  1. I'm not vegetarian but I made stuff like lentil and vegetable Soup and pureed it up, use vegetable stock as your liquid. You can puree anything with a bit of stock or a can of tomatoes once you're on mushies too. liquids might be a bit hard without milk - do you substitute soy milk or anything? My favourite salad during mushies was a can of 4 bean mix, lettuce, skinned tomatoes and cucumber chopped small, an avocado and some chick peas - with salad sprinkles (seeds and tiny bits of nuts basically). Yummy. I'm here to tell the tale that you can surivive without 400 grams of Protein a day and that you can in fact even survive the post op liquids without drinking a single Protein shake. And I have all my hair and I lost weight and I even have muscles. Truly as a vegetarian I think you'll have a very very healthy diet with your band. You'll get the fibre, Vitamins and minerals that everyone who focusses on Protein shakes and chicken is often missing out on because they cant fit them in.
  2. Hey! So I just started my 10 day pre op diet. So far so good. I prepared myself by cutting out Snacks already and having a few trial days of all liquid. My question is this...are there any other vegetarians out there that went through the full liquid, pureed and mushy stages? I am the first at my clinic and they really didn't have much in the way for ideas for me. I also don't drink milk and my clinic is big on pushing Milk at the begining(in between "meals")...nasty! I tried to do a search on here for previous posts of this nature but I feel like it's looking for a needle in a haystack sometimes. Thank you! ~A

    Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

Hi Everyone- Yay!!! Completed my second day of running this morning. Initially I had thought I would move right on to week 2 after 2 days of week 1 but I think I will do one more day. My next running day is Saturday and I would likely be running in the morning before my audition. So I think it’s best to just to stick to the suggested plan esp since I don't know a lot yet about how running affects my singing. Whosya I have heard of that book, I may check it out. 199 mi seems insane to me, but what do I know? J (Slinky I am with you… what-he couldn’t make it an even 200? HA!) Kathy I am glad you mentioned about each week on C25K being different. Now that you mention it, I do remember that from when I was doing the program a few years ago. It’s amazing to see how far you have come, WTG!!!!! Suzanne, we’ve all had weeks where we struggle… just try to hang in. You have a CRAZY long day, when do you find time for yourself? LynLyn Good luck on the new job! I admire anyone who can get up at the buttcrack of dawn to exercise!! I don’t live in a neighborhood where I can get up and run in the morning so I have to adjust. Good thing since I am so NOT a morning person. OK….2 questions. The first I posted on as a ps on my last post so it may have gotten lost…. Those of you that have done 10Ks, how much longer did it take for you to train for those than the 5Ks? Second, nutrition… any vegetarians on this board? If so, have you noticed any changes you’ve had to make in your intake since running? I have stopped eating meat in the last 6 weeks (except for some occasional fish). I do get a lot of protein from the veggies I consume but am wondering if anyone else has some experience to share? Off to NYC tomorrow with DH. Have to sing a few auditions but looking forward to some 1:1 time with him J Hope everyone is having a great day, Beanie

Tina, yay! I know you were worried about your CM appt. with Liz because of the vegetarianism, but she was great about it wasn't she! Folks chose to stay away from flesh foods for a variety of reasons, including religion, and none of us do it just to make our lives harder . . . I have found that the staff there are very respectful of differences. In fact Liz blows me away with her level of patience with a variety of folks. Kaiser Richmond ROCKS!! :-) Today I have to have my CPAP read by the pulmonologist and set at whatever . . I hate it, it wakes me up all night and gives me morning headaches, but I HAVE TO do it so I am 1000% compliant!! Oh and I have also noticed that the bags under my eyes are much less pronounced, don't know if it's from a different sleep pattern, or from my mask leaking and blowing cold air over my eyes all night, LOL! And I have to have my final lab work done today and pick up my pre-op nasua medication script. It's less than 2 weeks away now!!!
  7. Hi thank you... I had a tt before banding...I'm a vegetarian and I follow calories in vs calories out theory...

