    Hi I'm new

Hello Stephanie, Welcome! I'm 45 and very excited for you. Take advantage of the best time for losing the weight, the first year. I lost 70 pounds during that time. Unfortunately, I had some medical issues (not band related) and have gained back 35. I'm now back on track and following all the rules again. The post above me, by Tom from Toronto, was great, he basically said it all and gave some great advice. I wish you the best of luck with surgery, it was the easiest surgery I've had to tell you the truth. My only complaint was the gas pains 1-2 days following surgery. I can eat anything, though I did have a slight problem with turkey last Sunday because I tried white meat. I can only eat the dark or I get stuck. Other than that, it's all in moderation. My weight gain occurred when the band was completely unfilled due to the medical issue. It's now refilled and I'm feeling restriction and confident I'll lose the weight again, fast! Well, best of luck as you begin this exciting journey!

    Anyone eating Nuts

When nuts are available, I have trouble resisting them. Even worse, I keep going back for more until they're done. And THAT'S dangerous! During the first 18 months it didn't seem to matter, but in maintenance, it may cause some weight gain which then needs to be handled. Almonds are more filling, and easier for portion-control than peanuts. Bottom line: nuts are okay if you can keep them in moderation, but that can be difficult.

Bi-Polar Meds - The skinny and the fat

Topomax is used to treat BP its a mood stabalizer and a size effect is weight loss. Altho it comes with about a million other side effects they only last about 2 weeks until you are on the drugs regularly. Paxil Is used to treat the drepression part of BP and can be used with the Topomax if you do well on this antidepressant maybe ask your doc about putting these 2 together. I gained about a billion pounds being on and off the anti-depressant drugs myself and when I went on the BP combos I asked for one specifically designed to make me not gain anymore weight or I wouldnt be taking them lol. I also take Lorazepan but I just started that because I still have panic attacks which I have always had bad. But with increased stress in my life over some work situations and other stuff they are back with avengance and I am not sure if they have any weight gain or loss with those or not I should look that up after i post this actually hehe. Anyway hope that helps. -Gummie

Bi-Polar Meds - The skinny and the fat

I can relate to your situation First let me say all of my weight gain was from my Paxil I was on for 1.5 yrs and gained 70 lbs. Me too! The anti depressants will slow down your metabolic rate is what I was told by my PCP to almost zero, the meds are used for depression but after time for me I was more depressed from my weight gain then from what I was being treatedfor so I quit. Secondly, my son who is 19 is Bi-Polar he was also on the lithium whicvh made him a zombie, no motivation and all he did was sleep, then he went to depakote and his blood pressurewas so high the doctor was in fear he would have a stroke, so he quit taking that, then the prozac which did not do much so he is now smoking marijuana, he has one of those cards from his doctor where he can gfet it legally, it has been the only thing that has worked for him. No bi-polar episodes but every now and then he has panic attacks so takes an occassional xanax. Every person that I know personally who has taken any kind of anti-depressant has had weight gain, you may find that just getting off of the anti depressante will be enough and wil lstill be able to take your bi-polar meds my son never had weight gain taking his bi-polar meds if anything he lost weight. Have you ever tried lexapro, that is an anti depressant that my husband takes and has had no weight gain it works well for him, my doctor told me it has the least chance of weight gain..but everyone is different.

