    Vegetarians(or Vegans!)

I'm a pescatarian, but mostly eat vegetarian. Some of my veggie go-tos are (I eat far too much cheese, which may not work for you with the autoimmune - not sure): greek yogurt Quark (its a cheese that is yogurt consistency - but thinner than greek yogurt) I almost always have quark with frozen blueberries for breakfast - by the time i get to work, the bb are still a little frozen, but not hard) cottage cheese (there is one that is higher protein) My favorite lunch is ricotta bake (google "Eggface ricotta bake") - I always add some sauteed spinach. I make a double batch and cook them in a mini loaf pan (makes 8 mini loaves) - freeze half of them. beans/lentils (although not a lot of protein here) tofu - I either buy extra firm, drain it, and bake it or buy the baked tofu from places like trader joe's eggs - mostly scrambled Veggie sausage (I like morninstar farms) egg salad (2 eggs, 1 TBL greek yog, 1 TBL may) Veggie burgers (look at the protein content, some are low protein/high carb) Snacks almonds Sargento nut snack packs cheese fairlife milk

I'm not a vegetarian but I do have some meatless ideas for you. I enjoy a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese. I find Oikos Triple Zero gives you the best high protein/high fiber/low sugar option. My favorite way to prepare cottage cheese is with toasted walnuts and a drizzle of honey. For meals I have a fiesta black bean quinoa salad that my husband and I just love. (I'll post a link for the recipe) I also like to make wraps with hummus and black beans, spinach leaves and red pepper slices. Egg salad would also be a good idea especially if you are still early in pureed/soft stages. So would lentil soup. https://www.crunchycreamysweet.com/roasted-sweet-potato-black-bean-quinoa-salad-recipe/ https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/lemony-lentil-soup/

    Vegetarians(or Vegans!)

If you don't have a problem with soy...tofu, very high protein replacement that is versatile, my favorite is super firm. Otherwise hemp and pea powders for shakes. I'm no longer a strict vegetarian, I'm a flexitarian these days because it became too rigourous trying to stay in weightloss mode while eating (higher carb) replacements so I decided to continue my usual ovo lacto pescaterian diet and allow poultry when the occasion called for it (no other available foods) Good Luck 💜
  4. What are your favorite meals? My dietitian is woefully underinformed about meat replacements, which I find surprising. I'm a vegetarian because I've found through elimination that it helps my autoimmune disorder, and also because I feel good about it! Just looking for some quick, high protein low carb, ideas. 5. I am 14 months post op from a gastric bypass and I have only lost 72lbs!!! I have been at this weight about 6 months post op. I am in the gym 3-4 times a week since April. Lifting weights. And doing cardio. I am a vegan/vegetarian. I have lost inches, but not in numbers. I am all out of ideas on what to do to get me to lose some weight. I am now struggling with my nutrition intake from dieting so I have to basically up my calorie/protein intake. Has anyone else experienced this. Or is it just me 😔😔😔😒😒😒
  6. Thank you for your responses. I am in a kind of holding pattern. My doctor seems I should wait another two months to recheck the pelvic mass. I’d rather not. I at least wanted a clearer idea what it could be. Clarification. No one said it was just a cyst. It seems big enough to question it at the least. But that’s separate from my RNY. I have not heard from my surgeon about the upper gi fluoroscopy. My endoscopy isn’t until July 11th. I like at least knowing what I’m going into with the endoscopy. Some part of me just doesn’t want to do it. i think the 26th I’m supposed to progress to the next phase. But I know it won’t happen. I’m trying to take it in stride and make sure to get 50 grams of protein. It’s hard to get water without pain. Let alone enough. I’m taking vitamins (I bought mostly Whole food gummies) all the physical things aside. It kind of hurts that I had to go this far just to lose weight. I fought so hard to lose weight before and didn’t think I ate unhealthy at all. Low carb, low calories, etc. it’s hard when simple carbs are easier to stomach when you feel sick. But I looked for low carb alternatives. I didn’t give in for so many years to my sugar addiction or cravings for things like fried chicken. I followed strict low carb. It wasn’t until my weight jumped literally 30lbs out of nowhere that I loosened up on the carbs. My worst cheat most times was sweet kale salad with gardein crab less crab cakes or tuna salad. I’d make low carb grilled cheese sandwich or low carb pizza. But not very often. I ate cauliflower mash, cauliflower rice, shiritaki rice, and mostly vegetarian foods occasionally meat , and more veggies. I mean how can veggies make me fat. I can’t even think about food now. Though I do miss sushi. I admit I cheated once before surgery to have sushi that I hadn’t had in many years. Prior to surgery I’d already lost my ability to properly taste food or smell. For some time. I tried to find texture and taste in food. Like salty or sweet or crunchy. I know food isn’t everything but does it need to disgust us in order to lose weight? I know I’m totally off topic. I can’t get back on track. With my health. Was I ever on track? I knew the risks but it was RNY or give up. I just have no one that understands Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, and metabolic disorders, and having Gastric bypass surgery. I don’t expect much if anything, and I never ask for help. But right now I appreciate the response to this. I’m not very good at this. Thank you. christine
  7. It's pretty normal. Everyone (surgery or not) has days with more appetite, more hunger, more cravings... and some people are reacting to this and eat more one day and less the other. However, people on this board here are so damn traumatized and terrified when it comes to food and eating that they hold the opinion only eating the same amount everyday, weighed and counted, is the safe way to eat. Appetite, hunger and feelings of fullness or the lack there of don't have a word in this thing. So many patients seem to choose overly restrictive diets (kind of like an overkill) without seemingly ever giving a thought about if that is sustainable in the long run. Remember, all this stuff didn't work in the long run in the past and got you (and me, too, of course) to a point where WLS was needed. Of course there will always be non-eating-disordered reasons to restrict foods, e . g. dairy if you can't tolerate it, animal flesh because you're a vegetarian, pork because of religious reasons etc. - that's not what I'm talking about. In sum I think it is very sad that only a scarce amount of WLS patients seems to try to connect to what they really want to eat, or to their hunger and appetite cues. Am I really hungry right now? More than usually? Why could that be? What tastes do you really like and eating accordingly to them instead of choking down the next piece of fat free prepared lean protein chicken with two broccoli spears on the side even though you might hate the taste of green vegetables.

