    Anyone for October 2020?

I had my surgery in the end of October 2020- I’ve lost 100 pounds or so. I’m a size 8ish now- I would like to lose maybe 10-15 more pounds ideally - but I am in the very top of my healthy BMI range and feeling better all the time. My weight loss really slowed down after the first 6 months - but I’m still losing 4-6 pounds each month and I figure I’ll just keep chipping away at it. I have been getting rid of clothing that are too big this week but I’m having a hard time letting go of things- what if I gain weight again! All of this is hard. My mind hasn’t really caught up yet.
  4. Hi everyone! I hope you are all doing well. My RNY was on the 12th of july so I'm 18 days out (or 2,5 weeks). I'm almost afraid to say it but everything has been going fine and I almost feel like a freak of nature reading these boards. I started eating purees after 10 days, as my program describes, and can easily eat a meal of 50gram fish/meat (1.7 ounces) + 30 gram mashed potatoes (1 ounce) + 50 gram apple sauce (also 1.7 ounces). These are my nutritionist's guidelines, but it feels like I'm eating a lot compared to fellow 2-weekers. Is anyone else feeling okay after sugery without complaints and eating just fine?? Anyone for October 2020?

Had my surgery in October 2020. Ilost 73 lbs in the first 7 months and now my weight loss is starting to taper off. I only lost 11 lbs in the last 3 lbs and I am wearinga size 12 but I would like to settle in at wearing a size 10. Have a complicated surgey coming up on August 16 so this might be the reason I feel stuck. I'll see howq it goes after my upcoming surgery/

