I believe this article regarding vegetarian/vegan Protein powders has been linked before on here: http://www.peta.org/living/food/pump-workouts-vegan-protein-powder/

    Lunch Ideas

I take a veggie burger some salsa and a cheese stick for lunch. Sometimes I do black beans, cheddar, salsa, and plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. I also take a couple slices of cheese and roll it up with vegetarian deli meats sometimes.
  5. With The band I cannot tolerate meat at all. I'm not a vegetarian, not even sure what the true definition is anymore. When I was at my Dr.s last week, he asked me if I was getting any "Regurgitation" I told him I cannot tolerate any meats, that they always get stuck. He said that is not unusual at all, and did not relate it to my band being too tight or anything. Just taht it was very normal and sees it all the time. So I call myself the "Incidental Vegetarian"
  6. I trust mine but I have had several horrible nutritionist in the past. Prior to looking into WLS I saw 3 separate nutritionist. One insane lady kept asking me to eat chicken breast even after I had explained I was vegetarian. The worst one was one I was sent to by my endocrinologist. Once she started telling people it was okay to drink diet soda, I knew I was done with her. I then saw a holistic nutritionist who I really liked. Unfortunately her practice was nearly 2 hours away and she was too pricey for my budget. Finding a program that was willing to actually have a conversation with me about food options and work with my allergies & vegetarianism was a deal breaker. I don't like to eat a lot of processed and artificial foods no matter what the calorie count. I needed someone who understood and could accept that. If I felt that wasn't going to happen I would have kept researching programs. I do think you we need to take some responsibility and do a little research on our own, but I expected to have a reasonable conversation with my nutritionist. I like and trust the person I have now, but I understand why many don't. Speaking for my self, I am limited in what knowledge I can share in an online forum. When someone post that they aren't losing but they are following a good eating plan, however they also have medical issues, I think the wise thing to do is direct them to their medical team or nutritionist. It's not a cop out, it's just understanding the limitations of how much support you can provide in an online forum like this.

    Able to eat an egg?

I'm not even 3 weeks out. Today I ate 1/2 CUP of egg salad & a whole cup each of vegetarian chili & also cottage cheese. Not all at the same time, but over the course of 3 meals. I guess everyone is different.
  8. Hi, I'm on mushy stage and my doctor expects me to have two protein shakes per day. My protein goal is 70 grams per day. I don't know much about isolates. My doctor has never mentioned this. I'm vegetarian so I use soy protein.
  9. Okay, FYE, I might be working on my meat consumption. From the original fast diet site. That second paragraph says it all! Vive the Veg-olution! Lots of buzz about at the moment around ‘demi-veg’ and part-time vegetarians (or ‘flexitarians’ – one of those clunky words that may well never take off, even if the activity does). Last week, the International Development Committee pointed to increased meat consumption as a catalyst for recent global food crises. And we all know that too much meat (particularly of the processed variety) is linked to all kinds of health issues. One recent European study found that the biggest consumers of processed meat increased their risk of death from heart disease by 72% and cancer by 11%. The World Cancer Research Fund advises limiting intake of red meat because of its links to bowel cancer. By contrast, a six-year study published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association and reported in the London Evening Standard found that ‘the mortality rate among vegetarians was 12 per cent lower than in omnivores, while demi-veggies had an 8 per cent lower death rate than meat eaters’. This really is food for thought – and it fits in neatly with The Fast Diet mantra of ‘mostly Plants and Protein’. Filling your plate with veg at the expense of meat, even for two days a week, could have a significant effect on your health, your waistline, your pocket and – yes – the planet. As Einstein once said, ‘Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.’ Perhaps full-time vegetarianism is too seismic a shift for some of us, but we could all do with moving towards more plant Proteins, legumes, herbs, veggies. And, really, there’s no sacrifice. A veg-based meal relies on spicing, texture, colour, crunch – and once you’re in the zone, it’s not so hard to come up with great meatless meals (there are tons of ideas in The Fast Diet Recipe Book of course). I had lunch at Ottolenghi in Notting Hill a fortnight ago: bliss on a plate, and no meat, not a sausage. As the Standard says, maybe it’s time to join the vegolution?

    Protein target recommendation?

