I remember sitting in Weight Watchers meetings before I had surgery, rolling my eyes (at least to myself) at these barely overweight women moan and complain about how hard it was to lose 10 lbs. And here I was, 200+ lbs overweight. But now I totally get it!! The closer you are to normal weight, the harder it gets to lose even 10 lbs - when pre-surgery I probably could have dropped that in a week or two! But it all comes down to percentages - and how close your normal calorie intake is to your normal calorie expenditure (which at normal weight, is pretty much even). You still have a ways to go, but those percentages have changed - so you'll lose the weight as long as you stick to your plan, but it's going to take longer to lose the same number of pounds that you could have lost when you weighed 300+ lbs. But keep at it - it WILL come off!!

    Stalls are common & a necessary part of your weight loss. It’s when your body stops & assess the changes you’ve made & resets things like digestive hormones, metabolism, etc. based on your changes & new needs. Think of it as your body taking a breath to understand the stress you’ve been putting it through. Once it understands what you now need, your weight loss will start again. Stick to your plan, don’t stress your body more. Your stall will break when your body is ready. They usually last between 1-3 weeks but it can be longer. Can be difficult to compare what others are doing or achieving at a certain point in time. I was barely eating 900 calories at 6 months. Barely touched a carb except what was in vegetables & fruit & barely any sugar (still average less than 10g added sugar a day often only 5g). Most are eating way more than that. With your calorie intake you will still lose weight but I agree, your dietician is your best help.
  3. The dizziness is likely orthostatic hypotension or in simple terms drops in blood pressure with postural changes - getting up after sitting or lying down. You can get it reaching up too. It’s pretty common in the first weeks after surgery & I think aggravated by the low calorie intake but for most it’s temporary. (I had a tendency to it before surgery & now I have it everyday.) Keep your fluids up. Add a little more salt to your diet if possible. Get up slowly, in stages & wait before moving. When I do move I generally try to keep near a chair, table,wall, etc. so I can grab it & ground myself if my vision narrows. Even been known to grab a person too - LOL. Depending upon how much weight you’ve lost so far, your upper body pain could be from your body finding it’s new centre of gravity. Your body used to hold itself in a certain way to compensate for the weight you carried. Now it doesn’t have to & your muscles at relearning how to hold yourself when standing, walking, etc. And yes it’s pretty common & can be experienced at different time while you’re losing.

    I was consuming about the same amount as you at that stage and continue doing the same 17 months out. Stalls will happen. Drink your fluids and exercising helps. Our bodies can be quite tricky in how they manage our food intake. If you are continuing to eat the same foods then try changing what you are eating. Change the proteins for other protein. Change up your snacks. It really is a huge mental game from here on out. Reward yourself for the changes that you have already made. Start a new hobby to keep your brain and hands busy.

  7. I am 4 days post op (sleeve) and had a tiny poop today. We're talking between the size of a regular M&M and a peanut M&M. Still a victory and not surprising, considering all I have had is liquid for 2 days pre-op and 3 days post. By the way, I've always been a regular pooper...hope that's not TMI!!

    Thanks! These are great suggestions! I’m scheduled the week after Thanksgiving. I do have questions if y’all have answers/suggestions. I’m looking to get new water bottles - partly because all my bottles have wide mouth openings (allowing me to chug), partly because I have a mild compulsion to collect all the water bottles. 😁 Do y’all have a slow-release water bottle you suggest? Belly bands - I’ve heard that the hospital won’t give me one before I go home, so I need to get my own. I’ve never owned/used one before. What should I be looking for? What are you putting in your hospital bag? Since we’ll be driving to AL and then home again, I don’t want to have a bunch of junk I won’t really need. My dietitian (who also had this surgery), said I need to bring a notebook to log my water, but that’s about all I’ve been told to bring with me. I plan on bringing my iPad, phone, earbuds… and that’s as far as I’ve gotten. Thank you for your help! M