    Kaiser Richmond Pre-op

Hey Tina! I went to the pre-opp classes today with Liz & Robin, and I asked specifically about vegetarian eating, getting enough protein when soy protein is so much less dense, etc. Robin says it's harder but it can be done, she says that the plant based protein foods (i.e., soy) slip through the band easier and faster than the animal-based proteins, but you can eat eggs and cheese and cottage cheese and the regular-style boca burgers, but NOT the california burgers cause they are all grain and veggie. Seitan is good, too. She said she met with vegetarians one-on-one and she would meet with me before I went to stage 5 (rest of life diet). I have already agreed to eat chicken and fish for a year but no more . . . anyway, she was not negative about it and neither was Liz. The only thing Ronin didn't answer was if you can eat too much soy (I get over 35 gr soy protein a day) and she just said that's really controversial So nothing came up in my pre-op medical exam with Tom today about the apnea treatment, I guess Dr. Fisher is not as worried about treating it for a long time if you have lap band (cause you are under so much longer for RNY), but Dr. Baggs is my surgeon! I need to ask him but he's gone through the 12th . . . . so I am going to just proceed on to surgery on the 23rd unless someone stops me! I had to lose more than 10%, I stared at 285 and I was 250 when I first saw Dr. Baggs, he set my goal at 255. Whew! A little breathing room. Still, I want to be down 40 lbs before surgery, and it's within reach. :thumbup:There were 2 or 3 folks in my class today that were almost 20 lbs below their goal weight, Liz was VERY happy :-)
  9. Ok I am online now researching vegetarian protien options that are also low fat. I figure I better know my stuff and maybe it will give me e few new ideas on what to eat to get all my protien. LOL. Thanks for all the updates. Oh yea I remember about the doc saying that Christina did not have to have CM appointment. The only reason I remember that is Liz made such a big about how that would never happen even if the doc suggested it at the orientation!! So I guess this was no the first time it has happened. I was hoping too but Dr. Baggs did not even suggest it!! Actually I am ok with the nutrion class and pre op class. I have alot of questions I want answered so it will be ok. I don't get another physical and another nurse appointment but ok.........I had one with Dr. Baggs and than two with my PCP in the last six months. But ok they want to be sure I guess. I also have had every blood test in the book in the last four months with my PCP and I guess I am gonna get another round. Anyone get checked for a hiatal hernia or sleep apnea? I sorta think I have a hiatal hernia it runs in my family. I have symptoms. I hear they can fix them but I would be curious if I have one. Lot of heartburn and chest pain which I guess could indicate a hernia. Also I can't eat and drink at the same time or I get sick........which will help with the band........since I am used to this rule but I just wonder why it happens. Hernia was suggested to me. Might also explain the chest pain I get sometimes. I also hear they check the gallbladder and remove it the same time as the band if they find something wrong. Anyone else here this? Lets all meet sometime in February? Anyone game?
  10. Thanks for the update. That helps. Ok no sandwiches I will stop that now before I go in. She is going to really be on me about protien because I am vegetarian and struggle with the Protein. I am eating the same stuff over and over. But I plan to have my ducks in row and let her know I will be able to figure out how to get the protien in without eating meat. I know which soy meats count and what doesn't........thanks Robin for helping me with that. I have the EKG wish I knew how to get it to you. So you knew yours was not normal before hand? My mom is a nurse and said it looked like a good rhythem but she is not sure about counting spaces up and down and said that makes a difference. I stressed about it for two days but figured if something is wrong and the surgery is not safe I need to know now. WOw 37 pounds ................I really need to get on the ball I wanted to at least hit 20 by the time I went to see her. So impressed with your progress. I may end up with the same surgery date as you that is what I planned to ask for. Or the next Monday after that. I am getting very excited but really nervous too. So what don't the doctors know? Diet tips or the rules of the program? I assume that is what she is talking about. So your with Dr. Baggs too. AH lots of us have him.

    What did you eat today!!

I think this is great to see what others are eating and makes you accountable for what you are eating. So here is what I ate today: Breakfast 1 egg with 1 oz of low fat mozzarella cheese 1 morning star vegetarian sausage Lunch 2 ounces of bay shrimp 1/2 teaspoon light mayo 1 ounce of light cheddar cheese 2 melba crackers Dinner 2 ounces of halibut 1 ounce of green beans Snack 1 proti diet chocolate carmel bar. I have not been counting calorie but instead measure all my food and counting protein. I only eat 3 ounces per meal.

    Any one else starving ?

