  1. For those on the fence about surgery…it’s been a wild and crazy year, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Thank you to everyone here for the motivation and tips. I still have 20-30 lbs to go but man am I proud of my progress. From a 22 to a 10!
  2. *Not a doctor, just personal experience plus asking doctors a lot of questions* Not everything is food related after surgery, especially if you are diligently tracking and seeing a dietitian. The temporary weight loss/gain could be: 1. Dehydration causing water retention (noticed reduced urination? May need electrolyte supplementation) 2. Disruption of normal lymphatic activities because of surgery (excess fluid still in circulation, puffy or swollen anywhere?) 3. Slight level of constipation (still have waste that has not vacated despite amount of trips to the bathroom) 4. Inflammation after surgery (edema of the abdomen because of the laparoscopic procedure-usually immediate and not super common) 4. Return to your maintenance weight after temporary drop (happened to me in the first 2 months- 2 weeks post revision I hit 10-12 lbs lower than my maintenance weight then went back to normal) 5. Hormonal response (menses/menopause - I ALWAYS gain before my cycle ) 6. Incorrect scale/discrepancy of scales used (I always weighed different amounts on doctor’s scales vs mine) 8. A combination of things Please let us know what the surgeon says!

    Question about drink intake.

I'm almost 19 months out and I still take smallish sips over gulping things down like I used to because I've made myself feel sick by drinking too much too fast and it's a terrible feeling! On the bright side the protein drink that used to take me over 2 hours to drink now only takes me about 30-45 minutes to drink now, so it does get better!
  4. I had my surgery on a Monday. I went home on Wednesday. On Friday I had to go to the ER for throwing up blood. A LOT of blood. I had aspiration pneumonia and I had to have another surgery to repair a bleeding ulcer by my esophagus the next morning. I'm 11 months out. I've lost 128 lbs total, but it should be more. I'm the one not to follow. I eat what I want because I don't crave foods any more. I, literally, have a tough time trying to find something to eat. If I get a chicken sandwich out, I eat it without the bun. I've wasted so much money on food, it isn't funny. I might eat 10 different kinds of food and nothing good. I've never eaten fruit and the few vegetables I do eat aren't great for you. But I do eat smaller portions. I'm still losing, so I can't complain. But I bet my dietician will at my next visit! He was so rude on my last visit! He was horrified that I had a piece of pizza. Umm, I didn't say I ate it all at once! I'm demanding to see the other one. My doctor/surgeon, personally, said I could eat what I want, just in small portions. There are times I do throw up a small bit and that's because I don't wait a half hour after eating to drink. I get so dehydrated and I've always drank a huge amount with my meals. Hardest part of this journey ever!

18 months out & still loosing

I made efforts to get into maintenance on purpose after reaching goal (127). I still lost another 10-ish lbs after that anyway during the transition. Im 115 now (+\- 5 lbs), and have basically been here for over 2 years. I did get down to sub-110 for a couple months a year and a half ago, but that didn’t last long and i made no real effort to get back to 115. Also went up as high as 120 a couple times, which also didn’t last long, but it did take a small effort on my part to get back to 115. I’ll be 3 years out in October. p.s. I started off with a BMI of 43 (am BMI 21 today). I’m 5’2”.

18 months out & still loosing

Hi rjan, I enjoyed reading your post. I was sleeved in July 2020, having a SW of 200# at 5’4”, similar to your stats. I am losing weight at a REALLY slow pace at this point. It has taken me 8 mos. to lose the last 10 lbs!! I figure it’s due to 1) a relatively low starting BMI, 2) my age (68), and 3) having the sleeve vs. the bypass. But your post is personally encouraging to me; I’ll keep plugging along!

    Ignorance

Um, yes? But the only thing that bothers me is most of what they eat has wheat in it and I developed a wheat allergy after surgery so when they make a mess and don't clean it up I complain because if I am forced to clean up after them I'll end up with giant rashes due to my allergy. It gets really irritating! I'm actually surprised that I don't feel like cheating most of the time. I mean, yeah, the fact that they buy chocolate and keep it in candy dishes makes me always grab at least two of them a day when they're there (85 calories for those tiny little chocolates) but I fit them into my diet so I don't feel like it's cheating (I'm almost 19 month out so my diet is a lot more lax then someone just starting out).

