    Gastric Bypass Aug 16th

I haven’t had any regrets. 5-7 days after surgery is when you think “what the hell did I just do?” But then you are able to drink a little more protein each day & then you progress though all the food stages & you slowly start to feel better as the weight starts falling off. Then you feel amazing & wonder why you didn’t do it sooner! I think most of us were scared before surgery. It’s a natural response.
  2. So there have been talks about pregnancy and babies with my boyfriend. With history of PCOS, my cycles have become regular and I have been ovulating for the last year or so. We may try for pregnancy may be sometime next year. My question is, anyone here who got pregnant after WLS? If yes, did you end up losing your post pregnancy weight? Or was it difficult to bring it back to pre-pregnancy baseline? Currently I am happy with where I am with my weight. But also, looking forward to starting a family if destiny permits. But, the weight gain cycle of pregnancy concerns me. Putting on the weight will naturally happen but I was wondering if the bypass tool will help me lose the weight post pregnancy. Any thoughts, experience shall be great!
  3. It's 6 months since my mini gastric bypass. I have lost total of 55 Kg or 121.25 lbs. My weight loss trend is still hovering around 6 Kg (13.2 lbs) loss/month. But from last 3 months, I have seen increase in my hunger. In terms of percentage, the increase would be 20 % as compared to the 3 months back. Is this normal? I am also spending a lot of time for workout - around 6 hours of cardio and 12 hours for strength training + HIIT + weights every week. Not sure if that along with muscle i am developing is causing this hunger? or maybe its normal? Also, lost my job to layoffs recently but finances are not an issue. So just trying to maintain calm and avoid any emotional eating. My current weight is 92.5 Kg or 203.5 lbs. Should I get my metabolism evaluated to see my calorie requirement or wait upto 1 year for weight to stabilize? I had my surgery outside country of residence due to surgery wait times. I do teleconference with bariatric surgeon every 3 months, but no in person visit option available. Please suggest. Thank you

    Surgery Failure

Could be water weight, could be hormones, could be the day of the week, could just be...your turn to have a minor setback. You'll have some fluctuation here and there and as you lose more and the weight loss slows, you may notice it more. This is not a "failure" and it's destructive to frame it that way to yourself. It's part of the process. It's going to be ok. Don't beat yourself up. Don't sabotage yourself. Just keep going.
  5. I recently had the surgery on May 25th of this year. So far I have lost 30-40 pounds. However yesterday I weighed and have gained 5 pounds. I have only been eating baked chicken and fish and maybe some steamed or boiled shrimp. The surgeon/Dr. desk lady thinks it may be fluid based off she said it seems like I follow most of the diet plan. I make sure I consume no more than 400 calories a day and that whatever juice I drink is only 10-20 grams of carbs. But I don't think my surgery is successful.
  6. I’ve got kids (teenagers and adults now, but still)…my relationship with them became EXPONENTIALLY better after I lost the weight: I am happier, less cranky, can participate in all their interests, less tired, more patient. Plus I’ll likely live longer now to spend more time with them. but I do get the fear of surgery. When I woke up in the recovery room after surgery, the first thought in my head was: “YEEEESSSS! I’m alive!!!!” It took me 3 tries to finally get sleeved…I backed out of two scheduled surgery dates cuz I was apprehensive. Third time was the charm. Looking back, I wish I just went through with it the first time. you are ready when you’re ready. Only you will know when. Good Luck! ❤️

    Sleeve to RNY

Today weigh in is 172. The post op diet helps to lose so this hasn’t been so bad. I did re-gain (my own choice) to the 160 area and took it a little over when I knew I was getting the revision. So I am 8+ lbs less than my original weight pre surgery and 17 lbs down in 3 weeks from when I left the hospital. I don’t thinks that’s too bad. My worries are at ease because I don’t see the 140 happening anytime soon. Lots of my loss has been fluid and the rest I took on due to being afraid to look sickly again.
  8. Just came back from a short trip to Langkawi Island here in Malaysia with my wife and kids. This is my wife and I second visit after going there in 2013 for our honeymoon (time flies!). We all had a great time there specially my kids. The weather was nice and the island was not very crowded. I got to try a lot of things that I've never dared or was able to do before WLS. The trip was full of NSVs so I wanted to share some of those with you guys. 1. I didn't need a seat belt extension this time and had plenty of room in my seat! I was able to use the food tray without it pushing against my belly. 2. I tried parasailing (parachute on a boat), banana boat and even jet skiing for the first time in my life 3. I joined my wife and kids in playing all the rides and games in the water theme park. I was always the guy standing out of the pool cheering while my wife and kids were having fun. Not this time. My son was so happy that daddy was with him on the big water slide. Some of the rides had a weight limit of 80 kg (they even have a scale to weigh people who are close to that weight - I was not asked to hop on the scale haha). Climbing the stairs to the ride starting point would have given me a heart attack before WLS let alone sliding down. 4. We took a speed boat for island hopping which was awesome. In one of the islands we had to climb the stairs up to a beautiful lake (Unlike my first visit I was fine and not out of breath while carrying my bag and my daughter). We rented pedal boats and circled around the lake for 30 mins which was awesome. 5. We took some photos at the resort that we stayed in during our honeymoon 10 years ago. Left photo was taken in August 2013 and right one three days ago. This was also my first time ever wearing shorts in public and being at ease with it. Guess who bought 4 more shorts haha. The cherry on the cake was weighing myself after returning home to find that I've lost half of my weight on surgery day. A total of 74.5 kg lost which is my wife and daughter's weight combined!

