    Food Before and After Photos

By 6 months out, I feel like I could eat double of I can right after surgery. Nutritionists said that’s because I am working out now. It’s not where near how much I used to be able to eat, but I sometimes feel worried that I could eat so much more now compare to just 3oz. I think I could eat about 6-8 oz if I really want to. I need to eat denser food to feel full. I could drink a full bowl of soup and still don’t feel full. So I eat a lot of meat. I work out about 3 hours a week. I think more though. On the days I work out, I do consistently feel that I want to eat more.
  2. Hi All...having some strange post surgery happenings and wondering what is normal. Let me first say that I do walk pretty briskly for an hour 5 days per week and I also swim laps 5 times per week for an hour. So, I am getting A LOT of quality movement on top of general stretching, etc. I am about 9 weeks post op for VSG and everything is SORE. My knees are killing me, my back, my legs, my arms..you get my point. Weeks 4-6 I was insanely tired and that has gotten better but now I have this new problem. I don't know if it's just because I'm existing in this calorie deficit or what. (?) I'm at about 900 calories per day and have been told to keep it there until I hit goal. I am getting about 80 grams of protein per day. I am very good about taking my vitamins. On top of the multi-vitamin, I take calcium, magnesium, tryptophan (for sleep), stool softener, ursodiol (gall bladder). Where I am not doing quite as well is water. Some days I am good with water, but I'd say about 50-60 oz of water might be my usual intake. I have a job where I drive a lot and I am not near a bathroom, so that's a problem I have to be careful about. There is still room for improvement there and I acknowledge it. I am working on it! Is this achy/sore feeling normal? Has anyone else encountered this? I'm not against asking my surgeon's office, but they have not been overly helpful with my questions in the past. It feels like I get dismissed by them and that has been very frustrating. I keep getting told "well you're not our normal patient" and then I feel like I am left to figure this all out on my own. It's lonely and frustrating. I'd like to do something to not be so sore, but this has been going on for about two weeks. Any thoughts?

    Where my shorties at?!

No, no difference, however, it is important to remember that everyone loses at their own rate & there is no right or wrong rate. So many get very anxious that they’re not losing enough or fast enough. It’s not a race and every pound is a win. I always say celebrate every pound you lose. You’ll discover there is a lot of variation in the pre surgery diet @RuizAyres but we always say it’s best to follow your plan and not someone else's. I know my surgeon gave different patients different plans based on their health status, current weight, etc. it could be three shakes a day or two shakes & one protein plus vegetables meal a day. It could be no shake but milk like @summerseeker. The 3 or 2 shake plans tend to be the most common. He put me in keto for the two weeks prior. There’ll be slight variations in the post surgical plan too. Also, not sure your age, I was almost 54 when I had my surgery and there are people here who were in their 60s and 70s so you’ll be fine. There was a thread a little while ago called 50 and over I think. You could search for it as you might find it interesting. Found it:

    Yoga Supplies and Tips Please

Well I did it!! It was an hour and a half long and by the end my legs and arms were shaking and I was all sweaty unlike the rest of the class because it was a workout for me but I had fun. The instructor came up to me afterwards and said that I was actually quite flexible for a first timer. I’m pretty sure she was just being encouraging but it was still nice. Next week there is an cardio/ strength class I want to do and of course yoga again. They both meet twice a week but I will see how I do after the first set. May need a few days to recover. lol
  5. Over 3 yrs from revision (gerd) and I can eat about a cup of food comfortably. I always think I can eat the whole steak though but that feeling goes away after a few bites lol. I think protein will always be like that for me. So it really depends on what I eat. Either way, it's really fun & liberating to be able to experiment and eat all these delicious foods and focus on quality instead of quantity.

As of yesterday, I was back under 200 pounds, so that was an exciting milestone! I have been tracking my food, walking each day, doing a long hike on the weekends, and the weight has been coming off at the expected pace. I am averaging about 1300 calories a day in consumption and my watch says I am averaging about 2300 calories a day of burn, which works out to an average calorie deficit of 1000 per day and I am right on that target of losing 2 pounds per week. I am really pleased that my metabolism seems normal and that my restriction still prevents me from eating too much in a single sitting. I had a long chat with my husband about how "dieting" is so different this time around from when I had lost weight pre-surgery. This is my first time really trying to lose weight since my surgery and it is definitely much easier than it used to be.

    Where my shorties at?!

It’s been 5 years so my memory is super clear, but I do remember being given a 1oz med cup in the hospital. I believe I was told to drink one of those full of protein shake every hour while awake. So assuming 16 hours awake that is 16 oz so just about 1.5 shakes. I think that was for the first week, then increased after that. All programs do vary with their instructions though!

