  1. Wow.. 2 weeks from today I will be in the hospital getting lapbanded. Its hard to believe that my struggle with weight loss has come to this, but i am ready to tackle it head on. Lets rewind. I am 33 years old and in live in Tallahassee Florida, home to my beloved seminoles. I am happily married and have a 5 year old son named Dylan. Growing up I swam competitively from the time i was six years old through college. Although i had to watch my weight because i swam so much, it wasnt an "issue". My eating habits growing up were atrocious..two orders of chicken fingers and fries was a regular. Once college ended, swimming stopped and the "real world" set in. Sitting at a desk 9 hours a day, eating junk and not exercising lead to a 100lb weight gain. I have decided on Lap Band and will be banded May 9th at Tallahassee Memorial Hopsital by Dr. Eliot Sieloff. In preparing for surgery, I have read blogs and books and searched the internet...man is there a lot of stuff out there...funny how the things that stick are the scary parts.. How do you get past that? Any encouragement would be much appreciated~!!
  2. I was banded Thursday, and had a 1 week pre-op liquid diet prior. I did not do a " last meal" and stuck to the diet . My question is, if I literally not had a solid thing to eat in a week, protein shakes, soups and water. Is it normal to have gained weight ? I weighed in Thursday at 191, and 2 days later I am at 192. Could this just be bloat weight? I'm confused?

    Gas & pain

Hi Alarry21 - I had my done end of may. I have had a little pasta and rice (2-4 bites) and felt no pain from it. Are we to not have it b/c of weight gain or because it will get stuck? Still learning here :-) Thank you.

All sleevers 3 years out or more

@ Game of Sleeves....I am also struggling with a 8 lb weight gain....I reached my goal weight of 135 after one year of being sleeved but now bounce between 139-142 even though I am very active. Am trying the 5:2 diet and hopefully that will work. I also have a FitBit which I am obsessed with and am usually always over 10K a day in my steps. Plus I live in Amsterdam so we walk or bike everywhere. Still, can't seem to get it off. Portions are very good but I do snack on things I shouldn't. I can eat anything but rice. @Lynda.....wow. You and I are so similar! I used to live in San Jose (like you), I started at 223, goal 135 (like you), and was also sleeved in 2011. And although you don't say your age, I am also retired and our birthdays are one day apart! Interesting. So stay tuned.....this week I am recommitting myself. I cannot and will not gain this weight back. My life has been too wonderful since I lost 83lbs.
  5. Has anyone heard of gaining weight when you transition from mushies to solid food? The nutritionist said that there is a possibility of a small weight gain initially....what the heck?!?! Is there any way to avoid that???? Thanks, Katie

    Prego with the band!

I got pregnant 2 weeks after i got my band! I lost about 5 pounds! I was bummed but really happy, it was hard because it was my first (and only baby) that my husband and I wanted so bad, but I just got banded. My surgeons nurse wanted to take out my meager fill, but since i really had no restriction, i refused, and I never had a problem with it. My suggestion is get a really great obstetrition with experience with "high risk", she thought nothing bad of my band, and even suggested it would help me control the inevitable weight gain of pregnancy, she also said i was lucky to have the band, as though it was adjustable. She was a gorgeous little 100 pound thing, but she never judged me, and did a great great job. I only gained 10 pounds in the first 8 months, and 30 the last (i got gestational hypertension, it was all water weight). Nadia came by c-section (little breech brat) an was absolutely perfect. Doctor even took extra care not to disturb my port. My altime high was 324 a day after she was born (swelled up even worse because of c-section) but by my 6 week check up, I was down to 280 with relatively little effort (recovering and all, you know) and now 2 months out, and a good fill, I have lost another 15 pounds. The band was GREAT with my pregnancy, but having an understanding support team with my care was what made it that way. I hope you all the luck, and I strongly suggest you get a good baby doctor, as to be honest, my doc never thought of the band as an inconvienience, but rather, a helpful tool. Good luck.

