hype about it.

    July Butterflies Master Thread

Yea I had my first fill a week ago and I'm feeling no restriction. But I am losing weight-fast enough that my doc prescribed preventative gall stone meds to me! Anyone else on these? Anyway- It's definitely been frustrating not having the restriction that I desire with my band, but I have another fill September 25, so we'll see! I've been working out every day (I swim laps during my lunch break) and staying active and outside on the weekends. Trying to soak in the sun before it goes away all too soon :w00t: It's been a great learning process, and even though I can eat a lot more than I thought- I'm trying my best not to. I just keep hearing this voice that says "don't blow this!" and it makes it easier for me to stick with the healthier foods. Have you guys tried quiche? It's a very soft/mushie friendly food and I've been loving it for lunch and dinner: 6 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1 cup cheese salt and pepper dash of nutmeg 1 can of spinach bake on 375 for 35 mins! it's super easy and VERY yummy. Good way to get in protein AND veggies :biggrin2: Also, I had the morningstar farm chicken nuggets. They are vegetarian, but lots of protein and a very healthy alternative to real chicken nuggets! Anyway- hope this helps. I love sharing recipes and stories. You guys are the best :biggrin2:
  7. Dear Dicev Thanks for your well-informed reply. Yes, i must focus on the downsides of both procedures. I too am afraid of the dumping syndrome etc of the R en Y procedure - and as i am a vegetarian an afraid of not being able to get in enough protein with the intestinal bypass. How long since you had your operation? Any problems with your gall bladder as this seems to be a common side-effect?
  8. I'm still eating my oats too! I've been following a modified vegetarian diet lately. I'm going to go on the 21 day Detox diet that Oprah went on. It's 100% Vegan and you're supposed to lose 7lbs a week. The calories are 1200-1600 a day. Lower version fat, good carbs and adequate protein (60grams) - I love those soy products and currently I'm eating lots of fruits and veggies! So this shouldn't be difficult! But first on Sept 1st, I'm doing a research project for Dr. Kuri's Lap Band Coordinator - she's studying the weight loss results with the different Liver Shrinking Diets. I'm going to follow Dr. K's LSD for 14 days. After that, I'll do the 21 day Detox! I hope I lose weight! I've got to get this poundage off!!!

True? Divorce after WLS within 3 years? Why?

Manatee, I'll have to read your site when I get home can't do it here at work (work has it blocked) but it sounds VERY interesting. DH & I have friends who were business owners, alcoholics & out of shape (suppose that would be a given with the alcohol). They both went through AA & saved their marriage. Couple of years later she found out she had breast cancer & so decided to change her way of living to save her life by becoming at first a vegetarian & then later a vegan. She lost 20 pounds & now plays soccer 4x a week +, sometimes several times a day. She's in great shape. For years her husband, tho, didn't go along with her eating program. I started to wonder if their differences in lifestyles was going to cause problems. Slowly he came around, started to adapt a vegetarian way of eating & is now much thinner & playing soccer too. The kicker is through all of this they are still together & by all appearances, happy SO why is this relevant to my question? IMO we, as individuals in a marriage, still need to make decisions for ourselves for our own growth no matter that we are married. Sometimes our decisions have a negative effect on our marriages. Our friends priority was their relationship. They tell us that if they hadn't gone through AA they wouldn't be together. But they were able to stay together even tho they were on their own paths of growth.
  10. Hi All, I haven't been to the board in a couple of weeks because much has happened. On August 2nd my mom passed away and I'm still having a hard time with it. She has been ill for quite a while with COPD/Emphysema, but she was my best friend and I have no idea how I am going to get on without her. I am saddened because I wanted to have this done and to have lost a lot of weight before anything happened to her. I do have some good news I think, though. I am going in for my H&P consultation with the surgeon on the 22nd. I am supposed to go for the psych evaluation and the nutrition consultation on the 26th, but I don't know if I am going to be able to go to that one because I don't have the money up front to pay for that. I find myself getting the jitters here and there, but I know I have to do this to keep myself on track with any type of diet. I have also become a vegetarian and it's been 33 days since I have eaten any meat and don't miss it. I am worried I am not getting enough Protein though. Anyway, I'm sorry for rambling and I've missed you all. I'm just looking forward to getting everything done.

