  1. This is where you're absolutely, positively wrong. In the short-term, gastric bypass patients do lose weight, pretty much no matter what they do. But after the honeymoon period, this can--and often does--reverse. The body gets VERY efficient, with its new machinery, and if not fed appropriately, weight gain is not only possible, but more common than not. Look, whatever surgery you have, you're going to have to change your lifestyle dramatically or you WILL have difficulty reaching and/or maintaining goal. If you want a magic bullet, you're not going to find it. Anywhere.

    Finally, well almost..

Yes he has most of his experience in the xyz surgery, but the sleeve is a close second. His concern has to do with regaining weight and resolving other health issues like type 2, high lipids ect. As he tells it weight gain is about 8-10% with the xyz surgery as opposed to 15% with the sleeve. Truly I just want to be done with this and get on to living instead of existing!!!!!
  3. Hey Derbin247, I was banded on 2/24 and though I didn't experience weight gain, I was in miserable pain until yesterday when all seem to settle down. I still have some lingering after effects from surgery but I'm hoping these too will go away before my 1-week anniversary. Oh, and BTW, I had 2 c-sections and this was so much worse. I think because I was in the hospital for 4 full days for each of my children, the 2nd-day-in-the-worst rule played out differently with nursing care and my nurse-in-a-box (that self administering pain meds miracle machine). Anyway, onward and upward,er, I meant...downward.:hurray:

    Normal?

First, as a disclaimer, this post is under "General WLS Discussion"....and my surgery was the Lap band. So different people with different surgeries will have different experiences, and different stories to tell.... No one wants to have to resort to surgery in order to loose weight...at least I didn't. But I tried and tried over years of dieting...and failing all the time...Up-down, up-down...gain weight, loose weight, gain it all back again.... Plus it was really staring to effect my health, in a very serious way.... So yes, for me it was a last resort...perhaps a desperate resort....as hesitant with 2nd thoughts as I was, what was the alternative? I wanted to be skinny and fit! I wanted to be healthy...I wanted to dance at my daughters wedding.... Know what? I got all that...AND MORE....I am absolutely ecstatic with my decision, and THE RESULTS! It CHANGED my life in ways I can't put into words at this moment. So what if it is the easy way out...EASY IS GOOD...what's wrong with that? Some people think that's a bad thing....I DON'T....and look at what I got in return! Where would I be today without this surgery? Probably 6' under, or ashes in an urn...not kidding! Weight loss surgery is not for everyone...it is not about the surgery, but it is about LOOSING WEIGHT! However you do that, it's all good. I needed my stomach tied off, restricted...after 4 years I'm still good with it! Like I said, I have been down all those other roads, and diets do not work for me. Perhaps for the first few months, then it all come back......surgery is permanent!
  5. i cant believe how much info this site has given me! Big thanks to all of you who are so eager to help and offer advice! When I turned 40, I declared this "My Year!!" I would do something for myself...and so far this has been my most selfish year ever! ha! I was always skinny as kid...very boney and lanky! My weight gain came on fast because I always thought I could lose it. Both my parent's passed away in 2004...and the pounds came packing on. Depression, bad choice of food, my love for pizza and my passion for a nice cold beer all caught up with me. I turned 40, I'm 5'3" and I weigh 265lbs! ugh! I always carried an extreme confidence....and even though I was sad and unhappy with myself, my friends and family never saw this. I was the jokester and the entertainment at each get together! I always managed to dress nice but the selections are small when you are wearing a size 24 jeans! I just got tired and said "I want to walk into a regular store and grab a shirt off the rack instead of special ordering my Cleveland Cavaliers championship t-shirt and paying 3 times the $ for a plus size shirt!" So here I am..... I'm waiting on approval. I have completed 6 months of nutrition visits, I had a apnea test, scope down my throat to check for ulcers, a psych evaluation (which I can proudly say I passed -haha) and many many tubes of bloodwork. I had my stuff submitted to insurance on Sept 2. They said it would be 2 weeks. They came back right away with a denial due to the hospital not being Accredited, which it is. So they went back to the insurance company...and I am sitting here waiting. They are super quick to come back with a denial but don't mind taking their time for approval. I'm a nervous wreck!! I stare at my phone all day waiting for the call. I keep logging on to my insurance website hoping I can see something positive. That's my story...I appreciate reading all of your journeys, all of your suggestions and all the info you all provide. thanks for reading! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App
  6. I am three weeks post-op. I have been doing fine with the exception of terrible gas pain in the afternoon. Every afternoon, I feel extremely terrible and all I do is take Gas X and pass gas all evening. I am not sure what is going on but it is not fun. I had lost a total of 25lbs since the pre-op diet. However, the past 2 weeks, the scale has stopped moving in the right direction. I have gained 3lbs since surgery. I am not sure why, because I eat small portions and my calorie intake per day is between 800 and 1000 a day. I have eliminated all simple carbs and very little complex carbs. I am not discouraged just a tad bit disappointed that my scale is not going down. I still belive that I made the right choice and when I see my doctor next Friday, I will express my concern.
  7. Mine was fairly routine.. but some of the same things you are going thru.. I sure didnt want to eat or drink.. and yes I was tired all the time.. slept off and on all day long.. March VSG day four