Bi-Polar Meds - The skinny and the fat

Lithium is known to cause weight gain but I've never tried it. When I was put on Depakote, I regained over a hundred pounds that I had lost. I switched to Lamictal and found it to be less sedating and was able to actually excercise loose some of the weight. I am not currently taking a mood stabilizer however. Throughout, I have also been on zoloft and at times zoloft and wellbutrin. I do not suspect either of the anitdepressants or the Lamictal of impairing my metabolism/energy like the depakote seemed to. Have you tried Lamictal?
  6. Hi Everyone! I had vsg surgery June 2016. I went from 230 to 154. I got pregnant with our 3rd boy in 2017. During the pregnancy I maintained the weight until the very end I was up a few lbs to 158. I had a csection and by the time i got home from hospital I was up to 167!!!! I had gained weight after delivering which made no sense to me but i learned it was mostly fluid retention from hospital iv’s. I watched carefully what i ate and after 2 months the retention came off plus more as i was down to 144lbs. After that and 2 months of breastfeeding I developed major cravings for junk.....mostly sugar. I was also very stressed and had been hit with ppd...depression. I was treated for depression but my cravings turned into out of control eatting of anything sweet. I am beginning to gain weight and definitely look ALOT heavier although i am 158, i look bigger than i did when i was last 158 if that makes sense. This is really depressing me and I need help as im afraid if i keep up at this rate ill be 230lbs again. Im also eating alot more quantity wise...its like i never had the surgery! I dont get the tight full feeling anymore that told me when to stop eating, i also dont the pain that tells me I overate. Has anyone else gone through this? How can i reverse it and start loosing again? Is it possible that ive stretched my sleeve? lastly, has anyone else breastfed and have gotten these cravings?
  7. im the other way, im 28 now, and when i was 12-13 yrs, i was started on drugs for epilepsy, which have a great side effect of weight gain, and of course the more you weigh the more drugs you need, great being a teenager at an all girls high school, nothing was said, but im sure there were comments behind my back, plus im an emotional eater, before high school i was a normal i guess size, many 5 kg heavier than everyone else my age, but the drugs are for the rest of my life. if anyone questions you, simply a)your on a diet b)your really sick, and cant eat much c)stuff on your mind d)just tell them, and ask them to respect your privacy were i work there are 120 nurses, most to almost nearlly all know, which i dont care, i had people saying best of luck and good for you for doing it, even compliments after 5kg, shocked, at 116kg, the only difference i see is that the stretch marks are more white as apposed to red, if people have issues, thats their problem, its your life, your body, especially your life!! they may even have a back hand comment about the band, saying its lasy or taking the easy way out, its crap, i was thinking about a lapband, and the parents said do alot of research but they are behind me 100%, so from thinking that they only eat a tomato, to finding out its a massive life change and they have to work much harder than other people on diets its only if you lost too much weight and looked gaunt around the face they might ask about drugs, but stay healthy and she'll be right sus
  8. Has anyone gained water weight while taking OTC's? Last week was a weird week. I got really sick (cold) and was on my cycle. I gained 7lbs. I knew it could not be right. Granted I had not worked out since last Thursday, but knew there was NO way I could gain 7lbs! I dropped 4 of those lbs yesterday. I am still suffering with congestion, but feel much better. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I go to Drs 1st week of April and will talk to him about it then as well. I was actually drinking more water to help flush out the cold and eating less. I knew I was not flushing because my urinating was not the greatest.

    2nd Fill and no restriction

i wanted to ask you how do you define "restriction" i know i had the wrong idea of what it was. i thought i would be able to eat like 3 teaspoons of protein and feel like i was gonna throw up if i ate another bite...well to my surprize that's not was restriction is. lol i found out the hard way that true restriction isnt necessarily about how much you eat, but about how long you are satiated between meals. sometimes before i got restriction i would be hungery like 2 hours later. now i can go anwhere from 4-6 hours before i am truley hungry and not just "head hungry". (boy is that a hard lesson to learn as well.) I feel your frustration on the weight gain to,. i was about to jump off a bridge whenever i gained one pound! but i've figured out that my weight is gonna fluctuate a few pounds and now i just focus on how my clothes fit. Hope something i said helps. Keep up the good work. Jennifer
  10. Gosh it's been a while, my update to update to update.. HEH! My tube broke while I was pregnant. I had to pay (out of pocket) about $10k to get a new band put in. Well actually, I had to buy the whole band (you can't buy pieces) and they replaced the tubing & port. Allergan is currently entertaining reimbursement. My doc kept the tubing to show it was defective (it actually just snapped in half). I'll let ya know what ever happens. And my band is not covered by insurance.. Oh man and as for weight gain... pregnancy + Broken Band = bad. I lost 120lbs the first year, gained 60lb while pregnant, and since my band has been fixed (Oct. '09) I haven't gained or lost a single pound.

    Just curious....

I have back issue also. Had 1 major back surgery in 2000 and 3 smaller ones since (to clean up scar tissue in my spine). I also take meds for nerve damage. Maybe that's why I gained so much weight over the years? Had no clue they caused weight gain. I think it was because I ate too much, but the meds also could have an effect. I didn't have to wait for my surgery. I was approved in 2 weeks and my surgery was scheduled for 2 more weeks. No pre op diet required either. If I had that much time to think about it, I might have changed my mind. Thank God I didn't - the band literally saved my life. My biggest advice to newbies: Have patience. It's not gunna happen overnight. It took me 4 mths and 3 fills to get proper restriction. I lost maybe 2 lbs during that first 4 mths. After my 3rd fill, however, the magic started. So have patience. You didn't put the weight on overnight and you won't get it off that quickly either! Good luck! Marci
  12. OMG, from the blogs I am reading, it seems as if everone is having difficulty. It is nice to know that I am not alone. I am not sure if it is the time of year (the holidays are quickly approaching) or just that I am wanting a little of the forbidden foods. Friday was a very stressful day for me at work, so I found I was snacking ... on nuts ,.,. on the fat content. Then I ate egg foo yung for lunch (just 1/3 of what was served) but decided to finish off the 2/3's for dinner. What a mistake. Then Saturday was no better...don't even ask about the french onion soup. Thankfully, I realized the error of my 2-days way and got back on track yesterday ... having protein shakes and some meat with plenty of water. Am feeling better. But, I am wondering if something is going on with just about everyone, because we all seem to be suffering some type of setback, be it weight gain, plateauing, not being able to stick to the rules, etc. JUST REMEMBER, WE ARE ON THE JOURNEY TOGETHER. Don't lose sight of the finish line. Even the longest journey starts with a small step. WE CAN DO IT.