    Should I have the surgery?

I agree with @The Greater Fool. Surgery really should be a last resort. It's the nuclear option. It's a life-changing event. You will forever be changing your relationship with food. The physical healing, complications, and learning how to eat are the easy part. When your hunger and food addiction issues kick in (and they will!), then the real work begins - and it's hard. I'm very happy that I had the surgery. I believe it saved my life. But, I had half a century of failed diets behind me and finally threw in the towel. If you think you can lose the weight by dieting, then I suggest that you do.

    Should I have the surgery?

Best thing I ever did. As @The Greater Fool said yes there are horror stories but there are horror stories & stories of complications with every surgery. Bariatric surgery has some of lowest stats of post surgical complications. I’ve read they’re lower than an appendectomy. And the risk of serious health complications & the risk of earlier death are much higher with obesity. I didn’t have any comorbidities before my surgery. No high blood pressure, cholesterol ok, no heart or breathing issues, no sleep apnea. But it was only a matter of time before I did. Now I’ve lost weight they likely will never happen. Regardless of what we all say (& we will be pro surgery here even those who may have had issues), this has to be a decision only you can truely make not anyone else. You have to be ready to commit to this 100% as much of the successful weight loss & maintenance is mental. The surgery provides you a tool & a limited time of bonuses effects to help get you started but the majority of the work is what you will have to do yourself. It is not an easy out to weight loss. Meet with a surgeon & a therapist who specialises in supporting bariatric & disordered eating patients & ask your husband to accompany you to some appointments. He can ask questions then too which may alleviate some of his concerns. All the best whatever you choose to do.

3 Months Post Op….. and PREGNANT!?

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Yes, lots of women have become pregnant early on because of the hormonal flush of oestrogen post surgery from your weight loss. It can make you extra fertile. The pregnancy will slow your weight loss but it doesn’t mean it’s all over or you will gain lots of weight again. Check with your dietician about your nutritional needs during the pregnancy & keep regular appointments. You actually don’t need to consume that many additional calories - you’re not eating for two adults. The aches in your hips & back can be from your weight loss. It’s quite common. Some even talk about their balance being off & walking into walls, etc. Your centre of gravity is changing & your posture is improving. Your muscles, tensions & ligaments are relearning how to carry & hold your much smaller body. I used to kick my toes against my kitchen cabinets because my tummy was much smaller & didn’t reach the bench top before my feet anymore. So silly but was about being aware of my smaller body. A friend & I also found we’d initially slouched more because we didn’t have a tummy to prop us up anymore. We had to consciously adjust our posture & build up our core muscles. Try some gentle stretching & use some resistance bands. I do mine lying on the floor so not strenuous at all & some can be done sitting down. All the best.

    Should I have the surgery?

I 100% want the surgery. I’ve tried everything else and it’s the only way I’d lose weight and keep it off. However, I’m scared of complications that could leave my young kids without their mom or my family without income. But I could also do those things if I develop health issues because of my weight. I’m not at the point yet where my weight is causing significant health issues but I know it’s only a matter of time. I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons and I wanted to hear about the experiences of others

    Should I have the surgery?

Like the above poster mentioned, it is your decision end of the day since you'll have to embrace the lifestyle and whatever else that may come with the package of WLS! If you ask me, for me it was more than 100000% worth it. There is no way I would have been able to continue living had it not been for WLS. I have said this a few times out here but it is true that WLS has blew in a new life within me. And whatever good or bad (hoping for allll good only) may come in the future, I'll gladly embrace it than having to embrace the extra 100+ lbs of weight I have lost! Good luck with your decision!

    Should I have the surgery?