I had trouble with whey, so I'm using vegetarian protein powder. The protein drinks I was told we could use any on the list of many. I've settled on Ensure Max chocolate on ice. The dietician said they were fine. You can get them anywhere, just make sure you're getting the Max. https://ensure.com/nutrition-products/ensure-max-protein-shake?gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6IfoBRCiARIsAF6q06sWeqF38nSfacVf6ZDNpsbQZyfXiuKMN5XhV1ekdFEED73WJqGgQrMaAvfeEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

    The Maintenance Thread

but don't understand (the week when I was at 1000/day, I lost 2.5 lbs?? 1000 calories is still your weight loss calories. 2.5 loss is because your body needs more calories. See article below. https://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20140529/fast-weight-loss-may-mean-muscle-loss What are your fat percentages? I consume enough calories to build muscle mass. my body fat percentage is in the 19-24 zone. I'm athletic in the fit/lean zone. do you put any importance on this statistic to yourselves, personally? I put importance on my goal of healthy. I don’t pay attention to my body fat percentage. Many of us lose muscle with rapid weight loss. There is a difference between a low body fat percentage with burnt muscle and with muscle mass. My personal experience after goal, I continued to exercise and not consume enough calories. The result was I burnt muscle and dropped to the 120’s. 10. Hi everyone, I'm having a hard time finding a chewable/liquid/ez-melt calcium/D3 vitamin that's (1) vegetarian or vegan and (2) with no added sugar OR sugar alcohol (fructose is OK). I haven't considered vitamin patches - but I have an allergy to adhesive (tape, bandaids), so that complicates things! I figured I'd ask here in case someone has any good calcium products they can recommend. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! xxx

Starting WLS journey as a vegan

Im a vegan for 3 years now but I’ve had the RYN in 2000. I was a vegetarian for 8 years. I get my portein from seiten, spinach, broccoli, tempeh, nuts, beans and powder vegan supplements! I prefer to chew..
  12. me too!! I could easily be vegetarian, but vegan would be a struggle - I'd have a REALLY hard time giving up dairy!