Two Years Come And Gone, So Fast

Congratulations on getting to where you are. I so get the "confer happiness" thing. Though I feel better having lost a significant amount of weight after VST, the truth is that it started another whole grieving process for me because I realized that unconsciously, I'd connected the weight gain with being diagnosed with MS, and therefore, weight loss is the "cure" for MS. Not. Though generally positive and optimistic about life, I've really struggled the past few weeks with coming to grips with the reality that while MS may have caused the weight gain, being some ideal weight won't cure it. It'll take a little time to adjust my thinking to reflect the truth, and in the meantime, I read your blog entry and it totally resonated. "Weight loss is NOT a fairy tale prince..." -or a fairy godmother with a magic wand. Here's to continued adventures, indeed.
  8. Hi, I am so glad you asked that question. My husband and I went for surgery on 12/30/10 and we noticed a weight loss initially and then a weight gain. As of last night we are back to the weight we were post op in the doctors office. I guess this is the body adjusting to the eating and the trauma it went through for surgery. I would like to know what the nutritionist says because we have considered following weight watchers but if our stomach can't handle the amount of calories they are talking about eating I am not sure what plan to follow to allow for maximum nutrition health.
  9. Your body hoards liquids after trauma. The swelling protects you. But it can lead to temporary weight gain. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Post Weight Loss

People in our society notice weight gain and weight loss. While some of us may find it offensive that we personally get noticed for either gaining or losing, social interaction is likely to be the result of weight loss even if we resent people who never sought us out before the lap band or other assistance in weight loss. The process is going to be slow but people will first notice your face getting thinner because you are consuming(hopefully) less sugar--no soda, juices, etc.--more water and sugar free Crystal Light lemonade. You will be having broth which is high in sodium and Boost which is just high in calories to get you your protein intake--I guarantee you that you will be wondering in six weeks if the band is working because you are able to eat so much--this means it is time to ask the doctor for a fill(2cc) each month for the next five or six and then, the weight will start to drop along with exercise. Since we are nearly in spring, this is a great time to get out and walk and keep walking all spring and summer. After six months of good behaviour , I would be shocked to hear you are not a happier person with more attention than you have dreamed about since you were a kid. Good luck
  11. Congrats to you! The key to managing weight gain is staying alert to it and having a workable plan. Seems like you have this in hand. I'm also 10+ years out and living through the ups and downs. My salvation has been shopping with a tape measure to ensure I never buy a larger size. Vanity also helps. I prefer the best quality I can afford over quantity. When the pounds pile on I cringe in the mirror and deal with it. Looking like all hell is breaking loose and having limited use of my wardrobe is motivating.
  12. I started this journey in January 2019 after a visit to Joslin for a type 2 diabetes check-in. I knew I was very overweight, but had never been recommended for Bariatric surgery! I thought that was for the “other fat people”, you know, 500+ pounds. I was kidding myself. I took the recommendation seriously and went to a meeting for those interested in Bariatric surgery. I decided I wanted to try some lifestyle and food changes myself before I made such a big decision. It was my teenage son telling me he was worried about me not living through my fifties that kept me moving in the right direction. This is probably the time to tell you that I have always enjoyed healthy eating and usually made pretty good choices with food, except for the times that I didn’t🙄. For me, eating is only a part of the extra pounds. I am the main character in a genetic horror film! The film stars me, before major weight gain, starting off with Metabolic syndrome (that includes Hyperlipidemia (crappy HDL), High blood pressure and high blood sugar), Arthritis (2 surgeries, 1 procedure, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy and stenosis- for almost 2 years, unable to work or even stand for more than 15 mins before excruciating pain set in), PCOS (hormones, fertility drugs, hysterectomy), and finally the cherry on top of the extra pounds? Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. So, after I changed some of my behaviors, food choices and had an RFA of L4, L5 and SA, I was ready for help to move into the next phase. This phase began on December 30, 2019 at 204lbs. I am now 1 week away from my VSG surgery and feel ready and excited about feeling better, eating better, moving better and ultimately being here, not only for myself, but my son. Today is the 7th day of my pre-op diet and I weigh 180.2 lbs. I feel proud and know that this surgery will be an amazingly powerful tool to have on my journey.
  13. Wow its good to have someone experiencing similar things to me and I have MS also. I put a post up a few days ago about my band getting tighter and tighter and I am down to 2.85 mls in a 11 ml band and 2 years post op, I did get upto about 5.5 in the band. I cannot eat anything until about 3pm. I have lost a lot more than you but I have been the same weight now for the last 10-12 months (75kg). I am happy at this weight though so thats cool for me. My concern is that I was putting alittle back on and didnt want it to carry on. I have read on an MS website that anothe person was suffering the same fate as we seem to be and after some testing it was discovered that her oesphagus muscles werent working properly to push the food down probably due to MS. Also at the time of my weight gain I switched meds to copaxone and believe that this has played a small part in the weight problem. I also have had a few other issue. Meant to also say that I can eat bread occasionally with Soup. its Pasta, rice and salad stuff that I ahve issues with, anything with a skin, I take the skin off tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber or it sticks, kinda weird. My hubby is brilliant, we make lots of casseroles with both proper meat and mince so that I can eat some too, even curries this way. Or make meat balls which hubby freezes in 2s and pops them into whatever we are cooking with the real meat, you can get mince in all meats which is good. Also find that I eat more veggie dishes too which is great for your health and I make lots of homemade Soups too. Great for getting veggies into the kids too, my daughter loves my chicken soup which I make with chicken mince. Real chicken is my worst meat to eat. Jo