I thought the same thing about having an empty band. When I went for my one-week check-up, he told me it has 7cc's. I find that kind of hard to believe. I was banded 15 days ago, and I am STARVING. I've been drinking the Protein shakes, with Water (he also forbid me from having dairy). All day long I am constantly drinking water, crystal lite, snapple, and sugar free icepops. And I can seriously say I am straight up starving. He didn't give me the go ahead for anything else yet. For the first week I thought it was all in my head. I can't possibly be THIS hungry. But I could possibly gnaw my own arm off, if I wasn't a vegetarian. So I've been having some Soups here and there. Even though he gave me a strict diet. I can't help it. I really and freaking hungry. Which is why I still can't believe he banded me with a band already filled with 7ccs. And the Protein Shakes are giving me unbelievable gas pains in my lower abdomen. I saw my gastroenterologist, and he gave me a script for Reglan? Hopefully this works. But the 23rd wasn't that long ago. Real foods to me sounds like a bad idea. Less than a week. I know the stomach area around the band needs time to heal, whether or not you don't feel discomfort while eating. It's a real pain in the butt, but the 2nd stage of mushy foods shouldn't be that far off. Unless you have my doctor who is probably trying to break my will to eat. Haha. I have another 5 days until mushy foods.

    What! How can this be?

Thank you for all the info! I haven't started any vitamins yet. I am a Vegetarian, so prior to the surgery I was taking several vitamins. But my doctors nurses said they would be to big to swallow, so they took me off of them for the time being. I am having 2-3 Protein shakes a day. Water, snapple crystal lite, and hot tea when I am feeling extremely hungry. I can't wait to move onto the mushie stage, I am starving. haha.

    Going Vegetarian

BEANS! Beans are your best friend for protein. Refried beans are WONDERFUL. Also, make best friends with your crock pot and learn the joys of all kinds of bean soups... Pea Soup, Veggie Stews, 15 bean soups... There are endless possibilities and they are NEVER tiring for our family. Vegetarian Chili is another REALLY good one...

    Going Vegetarian

I am currently on Prednisone 15mg per day, Plaquinil 400mg per day, folic acid, nexium, and will start Methotrexate injections on Sunday. I am really leery of the Methotexate as the side effects are quite nasty, hair loss, stomach bleeding, almost total supression of your immune system so a common cold or flu can turn dangerous. Log term use of the Plaquinil can effect your eyesight as well. Prednisone has been a lifesaver lately, but it promotes weight gain and robs your body of potassium and other vital nutrients. I will start the meds as my Rheumatologist wants me to, but I am hoping if I go vegetarian and get the inflammation under control that I can slowly wean off of the meds and control it through diet. This is the worst sort of pain I have ever had in my life, it is constant and debilatating at times. So I will try anything. I hate being sidetracked from my lapband journey like this, I had come so far and was doing so well b4 this hit. I was walking everyday, now I can barely walk 10 feet at a time.

    Going Vegetarian

I am going to go vegetarian due to my Rheumatoid Arthritis. From what I have read it seems to help with the inflammation and if I can solve it with diet rather than the awful drugs I want to try. I am concerned with getting enough protien that we need as lap bandsters. I am also concerned that I wont be able to get the leafy veggies to pass through the band. I have currently stopped getting any fills as I am on so many medicines right now that I cannot take the chance that they won't pass through the band and sit in my upper pouch. This can cause erosion and bleeding ulcers, not what a bandster needs. I am hoping that this helps to put my RA in remission and who knows maybe I'll lose weight faster!

