    February 2019 weight loss buds

Interesting how we all have different results. My surgery was 2/26 and I am able to eat some food but obviously in a limited amount. For breakfast I usually have a microwaved poached egg or oatmeal. Lunch is usually a hard boiled egg and yogurt or cottage cheese. Dinner can be any of the above, my neighbor knew I was dieting ( I told no one) and dropped off a lean cuisine chicken fried rice which I at may be ate 1/2. I get a clear signal when enough is enough. I have been using fair life milk to supplement proteins and add it to make sugar free pudding. Note you need to use the fairlife milk, not the protein fairlife which I believe contains no milk and will not work with the pudding. I had lost 17 pounds at the two week point my only problem is lack of energy but I hope that will improve in the next few weeks.

    Yogurt

Somebody makes a lime that rings my bell. I don’t like yogurt so much but this lime is yummy. Also not a big lime lover either. If you love yogurt why aren’t you making your own? If you have plain Greek make your own. Sweeten or not to your taste. You can also wrap yogurt in cheese cloth to strain out water to make fresh cheese.
  3. Are you talking the pure liquid immediately after surgery or pureed a few days/week after? I have had so little appetite, it has been easy for me to stick to yogurt, cottage cheese, and a little mashed potato. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Recent Surgery Diet Struggle

I’m surprised you’re still on clear. After 2 days I was on liquid including having protein powder, yogurt, cottage cheese, unsweetened apple sauce, cream based soups (puréed and strained)... A lot more variety but I guess the sleeve has more mending time.
  5. The team introduced me to who was in the room. The anesthesiologist was named Marco and I replied POLO! Lol (I don’t think they like that much) I remember first waking up after my surgery and being in quite a daze. I told the drs “ I had a great nap!” Later on in the recovery room one of the nurses repositioned my bed because my stats were low. I was still a bit woozy and found out that I’d been on fentanyl! My reaction got the reply from a nurse not to worry .... “it’s not the kind you hear in the news”. Up in the room I got escorted with the bed up to the ninth floor which had a better view than my hotel! I was so glad that I asked for a private room. There was someone in the hall that was constantly asking for a nurse and screaming/singing away. A few people came in to get me adjusted and hooked up to machines including one on my neck. That was scary. I could hardly move without setting one off. Anyways later on the pain was unbearable. In my chest it felt like I could hardly breathe and my heart rate was a bit “tacky” aka tachycardia. After taking more pain meds it subsided. The bed was still quite upright. My husband arrived to help me and helped me have some jello (since the IV was in my dominant hand) after 1/2 I couldn’t eat any more. I was in and out of sleep and he said that he was going to leave. (It was only about 6). The day nurse came in to check on me when I called about the machines going off. The pump basically only needed to be reset because of my movement. She told me that if that happened, as in if it starts beeping just hit the reset button. A night a very young nurse came to check on me. She was doing the rounds and was a floater. She changed my bag and my IV again was going off. I tried to reset it. Nothing happened. Then I read what the thing said: AIR IN THE LINE. That’s really dangerous. If an air bubble gets in, it can cause all sorts of things including stroke. I knew this because of my medical background when working with people with disabilities. She changed the line but it was still saying the same thing. The whole IV needed to be changed. Then I saw one of the air bubbles. It was relatively small and we were able to clear it. The second one was dangerously close to getting into my veins by my hand. It was about a 1/2 inch long. All the flicking in the world wasn’t helping. She went to go get help. I was worried that it was going to continue to travel but thank god a more experienced nurse came in to flush my IV. She explained that the first thing that she needed to do was this part (as in the part close to my hand). The next day I was able to ambulate, pass gas, and use the washroom for the third time. (No 2) lol They discharged me the next day and I only needed 3 oxys all together to get rid of the pain (which I think was from all the CO2) I took 2 that day and one to help me fall asleep the next night. Other than that my food choice of a fruit bottom yogurt and stool softener the next day or so caused a terrible DS that night. I really thought that I’d flooded the bed from a terrible period! Needless to say this mattress is getting thrown out! Went right through the topper 😳 So other than that... I’ve the case of the smelly farts from the protein powder and my choice of making a homemade cream of broccoli soup that I didn’t strain. (I read afterwards how I could do something to my sutures this way) 😣 So far I’ve been able to tolerate a lot and have recovered quickly. I lost 23 lbs before my surgery on a 2 week liquid diet to help shrink my liver. Now it’s only been 5 days and I’m down 5 more or so. That’s my story so far... symptom wise. Hope it wasn’t too graphic or gross lol...

