    Liquid Stage Recipes

Hodge-Podge Soup 2 medium tomatoes 1 medium carrot Handful (about 10) of green Beans 1/4 onion, chopped I pkt instant soup Pinch flavour enhancer 2 dessert spoons of Protein powder 1 tsp oil 1 tsp butter Salt & pepper Method Chop all veggies. Melt butter and oil in saucepan and when starting to sizzle, add onion salt and pepper. Cook until you get 'cooked onion' smell, then add tomatoes. Cook for a few minutes, stirring often, then add rest of veggies and fill saucepan about half way with Water. Add soup mix and flavour enhancer. Allow to simmer 30 minutes then remove from heat. Let cool a few minutes then blitz in blender and add Protein Powder at this stage. Blitz until smooth. Return to saucepan and add water to desired thickness. Put back into blender, then return to saucepan, straining through a sieve to remove any lumps. Heat and serve. I added a chicken instant soup mix, which gave it some 'body' and a slight chicken flavour, but if you want to keep it vegetarian, then just use a vegetable soup mix. The flavour enhancer I used is called Vegeta, but I don't know if its available outside Australia.

    Getting obsessed

Totally agree about the quality! I actually started growing my own veg and herbs a few weeks ago. I'm also planning on switching to being vegetarian in about a month's time. We will be able to get such a small amount in, compared to how it used to be, I plan to get as much good, living foods into me as possible - and definitely agree about quality over quantity!
  4. Protein is simple, it makes us feel full...so does overloading on carbs but once the carbs pass thru our bellies were hungry again. Since protein provides us so much nutritionally, brain and organ functions etc, we feel fuller longer. the whole trick here is to feel fuller, longer...lean protein does that the best, because while it fills you the same as a deep fried patty, it does it's job WITHOUT the fat and calories. I'm talking on a very basic level here, but I hope that helps you. I was a vegetarian until a few months ago, so i too had a VERY hard time coming to terms with eating all this protein and I understand. good luck!
  5. hi, my name is Harli and im looking to get control of my weight. im 27 years old, 280 pounds and a vegetarian. my mum was recently diagnosed with diabetes and a heart problem and she recently lost her father (my grandfather) to heart and lung issues. there is a history of obesity and diabetes in my family and i really dont want to end up going down that road although i know im not far from it. ive tried Alli, Atkins, Weight Watchers, generalized calorie counting and more and i really feel like ive run out of options. i have terrible knee problems. dislocations seem to be a common issue for my poor knees so working out is difficult and painful. ive done some research on the Lap Band and im hoping it will help me to reach my weight loss goals so that i can live a more active, happy lifestyle. but to be honest, all this talk of band slippage scares the heck out of me! is slippage really common??

Hi All just checking in. Still losing weight slowly, but still exercising. I'm going back to just eating mostly fish. I'm not going vegetarian but I am cutting back on red meat. I still eat chicken, for if I go to a resturant that doesn't have fish on the menu, I'll order some type of meat. I'm trying to incorporate soy products into my diet. This will take some doing for soy is such a bland product. I won't even say food. It's an acquired taste and texture. Especially since the person has already experienced eating meats. I agree that it'll take three to reach goal weight and to be maintaining it by that time. Some say you should reach your goal weight in 18mos - 24mos. That third year you should be maintaining it by that time. For next year my daughter graduates from high school and I want to be at my best. So, there is still time for us all to reach and to maintain our goal weight. I don't want to spend my retired years trying to lose weight. If there is a Bally's Fitness Center in your area, check them out. They have a one, two week pass to check out the gym. Also, a 30 day special at $19.99. Of course I'm look into the 30 day, for if I decide to join, I get a discount from my union. So, let's keep it moving and not give up.

