  1. Sagging skin will have a lot of variables to it. How old you are (the older you get, the less resilient skin is), how much weight you're going to lose (the more to lose, the more likely you'll sag), how long you've had the weight on, etc. Exercise will help. Some people swear by skin tightening cream and dry brushing to stimulate new cell growth. From a tattooist's point of view, where your ink is located will have a lot to do with it. If you carried a lot of weight in your hips, then you may have some sagging issues. If your weight has fluctuated a lot post-tattoo, that will impact it as well. In much the same way that the older you get, the more the ink you got when you were younger changes, so it goes with weight gain and loss.
  2. Q1- Can anyone that has had the ideal surgery and success give me an overview of what to expect? It is possible to have an ideal experience. I recovered from surgery within a day, had small but regular fills and lost steadily - it was fast and very gratifying for six monmths, steadied out to a pound or two a week for the rest of the first year, a pound a week for the second year and then over time, I graudally lost about 10 to 15 more pounds, for a total of 100 lost. I started with a BMI of 36, so with a 100lb loss I have lost well into low BMI territory, and am now "thin" not just less fat. I ran regularly and now also do boxing and bootcamp, but I never felt I worked THAT hard on my eating, the portion control was all I really needed. Q2- What are the rules? What will I never be able to eat? What will I never be able to do? Well, I've found I can eat anything if I want to (some foods are harder than others but that varies wildly between individuals, however bread, rice, Pasta and fresh fruit are common). I cant truly "pig out" but you can certainly enjoy a special meal and feel like you've had a treat. If I do something a bit naughty like eat crap int he mid afternoon, I simply cant eat dinner. That takes care of weight gain from small indulgences, but you have to use your stomach space wisely so its not good to fill up on sugar and then not eat your healthy meal. We just dont have "rules" in Australia like you guys do, its just a matter of eating sensibly and eating smaller portions. Q3- Do you have any regrets? Absolutely none. Q4- What is the financial impact after the surgery? Groceries, supplements, etc.? I dont do supplements - I always took a basic multi Vitamin which i still do. I dont do Protein shakes and bars, ever, so there's no added cost there. I eat fresh food and cook from scratch like I always did. However, since I had my surgery five years ago, my family has grown, my kids have become teenagers etc so I truly havent noticed any savings on food, but I do throw more out from my plate. I never spent a lot of money on take away food either, didnt have a drive thru habit and didnt eat a lot of junk foods like McDonalds. I notice that meals that the recipe book says "serves four" does five of us for two meals, but my kids also complain that I give them tiny dinners and starve them, since my perception of "normal" is now a bit skewed.
  3. For three years now I've had a lot of trouble with both my knees. I'd been told numerous times that because of my weight my knees were both, bone on bone and I had osteoarthritis. Long story short, double knee replacement surgery was in my future. Since my surgery in January I've done very little exercise, due to the lack of flexibility and intense pain. I finally got into a pain management center and was ready to get my first Synvisc injection when the dr looked at my ex rays and told me I had the knees of a 20 year old. I don't have osteoarthritis at all, I have water on the knee and a lot of it. A knee in good condition should only hold 5 cc's of fluid. The dr removed 15 cc's of fluid and then injected the Synvisc. I felt instant relief, the pressure was almost non existent without all the fluid and the pain is minimal now. I can't believe it took this long to find this out. All those years of massive amounts of steroids for my asthma caused my major weight gain and this accumulation of fluid on my knees. At least now I can start exercising without fear of damaging my knees further.

    Lori M's Journal 1-2008

Was probably 300 lbs at my highest, about 270 when I had my surgery 3 years ago. Finally got into a size 10 and was feeling great was weighing 170 or so. Throughout 2007 I am gaining weight and need to get control of this. Went to the Dr. yesterday (internist) and my weight read 201. My home scale reads 190 so I am somewhere inbetween but this is unacceptable and I have to start going down again. When my band is filled too much I vomit all the time. Right now there aren't many foods that stay down so I am hesitant to get more of a fill and want to take some control on my own. Find myself eating high fat content foods because they stay down (and they taste good). Need a new plan for 2008, going to PR in June for a wedding, have to be down 25 lbs or so by then. Want to get my chin/neck done at the end of this year and will only do so if I have controlled my weight. I will keep this journal up and hope that it will help me control and monitor myself. Am using the word control a lot. I definitely have some willpower and responsibility issues. Am 48 years old, thought I'd have a better grip on this by now. Guess not. Have been home sick for 6 days now, (borderline pneumonia) laying in bed, eating, but not too much, there's no food here which is probably good. Am taking a steroid for lung inflammation which probably has added a few pounds. Took 2 Diruex (otc fluid pills) in desperation. Want this to be the year I get healthy on a more natural note. Always looking for an easy fix and with this weight gain I have see that the lap is a tool and I still have to take responsibility. Cannot go up a size. Cannot buy bigger clothes. Will start to journal my food. Can do that on actual paper. :clap2: Will drink water. Will not eat candy (maybe a little once a month). Will try to start some kind of excercise. My husband is a world of warcraft "addict" and we only have one computer. He is going to have to share or get me a laptop. So happy 2008 to me and everyone else on this journey. My goal is get back down another 20 - 30 lbs at least this year and to STOP GAINING. Good luck to us all. :clap2:

  6. Grrrr! Everything seemed to be going so smoothly & now it just feels like one more thing...no wait, just one more... Or wait! Sorry...just THIS one more thing... Today: birth control This battle over my uterus has got to end. Is it not bad enough that I have to stop taking my Yaz? Now my PCP won't quit haggling me about switching. She is CONVINCED that Mirena is best. I know that it is not, for ME. So then she wants me back on Nuvaring. (NOT going to happen--that thing did evil things to me) I asked 3x abt depo & now that my pill pack is almost ready to run out, she's calling me back in for ANOTHER APPT TO DISCUSS THIS ISSUE. In my eyes, it's not an issue. If I can't be on the pill, I want the shot or I'll take my chances on nothing. She is so thick. I am fully aware that depo has been linked to weight gain. However, I've been on it before & I know what to expect! . I should've gotten a sep GYN. omg I'm so frustrated. 347*294/285/135 (*347HW/294SSW) | @Mwrarr | mwrarr.wordpress.com
  7. Living My Dream

    Post your NSVs

I love the NSV's - digging through my closet and pulling out the size 16 clothes and knowing they fit perfectly now and are even getting too big - throwing out the clothes from size 18 to 2 XL (that was even getting tight) knowing I will never be that size again - knowing that for the first time in my diet history, I don't have to worry about regaining the weight - gaining only a pound or two if I am really bad for a while then getting back on a healthy track and it comes off - getting compliments on how great I look - not having to worry about fitting into places like amusement rides, theatre seats - wearing clothes that fit my new body and show it off instead of hiding under loose baggy clothes - having a waist again I LOVE MY BAND! It is the best thing I ever did for myself.:rolleyes2:

    Help!

@emk101009 wonderful weight loss how do you know hungry you "should" be???? "it" varies for all of us some of us might never have lost their hunger issues others maybe at 3 months others at.............. stalls happen to most all of us Get Over It must be patient - it will pass (like gas ) time periods/stalls will vary from 3 weeks to.............. God Grant Me Patience, Just Hurry Up About It!!! We're all different we lose amount of weight in different time periods we lose inches at the beginning from different areas ie less boobs or less tushy!!! yogurt is not that filling but it is great, and has lots of Protein too you can never have too much protein during the day dense protein like chicken is wonderful - very filling you didn't chew thoroughly?? means you probably ate too fast too!!!! KNOCK IT OFF slow down with your eating and chew better that wouldn't cause you to stretch your sleeve after each bite, put your utensil down for a few seconds too use a baby spoon - that helps too i "think" many people at one time or another worry that they might have stretched their new little tummies as far as "stretching" your tummy eat wayyyy too much food, too fast all morning, noon, afternoon, evening & night in other words 24/7 grazing ALL day (like you/me did in the good 'ol days this will cause weight gain but as far as stretching the sleeve - don't "think"it happens follow all the rules and things should be good you'll get wrinkles if you worry toooo much good luck 43 lbs down!!! kathy congrats

new, no surgery yet, is it hard to do?

Yes, most of us can identify with the love and comfort of food. We have all been there, and probably will always struggle, however, for me the lapband has lessened that desire, especially with the amount. I am a slow loser but a consistent loser. I was unsure, scared, hesitant, desperate, and the feelings go on and on. However, I wanted to feel healthy and be able to get some kind of control over this weight issue. I had tried so many different things. The lapband has helped me personally to get a better perspective on my eating habits. Does the lapband take away my desires, control my weight gain, stop my bad habits, no…however the band gives me incentive to keep trying, to not feel like a constant failure, to limit my amount, to shrink to a weight that lessens my hunger, to improve my health, etc. Is the lapband a cure all, NO, but it's a tool. As for me it's been a successful tool. It's taken me almost two years to lose 75 pounds and I need to lose at least 40 more, but I see the possibility now, something I had totally given up on. So go into this as informed and realistically as possible. Find a good surgeon, mine was Dr. Enoch and he was great for me. We, who relate to you totally, wish you the best in your decision and your weight lost. Initially the band took a good month to feel truly feel good. The first week was a bit tough but manageable, each week after better and better. Prepare to lose slowly, but I feel that losing this way has been more long term in the end. So far continue to lose a pound at a time, sometime, 1/4 or 1/2 in a month, but it's better than continually gaining. Keep Smiling Vickie from Morrisville, NC