    Yogurt

Skyr has 20 grams of protein and 6 grams of sugar which is still too high for me in the stage that I’m in. It’s an Icelandic yogurt.

    Recent Surgery Diet Struggle

Dumping is real! I tried to experiment and have a fruit bottom yogurt... BAD idea! Lol Anyways make sure it’s sugar free jello and talk to your nurse or dr about stopping the stool softeners!
  8. I’m 3 1/2 weeks post bypass. I ate about 3 oz of fish and 3 hours later tried 1/4 c rectors beans. I got ill and had the foamier. Never want to do that again. It was so painful!! I think it’s because I ate the beans too quickly (I have had them a few times last week without issues. Is it possible I still had the fish in my stomach from 3 hours before. How long does it take fir food to leave the new stomach? I have heard water and yogurt move quickly within minutes.

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

    A. Yes. I’ve told enough coworkers that they provide cover while not totally blowing my spot. B. Only when I pay attention. If I am trying to “eat right” I eat too much, because I am both instinctively eating AND trying to meet some sort of hypothetical nutrition goal. When I stop paying attention but eat what I think I want (no, not always cookies... but sometimes!) then I end the day thinking I actually ate a somewhat balanced and rational amount. My restriction’s still pretty darn good. Last night at an event I had a gin and tonic, then two hours later I ate a tiny slider, a spring roll, a pig in a blanket, and a dumpling. And then I was done. Previously in the day I’d had a small thing of yogurt, coffee, and...wait, I think that was it. So obviously by the event I was pretty hungry. But on days when I’m paying too much attention to “eating right” I just end up stuffed by the end of the day. So I’ll be doing less of that.

    Not feeling full

I look at the commercials on tv and think boy that would taste so good. My dr has everyone go in phase 1 is clear liquids for 2 weeks, phase 2 is protein drinks and creamed soups for 5 weeks, phase 3 is full liquid which means I can have Everything in phase 2 plus cream of wheat yogurt and pudding for 1 week. Phase 4 is puréed foods for 1 week. Phase 5 is introducing food back into my diet. I almost crave just chewing the food.

    Solid food progression

This is totally normal for where you are in the evolution. I too get hungrier when I add in too much fruit. I can do about an ounce or two of berries or a green tart apple with peel a day without increased hunger. One thing my RD told me which works great for me - still at 13months out is that fill pouch with protein at meals. But you can plan mini meals that have mostly veg! In the early days that helped me. Early On: Breakfast: Protein shake (or green smoothie with protein powder + frozen spinach + blueberries + psyllium + unsw. cash milk) = 30g of protein MS: red bell pepper, celery or cucumbers or carrots and a yogurt ranch sauce Lunch: 2-3oz protein: roll up with meat/cheese + 1oz of some raw veg (cucumber, carrots, celery, grape tomatoes, avocado) AS: Mixed green salad like Rick outlines + feta cheese + pumpkin or sunflower seeds or walnuts/almonds/pecans Dinner: 2-3oz protein (grilled or pan sauteed) + 1oz cooked veggies + 1oz avocado/tomato BS: 1/2oz almonds + 1oz Granny Smith Apple NOW at 13months: I try not to snack, but do schedule a bedtime JIC snack. And if I'm hungry through the day, then the ONLY thing I get is 1 hard boiled egg OR raw veggies with yogurt Ranch dip Breakfast: I still alternate green smoothies with eating egg puffs with spinach and mushrooms Lunch: Salad with 2oz protein or Green Soup with bone broth and veggies + 2oz protein Dinner: 3-4oz protein + 1-2oz cooked veggie + 1oz avocado/tomato BS: 1/2oz almonds + 1oz Granny Smith Apple OR 1 GG brancrisp + 1-2tbsp almond butter

    Disappointed

If the yogurt, banana and protein bars are all apart of your plan at your current stage then you should be fine. Run the types past your NUT if you arent certain Definitely watch out for hidden sugars, high sugar contents , sugars by other names and sauces. Those things add up fairly quickly. Good luck and hopefully things will turn around soon.

