  1. I had a great post op visit today with the dietician. It was nice to receive a lot of positive reinforcement about all that I am doing!! Everyone at the bariatric center is impressed with my weight loss and the fact that my head is in the game. I am excited to continue my journey to a healthy weight! I am just about halfway there. The end result is actually a real possibility in my mind....not a pipe dream. For the first time in almost 18 years, the thought of the number on the scale starting with a "1" seems within my reach! I don't know where I will end up for a goal weight. I think the weight on the charts for me is too low....I will look emaciated. I want to get to someplace that I feel good, look good and can maintain with reasonable effort. I had another fill today---I am up to 5cc in my 10cc band, They really support small, frequent fills at this point. I have an appointment already set up for next month.....I can always cancel it if I am still in my green zone. Sorry for "bragging".......it just feels good to be succeeding! Jackie

    What are PB's?

Pb's are productive burps. Burps containing food, etc in other words. I am so sorry about your loss. I am also sorry about your rough time so far. Have you been back to your band doctor? I think you should call him. Best of luck to you.

    What are PB's?

I was so saddened to read about your loss. I hope you have gone back to your lap-band doctor and have found some support. And please remember, we are here to listen too! May God give you the comfort and healing you need at this time! My prayers are with you!

    Surgery & Psoriasis

I have Psoriasis since I was around 13YO. It is awful the way people treat us!! I can say this and I'm not sure if it is all due to my WLS but it has helped so much. I usually have a huge breakout after Summer is over. I do think that is from being outside when I go for my walk, the sun works. Then there is the side that I can't handle much heat due to having a 3rd-degree sunburn when I was around 8YO. I am over 4 years out and I had a big breakout. I went to the Dermatologist hoping to get some of the new medication. She wouldn't give me the one that is a shot due to NOW GET THIS!! She told me that it might cause weight loss and that I didn't need to lose any more weight. WOW!! I am so used to being told that I am too fat. LOL Then she wouldn't give any meds before I went thru this bunch of bloodwork. LOL Thank goodness it got better. She did give me a cream for it. I really believe that mine gets worse with how high my stress is. Kind of hard to not stress when you have OCD going on. LOL Every month when I pay bills I get a few more patches. LOl I hope you get the relief you need. How bad is yours? I am classified as Moderate. But back quite a few years I had it everywhere. The DR wanted me to drive 17 miles 5 days a week for ultraviolet treatments. NOT!!! It is a horrible thing. I'm sure you have been there done that before. As I said above fingers crossed heck legs too that you get relief also. Take care and keep us posted on your journey.

    Surgery & Psoriasis

Wow that is awful about the strictures. Glad they were easy fixes and you haven’t had any other issues. You’re weight loss is amazing. I live in Orting, Washington. It’s only about a 3hr drive to Portland from my house. My husband and I were just in Cannon Beach Oregon this weekend for our anniversary. It’s so beautiful there. So cool that our stats are pretty close. I’m starting off about 7-8lbs heavier but your current weight is my “fantasy” goal weight. I’m praying the sleeve will help me get there. This week I start getting very serious about my nutrition. I’ve slacked off because I knew we were having our anniversary weekend but I have to buckle down and get through the holidays. I’m hoping to have surgery by the end of March. I have all the insurance restrictions to deal with in the meantime. I’ve thought about how terrible sweet n low must be for us if it can be used for that. Lol I’ve tried the T-Gel before and it doesn’t really do much for me anymore. I use Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner (no parabens or sulfates that can aggravate psoriasis). I also use Dermarest from Walgreens. It kinda helps too. It’s a frustrating condition. Omg it would be great to live close to someone understands what this is all about! But we do have the good ole internet and we really aren’t terribly far away. Lots of liquid sunshine now with scattered flurries up this way. I’m Julie, by the way. It’s great chatting with you and is really nice to know I’m not completely alone in this.
  6. I suspect that your family and friends don't understand the operation. I found an ABC news story about Khaliah Ali's book about her weight loss due to lap-band surgery. The article includes an excerpt from her book in which she does an excellent job of explaining the surgery and benefits. I suggest you send out this link and/or print off some copies of the article to hand to your friends and loved ones to help them understand what you're doing. It might help you to read it, too. It helped me. ABC News: Excerpt: Khaliah Ali's 'Fighting Weight' Some people are uninformed, some are envious, and some are just mean or negative. And frankly, there are some people that would rather we remain fat for a variety of reasons. They may not even realize why they feel the way they do. It doesn't mean they don't love you or care about you but they're not necessarily showing it in the way that's best for you. If they take the time to read this and other articles and still have concerns, you can politely ask then to respect the fact that you have researched this, you know the risks, you are under the care of a doctor, and you would appreciate it if they would respect your decision, even if they can't support it. This is one reason why I'm not telling many people -- not because I can't handle it if they don't support me but because I'm not in the mood to educate others right now. Maybe later. Good luck! You're doing the right thing to come here for support.
  7. I was sleeved on January 8th, 2015. I have lost 48 lbs since January 2nd ( pre op diet). I had to have gall bladder surgery 5 weeks post op! I started noticing about 4 weeks ago that I had begun to lose hair. I could tell in the shower after shampooing I would have a pretty good bit on my hands. I didn't think anything much about it until I got my hair dyed and cut the other day. My hairdresser noticed it. I have fine hair but I had a pretty good but. I am thinking it is from lack of protein. I take 2 biotin pills a day. The thing is, I just don't know how to get the protein in. I use fitness pal and I know that I have been getting about 40 grams a day. Some one suggested "Isopure" drinks. Also, will I ever regrow the hair I have lost? What are some of your opinions? My husband is bald. I cannot be his twin! Thank you for any suggestions.