    First Blog!

First of all sounds like you're doing well! 21 lbs already WAY TO GO! Well I have been at this 1 year and 6 months and have lost 153 lbs. Let me tell you I have weighed myself every single day! I even took my scale with me on vacatoin. It helps me see weight gain and loss patterns, I track it and I have been able to see what eating patterns affect the scale for me. Your weight will usually fluxuate within a few lbs but if you do everything you're supposed to you shouldn't see huge weight gains.
  14. So a 130 pound loss in a year and 3 Months. That is pretty spectacular. My words of advice... Start working out before the surgery Lose as much weight as possible in the first six months by severe calorie restriction (500). I am hungry now, and I can eat WAY MORE...so weight gain is possible. That window of opportunity is small in comparison to the rest of your life. See...I ate breakfast, and I am hungry again already! It is 11:30am! I ate at 9:00am! So I have to drink something until lunch or else I will eat way to much during the day! Have fun and enjoy the ride!

    Help...I'm Falling Off The Wagon

Thanks for being honest!!! I can totally relate!!! I am 1 yr post-op, and my appetite has increased, and my sweet craving too! Plus it doesn't help that its the holidays, and food is everywhere! Personally my weight goes up, and down 5 pounds or so. My Dr. wants me at 145, so if I go up past 150 I freak out ,and put myself in check! The good thing is that you realize your cravings... Acknowledging this is key. We are human... we will make mistakes! Put yourself in check! An occasional treat is ok! I like sugar-free popsicles, Jello & S/F pudding. Weigh yourself, and set a weight gain limit. It's normal to go up & down a few pounds... know your bodys norm. PS... Drink plenty of water!!! Good Luck!!!

    Still trying to decide...

First, to Jonathan: I know first hand how our WLS journeys don't always go as smoothly as we wish, so no matter what you decide - I wish you luck and success. You deserve success and I believe wholeheartedly that you will achieve with it - band or not. Good Luck. Now about this comment: Not to be pro-RnY (eek) but this is kind of misleading. Of course RnY patients generally benefit from malabsorption which occurs at maximum rate until about 18-24 months after surgery. Then after that initial period, there can be a stretching of the pouch and a slowdown of the malabsorption rate both of which can contribute to some "bounce back" weight gain of up to 10% in some RnY patients. But to imply that (all) RnY patients regain (all) their weight after 3 years? Nah, there is nothing I've seen in clinical research nor personal observation to support that. Can RnY patients gain weight back? Yes. Do all patients do so? No. Do those that regain see all of their post-op weight loss come back? No. Are the RnY and DS surgeries still very serious complex, (and for some commitment phobic folks like me) down right scary procedures? Yes! But it's good to clear up any confusion about the rate of re-gain with bypass types of procedures. Happy Band (and Unbanded) Journeys to all.
  17. Since being sleeved on the 21st of October, I've been weighing myself daily. In the last 3 days I haven't lost and in fact I think I went up a pound or two. Is this normal? I'm feeling a little discouraged. I can now have mushy foods and creamy soups and I have been. Did I move too fast to the next stage of food?

  19. WOW I had no idea the military was so hard on their people. I knew there were weight guidelines but my goodness that is borderline abuse!!! I think that is grat that you have taken the time to gain insight into your issues that cause your weight gain! That is wonderful b/c for a lot fo people that can't see that far into the process! Looking forward to your blog!
  20. Hello I just recently created an account in hopes of receiving some help and advice from gastric sleeve patients (It took me a lot of courage to decide to do this though). I hope I am asking in the right place though hehe. Anyways, I have had my vsg on August 4th 2014 at the age of 17 and so far I am over 80 pounds down! My sw was 220lbs and I am hoping to be near 102-110 pounds (I am only 4 foot 10). I have a few questions so bear with me please I have had my vsg in a different country than in the one I currently live in so I do not have anyone to kinda follow up with. I was also given a nutrition plan for the first 6 months only(although it was quite vague). Right now, I am currently struggling with a lot of grazing. I have never been the one to actually eat a proper meal before my surgery and I grazed instead, but right now I am grazing non stop through the day especially on sweet things. Sadly, this has resulted in me in stalling for a few months and then putting on 2 pounds and i decided to seek advice before I gain more. Also, my family eats completely different things than I do, so I am literally left on my own to figure it out and it is hard to cook and such since I was busy with my last year of high school and I will be starting university soon. I looked up online and a lot of surgeons or nutritionists say no snacking while others encourage it. I believe that maybe having 1-2 planned Snacks would help since I am awake for a long period of time and if I try only sticking to 3 meals I feel like gnawing my own arm hehe I am sticking to Protein but sometimes I am just overwhelmed or bored because I keep eating the same things everyday (I do love chicken though!). I was hoping if someone could share their food choices/meal plans with me if possible or maybe easy things I can cook for myself? Lastly, I was hoping if there are other people who have lost weight everywhere except for their belly. I have lost weight in my whole body and a bit in my belly, but it seems to be the only place where there is stubborn fat (I am apple shaped) and my belly is just hanging and nothing seems to help.( I am guessing that's why I am a bit carb sensitive and I need to completely cut carbs out if i want to lose weight.) Thank you very much in advance and hoping to meet other people as well

Obesity Surges among US Women -- 40% Now Obese

Agree with @@Inner Surfer Girl -- women earn less than men, but are more likely to be single head of household with children depending on them, thus depleting their financial resources even more. They also, even when partnered with a man, spend more time on childcare and house care than men do. So, they have less money to buy healthy food, and less time to exercise or to devote to education. Also, being poor and being primary caregiver for a child are both significant causes of stress. Being stressed and living in poor neighborhoods can cause a lack of sleep. If you are working two or three jobs, probably some of them are at night, also messing up your sleep. Stress levels and poor sleep are also known to contribute to weight gain.

    Desserts

A typical person can eat ONE brownie or baby cone of ice cream (take the cone and fill it to the top without going over the top). I think where most of us got into trouble was eating 4 brownies (or the whole pan), and always ordering a large ice cream. After hitting maintenance, try a normal amount. If it sets up the cravings or weight gain, then that won't work for you. While still losing, sweets should be either a spoonful or off limits. "Healthy" sweets are a problem for me because they tend to taste more like food, and I eat more of it... so much so it would have been better to have had a small real sweet. Play around with it to see what works for you!
  23. I pretty much told everyone who works directly with me that my surgery is scheduled. I really feel like this is something I need to do. I am not apologetic or embarrased about needing help and why should I be? I am not going to do a Starr Jones. Yes it none of their business but if someone asks I will tell them. Of course I haven't had the surgery yet so maybe I will feel differently after. I am proud to have made the decision. Besides the people I work with for the most part have responded pretty positively. I am new to the forum so I just want to add that I am in no way glorifying my weight gain but I have to be able to forgive myself before I can make any progress. Real talk
  24. I have struggled with weight gain since about 1998. I was small during my high school years but after marriage I gained up to 180. After getting pregnant the 1st time I gained up to 214. Got down to 193 when I found out at 5 months after my first child I was pregnant with baby number 2. I have been struggling with dieting and been up and down with my weight. I decided after my body feels like a broken record that it was time to get my life back. So I started my journey in Oct of 2011 and did not make a consultation until march. Now I have started my pre op diet and I must admit its hard. My surgery is scheduled for the 28 of June. I am excited for the chance to have this opportunity but it is hard right now. I am needing all the support I can get.

    Frustration

I was banned in May 2010 and first fill was July 2010. I have had 3 fills since then. In the past year - I have only lost 36 pounds even though I get sick and vomit quite often. I eat right (healthy) and do Zumba. My weight was going down until I upped my Zumba classes which they credited the weight gain to muscle gain from the Zumba - however, I hurt my back and could not continue with Zumba for about a month. I lost 3 pounds but then gained it back. I am frustrated because I eat healthy and exercise and have only lost 36 pound whereas their is a girl in my office who had this done the year before me and she eats like a pig - chocolate/peanut butter eggs for lunch - pizza and burgers and she would not be caught dead break a sweat from exercise - and she has lost over 80 pounds! Another co-worker had this done and lost over 100 the first year and she eats like crap and drinks at least 3 sodas during an 8 hour meeting and she would not exercise to save her life. I have not had a soda since May 2010. What am I doing wrong????????????
