Vegetarian, What Is It? And Who?

O.T.R.sleever & MegInNOLA are correct. there's also very strict vegans that are called Fruitarians, who only eat the fruit of plants.. so they'll eat fruit and nuts (because they're the fruit of a tree) & etc. there's also vegans that are "raw" meaning they don't eat any cooked food... they will "warm" food up to 110 degrees or less, otherwise it destroys the digestive enzymes in the food & they consider it "dead" & lacking nutritional value. there are "raw" foodists who eat meat, but they're not vegans/vegetarians. they also drink raw milk and stuff. all kinda strange diets out there, isn't there?

    Soft Foods

I ate refried Beans on my soft food days. I would drink mainly Protein shakes and just the 1-2 oz of refried beans each day. I waited until after the puree foods stage to eat the more actual chewing required foods. My puree stage was only about a week or two. My center suggested yogurt as well, but I didn't like it too much since most of it has a bunch of carbs. Here's a list my doc/nut give to patients. Strained Soups broth and lowfat cream based soups (try stirring jar baby food meats into your Soup to increase protein) Lite-low fat strained yogurt of plain greek yogurt protein fortified strained hot cerials like cream of wheat or cream of rice low fat 1% cottage cheese or ricotta cheese protein fortified cooked and mashed or pureed potatoes and non gas-forming veggies like carrots, squash, green beans, or peas. mashed black, pinto or navy beans lowfat, fat free or vegetarian refried beans or hummus protein fortified sugar free and low fat or fat free pudding **They say to fortify these foods with protein try adding unflavored Protein powder OR add 2 tbsp of non-fat dry milk (the milk adds about 5 g of protein)
  3. I'm having B12 issues myself at the moment and yes, I have the pins and needles tingling sensation in my arms and legs. I'm also pretty dizzy (I've fallen 3 times in the last week) and my heart is pounding. I've even lost my voice due to paralyzed vocal cords. B12 deficiency can cause a lot of different neurological symptoms. In my case, I was only directed to take B12 once a week and for two years that was sufficient. But lately I've been eating less and less meat (not vegan or vegetarian, I just don't have much taste for it). And all of a sudden, I'm B12 deficient! I take it daily now.

    Eating Red Meat

I had to become a vegetarian after surgery. Not because I love animals and I think killing them is wrong. My pouch simply will not tolerate it. Feels like a brick going down my neck then THUD it sits there. My stomach feels like it is between my boobs. I literally have had to take my bra off at dinner because any pressure pushing on it made it a million times worse. I do assure you my hair grew back. Not sure the gold standard in guys but I would rather be bald than getting pulled out of my house via crane lol
  5. crystal - 50 pounds is awesome - you should be so proud! if it helps - just think if you never got surgery you would likely not have lost 50 pounds and may even weigh more today than 6 months ago!!! As far as the 800 calories - nowadays because i have pretty tight restriction - especially in the mornings - it's a 110 calorie EAS AdvantEdge carb control protein shake (17 g protein) - chocolate or vanilla - then for lunch a healthy choice "fake meat" (i'm vegetarian) entre - usually from 270-290 calories - then for dinner - another frozen lien cuisine or healthy choice - usually a pizza which has higher calories - there's a cheese one that's called brick fire margarita pizza or something like that - it's 310 calories - i drink no calories whatsoever during the week -usually do the 0 calories flavored bottled water - SOBE or equivalent - then sometimes i have 100 calorie pack snack - pringles for example or a 100 calorie smart pop single serve popcorn. That's pretty much the routine - on weekends i may replace one of those meals with a meal out - such as a veggie burger w/ cheese then just peel off the buns and eat only the fake meat/cheese. Hope this helps!
  6. Hi, my name's Aris. I am new to the forum and have not yet been banded, my surgery is scheduled for April 13th at Banner gateway in Gilbert, Az by Dr. Albert Chen. I did a lot of research and have been really impressed by this hospital. I'm at the end of the 1st week on the clear liquid diet, and I'm starving. The 1st 3 days were the worst, but getting the b-1 into my diet helped a lot. I'm a vegetarian so most broths are out. I've lost 8 lbs, since monday though, so that is encouraging. Look forward to chatting, Aris

    Suggestions needed..............