Off to a good start! Banded 8/11/08

FYI - GNC now has some soy protein shakes as well as the whey protein. They have about 25 grams of soy protein per 8 oz. shake. Just thought I would let you know since you are a vegetarian. It may be a healthy option for you.
  12. I did well throughout my hospital stay and am feeling better each day. I'm grateful I've had some help w/ my kid because I can't do much right now, and that needs to be honored!!!! Clear liquids were a bit difficult for me because I am vegetarian, so I made some miso broth, that was OK and Water for 2 days, on day 4 I started to drink warm milk, good quality organinc 1% and it feels very healing, also taking spirulina suppliments that have green protien. Feels good. I am looking forward to trying a creamy Soup, but not quite yet. I have had some emotional surges, but am feeling positive. Thanks for reading!

I need to figure out how to change my avatar with a picture. I LOVED the Flounder in the beginning but would now like a pic of me I think and then I can take it off my signature. As for changing my font and size, usually I just do the "quick reply" at the bottom of the screen so I rarely go into the screen where you can change those things. So I guess I can't really help there. Okay, yesterday I think I talked to you all about trying to figure out a menu for this workshop that I'm "in charge" of. Well I sent a sample menu to my director and he said I need to think of vegetarians and people who can't eat pork for religious reasons. So I'm going to ask for suggestions, my brain power is out. A couple of considerations....they have hired a couple of lunch ladies who are used to cooking for kids and really like "institutional" type foods. Second, the director would like to eat better than mac and cheese and lunch meat, but we are on a budget...not really tight, but not unlimited....I need 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 suppers. My original meals were: Breakfast 1: egg bake, some sort of quik bread, melon and berries breakfast 2: french toast, bacon and sausage, and melon Lunch 1: Chicken or tuna salad croissants, asian cabbage crunch salad, baked apples slices. Lunch 2: Left over meats from both dinners on hard rolls, soup or chili, leftover stuff from the other two days (this is our final meal so I was trying to do leftovers without them being "left overs" Dinner 1 (first meal): Pork loin roast, smashed garlic red potatoes, roasted green beans, and cobbler Dinner 2: Baked ham, sweet potato casserole, corn, creamed cucumbers, angel food cake with strawberries and whip cream. snack options: chips and salsa, veggie tray with dips, fresh apples, oranges, and bananas. So I would love any input you all could give me. Any ideas that I don't have to give too much direction for. I want to have a nice menu but nothing outrageous. I hope that makes sense. I also want to have some low cal band friendly options so I can eat too. This summer I really struggled. Any ideas would help. Thanks all.

    Vegetarian

Hey!! I'm planning on getting the band in the next 8 months or so.. I'm "somewhat" of a vegetarian. I only eat chicken that is boneless and skinless. Other then that I don't eat any other meat including any fish. I'm a very very picky eater. I plan on making sure I do get my Protein in post lap band surgery though.. good luck:rolleyes::biggrin:

    Shoe Size Disappointment

My daughter is six feet and wears a 12, be glad you aren't a 12 as that's a whole new ballgame. Special order, plus she's a partial vegetarian and will not wear leather, it's not a fun day in shoe shop world! All I know is that I was a size 8 1/2 before children and supposedly you can go up a size with each child, I'm a 10 now and it's definitely the length of the foot as my width has not changed but I'm a barefoot person so they do tend to spread from what I hear. Nancy:smile:

  18. i chose Other ~ please explain. After I'm banded in October, I'm planning on returning to a vegetarian diet. I only have to do Optifast for 2 weeks before surgery, so I don't have to think about things before then. I'm waiting til after, so I know the amount I eat will be controlled and all I need to think about is what I eat. I also prefer low carb, but couldn't have 2 choices.
  19. Nanook

    Why did you choose RNY?