Hey Mooki, thanks for the reply. The reason I am having the op is to take back control of my eating, and to stop food having this huge hold on my life. That is the main outcome I want so to hear that is what is happening is great news. As for the merrygoround of thinking its amazing and its not going to work I can really relate to this. The mind is a powerful tool and I do think for me the mental struggle will be as hard as the physical challenge. I have found that trying to visualise the positives helps with the panic moments, so trying to visualise myself out of theatre and walking around, being slimmer in the summer clothes, enjoying holidays without the dread of weight gain etc etc. I hope each day is getting easier for you.

    Weight gain?

The surgery went well with no complications. The first two weeks I lost one pound a day. Week three I lost nothing. And now in week four I am gaining weight!!! I am so sad and disappointed and scared I altered my whole life for nothing. Im still earing mostly soft food and liquids and walking at least 30 min a day. What am I doing wrong? Has anyone else experienced weight gain after surgery??? I'm dying to know of I'm the only one and what can be done or do I need to contact my doctor? Omg so disappointed!!!
  10. From the research I’ve done, the weight gain creates the stretch marks but losing weight causes them to be visible. The more I lose, the more I “get”. I have them from inner thigh almost to my knees.

Life threatning erosion but ready for Sleeve

I had my band removed a little over a year ago due to erosion. The thing with me is I didnt have any pain symptoms. The only thing I noticed is I started gaining weight. I also went to a different bariatric surgeon. He did an endoscopy and immediately found it. He immediately took out the band and during the course of a little over a year, I have gained 65 pounds. The weight gain has affected my moods, well being, motivation and friendships and relationships. I am happy to say that I have taken the first step to getting my life back. My surgery date is October 8th. I am having to self pay but I feel like its a small price to pay for a healhier me and getting my life back on track. I hope you find your way and wish you luck.
  12. Has anyone experienced weight gain before being banded? I was such a nervous wreck before I got the approval from insurance that I feel like I gained some weight. I'm afraid to step on the scale...as usual!!! My doc does not require a pre-op diet, but I think that I will try some protein shakes for a few days before surgery.

    What is happening?!?!

Seventeen lbs in a week this far along does sound odd. Like @sillykitty weighing myself regularly is a good motivator for me too. I weigh myself almost everyday and allow for fluctuations - unexpected change of diet, water retention, constipation (lol). (Hormones aren’t an issue for me anymore but they were a b*tch for unexplained weight gain/loss.) A lot of people take regular body measurements as well & have found the measurements will change even if the scales don’t. Also keep your scales in the exact same spot. Electronic scales are sensitive to uneven floors (tiles are the worst).
  14. I have not been sleeved yet, but my pre-op appt. is October 4th. Here is a list of questions I have compiled so far that I am interested in: Gas after surgery: Some people complain a lot about this. Does this have to do with the person or the surgeon's technique? What can I expect after surgery? Do you make everyone's stomach the same size or is it based on the size of my original stomach? Is there anything you might find during surgery that would cause me to wake up and not be sleeved? Straws: What is your "policy" on straws? I have heard different things online. Can you explain the theroy behind not using a straw? Weight gain from/after surgery: Some people online report gaining weight after surgery. Is this normal? What causes it? and what can I expect? Fluid Vs Protein: I am worried about getting all my fluid in. I don't drink that much liquid now. What is most important fluid or Protein? Blood tests: What are you testing for and what might show up that would cause concern or to have to postpone the surgery? Thats all I have for now, but I may be adding some after I read the replies to this post Bonnie

