  1. Hi, I'm hoping to hear what other docs issue as the post op diet. I think I have some pretty conservitive rules which i am fine with following. I'm wondering what other folks have to do? I have to do some traveling one month out- and want to be prepared for that since I will be away from home (just on a relaxing vaca)- but all the same... It's also a challenge for me b/c I'm a vegetarian. Here's thier diet plan goal: 60 grams of protein a day 10 day pre op full liquid diet 4 day clear liquid post surgery 10 days full liquid 14 days blenderized I had to do a practice 3 day liquid diet already, it wasn't so bad. Lots of protein shakes and some blended soups. 38 days... start to finish...I wonder how much I will loose in that time alone? How much did you loose in the few recover weeks post op? If you could recommend one solid food to introduce first, what would it be? thank you! scheduled for March 15th!

    Help!

Hi , I'm 8 months post op with gastric sleeve. Also, I am a pescotarian( eating fish only twice week.. Been vegetarian for 2 years only eating fish to get my Protein in). Post surgery I weighed 298. I now weigh 243 but I have gained 11 pounds in the last two weeks. I have had two spine surgeries and I have another disc issue. I cannot really exercise how I wold like. I can walk but I love to jog. It seems like walking take too long. Plus, now I can't jog because of the spine. So , I am overrating because of the condition of my health( I'm an extrovert and now I'm not working at home all day because of the pain). I know this is not an excuse. Today, I began the five day pouch test. I am really struggling ..wanting carbs and splenda! I am wondering how much protein I should be eating a day? Also, when they say a cup of food is how much we should be eating , are they talking about the cup that comes with those spoons or the cup that is white and have calibrations? I just can't remember ? I have been reading weight loss stories today, journaling my food, joined this site and asking for help? I know I eat and have probaly stretched my sleeve. I hope I can rebound. Please reply.

    I Think I'm Having a Cracker Problem

Nuts are a great idea! Thanks. And I agree ... I think I need to get the crackers out of the house! I'm vegetarian, but perhaps I should check out some veggie Jerky options. Thanks for your response!
  4. I tried not ordering anything to drink, but that usually ends up with some weird looks. So I just go with Water by default, however I don't even touch it. In the last year I've become a vegetarian and you'll rarely find an unchewable piece of tofu or vegetable. Soups are by far my favorite thing to have out. I'm more adventurous out now as well: Pho, Indian, Japanese, Greek. When I did eat meat: rare filet minon was my go to for dinners out, and NJ has great steak. It's close enough to Philly and NY to go out for dinner.

Any foods you can never eat again???

Thanks for all of your posts. I'll ask about seaweed at my consultation this Friday. I'm a vegetarian, so I don't need to worry about not eating meat. I'm glad to hear some people are lucky and can eat anything, just in small amounts. That is what I want out of the band - portion control. If seaweed is off limits, I can always ask the chef to leave out the seaweed. My favorite is kamikaze sushi - seaweed, rice with avocado, friend tempura bits & spicy red sauce - yum!!!
  6. I am close to a year out and eat salads quite often being a vegetarian... However I was not able to eat them without vomiting or diarrhea until about 5 mos out. Even then I gradually went into them.. a few bites here and there just to test the waters... NOw I have no problem and can eat kale, greens, spinach, salade etc... NO problems.

    Winter Months

Thank you. I do it by busting my butt. No white carbs, very little meat (I'm pretty much vegetarian at this point except fish), I keep calories at 600 daily, and hard cardio daily. My goal is to have surgery, lose 102 pounds, and have plastic surgery in one year. I was banded 12/6/06 and my plastic surgery is scheduled for 12/3/07.

Why I am so hungry all the time.