    ***Qustions for Sleevers***

VSG 11/17 NY Do you feel you were given enough information on this procedure pre op and post op? yes I went to the 3 required teaching pre op info sessions and monthly post op support groups. They were repetitive but drilled the info in. Did they explain that you will still feel real and head hunger with any surgery procedure? Or tell you hunger will go away? I don't think I ever really bought into the bargain of never feeling hunger again so I didnt count on that. It seemed like a fairly tale. I wasn't banking on that helping me personally. And they always reinforced the fact that *some people* experienced it. I was just hoping for reduced capacity and restriction honestly. Did they give you clear instructions on how to work your plan? yes they provided clear personalized information, especially since I was hell bent on going vegan again... Settled on flexible vegetarianism, thank goodness 😆 Was the psych evaluation just a hoop to jump through? Would you have benefited doing more therapy before surgery? Initially I worried because I've never seen a therapist prior and thought Damnit this is going to make or break it all, then when I arrived at the office i thought piece of pie piece of cake I'll ace this... They want to get people in and out. But surprisingly during my singular session when I didn't have the answers to some unexpected questions (which I freely admitted... Rookie move) the therapist in his elder wisdom suggested I watch some more YouTubes and join an online support group or two! I think it was just the right amount of sessions for me. Were your follow up appointments with your surgeons and dietician helpful? Extremely. They always always always felr accessible and helpful. Listened to my concerns, ran the proper tests ,called me tiny, ran extras if i had a concern, answered emails, told me I was pretty, said I could eat fun food abroad, shot straight with me if I was behind the losing curve, told me to try to give up coffee for GERD's sake (and I did... no impact) They have been amazing amd I'm so sorry if anyone has anything less Did you understand that you can gain weight back? Did they help with a list of instructions and things to do and not to do? Yes. But I think I began to worry like 6 months post when i started seeing post floating around stating that it was inevitable. Like a natural law. That absolutely everyone will regain a certain amount and just prepare for it. And it felt so contradictory to what i was being taught. I was in contact with sone people in support group who regained but they were honest about why... They ate stuff that caused it. And others that didn't regain. They did not eat stuff. Sure medical issue can attribute to regain but none of the 20+ people on either side of maintaining said that. It was always just food. but back to the question yes they were very clear about portion control and sustainable lifestyle changes. If you had regain, did you contact your team and were they helpful? I have had regain already its usually a few lbs. Never more that 7-8lbs from my lowest ever. I do feel like I could come up with a plan which involve my Team. For now im still closely working the plan they gave me. They gave me instructions into the 2yr period. They said be vigilant. Don't start making continuous poor overall choices (like rice/bread/pasta/chips daily - this may work for some but will not work for me at all especially since I dont really eat animal protein so I'm hardly ever dense protein forward)

    ❤ MAY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Checking in! *8 months post RNY* I haven’t ran nearly as much as I planned this month. I’ve been eating well balanced pescatarian and vegetarian meals since the 1st. I meal prepped for my Myrtle Beach trip and didn’t stray from it (lost 6lbs while ON vacation). My starting weight was 199lbs this month with an end goal of 187lbs. As of yesterday I’m 191lbs so I might hit my goal! I’m 26lbs away from goal weight. Here’s a pic of me on vacation a few days ago vs me in July of 2018 when I was 2 months away from my surgery date.
  15. I didn't consider bypass, though my surgeon would have preferred it for me because I my endoscopy showed some small ulcers and reflux. I was adamant I wanted the sleeve. I was worried about the malabsorption - really worried. I already have a harder time getting everything I need from my diet because I am vegetarian (well, post-surgery I don't because all the supplements I take, but I used to). And I have the PCOS thinning hair - I know that hair loss can be a problem with bypass and malabsorption, and I was terrified to lose more hair. (I am getting a little more hair left in the comb now - but I believe the 3-6 month hair loss common with WLS is due to the anaesthetic, and is not permanent. At least that's what I'm hoping.)

    February 2019 weight loss buds

This is lunch today. Homemade egg drop soup! A cup of stock (vege, cause I'm trying to go back to vegetarianism) a little soy sauce, black pepper, pinch of turmeric, a little coconut oil, a pinch of nutritional yeast. Wait for it to boil then drop a couple of beaten eggs in slowly while stirring vigorously. Warm, tasty, cures my ramen cravings and easy on the pouch! Yay, something I actually enjoy eating for once! Lol. Sent from my CPH1719 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Sous vide cooking!