    14 Days to Go!

Thanks! We definitely have this! My doc put me on a 12 WEEK milk diet (milk with skimmed milk powder, a cup of broth for lunch and lots of water) It's been really tough and it's been ten weeks of taking it all in my stride, but as it gets closer, I'm starting to get nervous! The only surgery I've ever had has been an impacted wisdom tooth removal and this is major surgery! I'm at the point where I just want it all over with now to start the major weight loss, but I also want to delay it because of fear and one last Pizza Hut pig out. But the end is in sight and I'm excited!

    Where my shorties at?!

5 shakes per day? Never! I think max I ever had was 2 or maybe 3 in a day. I drink premier protein, so 30g protein each. I think at 5 a day (so 150g protein) is even more protein than most body builders need. I’m 5 years out now. Still drink 1/day for breakfast and am able to hit my 90g daily protein goal easily with food.

    Where my shorties at?!

Hi, I’m 5’2” but was 5’4 1/2” and shrinking. My surgery date is October 21st. Will start pre-op diet after speaking with nutritionist again on10/01. I was reading the info on pre op and during and after surgery about nutrition. Did you all drink 5 shakes per day every 3 hours?? I don’t like them that much! BJ’s has a variety of flavors though.

    Reset

Hurray!!! Gains have gone plus another 1.8lbs on top 🥳🥳🥳 Did a very happy bathroom dance this morning 💃 @ShoppGirlI knew exactly what you meant! It’s why I’m not too fussed if I have to complete the LRD over Christmas because it does away with the temptations for me. I think sometimes we eat more of things we shouldn’t over Christmas because it’s almost like it’s expected or excused? Or is that just me? @FifiLuxHow maddening for you 😡 It could be water retention though, especially if you have been eating foods prepared by someone else? My body does complain and take a couple of days to settle down after travelling so hopefully yours will be back to showing target (or below) on your scales in the next few days 🤞🤞 Half portion pancakes? Is there such a thing?? 😉 Off to the hospital to have my eyes checked in a bit. Hopefully this will be the last time as I’m no longer on the meds that can cause eye problems. Had bloods yesterday and the LFT is still high. Oh well, just have them done again in 3 weeks. I’m not worried about it now, covid and antivirals have quite probably contributed to my levels. I did try to explain to the Rheumatology nurse who rang but she didn’t seem to grasp what was trying to explain 🤷‍♀️ I’m sure if it was a massive issue, I would be in to see the Consultant 🙂 TFI Friday eh?

I don't think my cat is impressed with my new lifestyle as he sits in front of the oven expecting to be served food however I don't think I have used my oven more than twice in the year since my op, now it is air fryer or slow cooker if cooking. Guess he misses his oven cooked chicken 😂 I know he missed me (his servant) while I was in hospital for so many months with my post-op complications as he has been so affectionate and chatty since I was finally released last November. For weeks I felt he would go into panic mode if I grimaced and had a bit of pain but I presume he was just afraid I would not be home to serve him!

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

I am just back from a week in D.C. and I walked soooooo much every day without any exhaustion or pain so that is a huge win for me, no way I could have done that in recent years pre-op. I tried to stock up on clothes while in the US but found it very frustrating as could find very little I liked that fit me and the things I did like were not available in my size. I actually fit in to a size 0 pair of Karl Lagerfeld trousers but they were a bit big on the waist so I decided they weren't worth the price to then have to pay to be altered, but the sizing across the brands I tried was so inconsistent it was exhausting, I think I spent almost 3 hours in a Macys trying things on and just came away with a bra and cardigan!

    Blood in stool after vgs

I had a very sudden diarrhoea attack in hospital on day 3. It was very dark & smelly & obviously from the surgery (old blood that slowly passed through my intestines). If yours is a brighter red that is newer blood so more likely from a small tear that occured as a result of your painful post constipation poop. That’s not unusual & they generally heal on their own … But do ring your surgeon’s office/medical team to check (which is what @SpartanMaker was suggesting) to be sure everything is okay. They’re the experts when it comes to experiences like unusual bleeding. Try to keep on top of the constipation. You may need to take something everyday or every couple of days to avoid experiencing the discomfort of being constipated for several days. It will be a regular experience (battle) while you’re losing. Also add a soluble fibre to each day to help keep things moving.

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

well, its one of my superpowers lololololzzz i'm not uncomfortable or in pain (just look about 2-3 months pregnant), but sometimes the first post-vacay poop is a little challenging....the trick is to BREATHE thru it hahahahha. vacay constipation is a staple in my life. sigh. i think its more mental...i only like to go at home.🤷🏻‍♀️

I technically have a cat. She's 10 years old and when my we got her, I was still living at home. As much as she loved me, she was definitely my mother's cat, and after my mother died, I had to take her to live with my friend who has a more than enough room and a landlord that allows pets. She hates me now, and I understand even though it makes me sad when I see her (usually three times a week. However, she is still my mothers baby and my little fur sister and she is named Wilhelmina Felicity Biggleswade