    Disappointed

I ate a Yq yogurt 1/2 banana 1 protein bar 1/2 cup curried chicken I've been doing beans and chili mostly. I'm only 16 days out.

    Solid food progression

I'm almost 3 years out. Here's what my day looks like: Breakfast - shake with 1 cup of Fairlife Skim Milk, protein powder and frozen fruit of my choice and coffee (35-ish grams of protein) Morning snack - Skyr Icelandic provision yogurt and a piece of fruit (10g protein) Lunch - Mixed green salad with 4 ounces of chicken and 1 tb of balsamic vinaigrette (31g protein) Afternoon snack - cheese (1.5 ounces) and grapes or another small fruit (10 g) Dinner - 3-5 ounces protein, small salad and small veg (asparagus, broccoli, etc.) 20+ grams of protein depending on the meat at dinner. I usually add another shake in and some carbs, but that's because I work out for about 1.5 hours each day burning anywhere from 700-1000 calories in a workout and I can't go into that much of a deficit or my body will eat muscle instead of fat. I'm training for a major competition. Hope this helps.
  16. Yesterday I got the ok from my team to move onto all foods as tolerated but more specifically, raw fruits & veggies, nuts, grains (if I choose) but not potatoes, rice, bread..... So I have had fresh blueberries and a cutie mandarin so far and did fine with both (last night/today). It was heaven! LOL My question is....even though I dream of a huge salad with tons of veggies and a little chicken...(I know that isnt happening)....how did you start incorporating fruit/veggies (mainly raw veggies) and still hit your protein goals. I know protein first for life and I will keep that up but I really want to try having some veggies. I will prob have 5 small meals a day (plus a shake spread out through the day) and I was thinking of trying hummus and carrots tonight for my last meal. I also will have cooked vegs with my meals more if i can fit them. Fruit is pretty easy cuz i can just toss a few berries in my yogurt. TYIA

    ❤MARCH 2019 CHALLENGE❤

No snacking for me. Solid meals and meal times as instructed by me team (thank goodness) because the further out I get the more relaxed my restriction is so i can easily eat more than required. But yogurt with granola or a protein bar as a meal.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

