Need ideas on food, etc. What are you eating?
SwanGal posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What kind of things are you eating, or were eating, when you were on liquids and then mushies. And then once you started real food what were you eating? I am worried I won't lose weight. I don't know why I am thinking like this. I am eating right now things like liquid yogurt, cream Soups strained, sugar free popsicles, and lots of Water. I have not lost anything since my surgery Wed. In fact, I've gained five pounds! ACK! Maybe it's water weight gain from the IV fluids?? Anyone else gain weight right after surgery? Help with ideas please! -
Need ideas on food, etc. What are you eating?

Hi! I didn't gain but I did not loose weight the days I was on liquid. I think your body panics and is affraid it needs the fat to live off of! Once I went to mushie food, I started seeing the scale go down! As far as what I'm eating, I made meatloaf and mashed potatos one night, chili another night and I have baked potato soup in the crock pot now. I have also had refried Beans with hamburger meat and cheese on it. I have had eggs and yogurt. -
Successful losers what is a days food for you?
Daisalana replied to Liz1531's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I eat b'fast maybe 2 times a week. It consists of a yoplait key lime whips yogurt (num num).. or about 8 grapes mixed in 1/2 tbsp of cream cheese & a dash of brown sugar. The rest of the time it's either coffee or a Slimfast Optima royal fudge if I remember to grab one out of the fridge. Normally don't eat lunch, but if I do, I get a soup or pick at DH's appetizers at a restaurant (Chili's, O' Charleys, TGIF's etc.). Too tight and still not majorly hungry yet, so very little. For dinner, I make something for me & DH and I work around what I can eat. For example I made pot roast last week.. couldn't eat the meat, but I made mashed potatos with it.. so I put a small scoop of potatos in a bowl and ladeled the pot roast juice on top. Made it very soupy and it filled me up. Or if I cook something with chicken, I eat mushy veggies with a sauce from the chicken. Sometimes I heat up 1/2 can of a campbell's soup for me if DH is going to order pizza. Sometimes I'll pick some veggies off of the pizza (pizza mushrooms are the best some reason). I have a hard time with solids for the most part right now, and I know there's something to eating solid foods because they keep you full longer.. but I've found with the restriction I'm at, liquids fill me up just as much as solids did before I had this restriction. So it works for me! -
Speaking of awesome sauce, CREAMY PROTEIN DIPPING SAUCE, 3 GRAMS PROTEIN PER OUNCE
tamg26k replied to latido's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
Sounds delicious! I make a version of this with Greek yogurt and either spicy southwestern mustard or hot wing sauce and put in on chicken. Tastes delicious and makes it easier to eat. -
Make sure that they are all actual meals and that the other 2 aren't "Snacks." And also, eat them on a schedule when you're actually hungry or getting hungry, not just because they exist and you were told to eat them. Somedays (especially after a good workout) I am starving and feeling hungry many times a day. Other days (rest days usually) I'm not that hungry and normally eat maybe twice, with a string cheese or a yogurt in between to stop me from having any headaches. You're grazing when you run to your fridge, take a bite or two of something and then go away...then return 15 minutes later to do the same thing. If you're sitting down and focused on a balanced meal, comprised mostly of Protein, and you're treating it like a meal, then it's a meal.

First day on pureed phase - and I wanted to puke
katmandu replied to gc>'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same issues with certain foods. Keep trying different types. Best for me was ricotta with marinara and a little Parmesan or FF refried beans with puréed salsa and Greek yogurt for sour cream. -
I had my gallbladder out a month ago, I was 8 months post sleeve. I never was put on any meds to prevent it. I had a gallbladder attack that sent me to the er 2 months before my chole. It was the worst pain of my life! I had 4 more attacks that I managed at home and was in pain every day. My surgeon couldn't do my chole so she referred me to another general surgeon. I knew him already because I work at the hospital I had my surgery done at. He did a single incision lap chole, they just went through my belly button! It was so cool I have no scars! My diet has improved so much since I had it. Before I was eating yogurt and protein shakes and now I'm back to normal. I do have alot more gas then I ever did, normally bad in the morning. And my bowl movements have been very irregular. I am glad I got it removed and didn't try to manage it. The surgery was a breeze, my OR time was 730 and I was on my way home by 130!

