    New to site with questions

I'm sure that in general it's true that the more one has to lose the faster it comes off. You don't hear of people who only have 70 or so pounds to take off losing 30 in the first month, but people who have 150 or more may indeed lose that quickly in short bursts. But that's just nature at work, and perfectly understandable. As for how much weight "we" lose each month, that's a function of too many variables to say. The desired rate of loss is 4-10 lbs a month.

    Liquid Diet Struggles

I suspect most people go through this, I know I did. There are not a bunch of posts on here raving about their favorite liquid diet! If you need the real food that bad, talk to your surgeon. I did and he let me go to the egg phase at only 10 days post-op. Whatever you do though, do not deviate at this stage unless the surgeon approves. 5 minutes of food is not worth potential complications!
  4. Hi everyone. I had my sleeve on 03/01/2012. My HW was 228, SW was 209, and my current weight is 155. The weight is falling off and I feel fantastic. I love my sleeve. I have no hunger. because of that I don't eat like I should I was maintaining around 300 to 400 calories per day but now I am swimming and jogging daily I am constantly showing negative calorie count for the day on myfitnesspal. I weigh and measure so yes I am sure the numbers are right. I don't want to eat so much my weight loss slows but I think it would come off faster and be healthier to eat more. I just don't want to get in the habit of eating if I am not hungry. Is anyone else dealing with this? Please don't think I am complaining. I am super happy with my progress.
  5. Congratulations and welcome to the club! I was banded on June 15th. Unless you had a fill during surgery (some, but not many I've heard of, do) you will not feel restriction until your band is filled -- and that may take a few fills, depending on your doctor. I have not experienced restriction with liquids. But I must say that this morning I had a Protein Drink before going to work and had planned to eat a piece of fruit for Breakfast, but I do not have the appetite for it now. Too full. I had my 3rd fill this past Friday. I now have 4.5 cc's in a 10 cc band. It is only with this last fill that I am feeling any restriction at all. Keep in mind what we read on this forum all the time: the time right after surgery is for healing, not for losing weight (although you will probably lose some ). You are very lucky to have the single incision. I have 4! All the best to you!

    Eating

I was sleeved 12/16/10 and wasnt able to eat more than 8 bites of spaghetti with lean ground beef tonight. You will learn what is easier to eat as you go along. Chicken is still hard for me as well. Easiest thing for me to eat is food cooked in the crockpot! Its so moist and easy!

Explaining the band to young kids

Lets see... my kids are 10, 6 and 3. When the older ones have asked questions about my eating habits... my answer is/was: Mom has this plastic thing inside my tummy to help me lost weight! Its short sweet and to the point! If they want more details, we talk more about it!

    Sleeve Of Steel?

I'm 5 weeks out and haven't had any issues either. No nausea, no vomiting, no aversions to any foods, no slime, no dumping, nothing. I got in my Protein from day 2 and Water as well. I drink normally. I chew pretty well, but don't necessarily eat real slow, about 10 minutes to finish 2-3 oz of food. Never had an issue with eating too fast. I do stick to protein with a few veggies here and there, but not every day. I haven't eaten sugar, bread or other refined carbs, so I don't know about them. I have had spicy things and they're fine too. My only issue is that in 5 weeks I've only lost 16 lbs. SW was 229, but I had lost 61lbs in the 6 months prior to surgery with may, or may not have contributed to the slowness . I'm still holding out hope it picks up a bit, but all I can do it follow the plan and hope my body holds up it's part if the deal
  11. You're doing awesome to still be losing 1-2 pounds a day! I stopped losing that much about 10 days after surgery. It's been slow for me, but you seem to be doing fantastic!! Way to go!
  12. So here I sit with only 16 hours till my surgery having a mild nervous breakdown......:think I read most of you had the same anxiety and come through with flying colors. Why is this not helping me? <sigh> Its really strange that I am having such anxiety over this. Its mild compared to the 14 other operations I have had. 10 on my hips, 3 c - sections, and an apendectomy. The only differnce with this one that I can truly think that may be causing the anxiety is that I opted for this. The others I didnt really have a choice. I am a big believer in what one carries with them in thought is what is produced in the Universe. I am trying so hard to correct my mind set. All in all, I know I will be fine. Yes, I know I will be fine.... Let me start singing it as a song and I just might believe! I awoke today knowing that the clear liquid fast will be underway.... Not having a lot of problems with it. Not even hungry. Probably nerves. Had to take some Milk of Magnesia just about an hour ago.... Waiting for the results... :phanvan Did anyone have their blood taken before surgery to make sure your electolites ect were okay? I am drinking gaterade just to help that along. I am so pleased I found this site. Even though I have a suportive husband, Its nice to have a Lapband family who can know exactly what I am feeling. Will post again after my surgery.

