Cold since surgery - is this normal?

I have seen this issue brought up here. Seems many of us are colder at a lower calorie intake and or lower weight. Enjoy summer! Fall is approaching, and I have heating pads in several spots at my house and an electric blanket just for the foot of my bed!! (My feet seem to be the coldest part of me.... )I have resorted to running a hair dryer into my boots to heat things up! Best of luck! Sad to say that even a small weight gain made me warmer Sigh

    Marriage After Being Sleeved.....

Wheetsin I listed the most frequent comment he makes which is "you are gonna change" referring to me wanting another man. Let me tell you my husband is an extremely macho man who shows very little to no emotion. I have had some major insecurity and trust issues in my marriage, stemming from weight gain (approx. 100 lbs over the last 10 yrs). I have experienced my weight affecting our intimacy, not to mention we have four small kids which is a whole other battle in itself. Along with our intimacy being affected I have felt at times his attention has been elsewhere, you know how women have that gut feeling but no proof but you know deep down in your heart of hearts.... I am deciding to take back over the reigns of my life, health and marriage. I felt like big or small he was supposed to be ok with it, but now I know that's selfish. What's the saying, "the same things you did to get em' you gotta do to keep em'. So I guess I did leave some essentials out.
  4. I have not been sleeved yet, but my pre-op appt. is October 4th. Here is a list of questions I have compiled so far that I am interested in: Gas after surgery: Some people complain a lot about this. Does this have to do with the person or the surgeon's technique? What can I expect after surgery? Do you make everyone's stomach the same size or is it based on the size of my original stomach? Is there anything you might find during surgery that would cause me to wake up and not be sleeved? Straws: What is your "policy" on straws? I have heard different things online. Can you explain the theroy behind not using a straw? Weight gain from/after surgery: Some people online report gaining weight after surgery. Is this normal? What causes it? and what can I expect? Fluid Vs Protein: I am worried about getting all my fluid in. I don't drink that much liquid now. What is most important fluid or Protein? Blood tests: What are you testing for and what might show up that would cause concern or to have to postpone the surgery? Thats all I have for now, but I may be adding some after I read the replies to this post Bonnie

    PCOS help?

All carbohydrates are not equal!!! Processed and refined carbs are the bad ones, Sugar, Flour etc. Un-processed or complex carbs are low GI and are digested slowly without triggering the glucose spike and excess un-usable glucose in the blood that is responsible for the weight gain associated with PCOS as well as the low energy levels. Carbohydrate is a very important part of any diet and should not be omitted. Reducing carbs too far will slow your metabolic rate futher. Good quality carbs are what you should be eating. Low GI is the way to go. Pick low GI carbs, good quality Protein and good fats. These are all important for gaining and maintaining good health. Stay away from the empty calories provided by junk food and drink. Keep taking Metformin, if you are on it, and slowly build up the exercise, one step at a time, and all should go well. ....that's my opinion and everyone is welcome to it...no charge.
  7. hi As a sleep tech I do have to let you know that using the CPAP will help in more ways than you realize. Using your CPAP will help you loose weight by letting you sleep correctly thus, allowing your body to heal itself and lower stress hormones that cause weight gain. These are just things that will help in the short term. Long term is so much more. I know it's hard to get used to, like anything thats good for us, you have to sacrifice. Most people that have problems with CPAP is because of a incorrect mask fit. Call your lab or Medical equipment company and see about different masks. If you have any questions feel free to ask. :huh2:

3 mo out, how is everyone?