I am 3+ months out of surgery. I don't enjoy food. There I said it. Take today for example, over here in the uk we traditionally have what we call a Sunday dinner which consists of a joint of meat (if you aren't vegetarian) along with vegetables and roast potatoes as well as fabulous Yorkshire Puddings with gravy. I haven't enjoyed any of my "Sunday dinners" since after my surgery. Its a combination of things I think, even though I put a tiny amount on my plate, I still get anxious that I won't be able to enjoy it and that I will fill up too quickly. This makes it a self fulfilling prophecy as it feels like my stomach gets tighter and then obviously I can only eat a few mouthfuls. I don't get hungry very often at all but I do get head hunger most days which is a pain. I want to eat something, because I am thinking I should be eating for my health, even though I am not hungry, confused much lol. In saying that, I did enjoy something yesterday but I think it was because I knew the size of it before I started eating it and I didn't get anxious about it. It was half a corn cob with a little butter on it,it was divine! Its a journey as we all know and I have been lucky in that I have lost weight most weeks so haven't really suffered much (yet!)

    Hidradenitis Suppurativa?

That's the same antibiotic I use, once I became a vegetarian and lost weight through exercise it became noticeably better. I'm pre op and was hoping it would be less obnoxious post op, sometimes it's a pain to keep trekking at the gym during these flares.

Questions for those with a low BMI

I have a lower BMI and am waiting for a surgery date. I was cleared for this surgery this past fall and was at 200 (5'6) and now I'm at 230, so that just goes to show you that obesity, like alcholism, is a progressive disease. If I could do it by following a diet, I would not be in this desperate place. Because let's be honest...being 200 -230 and contemplating getting surgery to place a silicone band around your stomach and a port in your abs, you have to have hit the wall and have no where else to turn.:paranoid I have been thin twice in my life and each time was short lived. To get there and stay there I had to starve myself and take herbal or prescription appetite suppresants. Eventually hunger always won and I eventually lost the battle and regained my weight. One of those times I did the Atkins. I actually was on it for 2 years. For me personally, it was a disaster, it ruined my digestive system. I developed diveriticulitis from all the meat eaten (not to mention how guilty I felt eating all that animal meat!) and I have since gone vegetarian. Not able to sustain long term low carb eating, as soon as I began eating some carbs, my body seemed to go haywire and I ballooned faster than I have ever seen my body do before. MY body can't seem to tolerate being 200-230. My knees hurt, I ache, I'm dizzy, I feel sick, I have GERD, heart palpitations, out of breath, sleep apnea. All the symptoms of those who are much higher. So, I'm guessing every body is different in what it can handle. I wish the lower BMI people all the best and I think we should have our own thread or something. :-)
  11. Ask about things that matter to you. I am a vegetarian. My first question was what were her thoughts on plant based diets? I also have multiple food allergies and can't eat artificial sweeteners and food dyes. I needed to know we could work around these things. I found many dietitians point to the many flavored Protein drinks. Some programs even have deals with some of the bigger names. None of them would have worked for me. It took doing some homework but I have found that Isopure makes an unflavored whey protein isolate powder and Bob's Red Mill makes a soy isolate Protein Powder. I haven't tried the Bob's Red Mill although I do use a lot of their products. I do use the Isopure and like that is can be mixed in both hot and cold beverages. That sickly sweet taste often leaves many burnt out on Protein shakes.

My Quirks, My Quirks, My Lovely Sleeved Quirks.

Everything about me is a little left of center. I doubt anyone would blink an eye at me doing something like that. I'm the fat vegetarian. The gal with purple dredlocks The gal with multiple allergies. Seriously I had to ask someone in the grocery store to go get me a box of Pasta once because they were too close to the seafood department. I'm the fat chick who always thought I was cute. ALWAYS. I went through a bento making phase so I have all sorts of tiny containers. I say long live the quirks, they are what makes us special and unique! Oh and I just ordered these for the car and busy days running errands to avoid temptation. They come in smaller and larger sizes and are interchangeable.

    Avoiding Infections?

Hey Leener, Thanks for the soapbox approval. Since you are a vegetarian, be sure to read that article I put in the food forum. There is important info in there about getting the Protein you need as a vegetarian. And, the more I read about people losing their bands to infections and erosions the more nervous I get. I invested my meger inheritance in this lovely little band, if I were sitting here with no band and my thoughts of what I 'should have done with that money' I think I'd lose my mind. Here's to a wiser and healthier us!
  14. My weight struggles also began with Prednisone. Prior to a very bad posin ivy episode I had been a vegetarian 17 years and did a lot of juice fasting, etc. was always worried about my weight but I really wasn't fat. I think I set my system up for storage big time and when I was given IV prednisone in an ER I gained about 50 pounds very quickly. Then the panic dieting, the up and down yo yo series of diets always resulting in more weight gain. That initial 50 got a companion 50 over time and I've never been able to lose it. Instead I have about another 20 on top of that that fluctuates. I'll never get down to where I was but I'd like to be about 100 pounds thinner. Bring on the band! To the women above who experienced abuse, I am so sorry for your painful histories -- you both have a lot of courage. Thanks for sharing!