Today was a really good food day for me. I'm vegetarian but if you adjusted it, you could easily hit over 60 gms and keep calories low. Breakfast - 1 large egg, ¼cup shredded cheese, Cup of coffee using vanilla Protein powder instead of creamer - 286 calories 38gm protein. (I wait a ½ an hour between food and coffee) lunch - ½ cup frozen chopped spinach, ½ tbsp of rotel diced tomatoes with chilies to season, 3 ounces diced chicken breast - 126 calories, 20gms of protein Snack - Nuts Pistachios are my nuts of choice. Good protein, healthy fat, nice bit of crunch. Try the Wonderful - Roasted and Salted Pistachios- Single Serving Pack. Nuts are my weakness so I only buy the single serving packs and I only buy them 1 at a time. 1.25 Oz - 100 calories, 4 gms of protein dinner - ½ cup of romaine, Target - Market Pantry - Corn & Black Bean Chunky Salsa, 1 Tbsp, 3 ounces of Grilled Chicken Breast, dressed with ½ tbsp of olive oil - 13 calories, 18 gms of protein Totals for the day: 626 calories 16 carbs, 80 gms of protein. In between drink all the Water you can. You could also swap out the egg from breakfast for something more filling like steel cut oats and add the protein powder in that. It will easily keep you full until lunch. I'm not a big early morning eater, so light meals work best for me. Things like steel cut oat and romaine lettuce will also help prevent constipation. Especially if you make sure to get in a minimum of 64 ounces of fluids. I used to aim for 24 ounce in the morning 24 ounces in the afternoon and another 24 ounces before bed. I carry a water bottle everywhere I go and sip all day long.

    Any banded vegetarians??

Not a vegetarian, but I haven't had pork, beef or lamb in 23 years. I do eat chicken and turkey occasionally but I eat a ton of fish and seafood so that helps with the Protein. I'm not banded yet, but I make good use of Morningstar farm products- "burgers", crumbles, and Breakfast items. Hoping I can continue to eat these at some point post op. There is a local vegan manufacturer here in Chicago that makes a seitan crumble that tastes just like Italian Sausage. I have been putting that into Pasta sauce and eating it over spaghetti squash. I also threw it into a bean soup I made the other day- very tasty! I love all kinds of Asian food, so I keep the veggie potstickers and frozen Asian Vegetable Mix from Trader Joe's on hand at pretty much all times. They also carry marinated extra firm tofu in a bunch of flavors. They are great for stir frys and salads. Another favorite is Trader Joe's breaded eggplant cutlets. Baked, not fried and fantastic for making a quick psuedo-eggplant parmesean. I do get most of my protien from Beans. Never been a big fan of eggs although I have found myself forcing them down more than in the past. I've been making some scrambles with egg beaters, spinach, a little cheese and tons of hot sauce and that has proven to be a filling breakfast option. Good luck to you! kagead
  12. Hi! Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Michelle. I am a 33-year old single mom of a 2 1/2-year old who I had made a promise to when I was pregnant that by the time she was 3 I would be healthy and no longer embarrassed to wear shorts, tank tops, and maybe even a swimsuit out in public. So far, I've accomplished the first two!! The first time I put on a tank top and walked into the Walgreens in my town, I was sooooo excited and proud! I am currently 15 1/2 weeks post-op and down 68 pounds! I haven't been at this weight for over 10 years! It's been amazing as well as trying. Luckily the issues I've run into are probably just because it's only been a few months since my surgery and my "pouch" (I hate that word--I say tiny tummy) is still adjusting. I have a few more obstacles than the average person who had the roux-en-y surgery in that I have some "mental illnesses" (hate those words too!), I'm a vegetarian, and I'm an extreeeemely picky eater (and since the surgery, that has just gotten worse--suddenly foods taste different--and not in a good way! In one sense that's good, but in the sense that I need lots of Protein and I'm not getting enough, it's not.). My main hurdle, however, has been keeping foods down. My doc thinks it's just because my medications have possible side effects of nausea and vomiting and/or that my tiny tummy is still adjusting. But, I wondered if it could have anything to do with the enormous amount of drainage I've been having probably due to allergies, because when my food comes up, lots of (sorry) mucus comes with it. Anyone else have this problem?? This is why I am excited to join this support group. To get answers, to get to know other people in my position, to share my experiences, to hopefully help other people, and to inquire on what is yet to come.
  13. Hi all! I have been banded for 2 years but due to several surgeries and medical complications have not been able to be filled or really lose weight . So now I **finally** got my fill and am feeling pretty good with a good amount of restriction. However, I am a vegetarian and am having problems finding ways to get enough Protein in without heavy loading on the cheese. I love cheese, which is what I always relied on for protein and is a huge reason that I needed the band in the first place! I have been eating yogurt and baked Beans for protein but wanted some other ideas. :help: I hate the Protein shakes and they make me start to gag so please don't tell me that those are my only option! Thanks!

