  1. I didn't progress through any of my food stages early. Even though I "felt" fine, who knows what was really going on on the inside. It wasn't worth risking my healing or causing a leak just so I could chew food one day sooner, you know? I actually never once pureed anything during my pureed phase. I drank my Protein shakes, had strained cream soups a LOT, and used the recipes on Shelly's page (mostly the baked ricotta) here: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html I did a lot of cottage cheese and yogurt. And once I was allowed soft foods, a lot of scrambled eggs and soft cheeses.
  2. Hello Sleevers! This is kind of a two part post! I have another week on liquids but I was curious if any of you guys decided to move onto the puree phase a day or two early. I don't know if I will try or not but I've been pretty good with Jello and cream Soups. I may try and if it doesn't go well then I'll go back to jello for a couple more days. I'm struggling with getting Protein big time so I'm looking forward to being able to have more options. My second curiosity is what you guys made and ate during your puree phase and if you blended everything or just chewed extra well. Also, if you did a different phase earlier I would like to know about that as well My curiosity always gets the best of me.
  3. Today was my first official Wednesday home weigh-in since revisiting my surgeon's office. My weekly goal is to lose two pounds each week. I identified my starting weight as 242; this week, I'm down six pounds and the scale is rewarding me with a weight of 236.4. Ordinarily, I would be ecstatic about a six-pound loss. However, I plan on keeping my excitement in check until I'm at or below my last known weight in January 2007 (224lbs) before I started slowly putting the weight back on. The thing is, I've been in the game long enough to know that you always have to ask yourself, "Six pounds of what -- water, fat or muscle?" I can't answer that question, but I can I do my part to work with my band and not against my band. So, I ensured that I drank at least the recommended amount of water and switched to Propel when I got tired of water, exercised at the gym, which included using the elliptical for 45 minutes to 1 hour and performing my standard series of weight training exercises, stuck very closely to the prescribed eating order of protein, vegetables and fruit, skipped meals when I wasn't hungry and last, but not least -- journaled to ensure a written record of my journey.

People often fall off the wagon. The trick to success with your band is that you are determined enough to get back on the wagon. So you messed up one day. OK. Next day starts back 'doing the right thing'. If you totally shuck your doctors orders, you may surely pay for that in lack of weight loss or band complications. If you are really serious about wanting to lose weight, you will have to make the changes necessary to allow the band to work for you. This includes a 6 week healing phase to allow you stomach NOT to grind and churn to digest harder foods. A gradual return to solids including hard Proteins, not soft foods that allow more calories to slide by your band, exercise at least 30 minutes 3/5 days a week and Water, water, water. Please be kind to yourself and your band. The stomach 'growlies' are inevitable, but don't necessarily mean you are starving. Pretty soon, they subside and you can get your mind on other things, like riding a bike or shopping for hours because you've lost enough that you can walk for hours. Getting your head in the right place is tough, we can all agree with that, but it will come, if you meet it halfway! Good luck to you!
  5. Woohoo! Another pound! Go you! I'm still working on getting my head in the right place so I can get my 10% lost. I'm down 9 lbs, but have 18 to go... I would have loved to go, but my Options classes are Thursday nights and the next make-up for week 6 isn't until AFTER this class is over. No, not going to miss it. I might try for the Riverside seminar next week, or do a make-up for week 11 next week and go in September. I'm thinking I'll just hoof it on over to Riverside which means I have to leave my house at like 2ish so I can avoid the heaviest traffic. I figure the sooner I can get this prelim stuff done, the better. Did they give info on the pre-op and post-op diet plans that they use? I'm not loving the Protein shakes so much and I see people having to do 2-3 week pre-op and post op liquid diets - YUCK! Oh, one more thing. How long did it last?
  6. Week 30 Last week’s weight – 194.6 This week’s weight – 193.6 Total weight lost this week – 1 Beginning weight – 246 lbs Total weight loss since surgery – 52.4 lbs Surprised I lost 1 lb this week mainly because I had one of those “I’m tired of constantly thinking about what goes in mouth” week and pretty much said “the heck with it!” I ate poorly the majority of the week. Maybe that shocked my system?!?! Who knows. I did A LOT of medicine ball squats at Crossfit and someone told me that a good leg workout burns more calories than any other muscle group in the body. Maybe that contributed to my loss this week? Whatever…I will take it. Bottom line is I am getting closer to getting out of the 190’s. It definitely feels like a slow process to get out of there though. I have semi shelved the vitamix idea (unless I happen to come across one that is priced really really well). I did come to the realization that week that I am officially not a huge fan of vanilla protein powder. I bought a tub from Unjury and I’m not loving it. In their defense I didn’t like the slimfast vanilla protein drink either. I made a drink the other day with oj, vanilla protein powder, and frozen berries and I am thankful I looked in the mirror before I left for school because I had seeds from the berries all over my teeth from drinking it. I do like their chocolate splendor and strawberry sorbet and I usually drink two a day (for a total of 40 grams of protein). I still avoid soda but I have indulged here and there. I drink it very slowly and I never can finish one. There isn’t one particular food I avoid because it bothers my pouch. I can pretty much eat anything at this point but in smaller amounts. I don’t experience hunger like I did prepouch which is AWESOME. I’m becoming ambivalent about food and don’t feel the need to eat until I am stuffed. At week 30 I am still very glad I had the procedure done!

