  1. ok, so i'm going the spilt the difference between your starting weight and your 3 month weight to determine your 1 month weight, cuz putting a zero will kinda skew the results.... EDIT...actually, now that i think of it, i think i'll leave your 1 month weight loss at zero and determine the +/- standard deviation error bars later after i arrive at a total sample number....

    Question about (very) small regain

    I usually have a +/-3 lb range unless I eat pickles lol. I love pickles but whenever I eat them, I always gain 5lbs temporarily. Not sure why because I do eat other salty foods but pickles really do the Water gain job on me. I looked it up a week or so ago, and it said that the average typical and normal weight fluctuation in a adult is 4 to 6 lbs a day. Unfortunately for me, I have to be hyper vigilant because of my history, so if I hit 3 or 4 lbs over my normal stable weight, and if it doesn't drop in a day or two, I cut calories for a few days just in case.

    Lap Band: Am I Crazy to Consider It?

    I'm so sorry you had to go through such a harrowing experience with your sister. Experiences like these can shape our decisions, and I can understand your concerns. I personally lived with the lap band for 15 years. Over the years, it slipped twice, eventually eroded, and had to be removed. While it did help me maintain my weight, it was uncomfortable and caused other health issues, and in hindsight, it's not something I would recommend given my experience. That being said, it's clear you're considering the lap band due to your specific circumstances and past experiences. If you're set on going forward with the band, you might want to wait a little longer for a new option on the horizon. ReShape has recently submitted a Premarket Approval (PMA) to the FDA for a next-generation lap band, known as Lap Band 2.0. I saw it firsthand at ASMBS in Las Vegas recently, and it addresses some of the issues associated with the original band. Wishing you all the best in your journey.

    So sorry for the loss of your sister & I understand why this would be influencing your considering lap band. There are reasons why so few surgeons do lap bands anymore even with the supposed advances. All surgeries have risks & potential for post surgical complications. Weight loss surgery risks & complications though are quite low in comparison to many other commonly done surgeries.(I remember reading the appendectomies stats are higher.) Ask your surgeon for the stats & experiences with their patients across all weight loss surgeries. . Bypass might be an option as @Jeanniebug said it is possible to reverse. Like sleeve, the average weight loss with bypass is about 65% of the weight you have to lose. It’s only 50% with lap band. (Remember averages only give you an idea. Some lose more while others less as many factors influence your loss.) But you have to do what is most right for you. All the best whatever you decide.

    Just noticed I said I gained 3 lbs it was about 3-5lbs (depending on the maths with my fluctuation 😉). I sometimes can’t eat a full meal either which is why I also snack a few times a day - to get those calories in. I’m pretty controlling as to what, how much & when I eat my snacks & each has a purpose: adding extra protein & nutrients. My favourite snack at the moment is home made labneh on multigrain crackers with tomato, fresh basil & a sprinkle of zaatar - yum. I call them my midday snack but I eat them at 1pm with a large mug of green tea (it’s the only time I can eat & drink at the same time 🤷🏻‍♀️). I also have things like nuts, fruit, protein bar, jerky, string cheese, occasionally roasted fava beans or chickpeas (easy if travelling). Slider foods are the devil’s work. Far too moreish & easy to eat too much. Rice crackers were my weakness. I still keep them in my house (with hummus) but for friends or family which is only when I’ll have some now. I have thrown out a couple of pots on unopened or barely touched expired hummus though. Sometimes being stubborn & pig heatedly determined can have its benefits. 😁

    Long Distance Hiking/vigorous exercise after surgery

    I used to run 8 miles straight in the military and for fun. Im hoping to be able to run that Marathon one day. I used to love running so much. Once I got up over 240 pounds I started only using the elliptical or doing something lower impact for my knees. Hope this surgery gets me down to my goal weight...I used to love running long distance.

  10. There are still a few surgeons in the midwest that do lap band surgery. They say there has been great advancements and improvements. I am considering this less favored option because I supported my sister through an agonizing DS that slowly tortured her for 5 years until she passed shortly after a 2nd correction attempt. Countless doctors and nurses over the years looking after her in ICU said they wished they would stop doing GS and DS because there is not much that can be done when things go wrong. So the band is the only option I will consider. I am post menopausal and since starting sleep apnea treatment, I've gained even more weight and have a current bmi of 35. With diet and exercise I plateau and cant seem to lose more than 30 lbs. While there seems to limited weight loss as well as frequent complications with the Band, at least they seem to be correctable. Does anyone have any words of wisdom as I consider this?