Try non-spicey Butter chicken (it's not high in fat like it sounds), it's SOO good. I make it by hand but there are some fair grocery store versions. I'm in CA though so it's easier for me to get indian food. Really, if I were you I would start looking at vegetarian recipes. before the surgery I purchased a number of these books and most of them have vegetarian sections. All of them are high Protein low carb centric obviously. Stay AWAY from the crackers!! lol! They will sabotage you so fast your head will spin. These have some great vegitarian recipies: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=bariatric+cookbooks&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Abariatric+cookbooks My favorite is: https://www.amazon.com/Eating-Well-After-Weight-Surgery/dp/1569244537/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484957153&sr=8-1&keywords=bariatric+cookbooks You can probably find them cheaper elsewhere, this was just a good way of finding all of them for you to see.

  9. Ok, I see. I didn't know you know you would be on mushies. You haven't had ur surgery yet, then? I had no idea that the cruise line would make special dishes for you. I guess it's like the airlines serving Kosher meals or vegetarian meals. Have fun on ur cruise! They're amazing! Which line r u going on? we've done 4 cruises with Carnival and have absolutely no regrets (even tho they've been in the news alot lately!). We luv them!

What do you guys think I'm doing wrong?

Carbs are not the enemy. Processed carbs are. In fact good carbs can fuel your workouts. The bad carbs are highly processed and refined things. Typically the so called white carbs: breads, pastas, etc... Carbs from fruit, veg, legumes are a good thing. My carbs are almost always high and I have been losing steadily.I am vegetarian and most of my Protein is from plant based sources. Also fruit and veg will help you poop. Good bowel movements also aid in weight loss. There is no rush to lose. In fact a slower weight loss gives your skin a bit more time to recover and may decrease the amount of sagging skin you end up with. Your calories might be a bit high. I just started eating 800 -1000 at 10mths out. Prior to that I kept them n the 850 range. I am 51 and post menopausal.

    What to eat....

Jeez, that is brutal--6 weeks?! Each doctor is different but my post-op situation was not that harsh. For mushies I fell in love with vegetarian refried beans, cream of wheat, low-fat/low-sodium cream soups etc. Plus, a lot of people in my support group said they had no problem blending up regular foods like meatballs w/ sauce and chilli (not my thing but some people can handle the look, especially if they're hungry enough!)
  12. Ok I see now. I kinda forgot about the white carbs, even though I threw out all my bread a month before surgery so I wouldn't gain. Personally, I can say that I 100% KNOW I gained most my weight from carbs. This is sad, because I became a vegetarian right before my weight really spiked. And it's a very common misconception that veggies are thin. (Most the ones I know are actually overweight). I loved it, I did it for 2 years, and I did it for almost 100% ethical reasons (It sure wasn't for health cause all I did was eat cheese sticks, Pasta and bread! lol) Since I didn't learn to cook healthy, low carb Protein sources like Beans as a vegetarian, I packed on the weight like crazy and I didn't know why until I looked into banding and realized I was a carb maniac. My favorite food was to order a stuffed crust pizza and justeat the crust and let everyone else have the pizza, lol! I could've been a healthy vegetarian, but since it came down to me eating out almost every meal, it just put another large stepping stone in my already difficult journey to maintaining a healthy weight. Anyway, thanks for reminding me there's white carbs in it. I have a feeling a lot of our surgeon's are pretty fond of a high protein, low carb diet post op and forever after...I don't think I've talked to anyone on here yet who's surgeon has them eating differently. But wouldn't mind hearing from someone if they are reading this and their diet is different? Have a good day guys!