    Insurance Approval ?!

I have NYSHIP as well, why do you think they wont cover you? The NYSHIP group is very big, which is why the coverage is more than most. As long as you went to a surgical group with experience with NYSHIP, you met the prerequisites, I'm not sure why they would deny you. My surgical group said, they never have problems with NYSHIP, including if patients have slight weight gain or loss during the 6 month monitored diet.

Gained weight during nutrional eval. Now what?

never heard of insurance being affeccted by weight gain during the process - but have seen elsewhere on this site where particular surgeons have refused to do the surgery if the patient gained "x" or more pounds during the process - that is rare from what i've seen you should be fine - just get back on the wagon....

    Anti-Anxiety Drugs anyone????

I take Lexapro. I've taken it for several years. I have never had any problems with it. It has not caused any weight gain or slow down at all.

    feeling blue

Hey Girlie- We're surgery sisters having been sleeved on the same day. So, I am literally right where you are. And, I can say that I honestly go through the same thing as you. I can blame mine on a mulitude of issues. Here's a quick run-down: 1. I killed my best friend when I was sleeved. Sounds nuts I know, but I turned to food for all of my emotional comfort. Sometimes, I feel sad that it had to come to this to get healthy. And, it's taking my awhile to make new "friends". 2. I'm surrounded my social eaters. Everywhere I turn my friends, family and co-workers mark life by what we're serving and who's bringing what dish. When you can't eat a lot and focus on Protein and no carbs this can get depressing. 3. I'm realizing that I blamed a lot of issues in my life on my weight and that simple isn't true. I can't blame my weight for things like my marriage hitting the skids anymore so I have to figure out how to fix it now. It's depressing to realize that I was lazy and blamed my weight and it's depressing sometimes to wade through the crap necessary to fix it all. 4. My mind is ahead of my body. I'm ready for the journey to be over and to begin living life in a normal BMI body. Even though I'm losing weight at warp speed it still doesn't seem fast enough some days. On those less rational days when I see that I haven't come as far as I want, it bums me out. I think the best thing we can do is take a deep breath and face our personal challenges head on so we can begin to sort them out and ensure a future without food and weight gain as a crutch. For me, that means journaling, talking with the BFF, an occasional therapist visit and venting on here. It's nice to know this group is here help. Best of luck to you! Amanda
  18. Hi my name is Mary. I am 53 years old and had Gastric Bypass surgery on Sept. 28th at York Hospital in York, Pa. My surgeon is Dr. Garber. I have been struggling with weight gain over the past 5 years. I have tried numerous diets but would only lose 5 or 10lbs and then it would stop. All my weight is sitting in my stomach. I am 5'2" and weighed 230 prior to surgery. I have struggled with sleep apnea, acid reflux, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. I am married to a wonderful and supportive husband for 7 + years now. I have 2 beautiful daughters from my first marriage. My girls are 18 and 21. I work full time with York County as a Aging Care Manager. I am determined to be healthy and follow through with all the post surgery guidelines and hope to find support in this community. So far, I have been in little pain, except when I go from sitting to standing. I am able to keep the clear liguids down and have a strong support system.
  19. Is this normal? I am day 3 post-op and I weigh 4lbs more than on my surgery day.

    PCOS after having surgery

Yes. I did not have very many physical symptoms of PCOS like facial hair, or acanthosis nigrican it was mostly the irregular or absence of my menstrual cycle, infertility, mood swings, elevated hgb a1c therefore I would get hypoglycemic and of course the weight gain and PCOS belly. I am DELIVERT!!!! at 171.8 My belly is about a 28 inches I'd like it to go down to about a 24, 25. Hgb a1c is like 5.2, No mood swings although I do have periods of restlessness and anxiety that come and go. Cycles are coming like clockwork and they are fairly normal and weight loss remains steady. So yes I would say my PCOS symptoms have most certainly improved. I am 6 months post op.