Too Tight Weeks After Fill. Is This Possible?

How funny. I just came home and started my period. I bet this is due to water weight gain. I am going to wait and see if it gets better before I remove any fluid.

Lap band and a sinus infection...

PA told me if I get too many sinus infections or asthma issues and i have to use Prednisone my band mmay have to be removed due to the excessive weight gain I have with this drug. Used to gain about 5 pounds but after band I gained 7 pounds in 3 days. It went away in a week after stopping the drug, but scared the heck out of me. That is usually the treatment all the docs give me for sinus and asthma problems.
  17. I was always very thin until about ten years ago when I gradually started putting on weight. I'm a 55 year old female. Until I was about thirty I was very self conscious about being so thin. (5'6" 120 lbs). When i was in my mid forties, i experienced several life changing events that affected me greatly and I found comfort in food. Over the past ten years I've gained 90 lbs. and feel miserable in my body. I stopped working out and allowed thoughts of food to consume me. It seems it takes a ridiculous amount of food to feel satisfied and full. So the weight gain continues. I've tried several diet programs, traveled across the country to weight loss and fitness camps, only to return to my usual poor eating habits and inactivity. I researched weight loss surgeries and after consulting with my dr., decided on the sleeve. I've done all of my prelimary ore op tests and am awaiting approval from my insurance company. My BMI is at 35, which may make it difficult for the approval I have only told one family member about my intentions and do not plan to tell anyone else. My family lives out

    vacation eating

Don't be so hard on yourself. I think you did great and some of that "weight gain" is probably Water weight and will probably fall right back off now that you're back to eating like you normally do. I did the same thing back in the summer only I really ate some garbage along the way. I made pretty good choices most of the time but I did have a couple of days where I really made some bad choices. I don't remember now exactly how much but I do remember that I gained several pound(maybe 5 or 6?) and was really upset with myself over it. Fortunately, most of it was apparently Fluid retention because it was gone in under a week plus I even lost another pound or two that week. I talked to my surgeon about it too because, even though I knew that it was fluid retention, I was upset with myself for falling of the wagon and making such poor choices. His response surprised me. He said "Don't beat yourself up. You were on vacation. You should relax and enjoy the things you love when you're on vacation. That's why we have surgery-so we can still enjoy the foods we love, only in smaller amounts. You have no enjoyed your vacation and you've already managed to get right back on track so it's all good." He went on to say that he thinks we should break over and enjoy food more when we're on vacation so that we don't feel deprived when everyone else is indulging. The important thing is that we get back on track when vacation is over. Looking back, it was probably one of the most important lessons I've learned along the way...On one of those days that I spent indulging myself, I literally made myself sick because I ate so many sweets. I don't even WANT to overdo it on things like that now because every time the urge hits, I remember how I felt that day and realize, I don't want to feel like that again. There's nothing that tastes good enough to feel that miserable after eating it. Anyway, my surgeon always tells me that "No one is perfect. No one makes the right choices all of the time. The important thing is that you make the right choices MOST of the time. And if you make a bad choice, don't wait until the next day to start over. You start over as soon as you realize your last choice was a bad one."