Jamielogical thank you for your inspiring words of motivation I had the VSG about 3 years ago and regain weight to the point I was thinking there is no way to get it back off. After reading your story I have the motivation I needed to not give up the fight and reclaim myself.
  19. another day, another (clone-like) salad. this is my first meal of the day (at 3pm) cuz i decided i needed help with my handstand so i went to a "handstand workshop" this AM. everyone was super cool and nice so i ended up hanging out at the studio afterwards and totally lost track of time! anyway got home and realized i actually ran out of leafy greens, so this baby is just chopped carrots, apples and cucumber topped with bacon pieces and an entire burrata ball! (with balsamic glaze and a homemade vinaigrette) 463 calories for the bowl, ate ALL the burrata (yum!), and maybe 2/3 of the rest of the stuff.

I haven't checked in in a while. I got super busy with haunt season starting and getting into the groove of working weekends. So far, everything has been going well. I haven't had any dumping, overeating, etc. I'm on regular diet now with a daily goal of 64oz of protein but I blow through that and usually hit over 100. I am still supplementing with a Fairlife either for breakfast or a snack before going to the gym. Last night was my first time eating out out (I've done Sunday breakfast but it's always an egg). We went to BJs and it's crazy how hyperaware you become of portions. In the past, we would get an app, entree, and dessert. My kids are having "sympathy pains" and have started eating smaller portions so we only got entrees. In the past, I would have gotten a burger or sandwich with fries and eaten the whole thing. I ended up getting a chicken breast dish and brought enough home to have lunch for the next two days. The weight loss has been up and down since I weigh daily right now. I won't say I've stalled because if I just looked at my Monday entries, it shows a consistent loss. This week is the first week that people have noticed and I can see a difference when I look in the mirror. I donated almost half my closet of size 18/20 items that were just too big. I'm in a size 16, almost a 14 and I went from a 2XL shirt to a large.

I have not mastered the adding of protein powder to other foods. I tried to mix Isopure in my soup last week and it got weird. Luckily I've been hitting my protein goals with food but I do supplement one Fairlife a day just to give m that extra 30g. When you get to soft food, chicken salad is a game changer. I was eating it at least once a day. Now that I'm on regular foods, I love those snack packs that are like adult lunchables. My starting goal was 64oz of protein and between the waters and Fairlife I was able to hit it pretty consistently.
  22. I think my reasoning is because I am low key freaking out because I am *done* losing weight and maintaining and I have never ever ever ever been in this position. Always losing or gaining. So eating close to 2000 calories a day and only being 8months post op, my mind is telling me that I am going to start gaining and this is not sustainable. I have never stayed this active this long either lol Its just a new life that I am not used to, and this week I am panicking (WEIRD!) I am sure that I need to talk to a therapist LOL but you guys are it for me at this moment. 🤣
  23. Hi all I’ve had to take a laxative as it’s been over a week since I went to the toilet. This painfully moved everything along. Today I passed a stool with blood in it. Not too much but enough to scare me. I’ve obviously had stomach surgery but this wasn’t mentioned. Is it normal? My sleeve was 6 days ago. My last bowel movement before laxatives was 8 days ago. Tia
  24. soooo question:...why do you think you need to be in the 1500-1700 range if you are maintaining fine in the 1800-2000 range? logic would dictate that you would lose weight given your current exercise regimen if you dropped cals...are you looking to lose more weight? or maybe decrease activity levels? if so, then yeah dropping down a few hundred cals would do the trick. but if not, then why try to fix something that ain't broke? I am a good 7 inches shorter than you and i maintain with 2300 cals a day...been at this level for about a year, and my weight has hovered around the same number +/- 3lbs the entire time. i don't count nor manage macros anymore, but a quick glance at MFP show that i'm well over 150g of net carbs every day this week and protein about 80g more or less; as for exercise, from what i've read from your posts we are probably about the same activity expenditure range. you wont "ruin everything" if you keep on top of things and watch whats happening (which sounds like what you are already doing), if you do that you would have plenty of time to adjust and make changes before it all goes to shite. you're doing great! keep it up
  25. Hi all! So I am working on Maintenance, I feel good, I *think* I look good, health is great, I am eating anywhere from 1800-2000 calories a day. I am burning around 500-700calories for my workout and walking over 10k steps a day usually hitting 11,500 steps. I am maintaining which is great! I am hungry or I get lethargic which when I eat helps a lot! My obese mind set is slightly freaking out. and I am scared because I'm still within the year of my surgery I am messing it up. I have tried all week to stay within the 1500-1700 calories, 140g carbs, 40g fat that my bariatric packet tells me, and its IMPOSSIBLE. I know I have done well on this journey, I am just terrified of going back and eating too much and ruining all this progress. My approximate daily macros: 1700-2000 calories 100-150g carbs 130-175g protein 65-80g fat Just need reassurance I am not alone in this journey.