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

Had mine August 10. Feel pretty good, not a huge fan of the blended diet, but I’m reading on here it gets better. I miss straws, and diet Cokes (even though I’ve not had one in at least a month). I use to watch cooking channels on YouTube a lot but I’m discovering that is a trigger. Will have to find something else to fill my tv time.

    Poll

this was really a really good video - thanks! And yes - I've heard from the get-go that most people gain 10-20 lbs (about 10% of what they lost) after hitting their lowest weight. I swore it would never happen to me, but it did! I've come to terms with it finally. My challenge now is just keeping it there and not letting it go up anymore.

How do they pick your goal weight?

Funny how you call the scale fat shaming....it really is as well as the BMI system itself. I remember when I was a teenager weighing 180 pounds or so. I was by no means overweight, played sports addictively, could run 10 miles no problem, biked 30 miles. But...given today's BMI I would be overweight. The BMI doesn't really work for some people in my view. I have muscular calves and thighs, even with my heavier weight I stay pretty normal in the legs because I walk and bike so much. I do not see me ever getting into the "normal" BMI area given the charts and my body type.

18 months out & still loosing

of course, that's totally up to you. Regain is unfortunately very common in year 2 or 3 - most people put on 10-20 lbs, so you might want to factor that in (I swore I'd never be one of them, but...it happened!). If you don't want to lose any more weight, you can always increase your calories a bit. I just kind of let mine keep going until it naturally stopped - and in retrospect I'm glad I did because I did experience a 20 lb regain.

    Phentermine??

I took phentermine a few times. If you stick with it and your doctor is willing to prescribe it for more than a few months, it might be helpful. TBH, I only lost about 10 lbs on phentermine, I lost 20 lbs using HCG, but it's costly. I guess it depends on how much you need to lose, how active you are, and how disciplined your diet is. I will say phentermine and HCG for me was amazing, but again, HCG is very expensive.
  13. Hi all, Ill be having the sleeve done later this year. Ive had my first appointment with the surgeon i want to go with, it was just with the nurse that time. I did tell her my private health insurance reaches that one year mark in the middle of October and with my sons birthday a few days later I'd be wanting the surgery to be around early November just so I'm not on the pre op diet on his birthday(a kid only turns 10 once!). They gave me my next appointments to be 19th October which is after that one year mark. Its with the dietitian and the surgeon. So im just wondering what the timeline is like with these appointments?? Im based in Sydney Australia. Would i start the pre op the day after that appointment? Are there other appointments i need to attend? Im really hoping for that first week or 2 of november to be the surgery date and just feel like the appointments that were made would push my surgery to late november or even december!

    Plus sized spray tan???

I’m very pale and use self tanners. If you have a partner help out them on after exfoliating correctly, they work great. Bondi Sands light/medium gets me quite dark after two applications and lasts about 10 days. Make sure you put a heavy lotion on knees, elbows, or anywhere you have thicker skin first to prevent them darkening more. Also, use the applicator mitt that comes with this, it does make a difference in the application and doesn’t streak.

    Daily Calories

we didn't get calorie goals, but I've been hanging out on bariatric forums for the last seven or so years. 300 calories seems pretty common the first month when you're doing liquids or purees, but after that, most people are eating around 600-800 calories/day until they get to about 10-12 months out.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Hey we’re twinsies!! I had mine the 4th too and I’ve lost 10 lbs since the surgery and I lost 15 before it! So I’m at 25 now and starting to feel great. It is def had to get enough fluids in. I sip ALL day on water and my clear protein (except when I’m going to try to have a “meal”). I drink my protein shake in the am within the first hour of getting up but I usually can only get down half of it in an hour or longer. I always go back to it later. I make sure I drink atleast 1 clear protein and 1 1/2-2 shakes and WATER all day- that will help with the constipation! Message me if you need any other help! I can help wherever I can!

    Exercise after surgery

I was cleared for weights after 6 weeks. It was probably about 10 weeks post-op that I started with weights - I would have started earlier, but was waiting until I was fully vaccinated before going into a gym (even masked up). I can tell a major difference from the weights - did a bod pod scan when I started it and then again a month ago - so from end of March to mid-July I lost 35 lbs but I gained 6.5 lbs of muscle and lost 17% body fat. Definitely makes a huge difference as my weight loss is slowing to a crawl at this stage - still can see progress when I take measurements.
  18. This thread just gave me so much comfort! I do not have a band, but this pain in the roof of my mouth has been happening for 10 years now. I remember when it started, every time I would eat something for the first time that day the roof of my mouth, in the back near my throat, would start to swell and the pain would be so bad I was unable to eat until it stopped. It was happening so often at first I would be scared to eat in the morning. It would also happen with really cold water, so I thought that any hot or cold substance would cause this, but I could find NO answer as to why this was happening. I don't fast intentionally, maybe I do need more Vitamin B as someone stated. Since then it has calmed down a lot and only happens every so often but it is the strangest thing! I'm so happy I'm not crazy!!