    Waiting for approval in GA

Hi! I'm in the waiting stage as well. Luckily only 3 months here in TN, but I'm nervous something will come back and say, nope, you gotta wait more. I am a lapband failure - surgery in 2011, only lost around 40 pounds, but was able to keep it that way for years. I started having issues with reflux and weight gain, so they removed the band November 2019. Now just waiting on the new approval for RNY.

Could you gain from working out?

yep...right now I'm up a pound....and yep I'm sore! It happens....and I agree it's discouraging even when you know it's not "real weight gain!"

    Spring cleaning wakeup call

Yeah, that's part of who we were, and some of that person is still in there. The things/feelings that drove us to WLS are probably the things that well up once in a while, so I'm not surprised from the emotion that comes with it. The thing for me is that I am the SAME person, and my thin self sort of wonders how/why I let that happen (extreme weight gain), so that's where I struggle. My daughter graduated from high school last week, and we had a big graduation party yesterday. She made big picture collage and she put a few of me on there from before. I had the same sort of reaction you describe looking at a particular picture. It was a family picture from my husbands side, and there I was, looking the absolute best I could look, but huge. Literally huge. I had on a pretty teal colored sweater, and it really stands out in that picture....and it just makes me a little sick to see it. I took up so much space in the picture, literally the same amount of space as 2 people. Now I am half the size I used to be. That picture was one of about 50-60 on a very full board, but somehow I feel like that one 4x6 print dominates the board. That's how I used to feel all the time, that my size made me the negative center of attention. On a more positive note, people came to the party and some that I haven't seen in a year didn't recognize me! People I invited came and walked right past me, lol. So, I try not to dwell on how things used to be, because you can't change the past. It is what it is, and the future is so much brighter. I'm glad it's only a distant memory and I'm not living it everyday any more.
  13. In 38 weeks I have lost an average of 1.5 lbs a week; mostly 1 lb per week as I lost a lot in the beginning. I write my experiences down on a weekly blog each Sunday so I know exactly what I weighed and when. Although my loss has been slow, it's been steady and I have to say I have never felt like I was depriving myself or on any diet, although my tummy could only handle certain things. Today I gained 2 lbs. I was on vacation, but I don't think it was the food. I think it was the exercise. So today I wrote about my exercise over the past 8 months, as a 50 something, non-athletic woman. If you're in that category (or if you have any interest) check it out by clicking the link below my signature. Thanks for looking. I haven't been on the forum for a while since I was out having fun! Band Vs. Sleeve - Really Upset...

Like it's been stated, this is your decision. Don't forget that there are also negatives about the sleeve: higher complications, longer recovery time, possibility of weight gain after the body learns how to reabsorb things. Have you thought about the Iband? It's a procedure where they take the stomach and suture it into the shape of the sleeve without removing the stomach portion, and then a band is placed at the top. From what I've read, this lowers the risk of slippage with the band due to the stomach shape and also requires less maintenance/fills because the plication of the stomach only allows for so much to be held. The negatives of the lapband are easily found too: hard to eat breads/rice/pastas, fibrous veggies, some leaner meats. You must go in for regular visits with the Dr. to get fills and check ups. You may get a leak, a flipped port, an erosion, or a slip. Recovery time is a lot less than the other WLS because you are not getting anything cut or rerouted. I just look at it like this: if any of the above complications occur with the band and prove it to be a tool I cannot use, I can always petition to insurance to have a revisional procedure. But, if it does work as planned, I have my whole anatomy and I lose weight. And, maybe in the future they will have developed an even better way to lose/maintain weight and I can upgrade then. Just really analyze the pros/cons of both.

    Best contraceptive?

