I was sleeved June 18--so I'm living into Day 4. I'm on Clear liquids and I'm supplementing some with Protein powder added to skim milk. So, pain. I remembered something my surgeon said to me when he was checking me out of the hospital. He pointed to a white board marker when I asked what size my new stomach is now. Then he said, 'Of course, there's internal and external swelling for two to three weeks. What you're dealing with inside your new stomach is a space about the width and length of a PENCIL." That's stuck with me when I'm sipping along. A pencil. A PENCIL. It's kept me out of a lot of pain. Just thought I'd share.... Hope everyone is well!

Hair loss concern......
Sleever963 replied to sleevesister9/13's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
At three months out from surgery my hair started coming out 3-4 times the amount it has for years. I have always met or exceeded my protein requirements but it is still coming out. I think this is because of the few weeks I was so limited following surgery. Granted, my hair loss has finally slowed down a bit; however, I continue to lose a little every day. I know it will grow back. I've added a biotin supplement from GNC to my diet to help hair, skin and nails so I'm not sure if my body has finally balanced out since surgery or what. All I do know is that I will continue biotin as a part of my daily regimen until I see a change in the fullness of my hair. Everyone hang in there; I know we'll survive it's just waiting for the turn around for full hair again. (Naturally curly here; have ONLY used shampoo, conditioner and an over the counter V05 hot oil treatment every six months. Never even considered coloring due to the damage it can cause to some people's hair.) I know... WE WILL SURVIVE! -
looking for someone to talk to for support

Well I'm 30+, however, I got pregnant a year after my band. I just wanted to reassure you that the band will not interfere w/ your pregnancy. I did not require any unfills, but that is always an option if you or baby are not doing well/growing sufficiently. That's the beauty of the band-it's flexible. Good luck in your endeavors -

Hi everyone ~ I am new to this website so still figuring it all out! I got my band on April 12th and have had ups and downs ever since, but each day is a new day and each step forward is one that I look to! Three weeks post op, I am still not eating too much which I think it's contributed to anxieties of the fear of getting hiccups or it coming back up. A week post op I did get dehydrated and had to get fluids, after that I was great for a week, until those hiccups came after my post op appointment .. spent 4 days in pain from those as they caused an air bubble that was huge. But my nurse at the doctor's office is great, she got me on the path to recovery and now I feel great, I even have hungar pains today. I switched from a milk based Protein shake to a juice based and I am doing so much better getting Protein in each day! Each day is a new day, I look forward to the years I have ahead of me to be in good health and spend with my family and friends. I started my band journey 3 years ago, researching and waiting on insurance. My insurance finally came through this year! A year ago, I was 314lbs, today I am 258, and my first fill isn't until May 31st. I am proud of that accomplishment. If anyone has had struggles during their first few months, please let me know I am not alone. My doctor actually talked to me yesterday about removing my band becasue of my highs and lows with they way I have been feeling since my post op. (Those dang hiccups) - I emailed him and the nurse today to let them know my new nectar protein I started yesterday made me feel much better and compared to yesterday I am 100% better - again highs and lows! I can do this, change is good, and the new journey every day is good.

Hello, What was your calorie intake, Protein, fat or sugar at this stage?

Hey guys! I am new to this forum. First let me say that it is so inspiring to see how supportive y'all are with each other. I am so excited to get this surgery and feel some support from other people going through the same thing. I'm 23. I got the lap band 3 years ago. At this point the sleeve hadnt been approved yet. And before surgery I was 250. After surgery I really got on the bandwagon, but I just couldn't lose the weight. I struggled with trying to eat constantly. I threw up constantly. Even Protein that I was supposed to eat, I couldn't get down. It was depressing. It was enbarassing. I couldn't go out to eat without staying in the bathroom throwing up all my food. It was awful. I got down to 230 and that's where I stayed. After 2 years my stomach started growing over my band and I had to get all the Fluid taken outta my band and I've gained all my weight back and more. I am now today July 4th at 265 and these past few months have been the most depressing of my life. One night last month I laid awake at night and couldn't stop thinking about getting weight loss surgery again. I considered bypass but that's just too major for me and idk about having children after that. The sleeve sounds perfect! I really hate the band. I hate throwing up constantly and being on the bathroom at all social occasions cause I can't get food down. Are there any quirks I need to know about? Foods that make you sick or what happens if you eat too fast? I'm waiting to hear back on my insurance but Im pretty sure they're going to approve it. I've already called and asked. So I'm very excited!! And I can't wait! I just hope I don't have to do the 6 month criteria. I look forward to the support from y'all and I'm excited to start this journey!

