  1. Your tastes will totally change too. Don't pre purchase too many things! Isopure is suggested. Some mix it with Gatorade to be more tolerable. I'm 2 months out and down 45 lbs. at this point, I'm considering becoming vegetarian because meat always makes me ill. Even a bite. I was a huge meat and tatos person...Midwest girl. Kinda weird. But I just go with the flow.

    Unsupportive Husband..

Ok so that you guys can get an idea of why he's against it... My husband is a born and raised vegetarian, he avoids processed foods and try's to always eat organic. I guess you can call him a health freak. He wants me to lose weight the "normal" way, good old fashion healthy eating and exercises. He just doesn't understand that when you've been brought up almost your entire life with bad habbits, they are EXTREMLY difficult to just stop.

    Re-Sleeved With Dr Aceves

thanx all for your responses and encouragement. i was hesitant at first to go through with surgery as there arent alot of experiences online with resleeving, however after months of research and asking dr aceves questions daily, i made up my mind to finally do it. as for my previous sleeve, the first surgeon did not cut enough out to guarantee long term restriction, its his technique i guess. as for dilation, it happens frequently in some parts of the stomach as it did happen to me. as for foods that can and might stretch the sleeve, im not sure. i am a vegetarian, the hard and dense food i eat come from tofu and legumes. i dont eat meat which is even harder food, but my stomach dilated and stretched never the less. the medical system where i come from is very complicated. to consider asking for a free revision or a refund is totally out of the question, it just doesnt happen. dr aceves is a very kind man, he made sure im happy and comfortable with the care im having. all of his staff, dr campos, karla, yolanda, nina, the nurses the janitors everyone theyre very kind nice and always have a smile on their faces. im recouperating at the lucerna for the next few days, im feeling great.

    Question for sleevers

Reach out to your bariatric team first for clarity, they may have ALL the answers you are looking for. The plans vary so greatly you may end up with more questions and no answers that will help YOU Currently I'm at: 60+ protein ,>80 carbs, ~45 fats I for example am very carbon sensitive so I tried to focus solely on protein earlier on but I also don't tolerate meat for long periods so I have to rotate food groups, then I said to my team I just want to be a vegetarian again and they said OK. I was expecting great resistance. My new rules are similar to old ones but I work with the NUT to make sure in not stunting my progress either.
  5. I was a vegetarian for years. After surgery I added fish back in occasionally. The thought of eating chicken, beef or pork makes me feel ill. After 15 months, I am getting very tired of my staple foods, but not sure how to expand without adding meat. Also would like to cut down the amount of dairy (yogurt and cheese) that I eat.

    Is It Possible...

One of the ladies in the support group i go to is a bypass patient and is a vegetarian and healthy, she eats lots of bean for protein, and 1year out still drinks at least 1 protein drink a day
  7. I would love to go vegetarian but am highly reactive to soy which is problematic to meeting Protein goals. Any suggestions from the vegans? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    The scary thing...

True it isn't my weight alone that could be the problem during anesthesia but the good news is that I don't drink alcohol at all, I don't smoke at all and I don't eat meat at all (yes I'm an obese vegetarian). I also don't take any kind of medications and thankfully I don't have a single health issue (yet), no blood sugar, no blood pressure, no cholesterol etc. so I think everything else is fine. And yes you're also right about the risks of my weight against the risks of the surgery, I mentioned that myself that if I stay as I am now then I give myself 6-7 years or 10 maximum and then poof I'm a goner. So yes this surgery is definitely the only way to life for someone in my weight. And last, I already started with a diet 2 days ago even before my first visit to the surgeon next week, I have already started to train myself to be more "food disciplined". Anyway let's hope for the best... Hope I can get some more inputs from more people who have gone through this. Appreciate it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. I'm not even 3 weeks out. Today I ate 1/2 CUP of egg salad & a whole cup each of vegetarian chili & also cottage cheese. That is on top of having a protein shake this morning. I also had 48 oz. of water. I only eat when I feel hungry, eat slowly & stop when I start to feel full. This seems like A LOT more food than I was told that I would be able to eat. I've had no problem getting it down or keeping it down. Is this at all normal? I'm really starting to get nervous.
  10. I'm vegetarian not vegan. It's not really hard. I eat a lot of greek yogurt, cheese, nuts, beans and dark green leafy veg. I also supplement with unflavored whey isolate.

    Is this normal? Getting nervous...