    Protein drink

Most of the whey based that I've dealt with is lactose free, however I've also had hemp, rice, soy, egg, and vegetarian Protein powders. I actually had problems finding the right protein powder due to how much potassium and phosphorus that is added because I have a banana allergy so that was my problem. *laughs* If you find one you like and have an issue with it not dissolving well, I have also found that a stick blender or bullet works well. Or using warm Water instead of cold, though you have to watch how warm your water is because it can cause your protein to clump if it's too hot because it cooks it. Just a few thoughts that may help.
  14. I've been Vegetarian for 6 years now and eat eggs and cheese too. On very rare occasions I will have a little seafood, but it is maybe once or twice a year. There are so many fabulous vegetarian recipes out there and great replacement foods that you will really enjoy! I love love love spicy black bean burgers, Bocca chicken patties, and Morning Star Breakfast sausage. For Protein, I try to get in 60-90 grams each day. I start my day with a scoop of GENEPRO protein powder in my coffee which is 30 so that's a big head start... then here's other vegetarian protein sources: Protein powders/shakes Soy products Mozzarella Cheese Cottage Cheese Eggs Greek Yogurt Milk, Soy Milk, Almond Milk Nuts Beans Lentils Edamame Oats Barley Artichokes Asparagus Broccoli Peas Brussel Sprouts Kale Corn ..and smaller amounts in bell peppers, carrots, green beans, cauliflower, mushrooms, and sweet potatoes. Thank you for considering the lives of our animal friends... not food. ***Also When I first start eating veggie I literally just didn't know what to make, so I thought it might help to know what a typical day looks like... so here's what I ate today: Coffee w/Genepro Breakfast: Hardboiled egg, Morningstar sausage patty (pre-cooked and ate in the car on the way to work) Lunch: Leftover vegetarian chili Snack: Cottage cheese and carrot sticks Snack: Almonds Dinner: I'm making Black bean tostada...(Just like regular ones, except I use black beans cooked with taco seasoning as the base) I also have a sugar free vanilla pudding in the fridge for later
  15. I occasionally do days where I eat vegetarian and still meet my protein goals pretty readily. But does the title of your post mean that cheese is the only dairy you will eat? That might be tough -- cheese doesn't have as much protein per serving as other dairy (except maybe cottage cheese). If you are open to eating yogurt, particularly Greek yogurt and drinking milk, you'll likely do fine. There are some specialized brands of milk like Fair Life and CarbMaster that take out sugar and add in additional whey that work really well for post-wls people. Whey protein powder is another good dairy option to keep your protein high and your carbs low. Good luck!

    Dr.Kuri in mexico?

RestlessMonkey, trust me, i have tried, i was actually vegetarian and dieting for 3 weeks and honestly i know it sounds like i don't have enough willpower but as much as i try to diet, the pounds never come off, which (as you should know, im sure this has happened to you too) discourages me and i end up quitting and not even thinking about it then regretting it later. I really think i need this tool especially hearing all the hype about it.
  17. Thank god for your Super Awesome Nurse! While my WLS hospital experience was fine (I suspect because they were a private hospital), my two previous surgeries were a different story. For some reason, even in 2015, "vegan" seems utterly beyond public hospital kitchens. The worst was my knee surgery stay (5 days), where they just... didn't feed me. And I was only vegetarian at the time, the easy option. If it wasn't for my partner and friends bringing me in food to eat, they'd have just let me starve. With my 2015 gallbladder op, they managed to find a small soy milk for me, then just shrugged. Luckily, that stay was only overnight. So brava getting the right stuff thanks to the nurse AND getting a takeaway stash! But ugh... sorry you're having such a rough time with the cellulitis. That was a rude-ass spider.

    Starting to feel normal!