    LIQUID DIETING - arrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhh

Well I don't think anyone is reading this blog but I figure that is OK .. it's somewhere to come and vent .. I love reading the other posts though and it's kinda cool to be ahead of some people now rather than before when I was pre surgery and completely new to this. It's now 10 days since I had surgery and I am still on a liquid diet as per instructions. I tried soup but I really dont like soup and so I am eating err drinking Sustagen which is kinda nice and Optifast and I have been sneaking a banana into that shake as it's 'anything you can drink with a straw' right and so I like having the banana. Having jelly and diet custard etc . I am not really that hungry and I have lost 29.4 pounds to date. Which feels good but also doesn't feel like I've made much change but then that's because I am morbidly obese not just fat. If I was a skinny minny I think 10 kilos would sure make a difference but now I find my rings fit better on my hands and some shirts I stopped wearing I can now button up and they look nice. So I guess it's small steps for now. I am a bit over the liquid diet but that can stop next Tuesday I think after I see my surgeon. I have tinned spadghetti all ready to squish up and have and I am not craving meat at all .. I was thinking of becoming a vegetarian just to avoid all the issues with trying to chew meat. I love fish and I could have eggs etc just no red meat perhaps? Thats what I am thinking anyway. Some days I have drunk a lot of my shake and it feels like I've overeaten so it IS a case of really watching what you consume. I was worried about the fill and how it feels but there is a great You Tube lady who posts under the name 'thebandinme' and she speaks about fills in one of her many videos and she's so upbeat and positive that I am no longer worried but actually see it like she does as a way to control and be in control of my health and what I eat. Good luck to anyone getting banded this week 10 days into it and for minimal pain, minimal discomfort and small adjustments to the way I eat it's really not been such a hard road as yet and I am hopeful it never will be

  11. So, I have Kaiser Permanente in Northern California and Southern California, I guess it's the same but just mentioning both because I found out they consider themselves two things for some reason. After being very overweight for at least 6 years and generally overweight for at least 12 years...and doing everything from working out daily to diets to Weight Watchers to voodoo (j/k but almost lol), I decided that the Lap Band is what I wanted to pursue as an option. WELL, Kaiser doesn't seem to like to pay for this procedure. Which is fine, it is a radical decision and wouldn't want anyone to just say, "OKAY fine we'll do it!" without asking any questions. But I kind of feel jerked around. I'm doing this nutrition/diet program, which is all well and good, but the dieticians actually were insinuating that I wasn't "fat" enough to get a lap band >.< I'm 5'5, 258ish pounds, 44.6 BMI....this is off the charts as far as morbidly obese and unhealthy >.< the fact that they'd tell me I had to be "fatter" in order to qualify to get help seemed 1. rude and 2. hurtful and totally invalidating my feelings that I need a little extra help after years of doing it on my own. I've never had an over eating problem and am vegetarian, mostly my problems are eating at the wrong times, such as right before I sleep, and my other health issues, among some of the problems: Multiple Sclerosis, hypertension and constant pain (probably a lot to do with being overweight as well as the MS). It kills me to think that because Kaiser are jerks about their extreme views of what is "fat" that they would just totally invalidate me and make me feel stupid for inquiring about other options. I've looked up before what qualifications make someone eligible for the procedure and heck I think I meet them. Am I wrong to question what this person is saying? That I'm not "fat" enough? Or even worse, that there's nothing wrong with me even though, clearly, by health standards, and by my increasing health problems due to obesity, that I should just not pursue it? I think more than likely they just don't want to pay for it and I have to be more aggressive, but it's a little depressing to think I have to "convince" them I need help.

    someone please help

Self Indulgence Vs. Self Kindness Self Indulgence is: -Continuing to do what is harmful to you after you realize it's harmful -Loathing yourself -Getting lost in fantasies about how great your life is going to be, while you continue doing the same old self-destructive things -Not asking for help when you need it -Breaking the commitments you have made to yourself. Self-Kindness is: -Calling a halt to doing what is harmful to you -Defending yourself against anyone who attacks you -including yourself -Telling the truth -Asking for help -Resting when you need rest -Believing that there is a good reason for what you are doing, even if you aren't aware of it at the moment The only way to learn the difference between self-indulgence and self-kindness is to experience what self-kindness feels like. Ultimately YOU are responsible for what goes into your mouth. McDonald's has healthier options than two quarter pounders. You can't blame your friends for that. Have you ever asked them if you can go somewhere healthier to eat? Try sushi, try vegetarian, go to funky in-vogue "green" restaurants. And then MAKE GOOD CHOICES. You do sound like you thought the band would just stop you from eating. Only you can do that. Give yourself credit. 20 pounds is a lot of weight to lose. I walked around for a LONG TIME only needing to lose 20 pounds and could not bring myself to do it. 20 pounds matters. Get out and walk. It is a beautiful time of year to be out of doors. Practice thin behaviors now. Don't wait until you are thin. Ask yourself what you would do at McDonald's if you were the "you" you picture in your head at the end of this weight loss journey and make the choices THAT girl would make. When sitting home watching TV or listening to music catch yourself and ask how long if you were thin you would envision just sitting there, stay for that amount of time and then go do whatever the "thin" you would be up to. It isn't going to just happen sweetheart. Realign your thinking. You hold ALL the power here. That is the good news. Nothing can happen to you without your permission in regards to your weight.
  13. LOL It's funny to me, I have to remember to be afraid. Being a vegetarian for a few years and then eating meat again it's one of those things -you know- you put on a mental backburner. I always thought red meat was the worst culprit, and I do not eat red meat. But I forget how they can pack all the meat full of stuff!