No. There are horror stories and every last one is true. They are on the rare side of surgery outcomes, but they happen. Heck, I almost died after a tonsillectomy (tonsil removal) when I was 4, which in retrospect I should have skipped. But the 99% of folks it's not an issue for it was a great decision. Only you can decide if it is worth it. If you're looking for us to decide for you, then NO it is not worth it. Have weight loss diet's EVER worked for you? In the long run? I'd say no, since you are here asking us if WLS is worth it. I was over 1/4 ton overweight and still believed I could do it without surgery. I had lost large chunks of it before gaining it back and then some. Then I realized I was deluding myself to believe I could lose it and keep it off. Eventually, I then decided WLS was my last resort since everything else failed eventually. I committed 100% to WLS and in 2.5 years lost every last pound and then some. I lost 500+ pounds and it stayed lost. I had surgery, and had all sorts of pain early post-op. Over time I lost 500+ pounds and was more than happy. After 20+ years I am still a normal BMI. I still follow my plan, and still deliriously happy. The horror stories are all true for those rare people. Fortunately, they were not true for me. Even if they were, I was prepared to deal with it. I would have been crazy not to take this last chance. It's up to you to decide what cost you are willing to pay. You may not think the cost is worth it now, so you should wait. Eventually, it will be worth the cost, then you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. This is up to you and not random people on the internet. Good luck. Tek
  15. I’ve been thinking about bariatric surgery for a few years now. I was actually scheduled to get a sleeve a few years ago but my financing fell through at the last minute. I’ve been heavy my whole life and nothing has worked long term. I feel like it’s either surgery or be heavy my whole life. I want to get it but my partner doesn’t like the idea and my parents are super against it.. I’ve heard horror stories about complications. Should I have the surgery? Was it worth it? I’m 255 now but my highest weight was 278. The lowest I’ve ever gotten by diet and exercise was 211 (on keto which damaged my liver so I had to stop).
  16. As you found out, the programs endorsed by different surgeons vary greatly. The programs are guidelines, they will not work for everyone. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all M.O. Def speak to your nutritionist, though in the end, whatever he/she advises you to do may still not work for YOU. Best course of action is trial and error on your part (keeping in mind any advice your NUT gives you). Now is the time to get to know your body and it's responses to different stimuli. Then go from there. Further, what works for you today may not work for you tomorrow. Its an ongoing learning process. Good Luck! ❤️ Oh, and yeah, i hit "overload" many times during weight loss phase. Honestly, i still do sometimes, and i'm 4.5+ years out.

    Let's Collect Some Data!

This is a great idea but would love to see one more category added. The different bariatric procedures can greatly effect the rate of loss due to levels of restriction, absorption, etc. 1. Basics: GENDER, AGE (at time of surgery) , HEIGHT - F, 62, 5'5" 2. Total Weight lost in the 6 months BEFORE surgery (if any) - 6.5 LBS 3. Weight on DAY OF SURGERY. - 202.5 LBS 4. Weight at 1 MONTH POST surgery - 187.4 LBS 5. Weight at 3 MONTHs POST surgery - 170.8 LBS 6. Weight at 6 MONTHs POST surgery - TBD 7. Weight at 12 MONTHs POST surgery - TBD I had my VSG surgery on 3/3/23 have just hit my 4 month post-op. I currently weigh 162.4 for a total loss of 40.1 LBS in 4 months.
  18. Things have been going pretty smoothly since bypass surgery June 6. The stages from the surgeon and nutritionalist seem fairly accelerated (compared to others I've looked up in the Internet). I would have a bowl of cream of wheat (3/4 cup of water) or a single egg omelet (adding some cooked mushrooms or shredded smoked salmon). All fine. The canned vegetables are pretty insipid but I don't feel like I'm ready for "raw" veggies and overcooked veggies (steamed) are kinda like the canned stuff- To celebrate my passage into regular food, I took a smoked turkey leg, reheated it, then stripped all skin and tendons off, leaving me with 1/2-3/4 cup of shredded meat. It was too much! I discovered what you folks call the "foamies"-- horrible. If I could have just puked and emptied my stomach, I would have been happy, but oh, no, all that came up was that dreaded froth. I was in major discomfort for hours and wound up falling asleep sitting up. Next day, I decided to go back to basics- just protein drink, Gatorade Zero, a little hummus and 1/2 my usual portion of cream of wheat. I'm now setting up a call with the nutritionist- interestingly, his plan disclaims any recommended portion size. And when I've looked at the internet, every plan is different, with different ranges of portions. I feel much better having gotten through that experience of foamies- whether it was the density of the meat, the quantity, or the smoked flavor, I have no idea but I'm gonna stay away from smoked meats, at least for now. Because I had a hiatal hernia repair, any sort of heavy lifting, sit-ups, etc. are taboo. I am walking (ironically, the mega grocery stores provide me with a venue for that since here in Texas, it's been over 100 degrees F until a couple days ago. Typical Texas summer). So, two questions: 1.portion size- we'll see what the nutritionist says; and 2.did most of you hit overload at some point on your journey? I have been losing weight. I definitely look and feel better, easier to walk without getting winded, etc. My best to all, Deep6