Ok, so today is the first day that I'm really starting to feel back to normal....very happily. Went for a walk...a short one, got a mani/ pedi, blew dry my hair, shaved the legs...all the grooming rituals that have been put on the back burner for the last 10 days! I'm also down 25 lbs today since I started the pre-op diet. So feeling pretty good about things. Two things that I think are odd about myself right now: One, I find great comfort in watching the food network constantly. I love to cook (and eat) and am growing a veggie garden now so I've been thinking of cool recipes. I have been watching A LOT and seem to be somewhat sated just watching these yummy things being prepared...I don't necessarily even want to EAT them....just a bit strange the whole thing. Number two and even weirder is that I'm having very vivid dreams about food. Have had two (so recurring) dreams about home made peach ice cream (which I'm not sure I've ever even had) and last night I was molesting a Big Mac! I'm a vegetarian and have never been a huge fast food person (although do have very fond food memories of McD's cheeseburgers during my meat eating years!) Anyway, a bit weird, but all in all things are good and I guess we all handle these changes a bit differently.
  19. Well its great to see I'm not "off my nutter" here. Seems you all have had similar experiences with vegetarian or grain/nut-based foods. Everything in moderation, right? I've probably eaten the equivalent of 1-2 pounds of nuts these past 2 weeks, between the almonds, macadamia, walnuts and pine nuts I've consumed in all of my dishes. Tragic! Delicious AND so much fat...! I went for a band adjustment today, and a little 2cc fill has made a HUGE difference. Normally I don't feel the difference until about 10 days later, but this one has delivered a noticeable and profound change in sensation. Eating a salad (raw, but no nut dressings!) tonight I could barely make it through 20 bites. (Chew, chew, chew...) @@Bandista I am so very much like you - require that 'chew factor' in order to get the brain signalling that satiety. I experienced my first "soft stop" tonight during dinner - sighing and pushing my plate away. Nice to have noticed that soft stop, that is a great signal that I definitely want to continue to notice and honour. STOP EATING. So today is a pivotal day for me. Another band fill that has, dare I say it, brought me into the green zone (!finally?!) and an end to my experiment with re-introducing (yummy) raw cuisine. A small haiku to the end of my raw food dalliances: Raw cuisine (delish) I will miss you, my old friend Weight must be lost now.

How do I start eating beans?

I'm not a vegetarian, but have made a pot of black Beans in my slow cooker a few times. I just tarted with dry beans and added some Water and broth (I used beef but you could use vegetable or just water). I put in some dried onion and seasonings (random stuff from my spice drawer - Mexican spice and Moroccan spice I think). Near the end I mixed in some Rotel tomatoes and a can of fire roasted tomatoes so it came out kind of soupy. I added a block of cream cheese, too. I ate beans for days!

    Lactose intolerance

i became lactose intolerant for a while and am a vegetarian to boot! I used lactaid or soymilk with whey... whey does not contain lactose... check the can to make sure it does not contain other milk products... at around 3 months my ability to eat dairy returned.

    Food, And Alot of it!

I was chatting with a woman here on this site, about how she cooks fish, and how I cook my fish. So I got to thinking (thank you sweet lady )... Because there are a lot of people on this site either considering, have already made their decision or have had WLS, most of the conversations are about before, during and right after the surgery. So we talk a lot about their 'Phase Food's and what is making them sick, very important dialog, and should be addressed ASAP. But for those of us who are passed that (thank goodness..lolol), our roles now are very different. Now is when our lives begin. We've lost the weight, we fit in airplane seats, some of us run all the 'K's (not me). Hike, take uber vacations, even wear bikini's!!!!..love that!!!!.were living life and have stop focusing on weight loss and are focused on LIVING, its what we wanted to do in the first place, socialize with confidence, get dates, get married, have children, whatever ... etc. I on the other hand have settle down more quieter. I don't white Water raft, or climb mountains, or run all the "k"s. But how I remain successful is..I've surrounded myself with women who are 8 years or more out and who are nothing but successful, and that's all they want to be. I love that attitude in these people. We are foodies, we travel, and discover foods from here and abroad. With ONE exception..SWEETS, TREATS, & DEAD food are off the table (no pun intended). We don't share that. Just good food we've discovered in our travels and at home that we can share. We're not vegetarians or extremists, but what we ARE is people who've changed our lives, stick to our WLS convictions, and LOVE TO EAT!!!!...I just discoved on utube, a cauliflower pizza crust. Im the last to know apparently??..lol..But as you get this far out, food takes on a different meaning, all the sugar cravings are replaced with a fruit bowl drizzle with pure raw honey, pizza crusts are now made with cauliflower, ect...When you love to eat AND are a WLS person, you have no other choice BUT to come up with delicious & nutritious ways to keep eating the foods you love and maintain your weight. These people have figured that out. The point of writing this is...surround yourself with like minded people. I never cook 'GOOD' food before WLS, I have a family so food was "Belly Filler" meaLS, not a 'Nutritious' meal, I didn't know better, I do now..Thanx for listening and I scour this site for recipes all the time to share with friends & people at work. so thank you soooo much for that.