    August 10! So close 😄🌈
  8. The truth is the average weight loss at three to five years is about 65% of the weight you have to lose (that is the weight that puts you in the healthy BMI range - higher end if you are a larger frame, lower if you’ve a smaller frame). Your surgeon may have given you a goal weight of where you may end up at based on these averages. Better to under promise & over deliver thinking. Some medical teams discuss where you’d like to be. Mine did. Mine was based on the lowest weight I could always get down to before gaining again which was on the upper end of the BMI range (cause I thought I had a larger frame - turns out I don’t). It was deemed a reasonable, healthy & attainable goal based upon my history. I know many people poo poo BMI but look at it as a guide, not a hard & fast rule. Amend it based on your body type, frame, muscle mass, etc. Plus you know how your body works & functions best - it may be at a higher or lower weight. You know you functioned well at a lower weight when lifting so that may be somewhere for you to aim as against what your surgeon suggested. I’ve lost way more than my goal & have been working at maintaining it for about 10 months - so I’ve got a long way to go. Looking at my stats, you may expect me to be bony but I’m not. But that’s me. Someone with a different body shape & frame may be very bony at the same BMI. As long as the weight you reach is healthy & sustainable everything is great. The surgery will rest your basal metabolic rate & that will dictate how much weight you lose too. This video by Dr Matt Weiner may be helpful. He has a lot on this topic. Good luck.
  9. Thanks! Everyone is different so it's really hard to say. A friend of mine was well over 600lbs about 10 years ago when he had the surgery. He dropped down to about 375lbs. That was nearly half his body weight. He has gone up a bit since then because he hasn't followed the lifestyle changes the way he should have. But even still he is only maybe 450 now. Still probably 150-20bs less than what he was. I think maybe how much you lose not only depends on how dedicated you are but also how big you were. At 370 and 6' I don't think 255 is at all unrealistic. At 470 and 6'4 I'm hoping for 285 which would be much more than 30% but I think that would be my goal weight. I'd still be the size of a wwf wrestler. I've seen other guys my height who weighed between 215-235lbs and some of them look really good and really fit. I personally couldn't see myself at that size, I'm so used to seeing a bear in the mirror. But I would be a little disappointed if I only lost 120lbs after everything I just went through. Would it be better than nothing? Sure, but still much bigger than I hope to be.
  10. Are either of you diabetic? Because diabetes or undiagnosed diabetes rather can cause dehydration. Blood sugar levels could be the result of having such a dry mouth aka lack of saliva. I went through a bout about 3 months before surgery where out of nowhere I was really dehydrated. In the sense my mouth was really dry and no matter how much I drank it didn't feel like I could keep saliva in my mouth. I got an infection and ended up at the clinic and the doctor just randomly decided to test my blood sugar levels. I was at 26.8 on the meter. So newly diagnosed diabetic type 2 after some blood tests. My mouth seemed to have been less dry and I wasn't drinking 10 cups a water a day and peeing 8 times a day the month before surgery. But since being post-op the past week my mouth is back to being dry again. Much like you I find it's worse at night and had the same idea. Maybe I'm sleeping with my mouth open. My blood sugar levels are still high for a normal human ranging from 8-10.5. So I have no idea if it's the diabetes or the surgery or a little of both. I do know the dry mouth makes my teeth feel sticky sometimes when I press my tongue against them. The top of my mouth feels strange too when it happens and I feel like my taste is off. It could be all psychological but it's very frustrating knowing something should taste good normally but as I'm drinking it its off or just kinda blah.
  11. So my insurance apparently is run by people who've had bariatric surgery, because the only prerequisites are a surgeon consult, a nutrition class, a psych eval, one support group session, a letter of recommendation from my PCP, and about thirty pages of forms to fill out between all of them. There's no medically supervised diet, no long run-up, no "prove you can do this by losing N pounds in M weeks". Super easy, and I'm done with my prereqs in two weeks flat, so now the insurance coordinator will go approach the insurance for authorization and after they get that, surgery is 3-4 weeks away. But here's my dilemma: I haven't had much "individual" time. The nutrition class was 10 people, the support group like 50 people, and the psych eval was literally 22 minutes long. The surgeon consult was 15 minutes long. Everything was via Zoom. At some point, they're going to have to bring me in and weigh and measure me, right? Theoretically there's going to have to be a bunch of medical clearances? A nutritionist with whom I'll work? Someone to talk to me about my prescription medications? Someone to go specifically over my dietary requirements post- (and pre-!)surgery? I feel like there's about ten people I deal with, each of whom has some portion of responsibility for me, but nobody can answer the questions I have, and I feel like I need to go out and find my own nutritionist, my own psychiatrist, because it looks like it's just the surgeon. Am I overthinking this?
  12. Did you lose anything in the pre-op liquid diet? I lost about 15 and then like 10 the first week. After that it was 2 weeks before I lost anything. I called crying. They told me to just trust my body because it had just went through trauma. It is like what in the world did you just do to me?!? It will come off! Stay off google and don’t compare to other people. Stress can affect weight loss too. It gets easier!

    New scale - ugh

I feel your pain. I got a new fancy scale a couple of months after surgery. The new scale weighs me 6 pounds heavier than my old scale! I then went around the house and grabbed things to weigh, 10 pounds of flour, rice, etc. The new scale was right.....dang it!
  14. So I thought I would upgrade my scale - got a Withings smart scale to be able to track my weight/muscle mass/water weight, etc. I hopped on my old scale first and then the new one right after (I only weigh once a week to avoid any mind games) - and the new one is 1.8 lbs higher than the old (on the same flooring and all). I know it’s not a true “gain”, but especially at this point, 1.8 lbs is a lot and it’s depressing to see in Baritastic app that my weight went up a little. I’m so close to my initial goal (which I am thinking of adjusting down another 10 lbs) so it’s really tough. I know, it’s a one time uptick but still, I haven’t had it go in the wrong direction. I’m trying to console myself with the fact that I lost another 4 inches overall from last month’s measurements, but I still hate seeing that gain in the app. I try to keep telling myself all the right things - your weight can fluctuate, it’s not a real gain, etc., but needed to vent and I have no one to vent to here, other than my puppies, and they don’t care, lol.
  15. I started feeling fine when I hit around 160, but I didn't consciously try to stop because I'd read a 10-20 lb rebound weight gain happens to most people during year 3. So I just continued with what I was doing and I eventually drifted down to 138, where my body naturally stopped. And yep - rebound happened. Up to 150 by the end of year 3 (which is perfect for me), and I thought I would end up stabilizing there - but no - I gained 10 more lbs around year 5. Trying desperately now to get back down to 150, since I felt like I looked and felt my best there. so in short, if you're sure you want to stop there, then that's totally fine, of course - but just keep in mind that a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting your low weight happens to a lot (probably most) of us. I'm glad I let myself keep going because I eventually did end up where I wanted to be (although again, I'd like to be able to get rid of the last 10 lbs that I gained!!)