    Smokeranalyzer Test

I understand before I even went to my pcp I had to make up my mind if I was gonna quit for life for this! It is a hard decision I understand, smoking to me was almost a best friend...lol...but one I know I have to let go! We have decided for me that chantix with Wellbutrin would be right for me! With the sleeve right after I quit the weight gain associated with quitting would be gone! You can do this! And for life! To have a life free from nicotine and obesity is priceless;)

Sux what do you attribute your weight gain too?
  21. Best thing you can do is stop weighing every day, it will drive you insane. I weigh every Sunday morning before breakfast. Your weight will fluctuate daily, so if you only do it once a week you won't be subjected to seeing that. Yes, you will have stalls and maybe even a few weight gains. Our bodies need time to stabilize along the journey. As long as you know you are eating correctly and doing all the things you should be, just keep doing them and your weight will eventually start downwards again. Be patient and kind to yourself. This isn't a race but a journey that changes our lives.
  22. I have a job which requires pretty extensive international travel, which partly contributed to my weight gain over the past 3 years (gained 40 pounds). Eating out on an expense account 3 meals a day for 15-17 days straight in countries where there is no such thing as skim milk or even artificial sweeteners on the table is challenging to say the least. Ths year alone, I was in Russia, Poland, Turkey and Indonesia (all pre-op) and am heading to Spain at the end of July, followed by the UK in september and France and Turkey again in October and possibly Greece or Malta in December! Now I am 4 weeks out, feeling good and obsessively tracking every calorie I eat which is way more managble with every meal prepared by me. I am stressed about eating out while traveling and I don't have that small of a capacity albeit much smaller than pre-op but I don't get full that easy (6-8 ounces of food is no problem). I do plan to pack Protein shakes and maybe some Protein Bars. I want to at least replace Breakfast and lunch and only eat dinner out. I should also mention I am a big foodie loving to experience fine dining and wine and always adored finding the most amazing restaurants when I travel and trying foods I have never had before. For anyone who travels abroad, how do you manage? Any other suggestions on food to pack?
  23. Hi Broove. I had a kidney transplant in June 2014. I lost kidney function due to an autoimmune disorder. I was on dialysis for 2.5 years. The last 9 months I switched from hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis. That is when my weight gain started. My transplant doctor is the one that put me on the road to bariatric surgery. I am having surgery in January. I can't speak to life after sleeve yet but I have been down the dialysis road. Best of luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

DOMS, Water Retention, and Weight Gain

Another afterthought...I want to provide the actual numbers associated with glycogen stores that results in weight gain. The important thing to consider is that you are likely NOT gaining fat. Your body stores 2+ grams of water for every 1 gram of glycogen stored in tissues. This results in increased body weight as well as potential bloating. However, it is water weight. You are not gaining fat. Remember that 1000 grams of glycogen needs 2000+ grams of water for storage in your tissues. Also, under-eating can result in weight gain. You are more than two years out. You should not be restricting your intake to the 600 to 1000 kCal range each day. You are doing metabolic damage by restricting so low and combining it with exercise. read the article below if you have the time. http://strongfigure.com/why-under-eating-is-making-you-gain-weight/
  25. Introversion

DOMS, Water Retention, and Weight Gain

Glycogenation is the most common reason people see weight gain when starting a new exercise program. The new exercise program increases your muscle’s energy storage capacity. An active body demands more fuel, so it adapts by storing more of the carbohydrates you eat as glycogen in your muscle tissue. So you may be losing fat when you start a new workout program. However, the progress you make is cloaked by water weight gain. You have possibly lost a couple of pounds of fat the first week but gained several more pounds of muscle glycogen during that time. So you weigh yourself, see some notable weight gain, and conclude your hard workouts were all for nothing. Therefore, stay off the scale for a few weeks. Measure your progress during these first few weeks by how your clothes fit, not by the number on the scale. Also, 600 to 1000 calories a day is not nearly enough intake for an active lifestyle. The less you eat, the more your body retains water. The more water you retain, the bigger that number is on the scale. Give your body the food it needs, and it will eventually shed fat. For example, I am a 36-year-old hypothyroid female whose weight fluctuates between 117 and 120 pounds. We were sleeved in the same time frame (early 2015). I am two years out and consume anywhere from 1800 to 2100 calories per day. You are causing your body to hold on to fat and water for dear life by restricting so much. In other words, eat the food and stay off the scale.