Brand New to VSG Idea -- Suggestions?
Tiffykins replied to MorganCath's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I added you to my friend's list, and sent you a comment on your profile with the link to my blog on here for you to peruse. The hair loss thing is temporary. The post-op liquid diet is max 2-4 weeks, and full liquids include pudding, yogurt, oatmeal/hot cereals (thinned out), Protein shakes with milk, so it's only temporary as well. Gastrographin is a contrast Fluid that is used for leak detection and it's colorless and flavorless, it actually tastes like flat unsweetened sprite (in my opinion), kind of like when you get a soda and the syrup level is low so it's all icky tasting, it's not horrible and it's a small amount. I only had drains because I had a leak repair post-vsg revision from the band they are more cumbersome than anything, not painful, just annoying. Urinary catheter never had one. Dumping is pretty uncommon. A lot of us that experience issues with sugar, or high fat have been able to pinpoint it down to high milk fat. My issue is butter cream frosting, and fondant. Other than that I can pound back the Reese's Peanut Butter cups without issue LOL. One good "lie" about VSG surgery you can use is, "I'm having ulcer surgery". It's post-op is really similar to VSG, lots of liquids, lots of sipping to let the stomach heal. The first 2 weeks are typically the most difficult. Exhaustion, and fatigue are common due to lack of calories, and general recovering from major surgery. The more walking, sipping fluids the better. Best wishes in your research. -
On Tuesday I got a tiny fill of .2 cc's. I stayed on liquids and then mushies and then on Friday I tried real food. I had no problems. Yesterday I ate real food and even ate out at supper with no problems. This morning I drank my coffee and took my meds- 9 pills total- no problem. Then at noon I tried to eat some Greek Yogurt. I ate it slowly. It took almost 40 minutes to finish it and it got stuck. I threw it up. Now when I drink I can feel my liquids trickling down and If I take a big drink rather than a sip it feels like it's going to come back up. I burp a lot and then it will finally go down. What's the deal? I swallowed my pills this morning with no issues so what's going on now? Is it possible I irritated my band by swallowing the pills? They were all small except for 2 and those 2 were gelcaps.

You girls are lucky.....At preop all I was allowed to have was optifast shake every 2.5 hours, and water...That was it. No yogurt, no lettuce, no fruit or veggies. I did drop 11 lbs before the surgery though. Good luck ladies....The 2 weeks after surgery were the hardest for me on the liquid diet. I am 4 days shy of being 4 weeks post op. I start solids on Friday and I cannot wait

I think I may have ate to fast. It tasted really good. I was excited because the fish had 20 Protein in it. I've been getting most of my protein from shakes and greek yogurt so I thought this would be a great way to get my protein in. I will try it again next week. I still have to figure out my signal. As far as portion sizes it really just varies on what it is that I'm eating. I can eat a cup of greek yogurt. This morning I ate 1 cup of chex Cereal and 1 cup of milk. On the other hand I made the ricotta bake and I could only eat 1/4c-1/2c. Refried Beans same thing. I can eat 1 string cheese which fills me too. Yhanks for the responses!

Menstrual Question And Tightening Of The Band... Ladies? :-)
Secret Bandit posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry fellas, I think this may be a ladies-only type of question!! I noticed in the last couple of days that my band has felt more restricting. I haven't had a fill recently, and in fact, I am supposed to be getting one on Tuesday, Feb 7th (which now, I am figuring that we will just put-off for another month or so). My last fill was December 17th and it was 3cc in my 10cc band. This is the only fill I have had. I just noticed in the last couple of days (yesterday and today) that I am having trouble getting solids down. Either they will get stuck completely, they come back up, or I have to wait a while for them to go down. When I do get solids down without a problem, they are usually mushier solids (like fluffy eggs, cheese, yogurt, Soups, etc). Well, today I got my period, and I wonder if there is a correlation between getting your period, and the tightening of the band? If not, does anyone know of any other reason why all of a sudden I might be having difficulties? band slipping? I will check with my doc on Tuesday at my appt, but I figured I would ask the forum first! Thanks everyone! -
The fruit and yogurt parfait from McDonalds, and they are yummy!