    Hello everyone. I just discovered this forum a couple of days ago and wanted to chime in. I had my RNY on Oct 9th and am now just over 2 weeks post op and down about 23 pounds already. That liquid diet was rough. I thought i'd share something that helped me get through it. I discovered Fairlife Elite protein shakes. They taste delicious and don't have that chalky taste that Ensure and others have. Best thing about it, they are packed with a whopping 42g of protein per 14oz bottle! It has really helped me hit my protein goals these past weeks. It does have 8g of sugar in it, but I haven't had any problems with dumping syndrome after drinking them. Just thought i'd pass that along. Glad to meet you all.

Having said that- I’m looking for comparison of your numbers vs mine on your daily intake at 4 months out. I’ve been stalled nearly 3 weeks. Just curious to see what others tracking looks like at this time period post operatively. Thanks!!
  11. more food for me! 1/2 a dinner roll with sliced avocado and a butter-fried egg. (i cut up a some of the sandwich first before i remembered to take a pic - oopsies) 364 calories for it all...eyeballing it, i probably ate about 2/3 of it, but i plan on eating the rest later so the cal count stands. p.s. my scale shows a 2.2 lb increase since i started eating relatively normally again yesterday . i do know its not actual fat or anything, and most likely just the food taking up space in my intestines and colon since i had probably nothing in there for the past little while. which you know, as an aside, makes me realize i haven't pooped in a really long time....
  12. Stalls are nearly a guarantee at some point. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage. Your body is just adjusting. I am currently 6 and a half months post op and had a few stalls last about a week or two and then a loss. I was the same weight for 2 weeks and then lost almost 5lbs, then stayed at that weight for 3 weeks and just lost 4lbs. Different things might affect it - could be as simple as sodium intake or not having a BM or your body just trying to adjust for the changes. Not too much you can really do to break a stall. Your body will move when it's ready. I do not specifically track carbs either, but I typically go by net carbs when I check stats. Honestly protein takes top priority and everything else just falls in line. I do track via Baritastic app so I have an idea about fat and carb intake, but I don't focus on those numbers. I am not of the mindset of all or nothing, so nothing is cut out completely, I just look for the healthiest alternatives and don't have them often because they aren't worth the precious space. A typical day lands around 50 or less net carbs. Let us know if the carb count change up helped for you.

    Amazing I started work today wfh as well. My surgery was 5 weeks ago on the 18th. I’m just adjusting to solid it’s so hard for me I think I’m over eating although it’s just few bites I get pain and I need to stop eating.

    This is completely anecdotal, and not actual medical advice. When in doubt, check with your doctor! I haven't had surgery yet, but I've had referred back pain frequently following Diverticulitis or other abdominal infection. Even after the infection has healed, the lower/mid back pain persisted typically for weeks, and sometimes months because I was trying to stabilize the muscles in front by overworking my muscles in the back. It wasn't until I went to Physical Therapy and learned some stretches and exercises that the pain went away. If the inflammation and irritation from the surgery appears to have subsided, it may be worth asking your doctor for a referral to PT for review. I am hesitant to share the exercises since I am not a medical professional, and I don't know which would be a benefit vs which one may irritate the area you had surgery on.

    Crazy to think that surgery was 4 weeks ago. Finally started on solid foods, I return to work next week (thank god I wfh) and I'm nervous but excited to get back into a routine. Also thinking of buying a mini stepper to get my steps in now that my days will be consumed with work.

Do not go by the fitbit, I used to have one and it counts your resting metabolic rate, meaning the 3k calories its showing you burned include your breathing and your bodily functions not your calories burned by exercise. It also will randomly record an exercise or activity if you move your hand too much etc. I was advised by my dietician to increase my carb and protein since I was doing HIIT or strength training 4-5 times a week, so now I try to do 80g of protein with a shake. I do for carbs sweet potato, quinoa, protein bread or wrap, oatmeal (fiber) and cream of wheat. I tend to weight more or less the same when I train hard since there is water retention for muscle repair, so make sure you are drinking above the recommended 64oz to avoid this. It also helps to look at your weight total per month, not by week or weigh in when you are training, and to start taking your measurements to help see how your body is changing.