Laphappy40, how can you be a failure when you are losing? Please don't be so hard on yourself. Failure would entail not having the surgery, not doing anything to stop the cycle of weight gain and yo-yo dieting. Just getting the band is a huge step towards victory. I am awaiting insurance approval and your weightloss along with everyone else's is a great inspiration to me! Keep your head up your headed towards the finish line. :clap2:
  9. I am on the PreOp diet and have gained weight. Before starting, I ate 2 meals a day, breakfast and lunch. Breakfast was a small low-fat yogurt, a little bit of low sugar granola and a banana or some other fruit. Lunch as usually out while at work. Normally places like Luby's, where I never get fried foods. Rarely ever did I get anything fried. I am a big salad lover with a vinegarette dressing. Now that I have been having a little breakfast (2 of what is on the allowed list), a sensible lunch (tilapia or some other sensible meat), and those 2 shakes (made with 8 oz of skim milk), I have gained 2 pounds. I am not eating sweets, I haven't been eating stuff that I shouldn't eat. What is going on? Any ideas?
  10. I know the feelings darr... it's more about the loss of control over eating than the weight gain. Though the weight gain COUNTS!:speechles I had 10 months of delays leading up to my surgery and my "goodbye to food tour" [TY doxie hahahaha] and gained 40 pounds!:faint:My doc made me lose that 40# BEFORE the surgery on the liquid diet... I dropped 54# pretty easily as it turned out once I had a DATE! So... don't worry about it, but worry a little hehehehe.:heh: You'll get there once you realize that they won't do the surgery unless you lose the weight. Good Luck!:whoo:
  11. Hi - I take Lamictal, and when I found out that my nurse wouldn't give it to me the night I was in the hospital I freaked out. My mom and husband tried to talk to her - it wasn't her, but my surgeon. I take Xanax as well as 2 antidepressants and 1 sleep med. Nurse asked for Ativan since it can be given IV. He came back and offered benadryl...... it was a bad situation - I don't say this to scare you, but to share so you can cross that bridge up front. The preoperative nurse said they'd have all my meds for me, so I thought I was fine. Please ask your team - it was a rough night, as I'm sure you can imagine. The good news!!!! I'm 4 days post op, can swallow meds (some have to be cut, and very very spaced out) and I think they fill my little stomach up as I'm struggling with protein/calories. But my mental health is fine, just the same as it was before surgery so don't worry. I also worked hard to be mentally stable, the meds are part of my weight gain, but I am good post op so wanted to share and reassure you. Please just ask about your overnight hospital stay ❤???? Sent from my SM-T550 using the BariatricPal App
  12. I'm curious as well to what your diet is like? How are your carbs? I try to keep them as low as possible and the Protein high. Don't regret your surgery. You did it for you. No matter what we, we are going to have to work hard to reach our goals. Weight gain could be anything, maybe your holding on to Water? Drinking enough water? Hang in there you will soon start dropping those pounds!