I saw your other note about the book, all I can say is "good luck!", lol. You know that's something that was brought up by her on-call surgeon and I suppose that may have contributed to it or it's the circle thing where you have a hard time getting stuff down and eat the softer stuff, so I'm not totally positive if we can find out the exact reasoning behind it. I posted it on the forum you are on to see how common it was. She's a partial vegetarian but has started eating fish/seafood and that's pretty soft too. So she doesn't eat any red meat or poultry. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? She was never a big Protein drink person though and really needs to supplement more. Who knows, I do know that I could tell a long time ago that things were not just right, mother's instinct, but convincing doctors/PA to do something is a whole other ballgame sometimes. Same surgeon team but felt like was being blown off at times. Up to last week she was eating cooked veggies and baked fish or tuna from the pouch but has always had a hard time with her supplements and meds. Since I have the lap band it's sometimes hard to relate as it's almost night and day when it comes to a lot of our issues. I was concerned because the doctor's office would say she's doing well because she'd lost so much weight but I was like, "hey, she's really not thriving like she should be" you know and they weren't getting it. The last time I spoke to the surgeon at the hospital yesterday he even said that her weight loss was too fast for her, she's six feet tall and started at almost 360 lbs and is under 260 lbs and her surgery was 5/27. She can start soft foods again tomorrow and hopefully build up to solids again but I feel better knowing they're going to do another endoscopy just to be on the safe side to stretch the opening even though they are not fun as you are awake! Anyway thanks and I'm glad things are going well for you and I do think you're right about getting in the solids that may have kept you from having this problem. I have to go to your forum when I have issues with her and everyone is so nice and helpful. I wish you the best and good health take care, Nancy.:tt2:

    Vegetarian

After my surgery I plan on returning to a vegetarian diet. I wanted to hear from anyone out there who is a vegetarian or changed to being a vegetarian/vegan after the op. I'm interested in how legumes and pulses go, passing through the band, if anyone's had any problems with it. Thanks. Michelle
  21. Hey all. I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Kolman. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina and I'm 24 years old. I'm 5'3'' and 235lbs. I've struggled with weight loss for a short time, but I feel like I can't do anything. I've done gym memberships and went to the gym at least 6 days a week. I didn't lose much weight at all. I lost maybe 10 pounds and never went below that. I'm a vegetarian and so my eating habbits are very selective but I tried to make them healthy. I even tried the Alli pill but that didn't do much even when I stuck to the plan. I feel helpless and I don't know what else to do. I honestly think that this may be the key. I know that with the Realize Band Surgery that there are going to be risks and downsides, but I'm willing to take the chance. I know that I'm going to not only change my eating style dramatically but work out a lot more as well. I went on the REALIZeBand.com website and I do qualify for the surgery. I plan on attending the seminar in September with my husband. I just hope that my health insurance can cover most if not all of it. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I'll keep you posted on what I do.
  22. I am eating my lunch right now and having a DEEEEEE-Licious one. It is an Amy's brand entree called the Sante Fe Enchilada Bowl. It is packed with goodness and real ingredients. 350 calories. 16 grams of Protein. 9 grams of Fiber. 11g of fat, 2 which are saturated. 10% of Calcium, 40% of Vitamin C, 20% of Iron. You can find it in the healthy food/ vegetarian option frozen section of the super market. I have had it two days in a row. YUUUUUUUUUM! ********************* Also (and I can believe I saying this) but cottage cheese done the right way is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. 1/2 cup with 1 equal packet and cut up peach slices (sugar free of course). Such a nice snack. **************************** So what good finds can everyone recommend? Do share! recipes are great also.

  24. Hi there. I've been thinking about WLS for almost 3 years and have been waiting for surgery since January, now that it is 6 days away I am feeling a bit nervous! I am excited and a little scared. My biggest worry is how I am going to deal with cravings. I have lost 30lbs since January while waiting for surgery, I yo-yo like crazy between about 6 lbs up and down. My eating is most difficult around my monthly cycle when I crave the junk. I am also a vegetarian and have been for almost 20 years. i am curious if it will be difficult to get the Protein without the bulk. I am also a single working parent of a 7 year old and do not have a ton of support, I have 1 good friend and a babysitter. I've taken 2 weeks from work off, and hope to decrease some of the load by December. Anyway, I want to say hello and will need some support from ya'll Cheers!:cool2:
  25. Hello ladies - this is so great to have a forum for different age groups! I am being banded on August 15th - can't wait! but am getting nervous thinking of all the changes.Anyway, I was told to go on optifast and veggie diet for 2 weeks before surgery. I started friday and was successful so far until today. I was out shopping longer than I thought I would be and ended up eating some vegetable sushi from the grocery store. I didn't have any sauce on it. I know I should have brought veggies with me - have I really wrecked my pre-op diet? Also I went to ticker factory and designed one but how do I get it to here?