I got one just prior to surgery, so a few weeks ago. My first meal with it was salmon, I did the same thing you did: cooked it with the Sous Vide then pan fried it very quickly. It was wonderful. I was a vegetarian for 20 years, so I am not great at cooking meat. This has kept me from overcooking it. I’m in the purée stage right now, and getting ready to bring in some soft foods. So I’m doing some food prep today for it. I’ll be cooking more salmon, some brown chicken meat, and egg Sous Vide (omg, melt in your mouth delicious!). The meats should be soft enough to make some nice spreads with so that I can tolerate it next week. I’m planning on freezing most of the meats to pull from as needed. Food prep is key for me to stay on track. My little Sous Vide gadget has taken it to the next level, which I’m thrilled with.
  18. And I am reporting, in. Had to postpone until yesterday, had to not see the Head Nurse-Practioner Valerie but Shannon. Valerie also does the entrance visits for new people, they must have a big crop because she had nothing available until July. Shannon is pretty okay, not quite as grounded and sure of herself. Oohed and ahhed about my weight loss. Said my stomach ouch is not inflamed at the endiscopy, the stoma although still very small is patent. That means things should start moving down better. Then we come to my ulcers, they are still there in the jejumen, New theory , they have a narrowed the lumen(width) to such an extent that stuff isn't digesting well until you get to the point where stomach remaining secretions, bile and pancreatic juices get reintroduced downstream. So I will, have another endoscopy late June or into July, if thi,ngs are worse or even the same 8-to-5 chance I will require surgery. Usually by 6-8 months you're healed. And no, they didn't expect it, no way of guessing I will. have this problem. Stay on same level of diet, try to get protein more, vegan/ vegetarian okay if I still am having trouble with Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and most meats. High Protein levels will help me heal, be sure to take all meds and. minerals to keep a healthy basis in case of possible surgery. And she thinks I look great, I think still I look like Road Kill! But maybe I am over- critical with myself.

1/2 the person I used to be

That 2/4/2014 ticker keeps following me around. I do not know where it came from but September 5th 2018. is my true date. On the other date, as far as I can remember, I was fat, depressed but still working for Wal-Mart. My late husband was hostile toward me, it turns out he was in process of dying, I thought he maybe had Alzheimers, well I did promise in sickness and heath, so I tried to not let, people know my daily sorrows at home, because I did have my pride. He ad me convinced I could not do much of anything right. I was a horrid housekeeper,, my cooking was so horrendous that he was conviced I would kill him for his, insurance. He would tell me he didn't,want any,of my foul cooking, then after half an hour of me leaving,he and my son would go to China Buffet or another local restaurant. You know how it feels to be held at gunpoint? My life was pretty much like that, which way do I move to keep him calm and quiet? Luckily we had no guns or ammo in the house, or I might have been shot. And still I tried to hang on, he would threaten " When I know for certain I am going to die, I will kill both our son and you because you are such inept failures and couldn't survive without me!" As it turns out, the hereditary kidney disease rampant in his family was also killing him. His doctor had warned him a couple of years before that without, proper specialist assistance he was surly going to die. About this time or shortly before he started not letting me accompli to doctors appointments. Usually if someone in our family had to see a doctor the rest of us would go for moral support.I had no. clue all this was going on, found the paperwork among his personal effects after his death. Why did the doctor not tell me or my son? Well we have a nasty little health manifesto called HIPAA, if someone requests another person. not know such information, the doctor is bound by law not to tell. I had been married to him 44 years, you would have thought I or our son would be his next of kin and should been told, well it Fi,dnot happen. And,he had also convinced me that no one really liked, loved or could put up with me. I was merely an extension of him and had. the personality of vanilla blancmange pudding. I could not possibly be liked by someone,in their, own mind. Well to swich the subject I have, now shrunk down to 224 from a High Weight of 365+ in October 2017 and if my,caculations are correct 95 pounds lost in, just 8 months. I am currently losing 1 of your kg a week so there is a strong possibility I may be under 200 pounds by my one-year anniversary, that would leave me approximately 25 pounds from goal which I originally thought would be March 2020. I had an appointment at my Bairatric clinic yesterday, I went in feeling I was resembling Road Kill, but they honestly believe I am doi,g well. My pouch is no longer showing signs of rampant gastritis, stoma still small but no longer a pinhole from all the swelling. Alas the jejunal ulcers still abide, she suspects they are causing the recurrent emesis, they keep the lumen of my RNY smaller so things above pureed move slower. Yes I am digesting, the foods but it is farther down where my bile and pancreatic juices come back in. So,continue as I have been but go ahead if I make vegetable soup, don't strain , try to chew up the veggies if they are smallish size. I am fated for one more endosvopy, they will let me know when but unless there is great improvement I may have surgical intervention done by my Doctor Needleman. I don't have anotherWell Bariatric scheduled until August 15th but endoscopy late June or somewhere in July. Right now, and kind of pinned her down on this, told her I come from a wagering background, 8to5 😸👩 I will get surgery, said this usually resolves by 6-8 months. But there was No Way that ,this had been in my forecast. Keep on with vitamins and minerals that will fill in the nutritional gaps, protein of course , try to find a kind my pouch, will accept, vegetarian is still okay if milk and animal meats fail me. And she is very pleased to see how good I look! I have gone from Looking like my mother, my Aunt Grace, her older sister and this week I look like Grandma Cora their mother, a big surprise because she was physically much shorter than me. So I don't know who I will finally resemble at goal, I just hope I look good and don't frighten small childre, months footpath. And I have absolutely no H Pylori, they keep testing to make sure it isn't a complication. But James, I have had 12 endoscopies, 9 at Ohio State University Hospital. The workers at the Hepatology/Endoscopy section now call me by name instead of a #. One time Dr Noria, my Dr Needlemans associate had an unexpected something come up so asked her chief resident to do it. I'm lying on the gurney , he comes in and says " Assume the Position" that meant to slide up to the top of the gurney and flip onto the Left side. Yeah I knew what he meant!

