Alcoholic Drink Recommendation
iggychic replied to Gastricsleeve4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Despite what people think, white or red wine has very low carbs (both are about the same at 4 per glass). Sangria is high in sugar as is cranberry juice. I'd sip a white wine and enjoy it. Riesling from Germany is lower in alcohol by the way than other whites. So it won't go to your head as fast. -
Pre-op liquid diet struggle!
Melinda Brown Armstrong replied to Deneshia Larkins's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is scheduled for Tuesday and I was placed on a 7-day liquid diet. I have cheated on three of the days. My fear is my liver will not have shrunk at all. If I go the next three days without eating, will my liver swhrink fast? -
On the 28th, I will have been banded for 8 months. I cant believe it. It has gone so very fast. I have lost about 67 pounds. I say about because every day is different but most days I am around 191. My goal is 155. I feel better than I have in years. I am wearing 14 and 16 pants. I have lost 30 inches all over my body. I still have a way to go but so much better than I was. So much healthier. SO thankful and blessed. I love my band. Not every day, not every week has been easy but I would not trade it, I would recomend it to any one. The doc says in a few weeks, he wants me to go on a low cal low fat "rotation diet" so I can get the last 35ish pounds off. When I get there, he wants to do small fills a half a cc at a time till I can eat 4-6 small meals a day be satisfied and not starved inbetween. He said that is the key to long term loss and keeping it off. He says if I am hungry I wont keep it off, it is too hard for any one long term. Hope all is well. Hope every one else feels as blessed as I do. God bless and Good luck.

Thats great hope you have a fast and safe recovery. By the way, who's your doctor? -
I finally get my initial consultation with my surgeon on October 2 so it is coming up fast. I am trying to be as prepared as I can be. I know something will be missed because there will never be a perfect appointment where I will leave knowing everything, but I want to know as much as I need to. What are questions you asked your surgeon or you think I should ask mine? Ideas will help me prepare. I know one thing I need to bring up to him is the fact that I already have acid reflux so from what I read here the sleeve is probably out of the question.

Is It Nornal to Lose So Little in the Beginning?
Escape_Pod replied to TigerLily's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know it's frustrating to read about people who seem to be losing HUGE amounts of weight in the first month or two, if you're not one of them. But honestly, there are so many factors that go into how much you'll lose and how fast. Men lose faster (damn them!). People with a higher starting BMI lose faster. Younger people seem to me to lose faster. People who didn't have a larger pre-op loss seem to lose faster initially (because the first 10 pounds of any weight loss is mostly water). Some people who are losing faster may be losing muscle mass as well as fat, which will slow down their weight loss later (because muscle mass makes your resting metabolism higher). And some people stall earlier, some people stall later. What's important to remember is, you will lose the weight. It may take longer to come off for some of us (I lost about 15 pounds the first month, 10 the second, and 7 so far in the 3rd month), but it's going to come off, and it will come off consistently, without you feeling like you're starving all the time, and it's going to stay off. Yes, maybe you've been on crash diets where you lost faster, for a little while, and how long did that last? Stick to your surgeon's plan, give your body the liquids and protein it needs (you want to keep the protein up so you maintain muscle mass, which will keep your metabolism from slowing down), take a deep breath, and remember it's not a race, and it's not a diet. This is for the rest of your life. You want to be learning good eating and exercise habits, and learning how to live with your new sleeve and eat for life, not live to eat. And if you're still feeling like a slow loser, check out this thread on slow users unite - you're in good company, and it's full of people who are successful sleevers! http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/11308-the-good-thing-about-being-a-slow-loser/ -