It's been a few days since I've been on and MAN - so much good content here! "Cat food" - OMG! What a horrid term! haha! I get tired, but no as bad as weeks 1-2. I walked/hiked 3+ miles on Saturday and that made me dizzy. So I'm taking shorter walks now. I'm totally off the rails now with this program, but I feel great. I called to reschedule my 2 week follow up because I had a sick child, then they canceled the rescheduled appointment on me - now I won't be going for a follow up till over a month out. I'll be 3 weeks tomorrow and am making this up as I go. I drink water and protein water all day, but I'm short on fluids. Can't stand all that protein crap anymore but I do focus on eating higher protein foods. I basically skipped the puree phase. I can really eat anything I want (can be dangerous!) but only maybe 4 teaspoons, max. I mean, I haven't had tacos or crunchy stuff. I haven't had anything really bad (Yoplait, Oui yogurt is my cheat, but I can only eat 1/3 of one at a time, max). I'm making educated decisions about what I'm eating, both from a texture and health perspective, but I'm making it work my way. Had a SF Jello last night, couldn't even eat 1/2. The only things that bother me so far (primarily) are the damn Vitamins - the one thing I actually NEED. They cause me great nausea and fits of dry heaving. Oh, and I CAN'T THROW UP! It's a little concerning. I get foamies, but no full blown throwing up. Hope that's "normal". Also, I tried a teaspoon of spaghetti sauce (burned going down) and 1 SIP of red wine (also burned) so not eating/drinking that stuff, which I can live with. I'm in a STALL here! It's been 3 days with no scale movement, so I did a little research. I'm not sure how true this is, but I wanted to share it here in case it helps one of you. It helped me! Overall I'm really happy with my sleeve. I feel like I'm losing inches, even though the scale seems to be "broken"! Here are the tips I read online about Stalls: Patients are often instructed to follow a "liver shrinking diet" before surgery to prepare their body and ease the job of the surgeon. This diet may be a low calorie, low carb, or liquid diet depending on the clinic. While the smaller liver is often great during surgery, it's not a size that your body wants to maintain long term as a fully functional liver helps our body with a number of different processes. Due to this need, the body will slowly start to help the liver get back to it's normal size after surgery, which can often times takes....you guessed it....about 3 weeks. If you do weigh yourself, make sure that you are also taking note of your measurements. Fat takes up a lot more space than muscle. If you're losing inches and slowly losing pounds, this is often an indication that you are losing fat rather than muscle. If you do notice the dreaded "3 week stall", think of it as a badge of honor, a milestone, and "just a phase". Rather than thinking of your journey being "off course", remind yourself that it is just beginning. Time to enjoy the ride!
  19. No but you seldom do with a rny, but I do have other pains, I am not exempt. When my jujunel ulcers decide to complain it hurts like gall bladder pain in the right subcostal area, right below the ribs. I get pain in the center of my chest, just to the right of the sternum or I would like think it angina ❤ pain. And my pouch sometimes feels like it has clenched up like a fist, and I am still on Zofran to lower the incidence of emesis. But I do still get Gerd Like symptoms with anything containing coconut. And 3 or 4 things I still can't eat, all considered easy peasy, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and almost forgot, bananas. Not even a little bit, and p- butter not much better.

    Taking Pills After Surgery

Thanks, Nonsense. I first tried them in Greek yogurt, which someone suggested earlier, but that was disgusting. Right now I'm just pouring the powder into mouth and chasing it with water. Still disgusting, but bearable. I'll try them in water next time!

    Fear of being thin

Sneezergirl, I was not allowed to eat anything the first week, only clear liquids. I don't like artificial sweeteners, so, drank just water all week, with a occasional cup of broth. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. On the 6th day I started YQ yogurt. It has 17g of protein. I have tried every protein, but don't like them. I'm now eating beans and chili and fairlife milk, albeit only 1/2 cup at a time. It has chicken in it and I've had no problems. Well what I really wanted to say was, I didn't feel hungry for the first 4 days and all the sudden I was starving. Your 9 days behind me, so should be eating before you know it. Best wishes, Keep us updated!
  22. Yes my arms a lot smaller than they were and than i would have predicted they would have been ever been... so are the twins 😳 And on the protein front... I know i can just get it done if i have to. its not like I'm malnourished in the least i just want to explore my non protein options sometimes But who am i kidding i eat my weight in yogurt so im likely covered 😂
  23. Jobber

    Pre-op Liquid Diet

My diet is Breakfast: Protein Shake, Morning Snack: Fruit, not to exceed 1/2 cup, Lunch: Protein Shake, Afternoon Snack: Protein Shake or 6oz FF Yogurt, Dinner 3-6oz Lean Protein and steamed veggie or garden salad with light vinaigrette, Evening Snack (optional): Protein Shake. It starts tomorrow for me, I am a bit nervous about it, but will be fine. I'm happy i'm not fully limited to liquid until the night before where it's all clear liquids. Good Luck everyone!
  24. Protein powder just went in everything when I was at that stage. High protein yogurt, soup with protein, applesauce with protein, jello with protein, hummus with protein.. you get the idea. I bought and still buy bariatric food items from the bariatricpal store. The points I get participating in forums helps get it discounted and I can always hit the free shipping if I include purchasing my vitamins through them as well.