Okay so since my pouch isn’t very fond of meat and I don’t feel like fighting her about it I’ve decided to challenge myself to Meatless May. My problem in the past when I tried to switch to vegetarianism was that I planned poorly. This time I chose to prep simple vegetarian and pescatarian meals. I bought groceries to help with my meal prep and for now I’ll use meat substitutes a couple of times a week while gradually trying Whole food recipes to add into my diet. I have a variety of nuts, seeds, nut butter, cheese,Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, etc to help me get my protein in. Also I’ll still be drinking Premier protein once a day until I get a better blender for protein smoothies (without powder, yuck).

Vegetarian here, 6.5 months post vsg. :) Vegetarian for 23 years so it just feels normal to me at this point. I try and focus on protein by including dairy, beans, lentils, nuts, tofu etc. If I feel I’m missing the mark on protein on a given day I might add in a premier protein but it’s rare these days. Veggies also have protein... not so hard to do :)

Starting WLS journey as a vegan

Hi! I am not vegan...i would say that you might want to check out vegan athlete blogs. A lot of those writers talk about protein consumption and being vegan. I believe a lot of protein powders are veg but aren't vegan...vega is good - I'm not sure what your nut will think or if they have a unflavored variety. My nut recommends Ripple due to its protein amount - non dairy mixer for protein shakes. You could make veggie broth (pre surgery) and add protein to it. I didn't drink any broth. Just water and protein shakes during my liquid phase. Once you are out of liquids you can't have any meat alternatives till week 5, such as veggie burgers but that is just my nut's opinion. You can have tofu in the soft pureed food stage. Wild sprouts has a high protein tofu. I made a lentil soup and pureed it with high protein tofu. You can do smoothies with silken tofu, too. After week 5 or 6 you should totally be good. You can have meat subs and I think I will make my own seitan (wheat gluten). I got the thumbs up by nut etc. I am not a medical expert I just think being vegan or vegetarian requires a little more research and logging everything to make sure you hit ur protein goals. Good luck. I hope your nut will learn from you and change her mind.

Yeah I think this is totally do-able as a vegetarian. You just have to be smart about things. I do think it's harder to do vegan, but still possible. Lacto-ovo vegetarians would have the easiest time of it as do pescatarians.

A girl in my FB group has bypass and is vegetarian. She eats dairy and eggs, though. Vegans can also have the surgery, but they rely on beans and soy product a lot. They sell separate supplements with amino acids in them for vegans/vegetarians. I get the vast majority of my protein from dairy (cottage cheese).