    Hair Loss oh no!

Started loosing my hair also but I get my protein in daily, and take biotin along with my daily vitamin. I have tons of new hair growth now and have stopped losing completely. Oh and it started around the 5 month mark for me and I am almost at 9 months now
  9. I haven't visited the forums in a long time! But things have been great so I wanted toupdate all of you that helped me so much in the early part of my journey. And just a few questions for old-times sake! 1) I am 4 months post op TODAY! and I have lost 67lbs since surgery, and 72lbs since my highest weight. It's amazing!!!! I didn't think I would lose THIS much! now I'm dreaming of weighing 140lbs....I'm only 45lbs away from goal! it's insane! 2) I FINALLY started an exercise program. I bought one of those mini trampolines, and I've been doing "rebounding" it's great, and really fun, easy on your joints. I think everyone should do it!!!! 3) I am a size 14! 5) I don't count my carbs :-x I know everyone was so worried about the carbs. But I haven't been counting them and I do just fine. I make sensible food choices (yogurt, whole wheat Pasta, cheese, veggies, fruit, seafood etc) and it seems to work just fine for me. Lastly....I haven't lost my hair. AT ALL! Is it going to happen still? I keep waiting, and no sign of hair loss!
  10. Thank you for such a beautiful reply, Astrasmom. I know this is a life-altering, life-saving decision I have made. (that we have ALL made). I will be getting my test results back on June 4th and either get the nod from my doctor, or not at that time. Then on to the insurance company! In the meantime, my body seems to have adjusted to the weight loss diet of 1200 cals a day. I feel so READY for this!! I think attitude, attention to detail, and willingness to ask for help will be key for me. I'll take my concerns to my doctor  I have heard such wonderful things about his skill as a surgeon; his bedside manner is somewhat "unique", but so far I have found him to be FUN--and thorough! Thank you again for your response. ~hiddn

    weight gain

It could be something more serious if you're gaining weight without a diet change. Perhaps a serious medical, hormonal or prescription issue? You said you moved too, maybe stress/depression; it plays a HUGE roll on weight gain/loss. Definitely be persistent in getting in touch with your doctors. I'm sorry they've been so difficult to deal with. Try to do an elimination diet, maybe the shakes aren't taking well to your body now after some time. I know when something works for me (even in a positive way) I find my body builds a tolerance for it and it never works the same way! I'm unsure if you can have two procedures entirely different from one another, but I'm sure it is possible. I can't imagine it being terribly healthy or wise though, I'm sure your surgeon would have a better understanding of your body.

    Still losing my hair!

I had my surgery on Sept 18 and I am still also losing hair. It has gotten to the point that I don't wash my hair as often because I am so tired of pulling the hair out of the drain after each shower. I lose enough in the shower that it clogs the drain. I also hate to brush my hair since I get a handful in each brush. My hair won't hold a curl any longer either. Not sure why, but I used to dry it then put curlers in it for about an hour and the curl would hold for two days. Now I take the curlers out and the hair goes stick straight within minutes. I eat alot of protein in each meal and either drink a 35 gm shake or a 49 gm protein shot every day so my protein intake is sometimes more than 100 gms a day. I asked my surgeon and all he says is "take more protein" and "it will grow back". I had chemo and know it is not a death sentence to be bald, but this is not what I expected. I am finally thinner but people are not noticing, all they say is "what did you do to your hair?"