    Non Dairy Protein

My dietician recommends Vega One for vegetarian/vegans. I always have trouble with whey protein so I'm switching over to Vega today. I had it before surgery too. It's a pea protein and is a little odd in terms of taste but there are plenty of flavors so you can find one you like. My go to is the Chocolate. You can get them on Amazon and they're in retail stores too. I've seen it at Target, Kroger, and Whole foods. Hope this helps! Sent from my SM-G988U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. Find your balance. Keep track of what foods you eat. I know I've had to change my diet every so often, because your body will get used to certain calories and foods and stop burning fat. Change up your Protein intake. Maybe go vegetarian for a week with Protein shakes. Try eating your biggest meal at lunch. I just started doing this and the weight loss kicked back into gear. Try to drink more Water during the day. And most important to me was eating something small like a spoon full of Peanut Butter or a little cottage cheese 1/4 cup ect. before bed. It keeps your body in fat burning mode instead of storing mode.

High Protein Vegan/Vegetarian Options for Us

I was looking for a vegetarian thread here and saw Tiffy's list. I got Alicia Silverstone's new book The Kind Diet and I want to try again to limit my meat and dairy. I know I will have to concentrate on the protein and still have my whey protein shakes, (they really help control hunger for me), but needed to hear from other sleevers that are vegan. I switched to vegan last year and lost weight and felt great! I was not a full vegan but only had fish, soy milk instead of milk and cheeses. Publix had some good selections but know I will have to get more creative with recipes if I want to stay on it. I loved that the book had three different levels to try and didn't have to jump right in with the strict guidelines, like "flirting" to full vegan. My main reason is the method of killing our animals with no respect for them and expect that meat to nourish our bodies. Then there is the issue of hormones and antibiotics which we and our children do not need. It is a small thing I can do. Thanks again Tiffy for the links.

    Vegetarian Recipes

I have tried going vegetarian a few times and I really love eating that way, but I have a hard time eating vegetables. I have no problem with meat. I don't eat as much meat as I used to and may eventually end up following a vegetarian diet in the future. I ordered a Juicer the other day and I can't wait for it to come in. I am looking forward to juicing lots of vegetables and fruits! I am ready to get in some great nutrients without having to struggle with eating it. I have never attempted going vegan though. I followed a Lacto-Ovo vegetarian diet a while back and it worked well for me. Good luck, everyone!
  18. I was always a "super sniffer" and it never really bothered me. If anything, I feel like having a stronger taste of sense and smell made me a better cook. That said, yes, I'm definitely more sensitive to all smells post op and it's about a thousand times worse being pregnant on top of that! And meat is especially hard for me. I've had to sort of re-learn normal with this one, but will admit that even the faintest "off" scent makes me pitch the entire package. I'm always careful to wash meat to be sure I'm smelling the meat itself and not the old blood or packaging. And I've become a bit of a fanatic about cleaning my refrigerators because they can get stale and hold smells in quite easily. I super clean mine about once a week, when I do my shopping. There have been times I could tell without even opening the package that something was off and have been proven right when my doubting mother-in-law or husband open the package to check for themselves. Consider it a super power? I spent many years as a vegetarian but did eat meat prior to surgery. Now that I'm expecting meat makes me completely ill, so I'm pretty sure I'll only be an occasional meat eater in the future. I don't care for the smell of it either raw or cooking. Sometimes I can eat it if someone else prepares it but prefer to avoid it now. There are plenty of ways to get Protein without it, so long as I'm careful about my diet, so I don't worry too much. Good luck and I hope you find a solution that keeps you both happy. ~Cheri

    Vegetarian Banders?

Hi, I've been a vegetarian for about 25 years now. I have not ate ANY meat in that many years, don't even remember what it tastes like! No Meat, Chicken, Fish or anything. I am due to be banded in 8 days. We'll have to stay in contact and compare progress and share band vegi recipes.

    Eating Is A Chore Now!

It will get better everyone. There is a really common occurance called water nausau (I always spell that wrong.) But if you put a little juice or crystal light in it, that will help it go down better. Also string cheese and greek yogurt is awesome for mushy food that is satisfying. But that will depend on your lactose tolerance. I have also used lactaid a lot because it is just easier on my stomach than regular milk. If you like indian food, you can also try the tandoori freezer meals (just stay away from the rice part.) They have vegetarian paneer tikka masala that uses tofu instead of chicken and its a spinach mushy consistancy (like a lot of indian food). I've found dense meats can be hard on the stomach. If you do try meat, go for dark meat cause its easier to get down. Also mashed up avacado and small pieces of lightly cooked shrimp soaked in lime juice work really well with a mushy diet and taste great. These are just some tips that worked really well for me. I hope maybe they will help you too. OH and one other thing a book i have says, which is totally true for me, is to drink something warm in the morning cause it will help gentle waken your stomach and prep it for liquids and food. I usually either have some decaf coffee or warm instant cream of wheat using light soymilk and sugar free syrup.

