Getting the ball rolling - Newbie!

*Do you guys ever fear you're going to "mess" it up? I'm afraid of slipping occuring, which is why I chew everything until it's liquid before I swallow. This is next to impossible with meat, so I'm basically vegetarian, not by choice. Trust me- after that surgery, there is NO WAY I will "mess" it up intentionally! *Is the sliming and getting stuff stuck, is that frequent? Does it happen forever? How do you cope with it, especially in public? I had my band placed December 30th and have yet to experience sliming or stuff getting stuck. Perhaps this is merely an issue once the port has been filled. I have another 4 weeks before this occurs, though. *Speaking of in public, how do you eat with out being noticed when you're out with coworkers or friends? Opt for Soup. No one will say anything, because many "normal" eaters get soup for an entree anyway. You could also opt for a salad, once you're allowed to eat solid foods again. Not to sound rude, but, chances are, if you were approved for the LB, you aren't exactly the skinny kid who can get away with eating a cheeseburger and fries. Opting for healthier choices wont look suspicious, no matter how little you eat!

    topamax & migraines

So my neurologist put me on topomax (or is it topamax?) for my migraines and last night was my first dose (before bedtime). He forewarned me that the most common side effect was appetite loss, and i just shrugged it off because big deal, right? Well no. Being banded for me means I do not get hungry. I have to remind myself to eat, so a drug that surpresses my already non-existent appetite is no biggie, or so I thought. I realized a half hour ago that today I had 2 cappacinos (yes, I know we arent' supposed to have caffeine, but I'm a bad girl), less than a cup of salad w/ vinagarette dressing, less than a 1/4c of pulled pork (just plain), and that was it. UHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhm, thats so not me. I have no desire to lose weight the unhealthy way. Anyone can force themselves to stop eating, and what good does it do? Eventually you fall off the wagon and binge an then -pow- all your weight is right back on. I chose to eat healthy. I never deprive myself of things---NEVER. Even chocolate, sugar, soda, whatever. I just hold myself accountable for it. For instance, if I have to give into my temptation and eat half a package of m-n-ms (220cals for 1/2; 440 for whole), I know that for dinner I better be eating fish or chicken breast and it better be dry, no pretty sauces for me, gotta keep the calories down. This forces me to forego the m-n-ms (my weakness) because I love to cook and I love to have fab dinners, not boring "I'm on a diet" dinners. Its all give and take. I eat not so good things in moderation and am sure to fill the rest of my day with exceptionally healthy things. Which, is really easy for me since I could probably be a vegetarian if need be. Like if tomorrow meat sky rocketed in price, it wouldn't bother me, I just would eat more broccoli & spinach <3 Anywho, I am very upset over what this medication did to my appetite today and I am planning on paying better attention to it tomorrow. But, if for some reason I find myself unable to get my diet back to where it needs to be, I'll be calling the neurologist and he'll be changing my meds. I'd rather suffer from the occasional migraine than make myself sick from not eating properly. <3 tiff:tongue_smilie:

I hate it when people post just to post.....

Hahahaha.....the word "flaccid" makes me laugh and laugh....that's why I try and use it often. Man, it sucks to try and download porn with a faulty sound/video card (and I know good and well that's what you've been doing.....all of us know that pregnant women love porn, right?) I thought you were a vegetarian?

    chicken~

I have been a vegetarian for the past 6 years, however, since getting my band I have had to add adjust, so I tried adding chicken and no matter what I do, how I cook it or how I coat it it gets stuck horribly! I did try an extremely small piece of very tender steak at a resturaunt from my husbands plate about a month ago before my latest fill and it was ok, but as a rule I don't eat red meat (even before becoming vegetarian) I basically just eat lots of tender fish instead
  6. I say I prefer vegetarian options because it's usually something with veg and cheese that you can mash.

    Can't eat meat

I go through stages where it is hard to get my meat down. Stress, dehydration and being overly tired can make me tighter as well as what has already been mentioned--being sick or having allergies that have increased phlegm in your system. I love my meat and have no desire to go vegetarian so I eat softer proteins during this time...fish, beans, eggbeaters etc or if necessary I supplement with protein shakes. Shredding my meat and adding sauces or gravies helps too but it does add extra calories.

What I think of Oprah's show today!

I'm not a big fan of Oprah, either. However, I do think Dr. Oz has some good things to say. He's a very intelligent doctor who makes well informed decisions. His wife is a vegetarian and I think he's more of a "in moderation" guy than a specific diet guy. He enjoys eating meat, but at home, eats what his wife cooks and finds her vegetarian dishes delicious and healthy. To me, it seems that lately Oprah is putting a lot of blame on her thyroid problems. I don't watch her show that much, but from what I've seen this is the impression I get. I have hypothyroidism as well. I was talking to my mom about it the other day (she's a nurse practitioner) and asked her since my thyroid imbalance is controlled with medicine, if it would be difficult for me to lose weight. Some of it may be that I have age on my side, but she told me since it's well controlled, it shouldn't be too difficult to lose weight. The fact is, I can't blame my weight on my thyroid problems anymore. I respect her decision to NOT have weight loss surgery. At the same time, I think she should respect the decisions of others who have had weight loss surgery. The statistics are there -- a lot of people who have a lot of weight to lose tend to gain it back after a while. For me, the lap-band is a tool for me to keep my appetite in check as I lose weight and when I get to the point of maintenance. Obesity is a serious health issue and surgery is one way to treat that issue.