Very Worried I May Have Something Wrong
Suzette456 replied to Debbie Logie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Nothing wrong. That is what life is going to be like from now on. It means: 1) you ate something that you should not. I have this problem when I try to eat a french fry or white bread. It has been long enough now so that I can eat 4 or 5 French fries, as long as I chew it with lettuce for vegetables before I swallow it. The food that you find that you can just never eat varies by person. 2) You did not chew thoroughly enough. 3) You ate too fast. It still takes discipline to eat what you should. I can have a taco salad from my local Mexican restaurant, and have no problems at all, .. and eat a larger portion of it than I expect o. I can eate a piece of pizza as long as I chew it very slowly, and chew with a few pieces of lettuce before I swallow. At one point I actually ordered a pizza on a cold winter day, tired, no groceries in the house. I was able to eat one piece of pizza out of it, and froze the rest individually. When I reheated it, it did not stay down. I defrosted it at room temperature, and reheated it at a high degree of heat in my oven, but did not work. I don;t understand that, but .... I don't order pizza. Pizza is truly a treat under the right circumstances, nice and hot, not leftover, etc. Now that it has been a few years, I find that I am going back to what I ate before, which is higher in carbs. I have whole grain, no sugar Cereal with unsweetened soy for Breakfast. Much higher in carbs than the Meal Replacement beverage. I feel like this is the downfall of the whole "let's get banded" craze. ... folllow up afterward. It would be grand to discuss what is appropriate to eat, and what is not appropriate to eat in this forum. -
overthinking things....right
MichiganChic replied to lucy0911's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Better check the definition of plateau, and adjust your expectations. If you expect to lose a pound a day, you are most certainly going to be disappointed. WLS is not a magic guarantee of steady and rapid weight loss. As time goes on, you'll learn how your body releases weight - but a human body can only lose so fast. Thinking that losing 3 pounds in 5 days is slow, a stall, or a plateau is only going to frustrate you. You're doing great - you'll see! -
Will I definately lose weight???
kellyw74 replied to JELLYBEANS's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt the same way as you. I remember thinking will this even work for me? I can not fail another time! I was so scared about having 85% of my stomach removed just to not lose weight. My dr. assured me that I would be a GREAT success with the sleeve because I had been successful losing in the past, I just could not keep it off! I needed something that gave me restriction and now I have it! When you can only eat 2 oz at a time, you WILL lose weight! There is no way you can't!! Trust me, you WILL!! If and when you go to a fast food place, you will not be able to eat like you do now, so the thought of putting 2 wraps in your sleeve will not be an issue because if you try, you WILL throw up! You might one day be able to do one, but not two!! My dr. told me that I will be able to eat again, BUT NEVER like I did before! I will NEVER be able to eat 5 pieces of pizza at one time again. I will NEVER be able to eat fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuts, corn & green Beans at one sitting again. I will never be able to go to a buffet and gorge like I did before. I am fine with that. I will however, be able to eat A donut one day again, but I don' t know that I want to. I think the sleeve (for me anyway) changed my thinking! I am 10 weeks out and I really don't want to eat **** anymore. I want healthy things and have not eaten ANYTHING "bad" since 5 months before my surgery. As far as not losing tho, it is enevitable. You will lose because you eat so little. Now, you can't just sit on the couch forever and expect it to just fall off. I have to work very hard for every pound I want to lose. However, I am very close to goal too. Follow your dr.'s guidelines and you will do great!! Kelly -

Not feeling so good today, I have a constant pain in my side that's getting me down, I see the consultant next week and will check on it. My weight stalled for over a week, but started again and I lost 3 more pounds this week. Seemingly stalls happen a lot, reading up on it, it seems that if your not eating enough protein and drinking enough water then it can happen. Some people suggest upping calories for a couple of days then reducing them right down and it shocks the body into moving again. I tried chicken tonight in small chunks but ate it too fast and it got stuck, God did I feel ill. 🤢 Will try the m&s soups. Hope your feeling ok as well. Xx -

I'm eating a lot of fish, eggs, diced chicken and protein bars. I Have just gone into week 4. I think the dumping was because I ate something too fast and it came back up. And another time I ate an oaty choclate buiscuits. I ate it then ran to the toilet and lost it immediately. Still eating 6 smallish meals a day and looking forward to eating normally 3 times a day. Have you drank any alcohol? I had a very small glass of wine and was ok. -