    Kaiser Richmond Pre-op

My goal is to be down 40 by surgery. I want a BMI under 40 when I go under! But see, I started eating meat again just so I could do the pre-op and post-op diet stages. A main reason I am going lap-band is so I can go back to vegetarian once I have lost the weight and stabilized. So I stick to the 1200 but don't do the starches, at all. The only carbs I eat are berries and beans and vegies. Oh and the ultra high-fiber tortillas that are 7 fiber 3 net carbs and 5 protein. I log everything in caloriecount.about.com, which sows that I actually average from 900-1100 caloeis a day. I drink all of my water, and more if i can. AND . . . I walk 5 miles every day. But the #1 most important thing I do is my support groups, one at kaiser tuesday nights, one (hiking) one on saturday mornings, and the big sonoma county group once a month. I get emails, texts and calls from my group members morning, afternoon and evening, it is almost like AA or something (so I hear) and it's really hard to fail and get discouraged with all these people cheering me on day and night! Isn't Dr. Baggs wonderful??? So smart, so young, so witty, so adorable! :scared2: He might be young enough to be my son, LOL! I will try to find the thing about his training and post it
  18. Hey Riley where did you get the information on Dr. Baggs and the new procedure? I would love to see that. Wow did I luck out to get him than. I asked for the surgeon who was the best at lap band but they said they all were. And I told them pick for me than. They said if you stay today you can see Dr. Baggs. Interesting he also told me that under 42 BMI tended to do good with lap band. But he also really stressed that they have no long term studies and don't know what happens 15 years down the line to the lap band and studies show better weight lose with GPB. I think you were right before me LOL?? Too bad we didn't meet. I did mention being vegetarian and he said that is really important and you would probably do better with the lap band unless you plan to start eating meet. I did ask him what his choice would be if he were me and he laughed and said I like them both you chose!! He said I was healthy enough to do well with either. He said same recovery time and basic surgery risks either way. I told him 80% lap band and I would decide before I lose the two pounds. Wow if I call in next week I might also be looking at surgery in February or early March too! So what about the preop and nutrion class? Do you have to do that as well? So what is with bariactrics and back surgery being together?? The lady next to me kept asking me how I hurt my back. I didn't have the heart to tell her "no I am just here cause I am fat!! LOL" She kept telling me they were going to crack me open and check out my back..............she also couldn't hear me very well. What a strange combination!! LOL
  19. Went to my appointment today and it turns out they psych said I was normal, maybe boringly normal!! She was fun and we had alot of good laughs. She was doing a job I do daily so it was a bit of twist for me to be getting the questions. Luckily I knew who the president was and who I was!! So I passed that although they didn't really like that ADD part since I guess that could interfer with my followthrough with the nutrition part. I assured them I am over organized and on top of things to compensate. My appointment was at 11:30 but I got there at 10am. I saw down to read a book and got called 5 minutes later. I was done by 11am. I went to make the surgeons appointment and they said how soon do you want it. I said very soon. They said what about today in two hours!!! So I stay a bit and meet with the surgeon as well. Another cancelled appointment. And he actually took his lunch break and meet with me at noon. I was assigned to Dr. Baggs and he seems great. I can go either way lap band or gastric. I think he prefers gastric but I couldn't get him to commit to which one he thought was best he said I needed to decide. I was down to 243 today. 246 with my coat and sweater but they gave me a chance to weigh without it :-) Dr. Baggs says my goal weight is 241!!! So two pounds way . I have to get my lab work done this week and my EKG. He ordered all the labs and I have to meet with the nutritionist and case manger. I have to be at 241 to call and make the appointment. He advised maybe being 240 just to make sure the case managers don't send me home which he said they will if you are even slightly over your goal weight. So I am down except for losing a few more pounds and the final appointment!!! I am shocked how quick it went!! Everyone was so nice over there and I personally thanked Kelly for getting me in so quick this week. I guess I can thank my bottom heavy body for not having to lose the full 10%. Also since I am vegetarian I meet with Robin a bit and realized that lap band is probably better unless I plan to start eating meat. GPB patients don't do as well on a vegatarian diet. So that is where things are at with me. Anyone else have Dr. Baggs? He seem quiet young but confident. Oh I did have to have my stomach examined to see if I was ready for surgury other than that it was easy appointments.
  20. Hello Riley. I think being so far away from Richmond doesn't help much. I have no way to get in there and let them know who I am. I think the face to face contact helps. I just can't eat meat. I have been vegetarian all my life (LO) and I throw up when I eat meat. I have been eating eggs and cheese and beans alot. Beans have carbs so I make tacos with small amount of beans and lost of cheese and lettuce and cucumbers. Just enough beans to taste. I also have been making veggie chili and eating that at night. Egg sandwiches, egg omelets, scrambled eggs. Lots of string cheese and weight watchers yogurt. Fat free pudding. Truthfully eating the same things over and over since my choices are limited. I actually hate dairy products including eggs but I decided to have to give somewhere the dairy is easier than the meat. I don't drink milk and never have but soy milk works just as well. Oh and cream of wheat. Lots of cream of wheat right now. But again I don't think that this is the healthiest diet forever. I am used to eating nuts and soy meats too. Some are high protein but overall I had to get rid of the soy meat products for the most part. ALso I eat alot of salad and always have. But now without the salad dressing and cheese, unless low fat. I did discover that low fat cheese is wonderful I can't tell a difference. Go figure. Lots and lots of water and crystal light. More than 4 ounces actually. Than I don't crave soda all day. I think my biggest problem has always been soda and sweets. No that I can't eat candy and can't drink diet soda all day I don't have much I crave. (I still crave the sweet but none in the house so..........I am outta luck unless I want to drive to the store. I just really don't think I can do the meet and I am waiting for an appointment to try and get some ideas. I did try to call and talk to Robin but again no appointment so I can't do anything untill they call me. I just feel like I am on my own until that first appointment.