    Soups

Beef Lentil Soup 4 c beef broth 1/4 c dry lentils 1/4 c dry brown rice 1 can Italian diced tomatoes ** 2 c chopped fresh spinach 4 oz left over roast beef 1 T Italian seasoning Bring broth to a boil. Add lentils and brown rice. Reduce heat, cover, and cook until tender (If you like your lentils a little firmer, wait about 10 min before adding them to the broth). Add other ingredients. Simmer for 15 minutes or so. I like this soup made with left over beef, but it's also good vegetarian. I also add a few garlic flavored croutons to my bowl. **I don't like chunks of tomatoes, so after I add them I run the hand-held blender through the soup before adding everything else. It makes the soup thicker also. According to dailyplate per 1 c serving: 146 cals; 4 g fat; 11 g Protein. I think it's probably a little lower as I use very lean roast beef. If it's vegetarian, it would definately be lower.
  10. 11. I will keep calling. That is how I got my orientation Just seems like it is hit or miss who you get. Last time I called during the lunch hour and they scheduled me right away. I liked Liz I thought she was cool. We had some smokers in the room and she was pretty tough on them but I thought it was totally appropriate. I liked her. I really liked Dr. Fisher. I hope to get him too and I think things will go smoother once I get my first appointments. I wish you the best of luck and that is a totally doable goal for March. I am looking about the same timeline I hope. So how much have you lost now? Seems like this 1200 calorie thing goes pretty quick from what they said. I had Robin for the nutritionist. She had to rush through her stuff to get us out on time. So did they mention a nutrition class to you guys? Nothing with us. Maybe that is the final pre opt class they were talking about?? It is suppose to be five hours. WE did'nt get to stay after since another class was coming in right after us. I did stay and ask Robin a few questions about vegetarian Protein but we had to talk on the way out the door. I agree it is worth it. I am gonna stay the course. I will give it a couple of days than call again for an appointment. I think once I have an appointment than maybe I can start to call and try to trade it in for something closer. I didn't get to sit upfront and I didn't get time to talk to them. Just to crazy of a day. I think that might have helped. I really like Dr. Fisher you are lucky to have him and let me know if you make it without a case manager;-) Maybe I will get that lucky. Dr. F did seem a bit negetive on the lap band.............so I hope he lets me go that route. They had me debating if it was the best option all the way home. But I am pretty firm that is what I want!! Thanks for the update helps to know the process.
  12. I am going to start the 1200 plan today so hopefully that goes well. Hard being a vegetarian. I did call today for cancelled appointments and was told we call you, you don't call us. They said I will get something in the mail stating when my appointment is that I don't have choices. I was told I can't call for cancellations until 4 weeks have gone by first. I think it really depends on who answers the phone to be honest. They told me to wait until I was called for orientation but I kept calling and finally got someone who signed me up the same day. Truthfully the orientation was disorganized and the presenters were really frazzled. We started 45 minutes late and they had to kick out another class to get us in the room and there was alot of chaos. They rushed to get us out by 12pm so I am guessing stuff was missed like scheduling appointments. We were not given any sheets to sign or even asked what would work for us. Just told we will get something in the mail and that they are really backlogged right now. Said they had 200+ referrals a month and they were really, really busy. so for some reason I seem to be in with a slower moving group....................things aren't coming together very smoothly and the process seems to be taking a long time. They didn't mention a nutrition class yesterday??? Just the psych and surgeons appoint than a pre-op class. I wonder if they are not doing it anymore or if they tell us later. But it was not brought up on the list of things to do. I am still hoping for Dr. Fisher. Liz did mention yesterday that no one gets a surgury without a case manager's approval. She said sometimes the doctors try to schedule without one but it won't go through without a signature!! LOL. Don't know what that is all about but she seemed pretty irratated that doctors would try to leave her out of the approval loop you might want to check on that since she seemed pretty adament that everyone had to get approval from her or her co workers first before surgery is scheduled. LOL. Good luck she is tough.

    Chinese food

Thanks a lot for asking this question! And thanks for the advice. I think I'll stick to tofu - in soup, or braised - when I start back on solid foods. I wonder if anyone has tried seitan or wheat gluten substitutes that some Asian restaurants use in place of meat. Vegetarian restaurants use these products, also. I'm hoping these items are as easily digested.