Hello Ladies, I think I have good restriction now after fill 2. I haven't had a full blown PB yet but have serveral times felt that stuck feeling and some slime. Not enough to vomit. I also noticed if I swallow too fast I get painful hiccups. I've even swallowed too quick with yogurt. I haven't lost any in 3 weeks since fill, though so I know I need to pick up the exercise and Water routine. I painted my son's room and this morning was sore from climbing my little step ladder up/down. Also had a sore butt and arms. I also noticed my hair is coming out in more strands than ususal. I was bad all week not drinking my Protein. I usually eat chicken or some kind of meat and yogurt, but not enough, I guess. I really wish I was down 50 by now. I'm also been eating more junk food. chips hotsauce, ice cream. I need to get with it. I do feel a lot better though. I've noticed I can sit in a booth table without my belly rubbing against. I also put on a pair of shorts the other day, I havent worn in 4 years. Felt great! I think you all are doing great. You really inspire me to work harder 6 Days exercise level 1

Thanks so much margomarie. I was able to get rid of the cpap but it took a little time. Partly because I had to schedule another sleep study to confirm that the sleep apnea was resolved. Keep positive thoughts and be patient. The hormone changes following major surgery are very common. The first few weeks post-op can be something of an emotional roller coaster ride but they usually subside before you know it. Hang in there! No energy, tired and weak are all very common and when you think about it, probably no surprise. Your body is concentrating all of its resources toward the healing process. That's a good thing! But it takes a lot of energy. Perhaps the best thing you can do is get plenty of rest and let your body do its thing. Keep in mind also that it is important to get as much of your doctor's recommended daily Protein as soon as you can. For the ladies that's usually 60g to 80g a day. That can be challenging the first few weeks but it's important to keep working on it. On a low carb diet your body will turn to protein for energy. Getting as much as you can as soon as you can should help with the energy loss. The yogurt and cottage cheese - great ideas!! Most folks find that protein supplements (shakes, powders, etc) are a big help as well. Congratulations on your surgery! It is an amazing, life-changing journey. Are you in the L.A. area? You're gonna love the new you!!

Thanks, i'm sure you will hear from me alot as I get through this. I am also online Mon-Fri from 9-5 at work. It's so hard for me because I have been such an unhealthy eater for so long. This morning I had to force myself to eat yogurt. It was the first time in my life eating it and I didn't really like it but I needed to eat something. This is a big struggle for me. But let me know how you do with the chicken? How are you eating it? Mashed up?

Puréed diet starting next week
gpmed replied to kayjay14's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ate a lot of cottage cheese and Greek yogurt during that phase. I also picked up a tiny bit of fish from the Whole Foods hot bar to try. -
Darn, you peeps spoke to soon. We could have really messed with Nicole's head and told her she's the only one! Nicole, are you kidding? You, the only naughty one? Pa-leeezzze! But I just enjoyed a delicious dish of fresh fruit with a blob of cherry whipped yogurt. It was really heavenly, but it was NOT candy. (In your best Sinade O'Connor - singing to the candy) Nothing compares, noTHING COMpares, to yoooooooooooooou.

I had 3 days I did not lose weight when I changed to phase 2 of diet. I did not worry about it to much. I am now down 18 pound and am feeling great. My husband had his surgery today and is doing well. He says his stomach is growling and he is hungry. I have been getting my 60 grams of protien barely and my 64 oz of fluid. It is hard because I am not hungry and the soup is getting old. I got tired of tasting the protein powder in every thing I eat and drink so I am now having a flavored greek yogurt for breakfast with 11 g of protien an Isopure drink with 40 g of protien maybe a shake or an egg. I eat soup for lunch just for the taste. The longer I stay on the phase 2 the less I want to eat ever. I seem to be sensitive to smells as well. I am excited about the weight loss and pray my husband recovers as quickly as I have.

