    self pay option

I JUST FOUND OUT THAT MY INSURANCE IS NOT GOING TO PAY FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY FOR AT LEAST 6 TO 12 MONTHS AS THEY RESEARCH THE COMPLICATION RATE. I WOULD LIKE YOUR FEED BACK ON WHICH OPTION I SHOULD DO. 1. kEEP ON THE MEDICAL SUPERVISED WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM THAT I AM ON (I'M CURRENTLY LOSSING A POUND AWEEK) 2. LOOK AT SELF PAY OPTIONS (MAY NOT BE FINICIALLY FEASIBLE AT THIS TIME) 3. WAIT AND SEE IF INSURANCE WILL COVER IT NEXT YEAR (TURN 65 IN 2020 WITH MEDICARE)
  2. Hello everyone my name is Christian I'm 38 years old and I reside in Manhattan, New York. I've been overweight all my life but on may 16th of 2018 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with no complications, hypertension and high cholesterol, so that day I made a decision to change my life and start loving myself... I quit drinking soda and drinking any type os sugary drinks, instead I drink water.. In fact water is all I drink now and I stopped eating Chinese takeout and eating more homemade healthy meals. I've chosen to VSG surgery because out of all the other types of Bariatric surgeries vsg is the best in my opinion. I haven't started the process yet which I was told will take 6 months but I'm already covered by my insurance so that's a good thing.. On September 11th I have a follow up with my pcp on that day i plan on starting the process for vsg surgery, I wish all of you the best in your journey if anyone likes they can follow me on instagram@vsg_redemption [emoji4] Sent from my SM-N950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    How old were you when?

@Bryn910 don’t feel bad. Stuff happens. Just keep going and you’ll get there, nothing to be embarrassed about. Best of luck to you. I’m having one too, but to something else but everyone is different. Mine has to do with a complication, not losing weight.
  4. GIVE IT TIME!! It DOES get better, especially once you can have solid food again. The only thing I regret is that I allow myself to 'graze' too often, so I am only maintaining at 150 lbs lost instead of losing. I am 5 years out from a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, with no complications.

    August Sleevers-How are you doing??

I was sleeved 8/2, though it feels like its been months. I had early nausea with water, and SF drinks were hard, but I got through it without getting dehydrated. My surgery was complicated by the fact that the surgeon found a GIST tumor on my stomach. She removed it, and the oncologist said it was unlikely to return, so I guess I was very lucky in that sense. Food has been hard. Soft foods have been pretty dull, and I still do not get in all of my protein daily. It has been a month now, and I have only lost 20 pounds, so feeling disappointed, quite frankly. I was very tired the first couple of weeks, but more back to normal now. Another complication were very tender spots all over my pannus area where I was self-injecting Lovenox for 2 weeks (as I am on Warfarin normally). The areas got very hard, tender, and red, but the surgeon said they weren't infected, and so now no longer tender, but still hard, and the skin is discolored. I had a few incidents of eating over my 1/4 cup and felt it immediately. It was NOT a fun feeling. Lately I have not even wanted to eat because it is so boring and tasteless, and there isn't a lot of actual hunger, just head hunger, mainly for pizza and Coke, lol, but I am being good. Over all, I wish things were moving faster. I guess I expected to lose, like 10 pounds a week.
  6. I regret having the surgery. I did have complications but even beyond that I regret it. I didn’t give it enough thought or research before choosing to have it. I wish I’d never done it. It is freaking me out that I could eat something now that will make me throw up and that I have to spend months and months figuring that out. I want to have coffee and sweets and beer. Right now I’m on a feeding tube and protein shakes and water. I’m praying that once I can eat food and start being able to add stuff in that my feelings will change. But I’m realizing that food was a much bigger part of who I am than I realized.
  7. Not yet, youre Perioperative and still at risk for some major complications. Hold off/out as long as you can https://www.verywellhealth.com/marijuana-and-surgery-3156981 https://www.google.com/amp/s/hightimes.com/health/safe-use-cannabis-after-surgery/amp/

    Is this price outrageous? (NYC!)