    DS Buddies Wanted - 26 Y/O

I understand the pain of trying to find a surgeon! I've been trying for the last two years to find a surgeon that would even touch me because I'm not actually having the DS done for weight loss (Although that is a really amazing benefit of it) I had a Nissen fundoplication done in 2005 that has failed and no surgeon wants to revise another's work here locally, so I'm going back and forth 5.5 hours each way to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. So I have a huge learning curve as this wasn't even something I thought was an option until my doctor told me it was his plan to fix me so that I'd have a chance at normalcy again. I'm just looking forward to being able to eat something with flavor. Everything gives me heartburn at this point (including certain brands of bottled water) it's nuts. I basically eat potato soup every day because I know it's something I can handle. I'm hopeful as we get closer and I learn more. But I have also come to the conclusion that some of this will just be embracing the suck.
  20. Hey guys, Apologies for not updating this thread. I've been personally struggling with this weight loss despite everything. I've lost a bit more weight, but even with the help of the dietician, the weight loss is incredibly slow and it's still making me feel like a failure. On average it seems like I lose about 3 pounds a month despite the high protein intake, small meals, liquids and exercise. Today I woke up feeling particularly upset, as I started a 4 mile walking challenge to see if I could walk four miles every day for a week (in the morning). Today is Wednesday (day 3) and before i started walking, I decided to weigh myself. I've put on 2 and a half pounds since this SATURDAY just gone! I weighed myself yesterday morning too and I've put on a pound since then. I won't lie. I just burst into tears. I feel like i've been doing everything right. I'm burning around 3500 calories a day, according to my Fitbit watch. I'm eating/drinking between 50-80g of protein. I'm drinking my 2 liters of liquids and I'm still eating from a side plate, always prioritizing the protein first. I'm doing everything, but I feel like my body is rebelling against me. Everything in my being is telling me to start fasting and to start doing liquid diets/slimfast shakes again, but because I have a history of eating disorders, I don't want to lean back into old habits in order to lose weight. I bought slimfast meals two weeks and did the liquid diet/pouch reset for two days and lost a pound and a half - but I don't want to rely on only having liquids in order to lose weight. I've been loitering between 243-240lbs for over a MONTH now with no budge. I'm so disappointed in myself and it feels like all the exercise i'm doing is in vain. Has anyone gone through similar? Edited to add: My goal weight is 215lbs. Being bigger/curvy runs in my family, and I actually like being a little bigger as I find curves attractive so I purposely did not want to be unrealistic when setting my final goal. I've read elsewhere on the forum that weight loss can be harder when you're getting nearer to your goal or when you're in the last 20-30lbs of weight loss. Is this true?

Ah, man, I'm sorry... Plenty of people lose a lot of weight with the sleeve. I hope they can get everything figured out for you.

    January 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello everyone! Where are my January 2022 Surgery Buddies? I'm just checking in with all of you! How is everyone doing? I've lost 75 lbs so far, so I'm super proud. I want to lose another 25 lbs and then I will be satisfied. Although, I have to admit, if I would not lose any more weight, I would still be happy with how I am now. I feel good and when I look at myself, I "look good" and healthy. So in my book, I'm already a winner! I've never been so happy! The only regret I have is not doing this sooner! Check in and tell us how you are doing!
  23. I am 58 years old and I have Afib, I also had rheumatic fever when I was a teenager and I have some valve issues. I am a diabetic ( or was ), and wear a CPAP. I had my surgery on 6/5/23. Within a day from the surgery I stopped taking the diabetes medication (after 15 years). I keep checking my blood sugar, and everything is perfect. I have no idea why and how this happened. My CPAP pressure decreased, they told me at the hospital that eventually I will no longer need the CPAP machine. I had no Afib episodes since the surgery. The gastric bypass requires a lifelong commitment of multivitamins, minerals and nutrients due to malabsorption. I tried about 8 separate diets prior to committing to this surgery and I always gained back the weight. The education I received prior to the gastric bypass at Mayo Clinic explained why we always gain the weight back when dieting. I have no issues with the microbiome, I take pre and probiotics daily. I think that this surgery is the best decision of my life and the best thing I could have done for my heart. I knew that this will be so when a doctor told me the same thing years ago, that he got the gastric bypass and it was the best thing he did for himself in his entire life. It is a tough decision and a life commitment but the benefits exceed the struggles. I was like you, I doubted my decision until the morning of the surgery. I am really happy that I went through with it!