Lots Of Questions!
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to newskinnygal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi and welcome! I take the Women's One A Day Petites. It's two smaller pills instead of one big one. I can't help with the skin question, as I currently have a lot of excess skin. Quite honestly, I look like a freak'n Shar Pei. *laughs* I definitely have skin removal surgery in my future. My favorite liquids were low sodium broth and V8 Light Fruit Blender juice. I also really liked the V8 soups- no chunks but very tasty. I ate considerable sugar free Jello, too My favorite protein shake is Unjury. I still have one for breakfast every morning. I have tried many brands and Unjury is the only one I've found that I really like. Best wishes to you! -
Gas pain outta control!!!
Andrew's mother replied to DaPalangiChica's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I don't know about the hunger because I felt sooo bad when I tried to rush the creamy things that I had to go back to clears for 3 days to feel better. A few suggestions: make sure you are not having more than 30 grams of protein at a time. I was drinking Isopure (50 grams) and DYING with gas pains. It may not be connected but I felt better when I stopped. Also, strangely enough, Pepto Bismol chewable helped more with the gas than Gas X. Good luck, and it WILL get better. I know you are miserable! -
Any vegan lap banders out there?
catlover602 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi. I'm almost 8 months post op, and I went in for a physical last week. Apparently my cholesterol levels came back high. I was never a big meat eater, but I have been eating more meat because "Protein first." I do not want to take medication. I was able to get off pre diabetic meds and high blood pressure meds. I have never had high cholesterol or have been on meds for it? could it be my age? I just turned 49. I don't know. But I want to cut down on animal protein and get my protein from other sources. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. My weight loss is going great though. It has slowed down a little, but I am happy. I have not gained, some weeks no loss but I am still losing. I was self pay, so I am going to look into seeing a nut. My health insurance might cover that. If not, I will just pay. thanks guys. -
Hi all! I was banded on 10/16. Things went well according to the doctor, but I can not get rid of the gas pain. I even spent an extra night in the hospital because of it. I am taking 4 "gas-x" pills a day to little or no help. My left shoulder feels like it was surgecially removed and sown back on. The worst part is the pain travels to my left ear and it feels like it will explode. Any advice? I also feel like I have been starving since a week after the surgery. I hate sugar free Jello so my diet is water/protein drink/and broth. Is it normal to feel like you are starving? Thanks All- Palangi

When Did You Start Adding "whole Bread" To Your Diet?
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to Liliana Arleen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will be 10 months post surgery on 12/22, and I still don't eat bread hardly at all. I have had a couple of hush puppies twice, and 3 bites of dressing at Thanksgiving, and a small serving of bread pudding. Bread (even dressing) swells in my stomach and I am uncomfortable. I eat the flatbread crisps with toasted cheese as a Protein sometimes for lunch or dinner. I may try nachos in the future. I am going to try to avoid corn chips (fritos and cheetos) for as long as I can. That is a dangerous path for me to even begin to walk down. I eat the dried snap peas if I want that kind of crunch. I did eat half a toasted tortilla once with fajita fixing. Stuffed to the gills! -
It's a 6 week program. So the 1st & 2nd weeks I do 2 meals (mostly salads with protein) & 1 protein shake. 3rd & 4th weeks I do 1 meal & 2 protein shakes. Then for the 4th & 5th week it's all protein shakes. So far I have been able to get in 100 grams of protein a day. It might not be a lot of food but I do get full now.