Goal weight - just a number?

People started telling me the same thing when I hit about 150. I’m 5’3.5”, so a little shorter than you. I’m also a sm in tops and size 6. I’ve now dropped to 140ish, glad to have hit “healthy” BMI (just barely!). I’m comfortable here and am working to maintain in a window of 140-145, which at the high end will technically be overweight but I’m ok with that. BTW I lost 19 lbs since my skin removal surgery in January. According to the doc 11 lbs skin was removed so I’ve dropped a little more via diet and exercise since.
  17. Hello! I am looking to introduce myself and possibly get some advice or insight from others! I had a VSG in October of 2016. Weight DOS was 288, lowest weight I reached was 198 within about 6 months of the procedure. I developed terrible reflux that I managed with OTC medications, and maintained this weight loss almost effortlessly (I did go to the gym 4-5x weekly and ate small portions - stuck to the rules as best as I could) until the end of 2019. But to backtrack a little - I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2018, so by the time I was through with chemo, steroids, horrible lethargy...you get the picture... the weight piled back on within a year of finishing treatment, and by the end of 2019, I had gained 60lbs back. I am in no way trying to play the "cancer card" or blame it on that, I know I am fully responsible for the way my weight journey has turned out, but if I had to pinpoint when it started to go downhill, I'm pretty sure it aligned with that. Presently, I am at 261 and am seeking a revision due to the reflux, a severely dilated fundus that was seen on both a CT and an endoscopy, and the weight regain. I guess I am just looking for others who are also seeking a revision, or others who have recently had one who may have any words of wisdom! Lastly, I have Harvard Pilgrim and my authorization has been submitted by my surgeon and is now in the "pending medical review" stage. Anyone else with HP, roughly how long did it take to hear back? My program coordinator said anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks, but I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience. Thank you for reading and I'm looking forward to "meeting" more people on here!
  18. I've gotten freaked out before every surgery I've ever had, and I've always sailed through just fine. Don't get fixiated on the horror stories, as those are rare. They seem more common than they really are because people are more likely to post when they have problems than when they don't because they're looking for support or advice. Of course, those things do happen and it's good to be aware of the possibility, but again, they're pretty rare. the mortality rate on RNY is 0.3%, and it's even lower for sleeve. So you have a 99.7% chance of not dying - which are excellent odds. Major complications are also rare. Many of us don't have complications with these surgeries - and for those who do, most are minor and "fixable". I also contemplated surgery for 10 years (maybe longer), and I came to the conclusion that I had a much greater risk of complications from staying at over 300 lbs than I did with having the surgery. you always have the option to cancel or postpone if you're not ready - but I did go through with it (obviously) and am so glad that I did.

    Can't lose weight

a 10-20 lb bounce back is extremely common after hitting our lowest weight. It usually happens during year 3. And if you're at or near a normal BMI, losing 10-20 lbs is a BEAR. I gained 20, and would like to lose 10 of it, but it's been a huge challenge - so I can relate. if you're not tracking, I'd start that again - and go back to following all the rules (protein first, then non-starchy vegetables, and if you have room, an occasional small serving of fruit or whole grain carb). Don't eat and drink at the same time - all the stuff we learned and did that first year. if you're doing all this and still not losing, and again, if you're at or close to a normal BMI, it could be that this is just where your body wants to stabilize, and it'll be an ongoing fight to go lower and keep it there. I've kinda come to that conclusion - I have to either accept it or be prepared to constantly fight it. Ugh.
  20. I understand the nerves - I have also put off the surgery for about 10 years. I think the best thing you can do is remember how low the level of complications are, and think about how you're doing this because the risk of death/illness from obesity is much higher than from surgery. But anxiety before surgery is totally normal!