Hello! I had my sleeve surgery back in 2014 and I just the first of two plastic surgeries done this past July. I waited until I was at my goal weight and said these surgeries would be a treat to myself if I maintained my weight for a few years. My start weight 242, lowest was 138 and now I’m at 160. I like myself best at 150. My first surgery was a J upper body lift and breast lift. Those surgeries were $18,200. The next surgery will be a lower body lift which includes fat transfer to the buttocks and some Other technique so you’re not left with a flat butt. This surgery will be around $30,000 Im a researcher and I did a lot of it before I selected a surgeon. My goal was to look good naked. Hard to do with most of the horrific scars left over from these surgeries. My research led me to Dr. Agha in Newport Beach, CA. A one hour plane ride or 6 hour car ride from my home. Are there better deals out there? Sure. His website showcases before/after pics showing the scars. They are thin, low and perfectly straight. That sealed the deal for me. I’m 5 weeks out from my surgery without complications and my scars are razor thin. No regrets!

    Assumptions

I'm not sure if this applies... but I was talking to my dad this past weekend about us getting close to trying for our first baby. He literally is so concerned about my "health" and how this surgery could have caused complications that will take my life in the process of carrying/delivering a child. I tried to explain to him.... I'm healthier now than I ever was prior. I will have a healthier pregnancy now than at 330lbs. Also, people at work (who don't know I've had WLS) think I'm obsessive. They always make comments, sometimes joking, sometimes not joking, about my dieting choices. And the worst of it is, they see me eating something and poke fun. Today I was chomping on some sugar snap peas, and they found it hilarious. Meanwhile, I don't laugh at them when I see them chowing down on some M&Ms. They also peer pressure me into making bad choices. We had cake for a baby celebration in the office, and I was bullied into a piece. I begrudgingly took it into my office and threw it away. Ultimately, I think I make them self conscious about their food choices.
  10. It's up to you, but current medical data (plus patient satisfaction surveys and long-term outcome studies) indicate greater success, satisfaction, and fewer late complications with the sleeve or WLS procedures other than the l-band. Some patients do well; but the adjusting, etc, plus later chance of ulceration, need to remove it, etc... Consider a good discussion with your surgeon to discuss all procedures, your own medical hx, then decide what you feel you want. Most wls surgeons don't even offer the band now, given success v complication rates. Good luck. Choose wisely and I hope all goes well.
  11. All, Let us please bear up our dear friend @Frustr8 as she undergoes RNY Surgery today. She is 73years young and has been an amazing support to me and to so many others as we went through our procedures. She has had so many personal, financial and other attacks leading up to the surgery and is really going through a tough time, many have tried to desuade her from going through with it, but she is resolved to trust the Living God and go through with it. Spirit of the living God, do what only you can do. Please bear our beautiful sister @Frustr8 up today and always. We ask that you bless her from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet. That you give her peace and encouragement going into her procedure and that all things coming against her boomerang right back to where they came from and away from your daughter. We pray for everyone who is going to come into contact with her or touch her, we pray and plead the blood of Jesus on the facility, over the check in clerk, over the nurses who tend to her, over the surgeon, over the anesthesiologist, over the the medications, over the equipment, God even over the linens that will touch her body and the, and the sutures and bandaids, we uplift and exalt the whole procedure, that you yourself with masterfully operate on your daughter. We pray everything goes without a glitch, we pray for her to wake without any complications, and for it to be like from a sweet sleep, we pray that she is in no pain and discomfort and that she is soon able to be up and about to everyones surprise and delight! And that her short and long term results are marvelous to your Glory! We thank you in Advance Lord for your mercy's for we know that you are MORE than able! In Jesus Name, Amen.
  12. I had my lap band removed, and there was a complication that required me to get a drain put in. I’m supposed to go back to work on Monday, but not sure if I’ll get my drain out by then. Did any of you go back to work while your drain was still in? I don’t want to, but I didn’t know if I was being unreasonable
  13. I have also had success with the band. I followed all the drs instructions and have no regrets because it changed my life for the better. I started out at 276 and I’m 178 now! The way I eat is completely different now. I work out and I diet like a normal person. I don’t try to beat the band or see what slides down. I have had zero complications and it has been years. My favorite food used to be chicken wings. I can’t eat them anymore, new fav food is sushi. My taste buds have changed. I used to love chocolate anything. I now eat a balanced diet and have incorporated yogurt, vegetables I can digest, salad is tough sometimes, soups, ground turkey, and even tofu. I don’t crave meat because I can’t really eat it but I try to get my protein where I can. All good things and hope to lose another 45 lbs. and I will continue to do my best everyday. Good luck!