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Had my surgery august 4, so far have lost 10 pounds but it’s hard to get the fluids in and protein. I’m super constipated to not sure if that’s why I can’t drink more.

    ?Dumping syndrome

Like @catwoman7, I don’t think it is traditional dumping. I do wonder if it’s linked to your sugar levels too especially as it occurs in the morning. I have random occurrences of hypoglycaemia & it always occurs sometime in the morning. I experience general weakness in my tummy & bowels, cold sweats, jelly legs, nose runs, etc. Haven’t noticed a racing heart though. I find it passes quickly - like 10 minutes or so. Drinking something (water, tea, etc.) &/or eating a little fruit helps a lot. I often keep a protein bar in my bag when I go out just in case. My last attack was about 3 weeks ago after a 2km bush walk up a mountain. The time before was about 3 months ago when I was standing in a queue for almost an hour on a warm day. I added honey & blueberries to my rolled oats every morning to give me that little sugar hit to help offset the chance of an episode. Definitely check with your medical team though. I should add, I used to experience these hypoglycaemic episodes for years before my surgery usually when exercising. (I skipped a lot of meals to try to control my weight!) Coupled with my tendency to low blood pressure they weren’t fun because my vision would narrow & my ears would become blocked as well. Became a great excuse not to exercise though 😆.
  21. For me, a food scale is very important. I weight everything I eat, not for monitoring purposes, but to be sure I don't eat too much. At about 10 weeks from surgery, I can now eat about 8 ounces at a sitting. I would caution you not to buy too much food before your surgery date. My tastes changed quite a bit after the surgery, and I still have 60 cartons of Carbmaster yogurt and 40 boxes of Wonderslim shakes that don't appeal to me at all. During the puree phase, as Candace said, you'll want something to grind your food up. I found the my bullet blender worked well.
  22. Hi *Paula*! Good luck with Wegovy, I hope it is successful in helping you lose weight. Some thing that I purchased before or since surgery that I found helpful are: 1. Food Scale 2. Mini travel food processor 3. 2 oz disposable containers 4. 4 oz containers 5. Food thermos for soups, purées, soft foods or bringing food 6. Warm travel cup (with strainer) for broths 7. Blender cups for protein shakes 8. Food: based on pre op & post op diets (i.e. protein shakes, sugar-free jello, sugar-free ice pops, broths) 9. Vitamins: based on what I was told I would need post surgery (i.e. Calcium citrate, Multivitamin) 10. Measuring tape 11. Scale 12. Journal /logging/tracking supplies Good luck to you!
  23. I am in the midst of a cross-country move so missed posting about my two year anniversary a couple days ago. I had a VSG in Seattle on 8/12/2019. My starting weight was 286, today I’m 140. Although I lost my excess weight, I gained so much in the process. I am happy, healthy, and active. My only regret is not doing this sooner. I’m off all medication and no longer have sleep apnea. My blood pressure and resting heart rate are that of an athlete. I’ve never felt better in my adult life. I had plastic surgery in January to remove the excess skin and I’m so glad that I did that as part of this process. I still weigh myself daily and track all of my intake. I have a little more wiggle room now for a treat now & then, but in general eat a pretty healthy diet making sure to get in my protein and fluids every day.
  24. Crick

    Excess skin?

Wow what a difference! I still have a few pounds to go to my goal (although I am thinking of lowering another 10 lbs) and I know I want plastic surgery because of all the excess skin. May I ask, how much weight did you lose from the plastic surgery itself? And how did you know you got to the point where you couldn’t get any further without PS?
  25. I wonder why your doctor put you on such a strict pre-op diet especially due to your weight being on the low end. My starting weight was slightly higher than yours and my doctor put me on a 10 day, and those with a higher BMI got 2, 3, 4 weeks, for example. Maybe call him and tell him your weight and see what he/she says.