I'm nervous...
onelessfatgirl replied to onelessfatgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much everyone, your support means a lot!! I told my patents last night. My mom isn't really too in-the-know about cuurent wls options. She first gave me some of the "I hope you know what you are doing.... this is permanent.... I hope you understand the risks." I think, based on some of her questions, that she initially thought I'd be getting roux-en-y. She asked if I'd be on shakes the rest of my life and if I'd ever be able to sit down and eat a meal with them. She said she didn't understand why I'd be able to stick to a diet post-op but not before. I shared with her some research findings about the long term success rates of those who have over 100lbs to lose and attempt it ::eye roll:: "the natural way." She said she'd like to see me thin and happy and I interrupted her and told her this was more than what I look like; it's about my long term well being, preventing health issues, living a life with and for my family (especially my kids). I shared with her some of the things that keeps me from living fully like, last week NOT taking my 7 year old to the school skating party because my DH was out of town and my knees have been killing me and frankly I was worried that if I fell I'd seriously injure myself, embarrass my son, and be out of commission for a while. Interestingly, she didn't ask about my husband or his thoughts. Which, I totally appreciate that one of her go-to thoughts wasn't about my husbands take or influence. I think she knows me well enough to know I'm my own woman, with a strong mind and personality. I'm sure she'll talk to my sister but I anticipate my sister will be supportive as she's been banded. I invited her to ask me more questions or talk to me about her concerns. So, we'll see how it goes. My DH told me he was very proud of me for facing my parents. I don't let many people rattle me but boy, they sure can. I respect them so much and how smart and strong they have been throughout their lives. But I'm a grown woman who has to do what's right for me and my little family. -
protein, and amount of food

I've found Isopure clear protein drinks are the only ones I can stomach which is funny to me because I've always enjoyed the creamy ones before. -
protein, and amount of food
Cheer Mama replied to cmathews77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat teaspoon of yogurt and cottage cheese. Some times I sprinkle a little bit of non-flavored Protein on top for a little bit of extra protein. I also a do soft scrambles egg. I couple this with my Protein drinks. I totally appreciate the disgust with your protein drinks! Now that I'm adding some real food into the mix, I find that the shakes aren't so bad. -
OH MY GOSH - I am so with ya - I too, at about that time was STARVING - Stomach growling, tumbling...and I'm seriously thinking there is NO WAY I can live like this - THEN - I found GNC 100% whey Protein - unflavored - you can literally mix it into anything - tomato soup, milk, carnation instant breakfast (my favorite) yogurt, sugar free pudding, refried beans--- etc. It really did make a difference and got me thru to the next food stage --- I think at this point it's your body saying "what the heck have you done to me - where's the beef"..... ha! Now, I'm 20 days post op and on mushies/soft food and I have not had the hunger pangs that I did before - I still get hungry - but by then it's about time to grab something. Just remember they say that at this point there really isn't any restriction (only swelling/healing process) so you will tend to be a little hungry - ME however, while I'm not feeling anything like what I would call "restriction" I am consuming way less than before- I'm getting fuller quicker and on much less - so SOMETHING is working in there. Hang in there - there are better days to come.

There is a great website. www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com It has a lot of protein shake recipes.

I've lost nothing in 4 weeks... I think my problem is not drinking 64 fl ozs of water, making sure I have 60-70 grams of protein and also counting my calories. I'm basically not eating or drinking much so I think my body is just getting used to the way I eat. I've read my post op diet package and there is nothing on there about how many calories per day... Can someone tell me please? Had surgery dec 9th lost 48 lbs

liquid diet questionS- 5 days in.
Bypassjourney replied to BrookeTiffani's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have made up 2-3 servings of the Protein powder shakes and stored in the refrigerator for the day. They seem to be okay. But I wouldn't go past the one day. -
Sweetie333, Please list your doctor's full food program--I don't understand what you are allowed to have if you haven't been allowed a protein/ water supplement until a month out. I have no idea how he would allow mashed potatoes, a carb, before he would allow protein water. That being said, I would not be following what I consider, as a person who has followed diabetes diets for 35 years, to be really sucky nutrition advice from a doctor unless I had a great understanding of the why's behind his diet choices. Some doctors have no real knowledge of diet issues/nutitrion. I would be questioning him about the diet immediately and then be researching this issue and seeing someone else. What kind of experience does he have as a sleeve doctor? Does he have a support group for patients and can you check with them as to their experience with his diet? Sorry for the rant, but I can't understand his reasoning at all.

Let me first say, you look amazing! Keep up the great work! I was sleeved in February and at about Month 3, found my appetite really getting larger. I am still eating a lot of protein 4-8 oz per meal but lately also saw a jump in my carbs. I got pretty lax over the past week (holiday cookouts) and didn't exercise as much and ended up gaining about 5 lbs. everyone is different so I would suggest just monitoring your macros to make sure your staying in the right nutritional zones set by your doc. And make sure to keep moving.

Taylee, Yes, I have a facebook. Do you? The coordinator did say they have a Protein drink there for $60. My friend just had a gastric bypass but with the sleeve. I think it's dual something lol. She bought chewable Vitamins from Wal-Mart. I think I'll call my surgeons office tomorrow to verify what exactly she means by a protein diet.