    Sick of protein drinks

Hi, I was wondering how the Tom yum soup settled on your tummy? I’ve been craving it so bad! I’m on full liquids and was hoping to have the broth of the soup but was worried it wouldn’t settle right. Especially because of the spice. The one I used to get is kind of spicy so I’m not sure if that’s a good idea for 10 days post op.
  22. Hi there! I had my lap band removed in March of this year. I had it for a little over 10 years with so many of the same issues that you’ve had. I was so relieved after it was removed, you will be too! I had to wait 3-4 months to heal from the removal surgery and I just had my sleeve surgery on 7/26. I also had a hiatal hernia that was repaired. My surgeon said most lap band patients end up having one. I know it has only been a couple of days but so far I am really happy with my decision.

    July Surgeries??

Hi! I had surgery on the 13th and a few days ago I made a post called "I hate the scale" lol. I have sort of been all over the place, too. Actually in the past few days since I upped my calories, I am having a more consistent downward weight trend. I think mine was a mixture of body fluids and constipation for the first 10 days after surgery. Today I had my two week appointment and I was down a total of 9 lbs, which doesn't seem like a lot especially compared to those people who lose like 22 or 25 lb in 2 weeks, but I'm following the plan, so there's not much else I can do. I was happy to find out that that loss finally put me under a 35 BMI, so little losses are adding up. I know that people usually talk about the three-week stall on here, but the second week was really chaotic for me weight-wise. Hopefully we will both be slow but steady to meet our goals. Ps I just realized this is the bypass forum, and I had sleeve, but I don't think it makes that much difference in the first few weeks.
  24. Hi everyone, I have been reading the posts here for a while but today is the first time I am posting. I am having gastric bypass tomorrow and my nerves are setting in. My anxiety is through the roof. I am thinking and over thinking every complication and bad possible out come. I am doing this to be Healthy and be here for my kids for a long time. But I cannot stop thinking what if something goes wrong and I have a worse quality of life after or even worse I die and it is my fault that I willing put myself in this situation and leave my kids without a mother. I have been thinking about this surgery for 10 years and I always chickened out, But not this time. I want to do this. I am just scared. Any suggestions on calming my last minute nerves would be greatly appreciated. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. Hey all, I was sleeved a little over a year ago. alittle about me, surgery day I weighed in at 386. I’m 6’3” and prior to the sleeve I was in the gym 5 days a week most weeks. I’ve been the same weight since 5 months post op, currently weighed in at 315.No matter what I do, more intense workout, sleeve reset, eating more protein, more water, more greens. ( all those were doctor suggestions). Nothing seems to work, kinda like before I even had surgery. Even got to the point where both the surgeons nurse practitioner has said quote “ I don’t have any answers for you”. The surgeon suggest the sleeve reset because he said I had to be over eating. Which I don’t. I eat like a bird most days i got a second opinion 2 months ago and she put me on a 1600 calorie diet, she thought I was under eating and I struggle to eat 1600 calories. my worst fear was when getting the surgery was it wouldn’t be effective and I understand that I’ve lost like 70lbs. That’s all fine and grand I feel better but I’m only 10 lbs from my lowest weight I achieved on my own and that is extremely disappointing to me. I was told by the surgeon prior to surgery that the weight would melt because I was already active quite a bit. I’ve contemplated getting it revised to the bypass but with the slim success of the sleeve I’m quite reluctant to go get another procedure. im really getting to the point of not caring anymore. The doctors all say my labs are good, no thyroid problems or anything like that. im at a loss, this was supposed to be a nice tool to use to change my life and it just seems like it broke early. thanks for reading and letting me vent Matt