    Effect on families

I am sorry for your experience and how you feel this affected your family. That said... weight loss surgery did NOT cause any of this. Mental health problems and addiction were not because he had surgery. They would have reared their ugly head even if he didn't have surgery. He didn't do the work to get through the mental health issues that probably lead to the obesity and additions in the first place. He would have to WANT the health to deal with those mental health issues. He would have had to have a good team of docs to address his issues as a whole. To blame the surgery is just wrong. And why come on our site now... 13 years later... to tell people you hate the surgery? It is not helping those who are looking to make their decision. It would be much more effective to warm them to deal with their mental health issues that MAY have caused their weight problems in the first place. And BTW, I do NOT have an unhealthy relationship with food... other (medical) issues triggered my weight gain and other issues prevented me from losing the weight. and as a whole, the process of approving individuals for surgery and taking care of their physical and mental health needs have improved drastically over the last 13 years. For example... most of us have to have a complete psych eval to be even considered for surgery. Most of us have to see nutritionists regularly. And many of us are referred for mental health treatment. I hope he gets the help he needs, but again... it isn't the surgery that is to blame, and he has to WANT to get better before he will get better. That is how addition recovery works... with a lot of help from the mental health professionals.
  14. Hi, I’ve decided to start the process for bariatric surgery. I’m considering vsg. My insurance requires 6 months of weigh ins/dr visits. Although, if BMI is over 50, the six month waiting period is waived. My BMI is 48.5. If I gain 10 pounds, I will hit 50 BMI. The weight management bariatric clinic I was referred to is closed due to COVID 19. I can’t get an anyone to answer the phone. I have no dates set up yet for anything. I’m miserable due to recent and rapid weight gain. I would like to have the surgery done this year. I have already met my out of pocket spending with my insurance due to other issues, so the bariatric surgery will be covered if I have it this year. I’m well aware that I can put rocks in my pocket or ankle weights on my ankles to add more pounds to the scale. However, I am also aware that this is fraud. Should I focus on gaining the ten pounds and feeling worse? Or, should I focus on attempting to lose weight and doing six month weigh ins? Thus, putting me at surgery next year. Also, I had my thyroid removed last year and it’s almost impossible to lose weight. Either way, I’m in a no win situation. Looking for advice. Thank you!!
  15. I've ordered his book. I'm stopping the weight gain now and will reverse it by right eating. Its too easy to fall back into the bad eating habits and thinking. I guess for us it will be a never ending battle to eat right. I wonder how many other VSG's out there have had problems with gaining weight and how they reversed it or if they did. Good luck on your continued weight loss.
  16. If you don't currently use salt on your food you might try adding salt to your food. I prefer Morton's Lite Salt because it contains both sodium and potassium. I would contact the surgeons office and ask for a referral to an endocrinologist. It will be worth it to go to one they refer you to, even if it is a 5 hour drive. Steroids are really bad for causing weight gain, and they can have a permanent effect on your body. Even if you don't want to get a referral from your surgeon, I would at least see another endocrinologist and get a second opinion.
  17. 1. My sllep apnea 2. Elevated blood pressure 3. The shame of running into people i havent seen in years and wondering if they're shocked at my 50 - 100lbs weight gain since they last saw me 4. Spending $100 to $150 a week on fast food and sit down restaurants 5. Always being the fattest one in my team photo (each year our P takes a picture of each grade level team and hangs it in the front office so the parents can k iw what their child's teacher looks like. I hate how big i always look compared to my sz 1, sz 8 and sz 12 teammates) 6. Having to teach most of my lessons sitting down because standing for more than 10 minutes straight hurts my knees and feet 7. Constantly wondering/tninking about my next meal 8. Looking forward to times when my husband is coming home late from work so i can sneak and eat an entire McDonald's meal before he gets home, then ride out to Chipotle with him again and eating half a burrito bowl 9. Weighing more than my father, brother and male cousins (and they are by no means super thin guys, but average size and height) 10. The sense of utter failure and defeat because i can't control what i eatlike a normal person.

    Anyone on thyroid meds

I'm hoping everyone who reads this thread is clear - hypothyroidism makes it difficult to lose weight. ALL the medications for hypothyroidism make it easier to lose weight than not being medicated. Your medication may not fully address your hypothyroidism - so you may still find it harder to lose weight than before you needed the medication, but the medication itself is NOT making it harder to lose weight. Many doctors seem hell bent on giving their patients the minimum medication they can get away with, partly because low-level hypothyroidism symptoms are "vague" and partly because there are other health consequences to too much thyroid medication - like heart palpitations and osteoporosis. Lowering your medication without reference to current blood test results showing how well your thyroid is functioning is likely to lead to weight gain, not loss. Some of the responses in this thread sound like a few of us are convinced the medication itself causes weight gain.
  19. I asked myself that same question. So last year, I decided to give it my all, I was strick low carb, didn't cheat for 200 days, lost about 40 lbs. I was down to 190 lbs. Not at goal, but at least feeling better and thinking - I will do better without the lap-band. I can do this! Then July came and we went on our family vacation. I have a motto, vacation is meant to enjoy, so I enjoy everything. If I want dessert, I get it. I don't diet on vacation - ever. Well, vacation ended and back home we came, gaining 8 lbs in a week from the vacation, I said "tomorrow, I'll get back on my diet". Guess what, tomorrow never came, By November I was up to 248 lbs. I realized, I can diet, I am successful at losing weight, however, I'M A FAILURE at keeping it off. I was depressed, sad, and embarrassed at my massive weight gain from July to November - I had packed on 58 lbs in 4 months! I know my co-workers were talking behind my back, I know my family was concerned for me. My DH expressed his concern as well. Thats when I realized I needed help, serious help. I once again looked at the lap band. I started the process 11/22 and had my surgery on 1/18/07. I know I"m only a month out, but I tell you, I believe it is the best decision I have ever made. I no longer fear going on vacation. I know that I can enjoy what I want to, however, my tool (the band) will keep me from gorging uncontrollable. I feel safe now with my tool. I know that I wil NEVER be 248 lbs again. I am not trying to talk you into getting the band, I'm just sharring my thoughts. Only you know yourself, only you know if you can lose the weight on your on and keep it off. Whatever you decide, it sounds like your co-workers are a great support for you and care about you very much. I wish you the best!