I loved my nuvaring. No side effects. Insertion was a bit intimidating, but the pill made me very very sick. I had no weight gain, didn't have to remember to take a pill, and could make it so I didn't have a period every months. I totally recommend it.
  16. Hi Bright- It makes sence that when we eat ALOT of food that we haven't been eating regularly it stays in our intestins longer to break down & process. It may take several days for this "food" to be expelled & therefore you weight gain will be high until its all gone. That added with too much Salt- is the culprit. But once you get back on track you will see progress. I think alot of newbies & Those yet to be banded(myself) choose the band kinda for that reason. You know that we CAN eat the SAME stuff as before- we truely are not willing to give it up for a LIFETIME> At least I think its one of the componets for the band choice. With RNY- most wouldn't be able to do sweets & other things(dumping syndrome). But even they gain weight back. I saw my GYN 2 days ago & she had had the RNY-lost 90 pd in 1 yr & gained 40 pds back. How sad? She thinks her tummy stretched. I may switch Docs & tonight go to a new seminar w/this new Doc who does both types of surgery. I hope to be even more convinced of the band but RNY does have pluses as well. But as to gaining & plateus they are with BOTH surgeries & Both have pitfalls & most importantly BOTH will not work unless we follow them to a tee!!! Which means when we have fun- we will need a little mending period. I guess I wrote this for you as much for myself-because I am very scared of failure. You think I would be so used to it by now-lol Keep your chin up Bright- & yes maybe go get a "tiny" bit more of a fill. Than do your thing- I know we will be hearing weight loss stories from you in no time!
  17. I know the feeling! It was just suggested to me today at my 3 month post op about the apple and pb. Up until this point I have avoided buying it myself because I'm afraid of being out of control with it. I also live alone. But I went and bought it. I figured i'd give it a try. I'm worried about it might be a weight gaining food for me. I also bought pickles today too! lol!
  18. Help! Has anyone been denied by their insurance for gaining weight during the 6mo diet? I've gained around 20lbs! My doctor took me off of phentermine that was somewhat helping me with my eating habits. I only have this month and September left for the 6mo diet and have everything else done. I'm just really nervous about the weight gain. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks!!!

    cheating on pre-op liquid diet

I admire you for being able to post here about what you did, that takes courage. You have it in you to do this. Here is what I do as I struggle with foods I should not be eating. Every time I see something that is not healthy for me, or not on my pre-surgical diet and I am tempted, I visualize the skull and cross bones symbol for POISON right on top of it. After all, some of these foods are poison to those of us who struggle with obesity. Even thin people should not be eating that stuff, but some can eat away without it causing them to gain weight. That is not my luck to be able to. But then again, when I think about it, maybe WE are the lucky ones. We are learning to eat the right foods in the right portions. The people who live on fast food still pay a price, it may not be in weight gain but they will surely end up with unhealthy fat in their arteries. As the others have said, you have time to stick to the program now. And be prepared to say good-bye (at least for awhile) to those foods that are poisonous for you. Good luck. Nancy PS, I am pretty sure the day will come when I will be the one posting here about needing to stick to the liquid diet, LOL. We all have to do it after all.
  20. How many of you are "food addicts"? I am definitely one of those. I have lost 62 pounds now gained back 2 of them. I am happy for my loss (probably life saving) but I am following old habits of eating when stressed or sad etc. For me it seems to be a battle of mind over stomach and this month the mind is winning. HOW DO YOU CHANGE YOUR MINDSET and make it permanent? :bored: HOW DO YOU GET OVER A FOOD ADDICTION? The band can't do it for me - I still have to control or alter or replace my cravings for emotional eating. I welcome any response. Can anybody relate? Has anybody found a good tool to use? I need help! Betsy - betsyw20@comcast.net
  21. @@LipstickLady you are probably right it is a good thing there is no remedy for dumping syndrome. Like I said it's a blessing and a curse but it a curse that keeps us on track and helps us avoid weight gain after surgery
  22. Ab stitching is what they do to correct any separation of the abs that may have happened, usually from pregnancy or weight gain. They literally sew your abs back up.
  23. Hey everyone. It’s the holidays and I have to admit I kind of lot my mind a little. I actually went home for then holidays and alot of my favorite foods the had. I don’t feel like I over indulged at one time. However, I do feel really guilty. I was doing so well. I have my surgery scheduled on Jan 18 and start pre-op diet Jan 4. I had people say enjoy myself, but I feel so bad. I don’t know if I gain alit of weight, but I feel like I’ve gained some. Is anyone else going through this? thanks. Ty.

Cold since surgery - is this normal?

I have seen this issue brought up here. Seems many of us are colder at a lower calorie intake and or lower weight. Enjoy summer! Fall is approaching, and I have heating pads in several spots at my house and an electric blanket just for the foot of my bed!! (My feet seem to be the coldest part of me.... )I have resorted to running a hair dryer into my boots to heat things up! Best of luck! Sad to say that even a small weight gain made me warmer Sigh