    Major Stuck Episode

I did call the surgeon's office today. They told me that as long as it was just one stuck episode, not to worry, but to stay on my liquids until my stomach felt better and when I went back to solids to be very mindful of bite sizes, chewing and to take my time. We all have to be reminded from time to time. I'll see them on October 10 for a fill (if I am ready).
  14. First off sleeved June 15, 2015 Starting weight:265 Surgery weight:240 Today's weight:191 I had just a few problems after surgery with getting sick. Recovery was good and I was on smashed foods when I was released from the hospital. I was eating a spoonful of refried Beans with cheese and sour cream for about a week and half then added other foods as tolerated. I had trouble finding a Protein shake I liked after surgery and have finally found one that I can handled. I take my Vitamins and stool softener at night. I forget my Calcium all the time:( I just had my blood draw and everything came back in the normal range. When I was about 6 weeks out I hit a stall.....I stayed the same weight for about 3 weeks. I got very frustrated and I changed everything up. I added 10 mins to the treadmill(45 mins total), stationary bike for 20 mins and then started some leg exercises as my tummy was still a little sore. I upped my calories a little and would do treadmill and bike everyday, legs every other day. Then I would drink my Protein Shake right after I worked out. I would eat about an hour before I worked out. I changed what I was eating to only protein and did this for about a week. It helped a little. I have hit several stalls since then and tried all these things since and they haven't helped. I go a week or some and not lose then lose a few pounds. I might gain and then lose, I have been hovering at 191.5-189 for three weeks now and I can not seem to break this. I think that if you keep doing what your suppose to do your body will eventually realize and the scales will move again. My best advise is clean out the pantry and fridge. Get rid of any and all temptations and find a Protein Bar and Protein Drink to use after workouts/when your starving and that will help with the cravings your having if you are. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Sometimes the stalls help you realize where you have come from, and let's your mind caught up with your body changes!!
  15. Stalls happen. I had one only a week out from surgery that lasted 4 weeks. I can tell you I was doing everything I was supposed to do. Then after four weeks the scale started to move and I have lost 10 lbs in about 2 weeks. I think sometimes our bodies just need to catch up with itself. Those four weeks I didn't lose any weight but I lost a lot of inches. Hang in there! If you are doing everything you are supposed to the weight will come off! Try staying off the scale for awhile so you don't get overly frustrated. Take care!
  16. Of course I won't start riding until my Dr. gives the okay but when should I expect to get the okay to start riding again? I just had my RNY surgery 3 days ago so am still on a 10 lb lifting restriction.
  17. I really need some support right now. This is long, so I apologize in advance. This board was just the best place for me to turn to. I have 2 best friends - I've been friends with both of them for 26 years (since I was 5). One ® is obese, the other (K) has basically been a size 6 or 8 her whole life, and is just trying to lose the last 10 lbs from her pregnancy. My obese friend ® is the one who invited me to attend the lapband seminar with her. Afterwards, with the information, I was much at ease and begin considering it, especially since it was much less dangerous than gastric bypass, and I know at least 5 people who have successfully had gastric. It turned out R's insurance excluded the surgery, but I've been approved and am having it Dec 28th. So far, only my mom, dad, and my friend "R" who invited me to the seminar know that I'm having lapband surgery. Out of the blue today, my skinny friend "K" asked if I ever went to that seminar with "R" and what she thought of it. I told her it wasn't covered under her insurance, and she said "Good" and then started talking about how she didn't think people should have surgery just to lose weight, etc. So I'm sitting here, knowing I'm having it in 3 weeks listening to this (which reaffirmed my decision not to tell her because she obviously won't be supportive). I did make a comment to her that when people have 100-150 lbs to lose, its practically impossible to lose it on your own and keep it off. She said yeah, I've been trying to just lose 10 lbs. To make a long story short, now I am doubting myself. Wondering if I am putting myself at risk of dying "just to lose weight" when I could leave my 15 year old son without a mother. He will be out of town with my father when I have the surgery. He sees his dad, who doesn't even pay child support or attend his birthday parties or sports events, etc 2 days a month. His dad lives a totally different lifestyle - its always been just the two of us (me & my son). I couldn't forgive myself if I elected to do something that caused my son to lose me (even though I guess I would be dead I wouldn't even know). As you can see, my state of mind is not good right now...I don't know why I am letting my friend affect me like this. Now I'm thinking about death. Something that I hadn't really worried about after I saw the video of the actual surgery. I've always had a fear of dying and leaving my son to end up living with his father. It took a lot for me to be strong enough to undergo this surgery. Its not a decision I took lightly. I've had surgery before (cesearean when I had him) and that was much more invasive, and I was up taking care of him the next day, and obviously I lived. I don't know what I'm looking for in writing this post......maybe just letting my fears out, maybe asking if others had the same fear, or dealt with the same situation with a friend. I should be able to tell my best friend that I'm having surgery, but she has always been a very judgemental person. Thanks in advance for any wise words....
  18. I was so stressed prior to doing this surgery that I couldn't stop eating and actually put on weight. I was afraid of dying, I was afraid that I made a mistake, I was afraid of everything but here I am just over 5 weeks later and 25.5 lbs lighter wondering why I didn't do it sooner. We all have a different experience with this but most people get through it without any problems. I'm off my diabetes meds and my BP is 125/75... lowest it's been in ages, my doc is going to cut my BP meds in half. On top of that my old clothes fit again and I'm looking forward to losing the next 25 lbs so I can buy new clothes to go with the sexy new body. Your friend sounds like she understands how hard it is to lose weight since she can't get her 10 lbs off. You have to decide whether to tell her or not but the bottom line is that you are doing this for yourself & your son. You can always tell everyone when you're at the other side of it, when you over the op and back into the swing of things. Good luck with your surgery. :whoo::whoo:

    Stalls...

My first week I dropped 10 pounds. These past two weeks have been slow. I stalled for about a week and now at almost 4 weeks out I feel like it's picking back up. I'm down about 17 pounds.

    What if...

My BMI of 53 and my hypothyroidism were my only two health conditions. I worked with the bariatric team, attended 6 months of classes and documented my previous weightloss efforts. The doctor's office then built the case for me needing surgery and presented it to the insurance company and I was approved. I encourage you to work closely with the health care team as they are your greatest advocates with the insurance company. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

    Pregnant with Lap-band

I am almost 10 weeks and got an unfill. I had already gained 7-13 lbs. maybe more. I started freaking out having anxiety attacks about how much weight I am gaining. I am getting big fast. I was 170 lbs I had lost 80lbs total 2 years post opt, and I hadnt been that small since I was a kid. I shopped all the time and love all the clothes and my size. I was finally a 10-12 I'm 5"8". We have been married 4 years so I guess it's time. Anyways, I am reading now and I see all these comments about how others didnt get a complete unfil. I kinda wish I didn't get it all unfilled. I was just so hungry before my unfil. I hope I can lose it all. I understand how how you feel about gaining the weight. I already finding my pants not closing.

    Vitamins and Post-Op Diet

On a scale of 1-10, I'd say postop life was a 3 for the 1st 4 months.....WAY easier than some of the crazy diets I've been on and with much better results. Really the only hard part was having to eat and drink when I wasn't hungry.... It was such a chore. I also developed a bad C. diff infection causing severe diarrhea for 2 months, but that wasn't related to my surgery.....got it from a dental procedure. But After 4 months everything was back to normal and Life has been easy. As for Vitamins, it's not a one size fits all. You need to do regular bloodwork and adjust accordingly. For example, I was taking a Multivitamin, calcium, Iron, Vitamin D3 and B12 sublingual immediately postop. My 6 month labs showed that my calcium and iron were high so I stopped taking those. 12 month labs were all good. I will recheck again when I am two years out and make any necessary adjustments. Studies on gastrectomy patients revealed that 90% developed deficiencies within 10 years. (iron, D and B12 were the most common, but folate, zinc and calcium show up, too). So yes, bloodwork and supplementation are important to prevent serious health issues. And taking daily vitamins Is really no big deal.