    I'm 2 weeks out and I think I have pooped a total of 4-5 times since the surgery; the first time was 3 days post-op. A couple of times it was a real struggle!

    Corinneblooms, I'm 2 weeks post-op today and yesterday my back started hurting -- mid back pain, which I've never had before. I went to the gym a couple of days ago and did the TINIEST number of arm/ shoulder/ back exercises with the TINIEST of weights, but one rep of each left me completely worn out and I left! I've been telling myself that I pulled something or did something, but maybe it's just the post-op thing!

    My hunger is back (started around week 8), not as bad as it was before...but so has the head hunger. If I crave certain things I know it is head hunger so I ignore it. Glad you got it done!!
  21. My friend is 3 years out from her surgery, she was still loosing up until a few months ago, she is stable at 120 now. She has a physical job (construction) so she doesn't go to the gym. It did slow down a lot took almost a year to go from 135 to 120.
  22. ok! so for the first time in almost 2 weeks, i woke up hungry! i've been sick for what feels like forever so i guess this means im officially better! so i felt for salty things so i made a weird plate of food reminiscent of my pregnancy days: toasted dinner bun with butter & cheddar, a handful of sour cream and onion chips and a peice of chicken skin cracklin'. 508 calories for all of it, ate all the chips (of course, lol), half the sandwich, and just a bite of the chicken skin cracklin' (it was NOT yummy). i'll probably eat the rest pf the sandwich later, but im def tossing the cracklin'. im looking forward to eating some food again now that i actually want to! and to regain the 7 lbs i lost while being sick (i look a little deathly at the moment, boo)
  23. Hi and thank you so much for the above! I didn't know that about the watches, thank you for this insight. I think I do need to up my protein - I find it difficult to get a lot of it from food as I don't find myself that hungry that often. With regards to sleep, this may be my fault I fear. I tend to get between 4-6 hours a night every day, and I take probiotics maybe once a week in pill format? I need to book an appointment for bloodwork as I haven't had any done since the surgery. Thank you so much for all these suggestions!

    Hi! I had my surgery on the 16th of October Australian time, so the 17th for a lot of the rest of the world! I'm a week out today. I'm adapting well, to the shift in liquid diet for someone who forgets to eat all the time! I still have a lot of pain that feels like GERD/reflux pain, but it's not unmanageable. I see the GP (not my usual, she's on holiday, but I'll be so jazzed to see her and show her my scars!) on Wednesday to get my incisions checked out, but they feel totally fine. I have been a little bummed that I got the illusion from social media that recovery would be a breeze. 😂 How is everyone else doing? Recovery-wise or in anticipation? I can't wait to get to know you all!

    Cutting out sugar

    I was an equal opportunity savoury & sweet eater. I eliminated most sugar in the weeks after surgery when anything with sugar, artificial sweeteners or sugar alternatives tasted extra crazy sweet & was off putting. I haven’t really let it back into my eating. I get my sweet from blueberries every day & the occasional additional serve of fruit. It can be hard to eliminate it & the alternatives completely. It is added to just about everything in firm or another. I know I have about 5g of added sugar (multigrain crackers I eat) a day & some artificial sweetener (yogurt, protein bar & peanut paste) but that’s it. And none of these things taste sweet. I will have dessert at Christmas but that all I have of traditional sweet food. (I did have a small piece of wedding cake earlier this year.) There is some sugar in the rare G&T I have. None of these things make me crave sweet again. I remember during Covid, when the grocery shelves were bare, I could only buy a box of honey instant rolled oats - it was awful, super sweet & I couldn’t eat it. Personally, I’d rather eat something with real sugar than artificial sweetener - that stuff is so bad for you. Good luck.