Is some pain with restriction normal?
DavidK replied to DavidK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It does seem to be an issue of eating too fast, I was chewing correctly, but I need to put more time between bites. Thank you all so much for your replies. -
Hi Everyone, I had my orientation last Thursday. We then received our next appointment which mine is with the Psych for February 26th. They said this process will go as fast as we want it to, however I feel sooo discouraged sometimes with the length in between the appointments. I started the pre op diet (not liquid) the very day after orientation so that I can show progress. I’m on Day 5, and haven’t gone off of the diet. It’s been rough! But what makes it even more difficult is the fact that I haven’t even met my surgeon yet or have a weight loss goal. Everyone keeps saying he will take in my beginning weight into consideration when creating a goal weight. I’m hoping that I can be enough on track for him to say “let’s get you scheduled with the case manager”. I went to my first support group so I have that crossed off my list. I just REALLY want this and can’t wait for the surgery to get here. However the not knowing anything makes me feel like I am walking in the dark:(. I hope I’m not starting this pre op diet too early. Any advice?

You look great, Cindy! Hope those pounds fall off fast for you, here. You look so confident in your new suit. I had to go buy a new suit and I do NOT look that happy wearing it. LOL I rush from the locker room to the shower to the pool and get in the Water as soon as I can. And I feel like everybody is staring at me as I struggle back out of the pool. It's horrid. There's no way you guys are getting a picture of ME in a suit. LOL Wait until I hit goal (or at LEAST "normal") and I'll consider it. I think you look fantastic!

So, my doc requires a clean screen to even start the process. Im sure I will be tested again pre op. I have heard some docs will cancel as it increases risk of surgery and healing. That being said, how fast its out of your system depends on you...age..metabolism..how much you smoked. It coyld be as little as 3-5...or as long as 2 weeks to a month. I had a urine test...drank a lot of water, took niacin and cranberry tablets, and did not smoke for 16 days and was clean. I was a light smoker and was probably clean eaflier than 16 days but I did t want to risk a dirty test as it would have delayed me another 30 days. Good luck!!

Anyone from Great Britain
Jeaniered replied to Jeaniered's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much I appreciate you taking the time to go through this with me. I seen my doc 5 years ago and asked for help, he said he would look into it but didn't. I nagged him but got no where. In the end I have had to pay privately, even though I had a number of ailments that supported me getting it done on nhs. I went to Nuffield hospital in Leicester, they were very good, though the anethnatist was an ignorant pig!! I didn't have too much pain afterwards and got out the next day. Suffered a bit from sickness and gas but it all got better but now I have a pain in my left side that comes and goes, it gets worse if I walk too much, it's like toothache, not so much in my stomach or where incisions are but more in my side where my ribs are? I must admit I didn't really stick with puréed stage and have gone onto soft foods quickly. If I eat too fast I suffer, usually have to make myself sick! At moment I'm struggling to eat 800 calories and trying hard to get protein in. I've lost 35 pounds so far. Hairs ok, but have got some great thickening shampoo that really seems to be helping and doc is going to put my vitamins on prescription. I get that taste too, doesn't make me throw up, just a horrible taste and end up sucking a sugar free mint. I will get the book and thanks for the tip on clothes. I will take your advice. My husband did buy my a lovely size 16 dress for my birthday as an incentive. Otherwise, I've picked up a couple of things in the sales but will hold off as you suggest. Thanks again, lovely to talk to you x -
Emotional hunger vs physical hunger - how do you deal with this??
juliegeraci replied to Bandwagon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Solid protein will really help you stay focused. It will keep you from snacking because it keeps you fuller fast. I must say my emotional eating has changed dramatically. I no longer binge like I use to. good luck. -
Nausea every time I eat - 3-4 weeks post op
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 replied to loveflowers's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi @loveflowers Man, you weight is coming off fast! It is so great you can get the protein shakes in. Have you tried protein soups? Hot and savoury, which makes a great change from the often-sweet shakes. And yogurt is good too - some of my earliest variety was adding flavour to plain yogurt - sweet chilli, chipotle... Your surgical team will have good advice - it does come right, but sometimes takes a little time. And the diarrhoea-then-constipation is very very common! Again, it usually comes right... Nice to see you here - the support makes all the difference...