Hey Guys! I am happy to report I am 7 days post op and starting to feel a lot better! I am so happy that I am feeling better. Thanks for being so sweet. I had a long week, actually! I am supposed to start soft foods today :smile2: My DB and I are going out tonight to Taco Bell for vegetarian refried beans, yum! lol Anne, that date is coming up QUICK how exciting!!! Yes just focus on my team beating others (woot woot) I won't say who it is though  Veejay, we were banded on the same day, how are you feeling? Karen - do you mind me asking your BMI? 23 pounds is amazing, how long was your preop diet? My doctor only requires a 24 hour one so I didn't lose squat before surgery, but that's ok! Every doctor is different and I'm not even going to WORRY about it until my first fill so I can put all my positive energy toward healing. Penny, what's fitday and extrapunds? I hope everyone has a great weekend! Monday i'll be back to bug everyone about what kind of pureed meat I should be eating *puke*!
  15. Ok I see now. I kinda forgot about the white carbs, even though I threw out all my bread a month before surgery so I wouldn't gain. Personally, I can say that I 100% KNOW I gained most my weight from carbs. This is sad, because I became a vegetarian right before my weight really spiked. And it's a very common misconception that veggies are thin. (Most the ones I know are actually overweight). I loved it, I did it for 2 years, and I did it for almost 100% ethical reasons (It sure wasn't for health cause all I did was eat cheese sticks, Pasta and bread! lol) Since I didn't learn to cook healthy, low carb Protein sources like Beans as a vegetarian, I packed on the weight like crazy and I didn't know why until I looked into banding and realized I was a carb maniac. My favorite food was to order a stuffed crust pizza and justeat the crust and let everyone else have the pizza, lol! I could've been a healthy vegetarian, but since it came down to me eating out almost every meal, it just put another large stepping stone in my already difficult journey to maintaining a healthy weight. Anyway, thanks for reminding me there's white carbs in it. I have a feeling a lot of our surgeon's are pretty fond of a high protein, low carb diet post op and forever after...I don't think I've talked to anyone on here yet who's surgeon has them eating differently. But wouldn't mind hearing from someone if they are reading this and their diet is different? Have a good day guys!
  16. MacMadame - Do a lot of people get stuck on tortillas? Is there a better tortilla to try that doesn't stick since it is technically a bread? Do some people just don't even mess with any tortillas since they don't mess with bread at all? Aubrie - Where do you get this cajun and buffalo flavored meat? Sounds so good. Donna and Jachut, don't a lot of things have preservatives in them? I was a vegetarian until recently, so I have trouble understanding which meats have preservatives in them and which don't. If you buy it at the deli counter, are their no preservatives? And if you start with lunch meat, isn't a lot of other meat like frozen chicken and fish full of preservatives too? I didn't know if it was very exclusive to lunch meat. Melolo- Do you or anyone else get stuck on Pita Bread?

    "last supper"

Well, tonight is IT! My last non-diet dinner where I will overeat as usual . I grilled hamburgers/veggies last night and made a chicken pot pie tonight (and a veggie one for my vegetarian dd). For lunch today, I went to my last Chinese buffet trip (why go to one and pay so much if I'm not eating much later???). Tomorrow, I see the surgeon for a pre-op appointment and start my pre-op diet. I'm as ready as I can be! I have some EAS protein drinks, broth, SF popsicles and fudgesicles, diet "flavored" green tea, and SF pudding and jello. I also have Benefiber at the recommendation of the dietician (I tried it today...can't taste it). Oh, and they suggest Tums (for calcium) and a daily vitamin which I'm adding to my pillbox. It's sad to be 40 and already have TWO pillboxes...one for morning, one for evening. Sigh. I'm ready to get this party started!

