Bariatric Myths??
Arabesque replied to BabySpoons's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oh yes. I’m always surprised by how often people still say they’re getting a gastric band & that they’re still offered as an option. It takes very little reading to discover all the issues with them. I remember when I was researching options pre surgery I was quite astounded by the problems & so very quickly ruled it out. No way! -
Hi Carla, I was on the same diet as you and I barely lost 4 pounds, so please do not worry. I think they recommend the number of protein shakes based on height and weight, some are on three, some on four. My surgery is in 6 hours and I will ask if the fact that I lost only 4 pounds is an issue, but I do not think so.

Bariatric Myths??
Arabesque replied to BabySpoons's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Nothing wrong with being a skeptic or wanting to dig for further information before making a final decision or taking a position. Maybe some of the malabsorption conflicting information could be attributed to simply how your body may react to the surgery. It’s not expected to occur but might in rare cases. Same could be said of any surgery. For example it’s very unusual for people to develop a protein malabsorption issue after a gall removal surgery but here I am. Keep track of your vitamin needs with blood tests. Then you can make informed decisions about what vitamins you do or don’t need & how much you need to take. And don’t be surprised by variations in your levels & therefore changing needs. I think sleeve is popular as it’s the less invasive in regards to changes to how the body works of the surgeries and can be converted to a stronger surgery if needed. Same with the band back in the day. That was my thinking anyway. -
The fairlife nutrition plan shakes are 150 calories and 30 G protein. Maybe try those !!

Criteria I was told was 1. Less than 200 calories per serving, 2. At least 25 grams of protein, and 3. Maximum of 5 grams of sugar and fat. Yours seems to fit criteria

How much protein powder in a bottle of water?

Good afternoon community, I hope you are doing well! I finally started my journey April 2023 after years of it being put on the table by my primary care doctor. It was hard seeing the scale reach 293 at 25 years old. I have days when I am really excited about the journey and finally being comfortable in my body but there are other days when I have doubts. My doubts don't usually center around food. I am ready for the lifestyle change and am researching the best proteins and recipes for when the time comes. I think about how some who have the surgery can't consume water the same. I think about the side effects, the nausea, the vomiting, dumping syndrome. I'm scared of possibly regretting it and think about the worst happening. I wanted more information on your journeys if you don't mind sharing. Your pros, your cons, if you had doubts and what helped you get over those? For those who had the surgery, do you have any regrets? is there something you would do differently? things you wished you knew before the surgery? On a positive note, what are the milestones and the good things that came with the surgery? I want to know, if anyone regretted it? Thank you in advanced for your replies!

My surgery is tomorrow, I will not know the time until this evening after 6:00 p.m. I do not know why Mayo Clinic does this, but they do not let you know what time the surgery is until the night prior to the surgery. They did the same for my husband’s brain surgery couple of years ago. I still have doubts about this gastric bypass surgery and probably I will until they roll me in, but I think it is a normal reaction to fear. I have so many underlying health conditions that will be resolved with this surgery and I still doubt my decision. My mind will play this game until I wake up from the surgery and I will know that I do not have any other options. 😀

My nutritionist advised me to add protein powder to everything, including the water I drink at least in the first month after surgery so I can meet the protein goal. Just some info for you.

I wasn’t allowed to snack until solid foods - three meals only in purées & soft. And then it was one snack: a high protein yoghurt (was already eating that as a meal option in purée stage because I stopped shakes once liquids ended) or soft cheese (I liked Jarlsberg & string). After a couple of weeks I could have certain fruit as a snack option too or sometimes ate a wedge of cucumber (peeled) sprinkled with salt. Didn’t have other snacks until I was starting maintenance & I needed to up my calories. But plans are different. Check with your dietician for ideas that are suitable within your plan. PS - Yoghurt drinks are great too - blend your high protein yoghurt with milk.