    Still losing my hair!

i was just going to write a post about loosing hair. I am in my third month and just started loosing hair. I brush my hair and a whole bunch just comes out. I have a doctor's appoitment on Wednesday so i am going to ask, but just like you i am eating enough protein, take vitamines, use the right shampoo. Maybe i need to start taking biotin. I have very thin hair to begin with, and if its temporary, i am not afraid but what do i do in the meantime to decrease amount of the loss?

    Living In Groton

Any idea why? I found that when I went from liquid to solids my weight loss slowed drastically.
  16. Sorry, I'm not local. I hope you can find a local support group or mentor. Keep in mind that if you do find a general WLS support group, band patients have very different experiences that bypass patients. You can't compare your weight loss to theirs. We achieve about the same results at year 3 and beyond, but they lose much faster at first and have very different issues (sorry if u know this already). You can use those of us on these boards who've been banded years ago for on-line support. Studies show that people who actively track their progress and use on-line support achieve better results than not actively involved in some form of support program.
  17. I am sorry the ER cant/wont help you. Hopefully you surgeon can prioritise your surgery and get you in quick. you will be fine! gastric bypass will certainly help you with your weight loss. I have a freind who has lost 110lbs since jan 5th, 2010. I hope you feel better with your stomache problems. Please let us know how your doing! J

    Pre-Op Advice

Weight loss surgery for dummies and Alex's book The big book on gastric bypass which he advertise on here are both wonderful step by step before during and after info.. I have both and 10 months out I still refer to it. Practice eating slow now Get a small travel pillow (I used a pillow pet ) to use when getting up for the first few days Belly band, the hospital gave me one but some do not. I wore this the first two weeks when moving around Take your measurements before and monthly, don't just focused on the scale. Good luck!!

    Hair Loss

As you already know, it takes three months to see the effects. Once you fix the cause it will take three months for it to completely stop. You won't be losing clumps for three months but it will slowly subside until you are no longer shedding. Keep taking the Vitamins, make sure you are getting at least 60 grams of Protein and stay calm and give it time. The three main hair loss causes for us are lack of nutrition (vitamins), lack of protein and trauma from surgery/sudden dietary change/weight loss (which will resolve itself with a little time). I went through it and came out fine. I have baby fine thin hair and it was noticeable for a while but has grown back thicker than it was pre-surgery. Hair thickening shampoos help to get your through it. I really like a brand called Samy Fat Hair. I no longer need it though.

    Discouraged

@@jennabela If you're not getting enough fluids - that could definitely be a problem. Increase Protein and fluids and see what happens! You started at a low BMI compared to most of us - so your weight loss will be slower. Remember to think of it in terms of % of loss - you've lost 18.5% of your weight in 6 months. That's not a bad loss at all! Inches are definitely just as good as pounds! I bet if you increase protein and fluids you'll see the scale move again!!! Stay strong!!!

    NOT excercising at all

I stopped exercising after a couple of months (I was walking on my treadmill) because of my low energy & low blood pressure. The day I almost fell off due to being so tired & light headed I decided enough. It’s true. Exercise contributes very little to actual weight loss. But it does contribute to your general health. It also increases your appetite to compensate for the calories you’ve burnt. I still don’t exercise but try to be active in other ways. Dash up & down the stairs in my house. Park further away from where I’m going. Walk at a pace around shopping centres etc. Take stairs when possible. Walk to the local shops. It all helps.
  22. Wanted to be sure all of you bandsters or those of you interested in learning about bands were aware of the NW Weight Loss Conference in Portland OR 10/28 through 10/30. Check it out here. Dr. Emma Patterson will be speaking and Sandi and Gloria of Banded Living will be conducting a table talk and presenting a break out session. Look forward to meeting some of you there!

    Coloring Your Hair

My sleeve was 6/26 and I just had my hair colored. No problem
  24. Kris

    Coloring Your Hair

I colored my hair regularly (every 6-8 weeks or so) after getting sleeved. You're going to have some hair loss no matter what and I don't think the hair coloring exacerbates the issue too terribly much. I do recommend you get your hair colored as close in time prior to getting sleeved as possible, because for sure the 4-6 weeks following surgery you're not going to want to mess with things like that (if you color your own hair).
  25. Wow!!!Congrats on the fast weight loss. I am one of the slow losers....I had my surgery last July and am down only 60 lbs. That's a bit slower than my surgeon wants me to lose, but he tries to adjust the band to where I can lose no more than 3 lbs or less than 1 pound a week. He really likes it when I lose 2 lbs a week. So I am going to have to go back for another fill soon. I have 7cc's in my 10cc band now and hope that the next fill gets me closer to the "sweet spot". I am really impressed with your will power and the weight loss. Don't think I could stand a whole pound of baby carrots, even though I like them a lot!!