Soo ... I actually had bread and alcohol, and so much other stuff at 3 weeks out. BUT, I knew this was not wise. I didn't come here asking if it was a good idea, I knew it wasn't. And I took full responsibility for the gain I had that week, and if I had had any other complications for it. I think it comes down to accepting personal responsibility.
  15. From your mouth to God's ears. We are not identical machines. We all have different levels of broken-ness. For the past 3 months, I've been trying to up my calories from my present 550-800 cals per day. If I eat at the 750-800 cal level long enough (ie about 3-5 days). I will gain weight. I'm not talking glycogen/water stores either. LOL. It's ridiculous! So for me to lose, I have to work like a demon to make sure my diet is clean. And it's also complicated by the fact that I can eat a pretty normal qty of food now... So you see? We're all so unique!

    Surgery today!!!

It’s normal to be a bit anxious. Stay away from anything negative on the internet. Focus on getting ready, make sure you are packed and ready to go. I looked at a lot of Instagram photos, before and after with no stories really to inspire me. Remember complications are rare. See you on the other side.
  17. I had VSG on August 30th everything went well, no complications. I was sent home the next day. I have been doing everything I was told to do, walk, exercise lungs, clear liquids the first 2 days the after you can have pudding popsicles etc. Now it’s been 5 days since the surgery but I’m still having a hard time. I’m still in pain, a lot of pain Only in the place where all the action happened though. It hurts to breathe, cough, sneeze, laugh, or even move. It hurts when sitting up or if I try to stand straight up. I don’t know why but I feel like I should be feeling better even if it’s just the tiniest bit. I don’t feel sick or have a fever it’s just the pain and it’s not gas pains. I feel like I shouldn’t be feeling the same amount of pain as the first day I came home. If there’s Anyone that’s farther along in their journey with any insight please comment. Let me know if anyone else felt the same way and what helped the healing along. I’m willing to take any suggestions at this point.

    SHOULD I DO IT?

I had DS surgery but what I can say is do your research on everything. The surgery, the surgeon, the food phases before and after, how your body will change, etc. Know what you are getting into. I had very little pain after surgery, more soreness than anything else, and (so far) haven't had any major complications. I hope everything goes well for you.
  19. Thanks EQ! I had a read there, what I had didn’t really match up, I wasn’t exactly short of breath, it was that the pain was so intense I was gasping, This sleeve stuff is super complicated!

    SHOULD I DO IT?

If you already have issues with gallstones & diet, it is altogether possible that the surgeon will remove your gallbladder at the same time. It's not uncommon. Yes, surgery is scary, but the rate of complications is very low and the upside is amazing. Ask your doctor for brutal honesty: How long can you expect to live, and with what health issues, as a 69-yr old who's 130 pounds overweight? Then you're comparing apples-to-apples. a PPI is a proton pump inhibitor (like Prilosec)

    SHOULD I DO IT?

Complications are pretty rare, recovery is easier than gall bladder or total knee replacement. I am 63 and had my sleeve done 10 months ago. Pick a good surgeon, do your research. Ask what complication rate he/she has. Ask what size he makes the sleeve. Ask if he does the leak test after surgery, mine did - he has never had a leak, has never had to repair a sleeve he performed, has never lost a patient. Also your general health right now and genetics will impact your recovery to an extent. An EGD as part of preop will give insight into whether you have acid reflux, that is one relatively common problem some people have after the sleeve if they are prone to it prior to surgery. Some physicians put patients on a PPI right away to keep that in check - ask about that. I don't know what other long term effects you are afraid of, be specific.

    SHOULD I DO IT?

Welcome @Nfan49@frankie to the forum. To answer your topic question, I would say yes. I have read many experiences here and while most are successful there are some that are unfortunate and have complications. I don't think I have come across any from my time here that have had any long lasting issues especially lifelong. I consider myself fortunate, I have not had any complications as of yet but I am only just under 2 months out. Congrats on making the step towards VSG. Best of luck to you on your journey!!!

    SHOULD I DO IT?

What lifelong complications are you worried about?
  24. Hello - I have signed up for VSG (vertical sleeve gastrectomy) at Penn Medicine in Phila. I am on medicare so about 90 days to a surgery date. I am scared and hesitant. Do not want life long complications. I am 69. I need to lose 130lbs. Can you share your experiences with VSG?

    August surgery ppl

And it will trust me. I am 8 days out. By my 3rd day home I was trying to speed the process lol but you have to keep reminding yourself to take baby steps. You want proper healing not rush the healing to only have complications down the road. We must remember this is no short cut this is lifestyle change[emoji6] Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