    Feeling Hungry

I totally get you . I'm trying to get down my protein, that seems to help. 60 to 80 grams a day!
  8. Ashley, The best thing I found for the liquid was the unjury chx soup. On soft foods I bought a magic bullet from target (like $50) and anything my family ate I was allowed to eat as long at it was in bullet for 30-45 seconds. It looks like poop, but it doesn't taste too bad. You should be on liquid for a week or so..then puree for about 3 weeks. Scrambled eggs were good during puree just make sure not to cook them too much. Also I ordered the unjury cheese sauce and put it on stuff like mashed taters, eggs. It is very important to keep your protein up (60-80) and liquids (try to shoot for 64 oz). I am on soft right now and I am able to eat anything that I can mash with fork, so stuff like meatloaf that is soft, chicken breast in a slow cooker with a couple cans of cream of chicken soup so its really soft, but you can't/shouldn't have chicken that is grilled. Tuna fish/salad also has been a staple. Ask you NUT they can give u some great ideas. GOOD LUCK

    Freshly Cut!

well my name is Crystal and this is day 4 post op after the the big surgey. I am having a hard time swallowing my full liquids. i keep having painful gas travel up my throat and then I let out a little burp then it feels better. its gotten a little better but definetly an adjustment. I feel hungry and then when the jello touches my mouth my appetite disapears. today is Thanksgiving and I'm ok with not eating. in 3 weeks I'll make a pureed turkey stew and add some flavorless protein powder to it. I can't believe that i had the surgery already the whole process from consultation to setting the date for surgery was 3 months. I must say my surgeon dr Marc Zare is amazing him and his asst Ben took great care of me. so whoever is doing their surgery in san jose ca dr Zare is awesome! its crazy how the day played out monday the 21st. went to check in the hospital and then got my iv and meds then I went to the operating table and woke up all done. just happend so fast. the first 2 days were hard because it took a long time for the anethsia to wear off and because of that I was nausous a lot. I didnt like being so out of it. then when I came down from the meds I focused on recovery. the gas pain was the first thing I wanted to tackle so I did what the dr and nurses said to do and walked every couple hours it really does help. the gas took a few days to go away too. I look forward to this new chapter in my life and hope that my tummy will feel better soon.I try not to take my pain meds unless I get uncomfortable which is recommended I hear since it can constipate. if anyone has reccomenations for yummy full liquids i'm open to ideas. i ordered pro cel so I can add it to my foods. one thing I have to work on now is eating slowly because when i get to solid foods or even now with liquids I can make myself sick and don't want that. well thats all for now.

Day 5 of pre-op diet. 25 more to go. I am so envious of all of you who didn't have to or won't have to do the pre-op for so long. But my surgeon is pretty strict about losing close to 10% total body weight. He said 25lbs for me. It's hard sometimes when my husband eats in front of me. It's also amazing now that I realize how many times a day I would just pop something in my mouth. Like when I am fixing my 15 month olds meals I usually take a bite here and there to make sure it's not too hot or that whatever it is tastes good. I also do that with cooking, putting away food, anytime I handle food. But I've stopped the misc bites and finger licking. Watching commercials can be difficult. I never realized just how many food commercials there are or how good they really make that food look. I've been trying to DVR everything I watch so I can skip the darn food commercials. I've started tracking the calories and protein I eat in a day. I first tried the website: mypyramid.gov but was unhappy with it. I found that slimfast's website has a free diet/nutrition tracker. I just have to delete the menu they come up with for me and put in what I actually eat. And if they don't have something you've eaten in their system you can add it and it will remember it (like the protein shake that I drink). They also have exercise trackers and a lot of other helpful tools all for free. Today I ate 1270 cals and rode my bike for 30min. Goodnight and goodluck to all.:car:
  11. Hello All, I am new to this forum, I'm 4 weeks out and I believe I've hit a stall. I'm currently on the soft food Stage and I'm finding it easier to hit my Protein and Calorie goals, Water is so-so. I'm looking to get some work-out MOTIVATION and recipe ideas, as well as give any advise or answer any questions that I can. .. P.S. the reason I say I think I've hit a stall is due to the fact that I don't weigh myself at home at all. I'm waiting to get weighed at the DR. Office. I never weighed myself at home pre-op. I'm a little OCD... Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

No Energy 3 weeks post sleeve surgery

I was told by my Nut, fitness chick, and the psych, that energy stores get depleated until we are able to get all of our nutritional needs met. The exhauation will pass. Keep on getting in your protein, and water!
  13. Hi Everyone, 1st time posting! I had sleeve surgery 1/07/15 and aside from a couple if blips everything went well. No nausea, very little pain, went thru 1 week of Clear liquids then a week of "full" liquids and now am on what I think are called "mushies". Anyway, while on liquids I was full of energy and feeling great. I returned to work on 1/21/15 and feel extremely drained and totally lacking in energy. I've been getting approximately 50-65 gr of Protein a day (combo of Protein shakes and actual food) and also trying to get in 64 oz of Water but not getting near that target yet. Any suggestions on what might be causing me to feel so awful? I feel achy all over and vague pain in my lower back. I wonder if I should have stayed on full liquids awhile longer, I felt really good then. Has this happened to anyone else? This newbie would love some advice! thanks so much!

    2 weeks in??

You'll be fine. I'm 2 weeks out today and feel great. And the first week was really hard for me... I wasn't one of those easy recovery type people. At two weeks you'll probably be on full liquids. You'll be eating a lot of Soups and Protein shakes! Pack some shakes with you!
  15. Let me start by saying ..never buy alot of Protein drinks because your stomach can change at any given time. I began with EAS Protein Drinks, and they were horrible...I am a picky eater and drinker so you know I get turned off easily. My stomach has become lactose intolerant now,,,go figure..so all the shakes have ended, t I went to GNC store and I decided to try certain juice products...I tries Isopure alpine punch, alot of good reviews, but to me it taste good at first then it leaves a bitter dry taste ,,,,yuckkkkk no more Cytomax protein Tropical drink bottled - excellent -my picky taste buds loved it. Now I USE TO Have a terrible sweet tooth, but this product seemed to sweet so I diluted it with Water and ICE...... YUMMMMMM..it has 40 grams of protein in a 20 oz ...here it is for all post op folks BIGGEST LOSER power to go packets.. - I got lemonade ..it was delicious .. but each to go packet as 6 grms per 4 oz serving of water, juice, or smoothie For all Picky Taste budders I hope this helps. Sheri
  16. Welcome! I know it's scary and yes it's a huge decision. It sounds like you have done a lot of work on yourself mentally and I think that's a major key to sucsess in this process. You are right, it's your decision who to tell and not tell about your surgery. I told one person, my mother, and that's it. If anyone asks how I am loosing the weight I just tell them I have committed to a high Protein, low carb lifestyle. When you come home after surgery you will be sore and on different stages of dietary restrictions....I don't see how you can keep that from your teenagers. I think they will notice, so in my opinion it might be a good idea to have a talk with them. You might be surprised at how happy they will be that you decided to become a fit, active and healthy mom. This was the best decision, my only regret is not having it done about 10 years ago. Keep coming to this forum, ask a lot of questions. You will do great!

    Liquids

You lose the most weight on clears. But yes, I hear you. Just please make sure you take it slow and follow dr's orders. I did and got a leak and an abscess..... even following orders. I was the freak 1 percent in nature that this happens to. I had to stay on clears for like 5 weeks I think it was. I ended up loving those durn Cytomax drinks and yes I post it everywhere trying to help ppl that are on clears and might be struggling with their Proteins..... Good luck ladies!

    Less frequent BMs?

I try to eat some form of fiber---whether it be fresh fruit---or cereal---and it has seemed to keep things working! I use the bite size shredded wheat as snack foods---it works 2 ways---provides the Fiber, and gives me something to crunch and munch!!!! But less in will definitely mean less out, especially if your diet is high in Protein, and low in bulky foods. It sounds gross----not sure if you have ever had to perform doggy duty----and be the pooper scooper----but the higher quality of food you feed the dog, the less cleaning you have to do! The lower quality bulk filler they put in low cost foods, increase the output. We work the same way!!! When we take in less, and it is mostly things the body can draw nutrients from, there is less to eliminate. We spent a lot of years filling ourselves with junk, and getting used to having to eliminate it regularly just to fit more in. There is no longer a problem with that! It is really hard not to make a tacky comment about this being a "crappy" or a shi^*y thread!!! LOL!!!! Just could NOT resist! Kat

    Got 'er done!

I feel so fortunate to have such an easy time. When I had the lapband twice the gas pains were almost unbearable and lasted through the flight home. Now, no pain or hunger just some small amt of soreness at incision sites. Been running around TJ with my remarkable coordinator, Trish! Today, after shopping, I'm going to treat myself to a Lil' Botox and mani & pedi and sip my protein next to the pool side. I have found that I must be bloated because my bra needs to be two hooks from normal and I'm not comfy in my jeans. I recommend bringing low cut jeans or yoga pants so not to interfere with belly button incision. I'm so happy.. I wish the best to everyone
  21. Today was my first day to start the Adkins diet. I have been instructed to eat this high Protein diet for 4 days and then go to Atkins shakes for 3 days. I had Breakfast around 0830 this morning and at 1030 my blood sugar had bottomed out to the 40s. I ate some lunch meat that I found, but i knew that was not going to be enough with my routine medications on board. So, I end up eating a fruit cup to get my blood sugar up. I guess going forward, I need to reduce my medications. I take 3 different medications. I guess, I am going to have to experiment with what to take. Have others had problems with their blood sugar and medications during the pre-op diet?

    Feeling Wimpy

Congrats on getting the surgery. I think it probably took me a good 6-8 weeks to have more energy, and I'm 48. I was definitely quite tired because I wasn't eating that much. Age may be a factor, but your activity level might be as well. You may also have a job where you're more sedentary, so again, not much activity. Try to walk around whenever possible, and drink those fluids. Are you sure you're getting all your Protein in, and not having too many calories? 1000 calories sounds like a lot 2 months out. I wanna say you should be closer to 650-800, tops, but we're all so different that you might require more. I think the best person to discuss this with would be your NUT. He/She should be able to help guide you better. Hang in there. It'll get better!

    Diarrhea

OMG I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! I've had weeks & weeks of relentless diarrhea. Can't be away from a bathroom. To make it to my 2week post op I had to not have any Protein shake that morning. I'm 5 weeks today. It's a bit better now that I'm using Fiber powder (Target brand since Benefiber is off the market). I'm trying 3 doses a day, and its helping. You can put it in anything, solid, liquid, hot, cold. Might be worth a try.
  25. I have been lurking around for some time now but decided I will join in and tell my story. I started looking into WLS a couple of years ago but at that time my insurance didn't cover it. In the fall my husband started a new job so a few months ago I called the insurance company and on the new insurance it is covered. I was so excited! I found a surgeon that I liked and went in for my exam and decided on the sleeve. I started my 3 month diet that was required for surgery and did a bunch of tests that were also required. Not too long ago I found out that my insurance had changed some of it's requirements. I had read on here about a lot of people who had gone to Mexico for the surgery. At first I thought (no offense) that all of you who went to Mexico were nuts! I kept reading about everyone's experience with Dr. Aceves and decided to give them a call to ask some questions. This was last week. I talked to Nina and there is a special going on if you have your surgery in May. With all of the excellent reviews I have read about Dr. Aceves I decided to talk to my husband about this and see if it was an option. He agreed that it would be fine for me to go ahead and have the surgery done with Dr. Aceves. My date is May 24th. Anyone else going to be there at that time?? This has all gone so quickly and I can't even believe it is really happening and I am so excited and a bit nervous at the same time. I am sure the nerves will kick in even more a few days before I leave. I keep thinking to myself that I can't wait to be me again. I never grew up heavy, in fact I was thin until I was in my 20's. I have been obese for over 15 years now and am looking forward to my new life that is right around the corner! I am sure I will have more questions and comment more as the days get closer but for now I just wanted to say "hi".