Been Reading Nightmare complications ?
Arabesque replied to stevechavez505's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That’s a tough one to answer & really up to how you personally recover. Some are fine after a week & easily return to work. Some need two, three or four weeks. I took four weeks & needed all of them. I struggled with low blood pressure (which was a pre existing tendency), lethargy & would get doughy in the head at times. But I am someone who always seems to take longer to recover from everything even a cold. Discuss returning part time to begin or with reduced hours each day & keep the option of maybe needing longer open if your employers are willing. -
No pre surgery diet 😳 Is this normal?.. or ok?
catwoman7 replied to Mari3997's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't need help, either. My husband took a week off but ended up going back to work after two days. It was nice having him get things for me (like my protein shakes), although I could have done it myself. I think I was restricted to lifting up to 10 lbs max for the first month or so - so lifting your dog may be a bit much. Pet stairs would be a good solution (my 18-year-old arthritic cat uses those to get up on my bed) -
I haven't lost anything close to 10 lbs any month this year. The last month I lost a significant amount of weight was December 2022. This year it's 1-2 pounds per month, even less. I've been tracking my eating more religiously these last few weeks, and a typical day is 1100-1200 kcal. Shouldn't I be losing or is that enough for maintenance? Will I have to go even lower? I'm getting 50-60 grams of protein most days.

More like a twist on a protein drink. I bought an Inspire Mint Chip protein drink mix and freeze it to eat like ice cream. The consistency is more icy than creamy, but I take longer to eat it and I can pretend it's ice cream. I second the cheese, love cheese.

Yayy!! You are almost there🤗 I will keep you in my prayers most definitely. Fairlife are my favorite too. Does anyone know where to get the strawberry flavor? And broth I use kettle & fire bone broth. I also like the chicken boullions by herbox green container. They have low sodium options too!

What are some good high protein snacks for soft food stage? I'd like to start moving away from protein drinks. Thanks!

It happened to me too…I think it’s the multivitamin w/iron but I almost gave up on protein shakes because I thought that is what tasted like metal -

Oh wow does he understand your goal for protein? And, your calorie intake has drastically reduced? Suggestion, maybe if you post a diary in your kitchen of what you are eating daily, then he may be able to understand. Good luck!! -
I am also going to blow off a little steam here guys. As you all know getting protein in isn’t easy. Yesterday I grabbed some protein custard from the fridge and Hubby said “eating again?” That was like a knife in my back.

oh the Weight-Loss-Phase-Constipation-Woes. I feel you. I was chronically constipated for months after surgery. I developed a regimen of adding 2 tsps of Benefibre to my protein shakes twice a day, drinking tons of water, and exercising/moving regularly. And if i hadn't pooped in 4-5 days i'd take a dose of Senokot or similar. If i still didn't go after more than week, then it was time for a glycerin suppository...which usually did the trick (only 2-3 times did i have to do 2 suppositories) I did notice it got better when i started eating more veggies and fat (i was mostly just eating protein during weight loss phase). Now i no longer do the daily Benefibre and poop pretty regularly every 3-4 days (which is a huge departure of having to poop 2+ times a day pre-wls). I only get constipated now during/after vacations...but i think thats because i have an irrational need to only poop at home lol!

It's good to hear how people are doing after having DS surgery. Perchance, does anyone live in Washington (state), Oregon, Idaho, Montana, or Utah? I live in Washington and so far have had one person who knows of a DS surgeon - in Utah. Looks like that may be my closest option.

MGB 4 months post op. I’ve lost more than just weight…
Arabesque replied to SuperGuuurl's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Forgot I do have one issue post my gall removal. (Can’t believe I f forgot to mention it.) I now don’t absorb protein as well & I also stopped absorbing my HRT med. I take creons to help with the protein & now use a patch for HRT. Apparently malabsorption with certain nutrients can be a side effect but it’s not common. I don’t know anyone else without a gall who has an issue. It’s probably just me. -

P.S. the other option - staying obese - isn't good for your health, either. In fact, it's probably worse.