    Hey y'all! My VSG is scheduled for 7/17/23. I am super excited! I had a very toxic relationship with diets in particular. I was always "chunky" as a child. Buying pants was a struggle. The weight sat okay on me, but Definity not in the right places. I recall, in middle school - being part of a dance recital and having to buy an adult small dress, to fit my shape. Since then I've been bombarded with "shut/zip your mouth" - diet mentality. When I reached 200lb as an adult, I was mortified, but it did not affect my daily living. Then the pandemic hit; suddenly it was 230, 250, then 270. At my highest I was 295lb. I used to love walking, being active, dragging my friends out to do fun things. Now it almost feels like moving from room to room is a chore. My mind is right and set on the ultimate goal. My therapist and I worked tirelessly for years to get to the bottom of the mental issues that causes me to go to food for comfort. I am ready to flip my world upside down, to START LIVING AGAIN ❤️

    WLS in 2015 - I have a 5 lbs window and if above for very long I address by reducing the snacks and carbs I check water and protein. It is lifelong for me. I have regained up to 5 lbs from my window but back to post op life - about 6 months out diet. There is no easy way for me but I live a full life. I have been at my current weight since 2019 Best.

    Hi, @Ct06033! I think this is a good question to consider. Like others have said, the new medicine hasn't been tested for long term effects. What IS known about it is that as soon as you stop, you gain the weight back. So you're going to need injections for the rest of your life. That is a big nope for me. I'd rather have surgery and not depend on a medicine. Especially because I hear there have been shortages, which could happen again in our pandemic-prone world. Also, the medicine will be WAY more expensive. Out of pocket, it costs like $1000 a month. In just a year you'll be paying more than twice as much for the medicine as the surgery, and you'll have to keep paying, versus the one and done surgery payment. Those are my thoughts.

    I get it. I too had about a 3lb gain after being stable for a year or so. Yes a small gain but just like you it was concerning to me. My fluctuation had been 48.5-49.5kg but suddenly I was 51kg. I liked being under 50kg & I too worried it was the beginning of the end. I am a believer in your body settling into it’s correct set point & what it needs to function effectively which may be at a higher weight. Building muscle will result in some gain. Becoming more complacent & less vigilant in your choices, making adjustments to your way of eating to better suit your lifestyle, medication changes, or your original way of eating was too limiting all can contribute to weight gain. For me, I discovered a contributing factor was my HRT was no longer working (absorption issue after my gall removal. I also had increased my protein intake due to the same absorption problem. Changed to a patch, made a slight adjustment to the protein sources I’d added (legumes be gone - well reduced) & slowly I lost not all but most of that gain. I now fluctuate between 49.5-49.9kg & have been stable for about 6 months. Funny thing is I do eat more than I did at the lower weight (about 1300 then & about 1500 now) which, according to those BMR calculators, is about right for me. If you want to nip the regain in the bud, maybe start with tracking your food intake for a couple of weeks to see what may be contributing. 100 extra calories can result in a 10lb weight gain over a year. You mentioned you’ve been snacking more & that may be contributing. May be drop one or two of those snacks, reduce your snack portions or look for a lower calorie alternative. But only change those things that are sustainable & don’t affect how you want to enjoy your life. You have to decide if the changes you may need to make to your eating are worth weighing a little less or whether being a couple of pounds heavier is an acceptable increase. And what an acceptable fluctuation may be for you. Unfortunately, I think we will always have to be vigilant. We have too much history with eating & weight gain not to be. All the best.

I’ll convert metric to imperial for our non enlightened neighbours. 😉 Hopefully it will help people understand you can’t directly compare & it may reduce the anxiety & fear of failing some have to see the range & variety of results. But yes some do fixate on the numbers and don’t use them only as a general idea of what they might experience not will experience. It’s why I ended up giving my stats to that recent thread to show there was more than two stone difference in weight loss across us at the same time frame. F - 53 (2months off 54) - 5’3” 11lbs 189lbs 171lbs 153lbs 132lbs 111lbs I’ll add stabilised at 108lbs at 17 months & 109 at 4 yrs out.

    Hi everyone I am new here, my first post. I am having the sleeve on july 12th, i am nervous and excited, my weight has been holding me back, looking forward to travelling again and being able to walk for extended periods, also worried about not being prepared.
  23. there shouldn't be a need to re-do the sleeve - it's already been done. The sleeve historically was part 1 of the DS procedure, which used to often be done in two stages. They'd first create a sleeved stomach, and a few months later, they'd come back in and bypass most of the small intestine. Some people lost enough weight with just part 1 that they didn't end up doing part 2. Thus, the sleeve surgery was born.

No, I didn't think it was a magic solution and I entirely know it is a tool, but at the same time - bariatric surgery has been criticized by many for the supposed rapid weight that occurs that isn't normal, which is one of the reasons why people have a whole set of new problems with hanging skin. The body can't bounce back that fast. I think there has been some "marketing" in this industry that have contributed to the expectations that some may have too - especially with before and after photos of people who may be the exception to the rule. Like I said, I don't regret the surgery at all and I am never going back, but I expected more of a woosh of weight loss at least initially.