    It's a girl!

Thanks everyone for the congrats and all. I'm am just soo very excited to be having a baby girl. I haven't done any baby shopping since finding out that I'm pregnant, but sure thing the shopping started right after the ultrasound. Christina- sorry I've been AWOL from bootcamp. I just haven't been around LBT much lately. I have seemingly forgot what it means to be a bandster since I voluntarily had some fill removed from my band a few months ago. Now I just don't have any restriction. I've gained a whopping {gulp} 20lbs in the past 4 months. That is very difficult for me to admit. I haven't admitted that to anyone but my husband and my doctor (and may come back later and delete.) Well, regardless of the weight gain, I'm having a healthy and happy pregnancy which is a big change from my previous pregnancy at 300lbs and with high blood pressure. All is good and I can't wait to meet my little girl!

    Considering Dr. Hadar Spivak

Oh, I'll tell you what I also liked.... When I met him the first time, I was asking about the pre op diet and saying that I have no confidence in my ability to stick with ANY diet. He said that he figured if we could stick with it we might not need to be banded....and that the only pre op diet he would ask of me is to not act like it's the Last Supper and try to eat everything in the world as if I never will be able to again. He said a weight GAIN before surgery would not be a good sign. That was all. Now I'm sure if he thought I had a fatty enough liver that it would get in the way of surgery, he would have asked me to do things...or if an insurance company had required it....but I liked it that he understood.

    New in Colorado

It's been a big weight gain year. That's it. I can't stand it anymore! I thought that giving up eating big meals, giving up soda, giving up the various foods, etc. would make this too drastic a step. But I'm past that now. I decided to do it in January, and I just went to see my endocrinologist (no diabetes yet, thankfully), and he's on board. Now I just need to make my appointment with the surgeon (hope he calls back soon) and get the ball rolling. I live in Boulder, CO, and there are hardly any fat people here. I don't feel I can go to school reunions. I worry that I'm embarrassing my son. I hate not being able to do things. My feet hurt. I don't sleep well. I don't want to go up another bra size ever again. I'm going on a diet the day after tomorrow, and I don't want to do it. But I can't wait for the lap band to deal with this. I'm just hoping the lap-band will come along and prevent me from yo-yoing. Otherwise, I don't think dieting is very successful. I might up my workouts from 2x week to 3x, but it's hard when you work all day and don't have much free time. My endocrinologist (who says he's had 5 patients do bariatric surgery in 5 years--although, other Drs in the practice have more) recommended Dr. Frank Chae. He's not very close to Boulder, but I hate to wing it and not use his recommendation. I'm hoping my gastroenterologist OKs it (I have ulcerative colitis). Anyway, I hope everything goes well! Ramona
  25. I learned that we are not supposed to eat before bed at least 2 hours before bed anyway. I decided to not eat after dinner. why should i get in the habit of eating when im not hungry. If i eat after dinner than its head hunger not physical hunger. Night eating contributes to weight gain. after dinner around 8pm I have a glass of Metamucil and Water mixed. I always monitor for constipation that seems to be a big one (no pun intended) among those who had weight loss surgery. To minimal amounts of food and the body cannot excrete correctly. So fruit plenty of water and veggies are the order of the day. The Metamucil helps with satiety. I am over one year out and reached goal but just as the surgeon warned I will gain 15 % back after one year to one and a half years and he was right. I am a comfortable 34 waist up from a 32 waist. So I am monitoring my weight gain very carefully. Basically for one year all I ate was meat and veggies no carbs except dairy carbs. and i was down to 140lbs and a comfortable 32 waist. But I guess that was too ambitious for my body so now i weigh 160lbs my surgery weight was 296lbs. I had my surgery on Nov 11 2013. I had surgery in NYC Manhattan at st lukes roosevelt hospital. So now i added carbs like rice potatoe, mac and cheese or a flavored egg noodles in sauce but small amounts just for flavor really but my meal consists mainly of meat and veggies. sometimes a piece of fruit immediately following the meal as a desert. I eat like a thin person eats. I bought a bicycle for when the weather gets warmer out. and i belong to a gym but havent been going, I really want to be a comfortable 30 waist but my body may not be the set point and it might be unrealistic of me. I see the surgeon every 6 months for 2 years then once a year after that to do routine blood work to check for Vitamin deficiencies.