No, I didn't get a maximum yet. I am going to see the nutritionist today. Technically I wasn't supposed to transition to soft foods before I met with her, but I have been so hungry. Real hunger. Not head hunger. I have a very hard time being hungry. I always have. One of the reasons that I chose VSG was to eliminate or significantly reduce that feeling. Unfortunately, that's not what I got. I understand your concern about the mayo salads. I am a vegetarian & there's not many ways for me to get in Protein right now. I make my own egg salad. I'll boil up a half dozen eggs & use just enough low fat or light mayo to make it moist. (About 1 tbsp. for 6 eggs). So, not too bad I think, but I hear what you're saying. Thanks for the feedback.

    Going Vegetarian

I am going to go vegetarian due to my Rheumatoid Arthritis. From what I have read it seems to help with the inflammation and if I can solve it with diet rather than the awful drugs I want to try. I am concerned with getting enough protien that we need as lap bandsters. I am also concerned that I wont be able to get the leafy veggies to pass through the band. I have currently stopped getting any fills as I am on so many medicines right now that I cannot take the chance that they won't pass through the band and sit in my upper pouch. This can cause erosion and bleeding ulcers, not what a bandster needs. I am hoping that this helps to put my RA in remission and who knows maybe I'll lose weight faster!
  13. Speaking from past experience, I never felt unwelcome on this site. I am a bit against the grain since I am a vegetarian with many food and medication allergies. I try to eat as clean as possible. I am very much against GMO's and processed foods. I use this forum as an informational tool, but I also do my own homework regarding my healthcare. If someone disagrees with me, that fine. I know what things work for me and my body.

question about protein & working out

Wait are you talking to me? Saying I'm ridiculous? That I'm not getting 100g of protein a day? Who are you to say that??? In that total I include 20g from either one Protein shake or bar a day (I don't agree with you that the body passes most of that out and I have science to support that claim, but feel free to disagree that's what makes the world interesting) the rest is from food. You may eat less than 4oz of meat a day, great! You may use vegetarian/vegan protein sources, great! You may get a lot less protein a day than I do, great! I am not saying we all need 100g I am just saying that is MY average and it's far from a harmful level (though there def is a harmful level). We are all different and different things work for each of us. Please don't call me ridiculous. I'm not judging whether you are right or wrong about whether we need to count this stuff. I don't count it most days myself, just once in a while out of curiosity. Most days I eat 3-6oz of lean meat, at least one greek yogert, some cheese, nuts or nut butter, Beans and legumes, and yes one protein shake or bar. I eat a varied balanced diet with YES aprox 100g of protein. I work out a LOT--marathon training (I've run three halfs in 2015 so far), yoga 4-6 hours a week and swimming and bicycling to keep up for my upcoming triathlons. I have 18% body fat. This is what works FOR ME. To claim you know what is best for everyone, THAT is ridiculous.

    No interest in food?

I enjoy going out to eat with friends now, and being the only one who leaves half the food on my plate while they clean theirs. I never even noticed before how much volume OTHER people eat, and I mean all types of people--male, female, old, young, fat, thin, vegetarian or meat eaters. They finish everything. I notice because now that I am less focused on my meal I actually look up from my plate! I also have solved the mystery of how I got so fat in the first place. I was eating too much food. Sounds so simple but it really was a revolutionary insight.
  16. Okay - I am the oddball here. I am banded with no fill, but I am 10 months out. I was banded on September 5th and weighed 232. Since that date, I became a vegetarian, and then a vegan. Weight loss is not super quick, but steady. I am now 186, about half way toward my goal of 140. I decided that I have made such tremendous life changed (I was extremely out of control in my food addiction,) and I really am embracing this healthy life style. I decided that I have lost half the weight with the band (my lifesaver and only reason I am not 300 pounds today) and I now want to lose the other half without the band. So far I am loving it and more careful than when I had the lapband full. I feel like I was stranded in the middle of the ocean and the lapband was my lifeboat....It is time for me to swim...
  17. I'm not vegetarian but I made stuff like lentil and vegetable Soup and pureed it up, use vegetable stock as your liquid. You can puree anything with a bit of stock or a can of tomatoes once you're on mushies too. liquids might be a bit hard without milk - do you substitute soy milk or anything? My favourite salad during mushies was a can of 4 bean mix, lettuce, skinned tomatoes and cucumber chopped small, an avocado and some chick peas - with salad sprinkles (seeds and tiny bits of nuts basically). Yummy. I'm here to tell the tale that you can surivive without 400 grams of Protein a day and that you can in fact even survive the post op liquids without drinking a single Protein shake. And I have all my hair and I lost weight and I even have muscles. Truly as a vegetarian I think you'll have a very very healthy diet with your band. You'll get the fibre, Vitamins and minerals that everyone who focusses on Protein shakes and chicken is often missing out on because they cant fit them in.
  18. Hey! So I just started my 10 day pre op diet. So far so good. I prepared myself by cutting out Snacks already and having a few trial days of all liquid. My question is this...are there any other vegetarians out there that went through the full liquid, pureed and mushy stages? I am the first at my clinic and they really didn't have much in the way for ideas for me. I also don't drink milk and my clinic is big on pushing Milk at the begining(in between "meals")...nasty! I tried to do a search on here for previous posts of this nature but I feel like it's looking for a needle in a haystack sometimes. Thank you! ~A
  19. Im vegetarian and dont drink milk .. well i guess thats not entirely true anymore cos i will drink whey based Protein powders but only mixed with soymilk or Water, no normal milk. Its not hard, you can substitue soymilk for milk and there are plenty of soy protein shakes available if you want to go down that route.

    Greetings from Bangkok

I can't answer all of your questions, but can get to some of them. You do get hungry, and you learn how much you can eat. You fill up fast too, so always chew, chew, chew and then chew some more. Focus on Proteins. You should get a plan from your doctor. I am averaging about 4oz of food at a sitting. The problem I had last month was that I was dehydrated, not eating or drinking because I didn't feel like it. So, I had a trip to the doctors and was told to at least drink Protein shakes or eat yogurt if I am not hungry to get some food down everyday. You are not supposed to starve with the band. I also take a multi Vitamin everyday. I can't drink and eat at the same time. I usually make sure to drink about 15 minutes before eating, and then don't drink for a hour after eating, if I drink sooner than that, I wind up coughing everything back up. I can't tolerate really cold drinks anymore either and you have to sip. Sure you can be a vegetarian, there are threads on this site for that. I can't tell you about being at goal, as I am far from goal. The band allows you to live a normal life. You can still go out with family and friends to dinner, you can still go to a bar. You are just living a healthier lifestyle and making right food choices. I make mistakes, we all do, but you just get right back up and continue on your journey. I think the best advice I would give now is to learn how to eat properly, how to choose the healthier food, learn to not give into cravings, be conscious about binging emotionally. Its tough and its a learning process everyday, but I am finding that by making these choices, and being proactive, I am comfortable with my progress. I love living in NYC and wouldn't trade it for the world. It must have been a difficult decision to move to Bangkok.

    Greetings from Bangkok

Hi, Thanks for the speedy reply. I can understand your concern about medical care in Asia, but in some countries (Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore) the care is as good as the States and a good deal cheaper. I had knee surgery here about 2 years ago - both the surgeon and the care I received were outstanding. Actually, almost all the doctors in the private hospitals here have studied either in the States, Canada, or the UK and more often than not are board certified in these countries. I hope you don't mind if I ask some questions. If one isn't ever hungry, how does one know if we are eating enough or getting the proper nutrition? When one reaches one's goal weight, how does one 'stop' losing weight? Can one be a vegetarian and still have the lap band? Why can't we drink and eat at the same time? I'll be using this site as my support - I'm sure there are no support groups here! I see you are from the New York area - me too!!! I was born and raised in New York!!! Again, thanks.

    Soups

Beef Lentil Soup 4 c beef broth 1/4 c dry lentils 1/4 c dry brown rice 1 can Italian diced tomatoes ** 2 c chopped fresh spinach 4 oz left over roast beef 1 T Italian seasoning Bring broth to a boil. Add lentils and brown rice. Reduce heat, cover, and cook until tender (If you like your lentils a little firmer, wait about 10 min before adding them to the broth). Add other ingredients. Simmer for 15 minutes or so. I like this soup made with left over beef, but it's also good vegetarian. I also add a few garlic flavored croutons to my bowl. **I don't like chunks of tomatoes, so after I add them I run the hand-held blender through the soup before adding everything else. It makes the soup thicker also. According to dailyplate per 1 c serving: 146 cals; 4 g fat; 11 g Protein. I think it's probably a little lower as I use very lean roast beef. If it's vegetarian, it would definately be lower.

    chickened out

Thanks for the info, I feel better. I am still waiting on the paperwork to be emailed from Nina, might give her a call again. I am trying to plan ahead for the airlines, work schedule etc. That's funny about your pcp thinoneday! Mine is about 100 lbs also and a vegetarian but she will sit and try to give me advice about healthy eating and I get revved up, lose weight then it all goes to h.....ll and then some, back to worse than I was. I have a young at heart husband, will go anywhere, try anything and trys to make the most of his life. He wants me to come out and play and my world has been shrinking to the recliner. Not good! I feel I can vent here bc a lot of you can relate and have realized your dreams and I am ready to jump in also and improve my remaining years..
  24. Look around for a nutritionist who does vegetarian patients after sleeve. They're out there and will have more flexibility:) Best wishes and congrats on your progress!