    Vegetarian?!?

Tofu, edamame beans (and other beans/lentils) and eggs are my go to (not vegetarian but finding a lot of meat not agreeing with my pouch).

    Vegetarians?

I was a vegetarian for 4 years...not anymore. When I was a vegetarian I ate south beach diet ;minded and ate a lot of quorn which is oh so delicious. I think it is way better than chicken. I ate tofu, edamame, hummus, and lots of cheese. Maybe you can find an unflavored protein powder and mix it in hummus. Healthwise makes hot chocolate packets that you mix with water. Those are good and have 15 grams of protein.

    Vegetarians?

Texturized vegetable Protein, tempeh and seitan (vital wheat gluten) are vegan/vegetarian options that are as high or higher in protein than meat, and TVP is easy to digest (depending on how you make it, it could easily be considered a puréed food). I love them all (make my own seitan, it tastes better. recipe is on the bag) and have gotten clearance from my doc and nut to utilize them as a staple in my post op diet. In addition, you might want to check out the Facebook page of Dr. Garth Davis. He is a Bariatric surgeon in Texas (had a show on tv for sometime) who is a huge supporter of vegetarian/vegan diets after Bariatric surgery. You will find useful info there. I also strongly believe that taking a probiotic regularly helps greatly with healing, immune system and overall well being. Give it a try, I hope it helps.

    Newly Debanded

I had my lap band removed two days ago after having it in for 2 years. I intially lost 20 pounds and then went on the fill/unfill roller coaster and eventually unfilled about 6 months post surgery because could never get the sweet spot. Because I was unfilled, I over induldged (which is easy to do) and PB'ing was a part of everyday life for me. I spoke to my original surgeon and a new surgeon about getting it out - insurance denied the removal. Months later my port site started hurting and the pain got worse, visited dr on Tuesday and he said that he can file an appeal. By Friday (11/16) I couldn't stand it and went to the ER. He did an emergency removal and said I had a lot of scar tissue. He gave me a big waist band type thing to wear while walking and Lortab for pain (which has worked good). I had a lot of pain from the intubation tube (apparently I'm a fighter) but that has subsided somewhat. I've eaten scrambled eggs, cream of wheat and milk. Kept it bland and soft as per instructions. I was given carafate to prevent ulcers and have experienced constipation. All in all I'm very pleased with the removal and am looking forward to a life without that band in me. My DH was worried I will start over eating, which I honestly don't think that's a problem. One thing that did change while banded was I became a vegetarian, so when I indulge it's on the good stuff. If anyone has any words of wisdom after being debanded and liking it. Please let me know. Thanks for letting me share.

    kidney infections?!? scared!