How much protein are the fellow vegetarian sleevers getting each day?
  23. First time posting here, but I've been lurking for awhile. I'm self-pay and scheduled with Dr. Illan in Mexico for May 12. Feeling very calm and not nervous about the surgery itself...but I worry that I'll be the one this doesn't work for. Has anyone else felt that way?? About me 5'2", 47 years old, 295 pounds. I've been overweight since I was maybe 10 or so. Childhood pictures show a normal-sized child, but I don't remember not being fat. I was over 200 in high school, probably 250 or so before/after my two pregnancies, and been 275-295 for the last 15-20 years. That's were my weight seems to want to be; on the one hand, I can pretty much eat whatever, and I don't go up anymore; but on the other hand, it's pretty impossible to lose anything, and it always resettles in the 275-295 range. I've been a vegan/vegetarian for over 10 years (first 5 vegan, now vegetarian). Before that I did Atkins and lost 80 pounds (but was also pretty much starving myself...it was Atkins in name only). Since then, I've done WW, superfood diets, blah blah blah. You know the drill. I have Hashimoto's, which I'm sure plays a role in all this (I was diagnosed at hypothyroid about 16 years ago, and Hashi's about 5 years ago). I am treated properly for my thyroid and it is technically right where it should be. I'm excited about having the sleeve because I feel like, from everything I've read, this will be the tool that gets me where I want to be. I love to eat healthy foods (though I eat bad ones, too, for sure), and wish I could be more active without the pain, so in theory this should all work for me. But...I can't picture it. I don't know what it's like to be a healthy weight. What if my body can't do that, no matter how hard I try (so far it hasn't, afterall!). I feel like this is my last chance, so what if it doesn't work? These are my worries :/ I'll be the one it doesn't work for... My goals are really just to be healthier, to avoid diabetes (I'm pre-diabetic now) and heart disease, to be able to go backpacking and walking and do all the things I want to do. I have a vague idea that I'll be able to fit into smaller clothes, and that would be fun (I've never in my life bought something that was actually cool or fun to wear or fashionable). I hope to lose a lot of weight, and I'm 100% willing to do the work. But....I've done the work before and been frustrated when nothing happens. So that is my worry and my fear. Has anyone else ever felt that way? Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my rambles...
  24. EXACTLY! My doctor said it's a slippery slope when you try a Protein bar and get the taste for "candy" bar or more sugar in general. Granted, most of us have more restraint than that -- but if you're prone to grazing or cheats, Protein Bars could be a gateway food. As for protein guidelines, my doctor gave me a 32-page "manifesto" that says aim for 60grams daily for the first two weeks, of course most people only get 30-40 in the first few days. Whey protein ISOLATE is ideal, though there are great soy alternatives if you're vegetarian or lactose intolerant. That's why I like Syntrax nectar and unjury, they have 20-24g per servings and like I said, if you get them in tubs you can do more than one scoop. Syntrax also has sample packs that are great for on-the-go in your purse or car. Just keep a Blender Bottle, find some Water and voila - protein drink! Once you hit mushies in week three, they encourage you to aim for 70-90g of protein. This is easier to hit once you get to solid foods in month two. Oh, and these numbers are for women. Men sometimes need 15-20% more protein simply for having higher metabolisms. Carbs should be below 40g and come from healthy vegetables and a minimum amount of fruits. Juices are not recommended for the first 3 months because of trying to kick the sugar-taste habit. Even with veggies, avoid high sugar ones like carrots, peas, beets and try for more greens (they have Fiber, to boot!) Also, watch your fats. My doc/nut want me to keep below 12g per day, but I do best when I stay under 20g (personally).
  25. flip - you're right, having stuff in the house makes it so much harder. i'm at home home and not my apartment, so i have my family's food here too. i am going to make a section of the fridge for myself, and only look there, i really think this will help... how about you do the same thing and we keep tabs on each other? if the people you live with are really understanding, you may be able to put foil over their parts of the fridge, so you don't immediately see temptation. i'm jewish, and at passover a lot of the non-Kosher for passover food is covered up or put away, and you don't go for it, so i think it could work! what do you think? also, if you talk to your doctor about your cheating, please let me know what s/he says about the liver and everything. i think you should definitely talk to the doc. i am the first person to say this, and i would talk to my doc, i'm just so afraid since they were annoyed before that they will be like, forget it... and i want the surgery so badly. we can also trade tips here for the diet. i am a vegetarian, so i do not do chicken, but i have made the broth with noodles and then strained it, it's hard... you're like... oh, just one bite!! why don't you make a soup from scratch with your standard mirepoix, which is onion, celery, carrot, some herbs and spices... and then strain it all... it will have amazing flavor and not just some crap from a packet... i'm going to shop soon and i'm going to do that... does anyone know if it is ok to puree vegetables into soup, a la gazpacho, or if that is not ok?