    Had my first fill today...

WEll, I had my first fill today and it wasn't too traumatic. I was laying down and the PA was finding my port as I "stuck my stomach out". These were my instructions and I realized that I don't think I'd EVER tried to do that! It was an odd feeling...then a little pinch and I was being filled. I have a 9 cc band and I was scheduled for 4 cc's today. As it was going in I felt a LOT of pressure in my chest so the PA removed what she had put in and realized that I actually already HAD 4 cc's in my band (I guess from something called "flushing" during surgery...I'll need to investigate that a bit more)...So I only got 1 cc today and feel a tiny bit more restriction. All in all, I'm a bit worried that I had 4 cc's already and I'm as hungry as I am and can eat "as much" as I am. I've been back and forth to NYC every week for a month for work so have been eating most meals out. I can finish a tuna sandwich and bag of carrots with no trouble and was easily able to eat 2 slices of pizza (a small splurge, and they were small slices). This is FAR less than I would have eaten 2 months ago. I love good pizza and NYC has some great pizza...I used to be able to scarf down 4 slices or so in no time...I nursed my 2 slices with mushroom and spinach and really totally enjoyed every single bite. I definitely appreciate that the band has allowed me to still eat small portions of my favorite foods: sushi, salads, toast with an over easy egg, and now a slice of pizza....It's really forcing me to savor and appreciate my food and not just blindly fill my belly. I'm a vegetarian (well pescatarian, I eat fish) so I had been feeling a tiny bit limited as I need to make sure I get my protein (and I hate tofu)..and the pizza has calmed my cravings. I'm very happy with my progress and I'm hoping that now that I have my first fill I can still enjoy a slice (only one) every now and then!!!!! I should have titled this blog "Pizza" as it really has lifted my spirits as odd as that sounds. I have a new found respect for the food I eat....and I only try to eat "the best"...I went to John's pizza in NYC and I tell you...I think it's one of the BEST!! That's another interesting thing...I will never eat another slice of Domino's again (sorry for those who like it)...I can honestly say that as long as I have my band there will never be another wasted calorie on something I don't love (unless I'm stranded somewhere and my choices are death or Domino's)!!:sneaky:
  24. Thank you for those AWESOME recipes!!! I am going to try those out...I'm vegetarian but the mushroom soup sounds great, I'll just omit the tuna. Yeah, it's rough, and I knew it going in. My husband isn't very sympathetic and just says "Well, you wanted it." Yeah, ok...that doesn't mean I'm not miserable right now...but I know this too, will pass. I can NOT imagine being on a liquid diet for 2 wks prior and then again AFTER. What kind of surgeon does that to their patients???? Torture. Pure torture. I guess some variety will help, too. That smoothie sounds delicious!

    Vomiting postop

@@rnsamantha I was doing that quit a bit, I went practically vegetarian for awhile but drank my protein shakes to keep protein count high. Meat is hit or miss with me too. I think chicken is the worst, and I'm a notorious fast eater, doomed! I'm not really sure what you could do since I'm In the same boat but do vegetarian for awhile....