Sounds like you need antibiotics. But here is another thing. An all protein diet causes kidney stones. Its from your kidneys filtering protein. A lot of people I talked to got this. Even I started to develope kidney pain. 3 weeks in myself. You can't do all protein all the time. You need to eat veggies grains and fruits. You will not die or weaken if you do this. Protein Is just to speed the weight loss along before the hunger is unbearable again. And help your organs repair. Honestly I would of been better off buying a big van and camping out doing isopurs for a month. Same results plus I'd have a van. Ha. But I believe I will get a good job and redeem myself financially in a few years. Anyway I wish you well. Vegetarians live so I know the all protein thing is just for weight loss. They say you can't absorb as much but I hardly ate protein prior. And I was fine accept for being a sugar cube.
  20. Another broken promise! I suck! I promised myself I would write more often and be more present HERE . . . hmm, that isn’t going so well. I popped on this evening because I actually made it home before 8 p.m. and thought about all you beautiful women when I did it. I had a few how you doing messages and thought, I better at least post a blog and say hola!! Work is crazy. Crime doesn’t stop. For those of you who don’t know, I’m a victim advocate with the DA’s office. Lately, nothing but homicides and sexual assaults; to say it has been INSANE at work is an understatement. Nonstop trials and nonstop crime. I often joke that even if crime in Denver stopped for a month we would still be busy. Sadly, it is true. Anyway, I haven’t magically lost another 50 pounds in the 4 weeks I have been a way. D*mn! I wish! I’m at 38 or 39 pounds. It would have been more but two weeks ago I did a four day and four pound gain trip to New Orleans. Didn’t eat it on – how sad is that? Actually, couldn’t eat much there. Not a vegetarian town but oh my goodness did I get my drink on! It was a girl trip – celebrating the upcoming wedding of my best friend – lush event. I’m not a drinker but those drinks there are yummy and who cannot dance and drink at the same time! I know! I know! Excuses! Excuses. I lost all of it and two more pounds in a week but I had to work it! I felt bad though! Thank goodness I only visit there once a year! I had my first fill on the 26th of August and it was piece of cake. I was worried for nothing. Doctor showed me exactly where my port was and felt it for the first time. Strange! I have my second fill next week on the 30th. I definitely feel restriction but am ready for the next one. Oh and my significant other and I joined 24 hour fitness. I’m working through my own head and self-esteem issues about being a fat girl at the gym. I’m doing it though! That’s my update. You all have to leave a note and let me know how you are doing. I love to hear about you all – even if I am horrid at updating. I’ll try to post some pictures after my BFF gets married. She is Indian and we are all wearing sarees. I’m her Goddess of Honor! LOVE it! And of course, I’m sending lots of love and good energy to you all too! Hugs, Elizabeth

    Major (Re-) lifestyle change

I have never gone vegetarian, so I don't know a lot about this way of eating. I also don't know how much Protein you are suppose to eat on your plan. However I know mine is 80 to 100. II am wondering how you would be getting that much protein eating vegetarian only. I would imagine you wouldn't have any energy and your hair would start to fall out. Could you please explain how a vegetarian diet with a VSG works.

    My Lapband Surgery Journey

So, 3 days post op for me. Weight fluctuating between 335-340 lbs. Still walking to get this co2 out of my core. Still living off OptiFast. Not much of an appetite for food since week 2 of my liquid diet. Feeling a little different about food altogether. I'm thinking about going vegetarian after this. I most definitely will not go back to eating all the foods that made me this way. I know the days will continue to go by, I just feel like I want to fast forward to a year from now so I can see more results. I've lost 57 lbs since the beginning of my journey, 30 lbs in the past 2 weeks. Cant wait for my first fill.
  23. I really like what Endless says about freeing ourselves from the burden of dieting. I've been dieting for darn near 40 years (since age 13), and, to be very frank, I'm sick of that sh@! I'm spending my recovery weeks educating myself about 1. healthy, high-Protein foods, 2. new products/foods that I may not be familiar with, but that others find very useful, and 3. EASY recipes that will work for both my wife (a vegetarian) and me -- a base to which I can add meat and she can add a meat alternative. I figure, if I choose, buy, stock, have on-hand, and prepare the right foods, the SLEEVE will take care of the rest.

    Waiting, waiting, waiting

Hi, I'm vegetarian so I use soy protein. Spirutein is yum and has tons of flavors. I ordered a sample pack in advance and tried them out. I use a soy protein by Optimum Nutrition. It has no sugar and i like it mixed with water. It mixes very easily.
  25. The decision realy has to be our own. I went through hell just prior to wondering if I should, would I fail, what would happen if people found out etc. I know my decision in all of this was right for me - but I only know that now. I've been having a tough time of the holidays, but I still know it would be worse without my band. I am a vegetarian, so it may not be that helfpul to you to tel you about my food. I eat no flesh of any kind, so no "stuck" or "PB'ing there You can defeat the band by eating cr@p - Cookies, fast food, high calorie drinks & shakes - easy easy to do. So IMHO the first thing to pledge yourself, is to stop with the fries, burgers and fast food and sodas. That's a truck load of calories. I am eating virtually my pre-op diet, but soooo much healthier