    December 16th date

i've seen threads for december 15th and 17th, but nothing for the 16th yet. the countdown begins! i started a low carb diet about a month ago before having the date scheduled and lost about 10 pounds. i'm vegetarian and so low carb is extremely difficult for me. that diet lasted about a week and a half and then i just went to an "eat less do more" mentality and have lost another 5 or so pounds doing that. i'm hoping that the loss will be significant enough to satisfy the surgeon and make the procedure safer. i'm aiming for 240 by Tuesday. any other 16th people out here?

    Kaiser Permanente Insurance

They'll give you LOTS of info about the 1200 calorie diet and it includes vegetarian options too. Most of Richmond is a bad area, but luckily Kaiser is pretty easy to find. When you take the San Pable/Barrett exit turn right at the light. Go down about 4 miles, it seems FOREVER but it's okay. You'll see Kaiser on your left, it's an older building and doesn't look like a hospital. Turn left and then the next right and it'll take you right to the parking garage. Just don't take ANY turns for about 4 miles. That's where I went wrong. :rolleyes2: Stay on Barrett.

    Kaiser Permanente Insurance

So at orientation they give you specifics on the 1200 calorie diet? I am a vegetarian so I am a bit worried about the protein part. I plan to ask alot of questions!! Maybe have to do shakes I don't know yet. So how is everyone else doing? Anyone going to the December 16, 2008 orientation in Richmond? Oh is Kaiser in a bad neighborhood. I checked mapquest and it sure does look like this bad area I went through once.

    12/10/08 One Down, 5 To Go...Oh NO!

Amazing-NOT! That's you...protein drinks (left you a note at your blog). Where did you get vegetarian chili? Can? UTI- no fun at all (only thing worse maybe is a camera up there...me-tomorrow...yay!). Band? Hmmm...I just did a thread about that...I've been wondering how insurance will handle it if I cut a few days/week off my "diet sentence"? My 2 oldest are graduating in Spring-big parties/company...so a week earlier would help a LOT. My initial weigh-in was Nov. 10, 2nd Dec. 10, so I was wondering if I have to end May 10? I think that's out the window already though because PCP could only see me on the 8th in Jan. Watch me get denied for a week early...dag insurance (didn't I just say that?)! I don't know how long it takes after you're done with the diet...I'll have to ask them! Late May might be too much to pray for huh?...one can hope. June probably :-(

    12/10/08 One Down, 5 To Go...Oh NO!

BG - you are amazing! It sounds like your appointment went so well!!! Yay for you girl! I have been bad about the exercising part and okay, yeah, the food part too. I started trying protein drinks and they, well, they constipate me more than I already am but I am working through it. I was up at the dr. yesterday. Had to run in for some cipro...I felt a UTI coming on and wanted to nip that in the bud. I mean yeah, I had a wicked full bladder so I could produce a sample but still. So I got my new protein powder in. I tried Designer Whey this morning and liked it!!! Spirutein is also good but the DW was thinner and more like chocolate milk. I think I'll keep on with the pro in the AM and then lunch. Today I had vegetarian chili. I do find it's a great meal replacement when I am busy and the only other choice would be fast food. Anyway, this isn't about moi..it's about you. You are well on your way!!! YAY! When do you think you'll get your band??? Shira
  21. My surgeon told me that the pre-op liquid diet is to help shrink my liver. I am not sure why your surgeon requires less of you. My two weeks begins on the 26th and my surgery is on January 9th. I also see my surgeon for one more visit on the 6th. With BCBS Federal if your BMI is 40 or > you do not have to do a six month diet and while you are not required to provide 5 years worth of history either the more documentation the better is what a BCBS Federal Bariatric person told me. This is going to be the longest month of my life. I plan to keep myself so busy I have no time to think about it. My cousin and sister were so excited when I told them I was approved. I celebrated with my cousin and a good friend on Saturday at a great vegetarian restaurant in NYC and then we went to see the tree and it started to snow when we got there what perfect timing.

    FREE Nutrition advice

They have lactose free milk, soy milk and goat's milk. Even if you are a vegan you should be able to use soy milk mixed in with your powder. There is also a lactose free yogurt that you can buy that you can mix in with the powder. Just eating the powder does give you the same nutrients, but that has got to taste like crap???? Here are some examples of vegetarian foods with high sources of plant protein: PROTEIN IN LEGUMES: Garbanzo Beans, Kidney beans, Lentils, Lima beans, Navy beans, Soybeans, Split peas PROTEIN IN GRAINS: Barley, Brown rice, Buckwheat, Millet, oatmeal, Rye, Wheat germ, Wheat, hard red, Wild rice VEGETABLE PROTEIN: Artichokes, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Green peas, Green pepper, Kale, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Mustard green, Onions, Potatoes, Spinach, Tomatoes, Turnip greens, Watercress, Yams, Zucchini PROTEIN IN FRUITS: Apple, banana, Cantaloupe, Grape, Grapefruit, Honeydew melon, Orange, Papaya, Peach, Pear, pineapple, strawberry, Tangerine, Watermelon Also, which stage are you in with the lap band (liquid, mushy, soft foods?)