    Sleep apnea?

I really hope my sleep apnea goes away! I have had terrible sleep quality for friggin ever, and while the CPAP helps me sleep better, it still interrupts my sleep and doesn't get me to 100%. Plus, I hate not being able to fall asleep anywhere but in my bed (and taking it on travel... ugh, takes up so much room!) What I was wondering is did anyone have to have CPAP adjustments while actively losing because their CPAP pressure was now too strong? I just had to have my CPAP pressure upped after a few years and about 35 lbs weight gain, so I am wondering if after losing that weight if I'll need to drop it back down again. Luckily, I was right there when they adjusted it in the office so I know I can do it at home (no special anything required other than knowing what buttons to press.) Just wondering what experiences everyone has had, and if there are any helpful clues or signs that your pressure is too high.

    April 2006 Bandits November Challenge

Attagirl! Here are some dancing bananas to bolster the spirit of the "attagirl." :) I hear you, Kat. food is a big part of the holidays and I don't plan to forego any part of it. It's not Christmas without my grandmother's fruitcake Cookies. She's no longer with us, but I made them with her every year. Last year my Mom made them for me and I cried. My Mom cooks solely by saying "waiter, please bring me the..." so the fact that she remembered to make them (and successfully executed them) makes me well up just sitting here! Anyway, I don't think any of us think differently than you. The holidays aren't about counting every calorie. They're about friends and family, food and warmth. With the band, that will mean that we will forego the 10+ lb weight gain that usually accompanies the season. All that said, in December I will commit to (1) exercising as much or more as I do in any other month, (2) drinking my Water every day and (3) not going to holiday parties/events hungry. If I eat a well balanced bandster meal ahead of time, how much damage can I do, you know? Food and weight has dominated too many holiday seasons for me. In past years, I've been worried about going home -- worried about what my family will say or think about my weight gain. Worried about keeping them entertained at every minute with witty conversation to distract them from my physical challenges. The holidays will be much nicer this year. Much more about what they're supposed to be about. Boo, my hair quit falling out about 6 weeks ago. I can't tell that it's coming back in yet, but it's definitely back to falling out at only a normal pace. It was scary there for a while, but I promise it does stop!

    Help please!

I suppose it's a matter of motivation. No, when it came to my pre and postop diet instructions, I did not mess up. (And this involved over a month of full liquids and 2 months before eating something like chicken) My health and proper healing were too important to me. Once you get farther out, bad choices simply result in no weight loss or weight gain, but this early on bad choices can result in very serious consequences. You can do a search for "cheat" to find many others that chose not to follow instructions. But then check out the complications subforum to help motivate yourself not to do it again.

    Smoking

Just the place I was looking for! I just quit smoking after being a pack a day smoker for 6 years. It isn't and wasn't easy but in order to better my life with WLS I had too show myself i could Do it and I'm surprised I actually did it, I never would have imagined me to stop. My problem now is the 5 lb weight gain! I really didn't think I was eating to substitute the smoking
  25. Well I'm 28 weeks now and am up to 135.5 lbs so getting close to 20lbs I've gained. I find I reach for Soups and yogurts and things that go down easily. I can eat an english muffin in the am with a HOT coffee and its fine. Anything really hot helps me get my foods down easily. If I try to take a few sips of Water that is cold I will throw that up. My OB thinks by 39 weeks when they plan to induce me I should be around the 145-150 mark so 35lb weight gain in total. I have a HUGE love affair with sweets that's def not helping me along with the weight gain....lol....Get's even worse when I'm breastfeeding...... Fritzy1980.......Do find you have restriction at all? Are there any foods you can't get down?