  19. Okay,, so I know this has been talked about repeatedly but I need to share with people who truly know where I am coming from.... The past two weeks my 7 siblings have been visiting from elsewhere at my dads who lives next to me.. We haven't all been together since "02" and were long overdue. We had a great time going to the fair, doing some work on my dads house, visiting and eating. I went out of my way to make food that was health friendly because we have a variety of eating issues amongst us,, vegetarian, chrons, heart disease, morbid obesity you name it one of us has had it. I am the official cook and love it, but wish I was good at anything but after seeing the family photos that were taken. I was mortified and it really has been devastating to me. I wish I could crop me out of all of them... The worst thing is there ended up being an open discussion about my pending Lap Band Surgery. I have talked with everyone about it except one sister because she worries and I don't want her to until I have a date... Most of them have been supportive, but totally uneducated and have no idea what its all about. One SIL had gone to a seminar and just can't imagine only eating a cup or less of food per meal for the rest of her life. Shes in her late 60's and is comfortable with herself. I on the other hand have two young children and a lot of years to look forward to,, if I get healthy!! I am working at losing right now and am struggling daily to stay on track. The nutrionist would like me to eat 1500 cals a day until 2 weeks before surgery, and I am sticking pretty close to that but it isn't easy. I am currently having some back issues and excercise is out of the question for at least the next few days. So,, after seeing these pictures with me looking soooo horrid I doubt anyone is going to question why I want to have lap band, and if they do I will email them to them. I don't even want to imagine what my husband is going to say, I hope he doesn't see them. With any luck I should have my surgery in November, hopefully before Thanksgiving so I don't have to cook,, we can do something else!! It seems the closer I get to surgery the more desperate I am to have it. I have certainly been in denial for a long time about myself and owning up is killing my spirit. I just keep telling myself that during this time of self realization I am gaining the strength and willpower I will need to succeed and lose all my weight.. I will not sit for another photo until the day before my surgery!!!

    Having a rough Time

I like the turkey meatballs that are ready to eat. I just put some marinara sauce on them and pop them in the micro for 1.5 minutes and I have an easy dinner. I also use the grocery store deli to get easy, ready to eat foods. Our deli has grilled chicken breast and veggies, very easy! They also have some vegetarian selections that are doable. What about Lean Cuisine? I just don't eat the rice or Pasta when I have them. They are not to bad and very easy to pop in the micro and have a quick meal. You can keep them in the freezer and it gives you a quick easy option that is good for you. Keep working at it - it does take time to make these changes. It is a challenge that you have to face each day, there will be some bad choices along the way, but just make sure you look ahead to the positive outcome and make a better choice the next time! You can do this!

    Kaiser Permanente Insurance

Hi Riley! I don't know about the way you're having to do it. Seems different in a small way for all of us. I saw my PCP, he sent me to seminar and then I started a 20 session class. We were weighed at seminar and that was our starting weight. I can't see it being much different for you. That's when you start working on your 10%. Don't start before they weigh you! Search on here for vegetarians. I know there are a lot on here. I'm pretty sure I've seen threads for it. You should be okay as long as your getting your protein in. My classes were all about teaching us all over again, how to eat, count calories, etc. In my area they put you on a 1200 calories a day diabetic diet. We had to work to get down to the 1200 throughout the class and they weighed us each class and that's how they tracked how we were doing. Best wishes!

August Banders - What are you eating?

I am having a bit of a hard time figuring out what to eat! I need to find a really good cookbook to help me out. This is what I had yesterday: 1/4 cup egg beaters 1 oz low fat cheese 3 oz sea bass, 1/4 c veggies 1/4 - 1/2 cup pudding that I made with milk (helps increase protein) 1/4 cup vegetarian baked Beans, 1/4 cup canned chicken with LF miracle whip 1/4 cup hummus with cukes I think this works out to be less than 1000 calories. I also did work out as well and based on my monitor, I burned about 500 calories, so I did pretty well! Gilta
  24. Hi all, As I'm trying to limit my intake (pre-fill and post-vacation-with-overeating), I was curious what the typical August bander is eating these days. Most of us are in regular foods now, I think. Would you share a typical day of eating? Me today: Breakfast - Yogurt 4oz., cheese stick, Mott's pomegranate sauce (little container) lunch - Vegetarian chili, 1 cup; sugar-free Jello pudding cup Snack - SF Jello pudding cup, 5 cashews dinner - Tuna casserole, 1 cup Total calories today: 950 or so I know I'm still eating too much at a sitting (like at lunch). Some of this is definitely not hunger eating!

hi ladies! how is everyone? ok here. battling some food demons. i haven't been bad, still keeping to the foods on my list, i am on the start of my 4th week out. BUT I am a little bit more hungry, so instead of eating 4 oz I am putting in about 8 oz. It is all healthy foods, vegetarian, but i feel so guilty, AND I have not lost anymore weight from the 15 pounds. I am so confused, when do I weigh myself? in the morning when I get up? without clothes? with pajamas? naked? Oh goodness, I am going crazy!!! Oh, and if anyone in NJ is interested, my dr's office is having their support group October 1, 7 p.m. in Plainsboro, NJ. email if you need directions.