Question about pre-made meals?
pearlandgirl replied to twiggyinhiding's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Has anyone tried the frozen entree by Angelo's that is Eggplant and Chicken Parmesan? It is so good! I eat 1/2 for lunch one day and the other 1/2 the next day. I usually have a yogurt with it too. My doctor said the Lean Cuisine's are okay, but its hard finding some without pasta or rice. -
First, I want to say that I am happy with my weight loss so far (23 pounds in 7 weeks), although it is slowing significantly to less than 1 kg (2 lb) per week the last three weeks. Next, I want to say that I understand that there seem to be as many diet plans after the sleeve as there are dietitians. I actually have an appointment with a different dietitian who was recommended to me by a friend who has also had VSG, as a "second opinion" on what my primary dietitian (who works with my surgeon) has told me. When I spoke with this other dietitian on the phone she agreed with me that the diet my current dietitian has me on might not be the best choice for me. My current dietitian also uses basically the same diet for people with the band and sleeve, just reducing the calories a bit for the sleeve versus the band. The liquid stage was fairly standard. In the puree stage I was told that half of every puree should be lean Protein, a quarter should be non-starchy veg, and a quarter should be grain-based starch (rather than potato or other starchy veg), because the grain-based starches give us B1 and other important Vitamins. OK. This worked fine, even though it seemed a lot more specific than most people have for the puree phase. Then, he didn't really have a soft food stage, but just moved me straight to full foods, giving me some advice about things that I may have trouble tolerating at first. It turns out I haven't had trouble tolerating anything. The thing I am having trouble with is the composition of the full food diet. His advice is a lot different from almost everything I see here. Here is the guideline he told me: 1. I am to have a balanced meal, not particularly high in protein or particularly low in carb or fat. This is to make sure that I'm getting all the nutrients I need. 2. I should be eating around 1000 calories a day. He reckons I am burning around 1800 calories a day and this will promote a 2-4 kg (4-8 lb) loss per month. 3. I should not count calories. Instead I should be using an exchange diet as follows: a. 3-4 servings a day of grain-based carbs. A serve is one slice of bread, 1/2 cup rice, 1 cup Pasta (1/2 cup if it's dense or small), or 2-4 whole grain crackers depending the size. b. Max 1 serving starchy vegetables a day. A serving is 1 medium potato or 1/2 cup mashed potato c. 4 servings other vegetables a day. A serving is 1/2 cup cooked veggies or 1 cup of salad d. 1-3 servings fruit a day. A serving is 5-6 strawberries, 1 medium apple, 1 medium orange, 2 small mandarines, 2 plums, etc. e. 4 servings dairy a day. A serving is 1/2 cup milk or yogurt, or 1 slice of cheese (like the Kraft slices) f. A palm-sized 1 cm (1/2 inch) thick amount of protein, spread over 2-3 meals, per day. g. One teaspoon of fat or oil per day, or 1/8 avocado h. A max of 2 alcoholic drinks per week, and a max of 2 Desserts or other "treats" per week I am nervous that this diet has too many calories and too little protein. I am also nervous about the idea of not logging my food (he is strongly against logging and counting calories, because he doesn't think it is a natural behavior for live). I am also nervous that it is so different from what most people seem to be doing. Is anyone else here on a similar "exchange" type diet, instead of having a set number of calories or protein per day? Is anyone else on a diet that is radically different from the high-protein low-carb low-fat diet that most people seem to use?

Yes my personal favorite is Fage. In the beginning I put stevia in it to sweeten it up. Oh and when you get to the yogurt stage stevia, pumpkin purée, pumpkin pie spice and a bit if vanilla! Yum. Plain Greek yogurt grows on you. In my early days it was hard to stomach unsweetened. But now it's my favorite meal a day Fage plain and frozen blueberries. In fact just not "right" if I don't eat it at least once a day..

I'm getting sleeved Tuesday and have a questions about yogurt in a post-op diet. For those without chunks of fruit, I like lemon and lime - are they more acidic (could they cause more trouble than other flavors)?
-
I know it is kind of weird I'm on liquids for two weeks (which I'm still on) but could have yogurt and sf pudding. Every doctor and nut are different.