    Kaiser Richmond Pre-op

swrktp, I am so impressed that you have managed to remain vegetarian through this! I used to be (OL) vegetarian, right up until the day after orientation! There seemed no way around eating chicken and fish both on the 1200 and post-op for me. I'm mostly eggbeaters and tofu and cottage cheese and soy or brown rice protein powder, but I am doing chicken and fish (get this, I have to eat it "canned" so it does not remind me of carcass!) to get extra protein and avoid losing muscle as a lose weight so fast. My goal is to be vegetarian again when the rapid weight loss stops - hopefully when I am on full food again. I also heard (actually, read) that Robin specializes in vegetarianism, isn't that great!?! Anyways, way to GO girl!! And keep the faith . . .you are right if you are at goal weight sooner you will be banded sooner. I posted earlier about my friend who was at goal and they called her to come see the case manager the next day, they gave her a surgery date and THAT day and then called her the next day to move it up by a whole month! I went with her to her pre-op Friday and they were talking about moving it up again to monday (today) but she said no thanks - she goes next Wednesday for RNY. And they were SO NICE in there! It's almost like if you could just walk in and talk to someone you could get appointments right away . . . . but they want to see that you are motivated, and losing the weight is what shows them that you are. Keep it up! Riley :scared2:
  22. Yea I figure if nothing else I can be at goal weight by the time they call so that I don't have to wait over a month for the next appointment. I would really like to get this moving and it is very discouraging and hard to stay motivated when I don't don't have dates for my apointments. Even it if was not until April at least I would have something to work towards. Just trying to figure out how I can outsmart the waiting period and I think losing the weight before I see the surgeon might have me on the fast track after that point. At this point I am not even eligible for cancellations because you have to have an appointment to get a cancellation. Ughh..............really frustrated about it all. Maybe this week. Also I am vegetarian so I am tweaking the 1200. Probably not in the best way but it seems to be working. I am not sure I am eating the healthiest as I don't eat meat but I am losing so I must be doing something right. I am eating alot of the same things over and over and lots of water and soup. Soda is down to a couple of times a week. With all the water I don't crave it as much........drinking the crystal light which taste like it should be fattening but apparently isn't!!

    Expiration Date on food

it really depends on the product and what the stamp is itself. sometimes food (non-meat) is ok past the date - and what is the date - a sell by, or expiration? but with animal flesh, such as chicken, you have to be more careful. better safe than sorry - either eat it before it expires or throw it out... i don't like to waste either (and i'm a vegetarian, so i don't eat meat anyway) but with meat you have to be even more careful.
  24. calories in vs calories out i dont usually post about diet and whatever because im a vegetarian with a wicked sweet tooth...i try to stay under 1200 cal a day and work out and burn 300 3 to 4 times aweek usually will lose about a lb a week..

  25. I couldn't help it, I googled.... FUNNY - Vegetarians would have you believe that the "perfect" stool (that is, one uncontaminated by the consumption of animal parts) is the Floater. Many vegetarians have spent their entire lives in the Quest to produce perfection -- when in fact no particular diet can reliably produce Floaters. The vast majority of us bring forth Sinkers. SINKERS it is.... that my vote!! Sinkers really need a good P.R. person -- they have gotten a bad rap over the ages. Sure, Floaters are cute and all, but a good solid Sinker will never let you down. :sneaky:
