High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
Fred in Pa replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oikos Pro yogurt. 20g of protein per cup. Vanilla and Peach are my favorites. Mix with fruit serving or a bit of granola for crunch. edited to add: I also have used the 3 ounce proteins shots. The taste isn’t so good but it’s only 3 ounces and gives you I believe 20 to 30 g of protein. -

One of my favorite high protein snacks are hard boiled deviled eggs. Just mix yolk with light mayo, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper. -

you guys are lucky. We were allowed to have 4-5 protein shakes a day, all the ultra-low-cal clear liquids we wanted, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, and 1 cup each of tomato juice/V8 and chicken broth. No solid food - at all. -
High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
Erin18 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey people! 4 months and 3 days post RNY. What meal and snack ideas can you give me that are high in protein? I'm still not hitting my goals and currently thinking about drinking protein, turns my stomach. This happened in the beginning aftrr surgery as well. Any good recipes? I know there are recipes on here somewhere, but what are your top high protein foods? I need to start planning my foods ahead again. How long did everyone's hair loss last? When I had lapband in 2009, my hair loss wasn't as bad as it is this time. My hair gets SO tangled! Probably because this time my hair is lightened and colored with fashion colors. But, when did the hair loss start to ease up for you? I feel like im overeating. I feel like I could have lost a lot more weight by now. If it's not overeating then it's high calorie foods. For example, I can eat almost a who bagel with a serving of cream cheese and a 1/2 to a cup of cherries for breakfast. A lot of the times I skip lunch because I eat whatever I have at breakfast at that time. Then if I have a snack yes I'll eat a junk food item like a serving of chips or a cheesestick and then at dinner I'd have the 3 ounce of chicken, with 1/2 cup veggies and spoonful (the ones you cook with) of rice. Of course I'd have regular BBQ sauce or chic fil a sauce (a serving) and a serving of butter on my rice. Then awhile later before I get in the shower I'll have one or two of the following; a popsicle, another serving of chips, popcorn, yogurt, ice cream sandwich (yep I shouldn't be eating this. No, it hasn't made me sick and no I don't have it often), a cheesestick, etc. Or sometimes I'd eat some cereal if I know it doesn't make me feel sick. When I write it out, it doesn't look like I'm overeating, but when I track it, it comes out to be around 1200 calories. I shouldn't stress, but I need to make better choices and maybe make schedule for water intake and food intake. PLEASE, no rude/mean replies. Please be helpful. I want to succeed, and right now I feel like I'm not gonna succeed eventhough I'm not gaining, I'm still slowly losing. Thanks for your time! -
Yes I have anxiety too....don't want to stretch my sleeve. Making sure I get my liquid & protein in. I don't want to mess this up.

I'm more worried about calories, protein, and liquid. I obsess over making my goals each day. It's getting to be a bit much. The thought of dumping also gives me a ton of anxiety.

I’m on day 6 of my liver shrinking diet. I actually thought it would be a lot harder. I’m just bored of my selection of food. I do 2 protein shakes a day and one meal. Usually 5 oz of lean meat (chicken, shrimp, salmon) and a cup of veggies. No butter. I did make a home made cabbage and other veggie soup to “snack” on here and there and count that as my veggies. I’m just getting really bored of the food. Anyone have any suggestions or meals to make it a bit more bearable? I have 2 more weeks. Surgery date is July 10.

Liquid Phase, pre and post op

I like the Premier protein flavored water (they have peach and tropical punch). I also love the vegetable bone broth (chicken, too) and I add bouillon paste to it for deeper flavor. I like the blue protein gatorade and I like the immunity booster Propel water in mango, pineapple peach, strawberry kiwi, watermelon, and black cherry. If you're really desperate for hydration and you've already met your protein goals, get some plain water and add sugar free kool-aid or IV hydration or something like that to it. Different flavors, no sugar, and still getting your water in. -

I Am Not Really Seeing The Weight Loss I Was Expecting
TRAVELRN replied to Hey Man's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can only speak for myself. That being said I’m in the US and I had to go on a “diet” before my surgery to yes decrease the size of liver. I had to stop stepping on the scale as it will drive you batty. Focus on your meal plan. 3 weeks is short period of time and it’s not expected to drop off that fast. Weight loss is only one goal. Water is one of your goals, and meeting your calorie and protein numbers is another. Your comments are kind of unusual for someone 3 weeks out tho. Usually it’s about other things, nausea, not feeling hungry…etc. if you’re skipping eating that will effect your weight loss. If you follow your meal plan to the letter you will see the difference. You didn’t really mention what stage of your meal plan you are on now (liquids, soft, purée). Best of luck. -

This is what is happening to me. I discussed it in my support group, they said it is normal. They called it a 3 week stall. Said it is very common. 14 lost pre surgery and 8 post surgery. They all said to keep doing what I’m doing and focus on getting in all the required vitamins, protein, and water, and WALK. -
Questions about DS, talking myself out of it
Arabesque replied to boat 4 fun's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having surgery doesn’t mean you can’t manage your eating & drinking or it will be too hard to do. It’s more that it may be different to how you used to do things & you just need to establish new routines & habits. A lot of our old habits did us no favours anyway so they are no loss. Vitamins morning & night. Many people take a packed lunch to work. Pack your meals & snacks in a small ice bag & take it with you from vehicle to vehicle. Make sure you always have your fluids with you & sip, sip, sip. Pop everything you may need in a back pack or similar so it’s easy to grab & go. Be organised & allow for the unexpected. My family are on the land too & always take a large water bottle, a thermos of hot water & a packed lunch &/or snacks with them if they aren’t going to be near home. They haven’t had surgery but it’s their routine so it’s not impossible to do. Benefits of the surgery (loss of appetite, the staged return to eating, possible temporary changes to taste &/or smell, boosted metabolism) give you time to evaluate your old eating habits & try new more nutritious foods & cooking methods. Remember also the most restricted eating period after surgery is only usually about 6 weeks not forever. Therapy can also be very beneficial too. Helping you understand your relationship with food, what was behind your eating habits, cravings, etc. Doing the head work is essential. And sometimes realising something as serious as surgery is your only option to improve your health & life is the best motivation to make changes. -
Hi!! I will be having the SADI-S surgery, should be July 2023. I get my exact date next week! I am purchasing the items I will need for the 2 week liver shrinking diet pre-op, as well as the liquid 4 weeks post op. I would really appreciate it if you could list the clear liquids you drank that you loved!!! So far, I love Unjury chicken soup. But I can't stand anything in the liquid protein sampler. *Liquicel- maybe I don't know what to mix it with!! The grape and unflavored gagged me. *Nectar powder-crystal sky. *The little protein shots, pink lemonaMr. Please help!!! I can't waste any more money. Nicole

Protein water is another option too. Watch the protein bars as many are just glorified candy. -
Gastric Sleeve 6/15/23 and now lactose intolerant
BabySpoons replied to JenniferLilly36549's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a BIG milk lover and my dairy based protein shakes upset my stomach quite a few times the first couple weeks after surgery. I noticed though that I was able to eat other dairy products with no problem. Also, some do have trouble with air bubbles causing gas, etc. from blending their drinks. I continued drinking milk despite the random bouts of running to the bathroom. Thankfully mine wasn't lactose intolerance. Just a fussy tummy. It eventually got better and became a non-issue. -
Questions about DS, talking myself out of it
Smanky replied to boat 4 fun's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We've all been here, and we've all proven just how unsuccessful that route is. None of us would have had WLS if if it were as easy as just complying with the pre-surgery program - it's too restrictive and meant to be temporary. When you're not mentally ready for a change like this, your head is absolutely going to be throwing up every reason not to do it, so I'd consider seeing a bariatric therapist to help you before starting the program. As for on-the-go nutrition, there's nothing wrong with taking a packed lunch, or indeed a fanny-pack of nutritious snacks. I take a handful of small apples and individual high-protein yoghurts with me to work, which I snack on whenever I get a second (my second job, which is a cook in a cafe with barely a break over a day's shift - so I'm surrounded by food I shouldn't and don't touch - hence my little pile of apples). And as Tomo said - vitamin supplements are essential, for both bypass and DS, though I think DS requires more. But it's just a matter of adding it to your daily routine. I take mine every evening before bed. -

I, too, go on phases with food. Sometimes it lasts for months and even years lol. I am on a natto (fermented beans) kick right now. I had it with nori (dried seasoned seaweed), 28g kimchi, and 11g sweet potato airpopped crackers. Total 158 calories, 6g fat, 15g carb, 9g protein. -
Questions about DS, talking myself out of it
boat 4 fun posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have taken two of my three classes and I think I have more questions than answers. My first thought sitting through these classes is "If I could comply with all of these nutrition requirements and restrictions, I don't think I would need surgery". I am scared that I am going to make my life miserable by altering my digestive tract and then not being able to stick to the diet and causing all sorts of problems. My other issue is that I do not have an office job. I am outdoors, mobile, and never know which direction I will need to go. The other day it occurred to me that I drove 4 different vehicles before lunch. I don't know how I would be able to keep up with vitamins and supplements short of a fanny pack. Also, I had to drive the other day for 8 hours in a remote area and there was no food option available (I was on a tractor). The last thing I need is to pass out behind the wheel. Am I over-thinking, or are these legitimate concerns? I have all but talked myself out of this procedure -
You couldn't make this any harder if you tried. Poor you. Yes I was so weak, I never met my protein goals for months. Just eat what you can, when you can. Take nana naps, you will feel so much better. Leave as much of the mundane until later on down the road. I had wicked diarrhoea from the moment I woke from my surgery. Anaesthetic has that effect on some of us. Others get it because they can not stomach some types of protein in the shakes or become lactose intolerant. Call your team if you are in anyway worried but the early weeks are rough.

So I had my post-op nurse check yesterday. But I also have a broken foot and the other one swelled up and painful to the touch and intense pain when I bear weight on it. It took a lot of effort to get from my car in the parking lot to the clinic office. I had taken alot of acetaminophen that prior 12 hours and no sleep cause of the foot pain. By the time I made it back to the car I was so weak and tired, probably should not of been behind the wheel. I got home, and went to bed immediately. From 10 am to 4am this morning, I thought I was close to death. I was so weak, my stomach hurts so so bad. It's gross but anal leakage. I could not eat or drink and protein. Anyone else experienced this at all? I'm still weak and tired this morning but my stomach is fine.

How long is a protein supplement needed
LindsayT replied to LindsayT's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
The protein shots are much better than the shakes. I tried a couple bars and didn't like them. As long as I supplements, I make my goals. I need to figure out breakfast and a morning snack. I think that would help me get off one of the protein drinks. The problem becomes, I can't eat a whole pot of yogurt yet, so it seems silly to waste.the room when I can do the drink so much.easier and then go straight into my fluids in the morning. -
Hi @LibrarianErin I work for an American company and have some US based family and friends so I am well aware of the 4th July. I told my boos (American) that I was having my own freedom day on the 4th I had my pre-op consultation yesterday at the hospital with the anesthetist and floor nurse. Lots of questions for me, an EGC and blood test. I asked if there was anything to do in advance food and drink wise and they said no, just fasting from the night before when I arrive to the hospital. When I said I had given up alcohol three weeks ago they said that was a "good idea" and when I then said that as of the start of this week I had switched to decaf they asked me why I would do that, there was no need!! I explained I had read online a lot where it said not to have caffeine before or after surgery, the nurse laughed and said one of the things they give as a liquid after the op is a coffee. I didn't even tell them that I had started my own version of a liquid diet for the two weeks lead up. Protein shake for breakfast and one for lunch or dinner and then a meal for the other. I am trying to reduce my portion sizes and eat slower but it is really hard. I think that is what I worry about most, being able to slow down and be more mindful. I also love to drink - water, coffee, alcohol etc. - and not sure how I will cope with tiny sips. It is very hot here, in mid to high 80s which is too much for me and I am gulping back the water non-stop. What I didn't like to hear was that I have to shave from under my breasts to top of my things including pubic area. I am not sure I have seen there in years or can easily reach down there The pain of surgery might be one thing but the pain of regrowth elsewhere could be worse for longer, not looking forward to that.

How long is a protein supplement needed
CarolineLittle replied to LindsayT's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
It's definitely a struggle! I'll plan out my day in MyFitnessPal and it looks great, but the reality is I can't actually eat it all, there's just no room. So I end up having to remove stuff and don't end up meeting my protein goal. I'm managing 50 to 60 grams on average but my dietician wants me on 80. I guess we just have to do the best we can and not be too hard on ourselves, it'sstill early days for us May babies. I can't do shakes but have stocked up on protein bars now. -
How long is a protein supplement needed
Arabesque replied to LindsayT's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I stopped shakes from purée which was always my intention & they tasted awful. My surgeon & dietician were also a bit freer with hitting protein goals at first - as long as I was close & making an effort to get closer they were happy. But it is hard when you are eating so little. To help with my protein I found a high protein yoghurt (20g) & yoghurt drink (30g & which counted as a fluid too). I had them in the afternoon & ate/drank them over an hour or so. (You can make your own yoghurt drink by blending your yogurt with milk.) I also often ate meals that were protein only some of which was because once I ate my protein I couldn’t eat anything else. I also made my scrambled eggs with milk & made them runnier & the same with rolled oats (made on milk & extra runny).
