    October 2018 Sleevers

I didn’t mean to worry anyone yesterday who has not started pre op diet. Today is day 5 for me and I woke up feeling much better. I never thought I would get through one day so this is a huge accomplishment. I do find it very ironic that I typically cannot stay on a diet, hence me having weight loss surgery, but I can go full liquids. Crazy! I just want to follow the rules so I can lessen the chance of any complications. I did gain a pound but still down 7. I haven’t been pooping much (tmi) but probably why I gained. I shouldn’t be weighing myself everyday I know but if I have to survive this I will do it lolllll. Good luck to everyone and I answered my own question. It does get easier?

Extreme Stress but Surgery Date Set

Extreme condolences for your losses and current struggles. Prayers for your family. Stay strong and focused. Stretch, sleep, cry, vent, breath. Stress wrecks the body and mind. Don't let it win. Your husband sounds like he wants you as healthy and happy as possible. He sounds very wise. I don't want to come off as a spokes person for WLS but the sudden and drastic improvements (complication free journey) can be life altering. It will take work, patience and time but hands down I would do it again 100% no matter the external challenges I maybe facing, because this is one decision/path you can control (ofcourse to an extent) Let us know how you are doing as your surgery approaches.

    1week post op

Hey, A week ago I got a gastric sleeve like the first 4 days I was in a lot of pain. I have a low tolerance for pain, the gas pain was sharp and made me miserable and the surgical incision spots were sore. When I look at my stomach I think it looks more ugly then it looked before. I feel hideous and feel like I’m not gonna get results because all I’m doing is drinking water and sip on a protein shake and take my vitamins. I’ve already been tempted to eat unhealthy foods. The other day I chewed some chicken but I spit it out because I’m not trying to cause myself complications. I guess I’m just venting I also feel weird in the sense that I’m waiting to see myself skinny. Is it normal to feel like? How did y’all feel your first few weeks. Did you have doubts were u happy were u tempted to eat crap? Did u eat it how did you feel?

    Pre -op and Nervous

Complications are very rare and I'm sure you wouldn't use a surgeon without a great reputation. I'd be happy to pray for a successful surgery and for your peace of mind if you'd like me to. Personally, I knew that the odds of my death were much higher every time I got behind the wheel of a car. I take my life in my hands every day and don't get to sleep through it! Honestly, it will be over before you know it!
  5. Also...I would be wary about a surgeon who called his complications "flukes". That sounds very dismissive and not very caring to me IMHO. Sent from my SM-G950F using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. I had mine 5 days ago!!! I did a lot of research and asked my surgeon a lot of questions. The complication rate is not as high as you would think. I know a few people that saw the same surgeon as me and they haven't had any trouble. I'm going well so far. The pain and nausea I'm having is not too bad now with pain relief. If I had heard from my surgeon's patient's that more than one had complications i would have run for the hills!!! Sent from my SM-G950F using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. I got a second opinion for sleeve to bypass revision...i went with the 2nd opinion. Sounds like a good idea to may be not have this surgeon. Complications should be low so 5 people is a lot Sent from my SM-G950F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Navigating the site

Bypass complications Preparing for surgery Revisions from band to bypass I would like to be able to find all the threads relating to a topic in one place
  9. Are there any tips for navigating the site. I haven't used it since it was LBT and that seemed to be a lot easier to use. It was divided into pre , post, eating, complications etc This site doesnt seem to have that sort of functionality , it only seems to be divided into the type of surgery ( unless I'm missing something) I dont want to have to wade through 100+ pages to be able to find 1 post on the topic I'm looking for.
  10. Hi! I lost almost 140 lbs w/my sleeve but have slowly regained 35 lbs over the last 3 years. I'm scared I'll be back to where I started at this rate. Since my original bariatric surgeon passed away, I went to see another WLS doc and he performed an endoscopy. Said I have a hernia, reflux, kink in my sleeve and stretched out sleeve, so that is why I'm gaining weight. He recommends a revision from sleeve to bypass. He also said the surgeon who did my sleeve had a different (inferior) technique for doing sleeves, thus this Dr. does a lot of revisions for my original surgeon. Insurance has approved but I'll have out of network coverage. Here is my concern: In the waiting room of this surgeon's office, it just so happened there were 5 revision patients, and they told horror stories of complications, and ending up in severe pain, kinked intestines, needing additional emergency surgeries, not being able to eat, pain months after, regret, etc. I'll be honest....it scares me!! I asked this surgeon about those patients, and the doc said it was flukes, that there are a few people who have complications, but they may not be following directions, or maybe they had numerous WLS before, etc. I'm scared if I do go forward with my planned revision, I could end up in worse health and have regrets, but I am scared if I don't, I'll end up where I started 5 years ago....very unhappy!! Would love to hear from a good number of folks who have had sleeve to bypass revisions, and what your experience was? Thank you in advance!!

    September bypass buddies??

Surgery was Monday. It went well,no surprises or complications, and my liver was fine. I stayed two nights at the hospital because my first day post op (yesterday) was painful and full of nausea. I couldn’t even touch my full liquid lunch or dinner yesterday. I feel better today (especially since I’m home). My complaint is that my belly feels gassy but I barely pass gas. Very uncomfortable. They gave me an abdominal binder this morning for support and it did help me walk around the floor better. I ate a sf pudding cup earlier instead of measuring out one ounce portions and OMG I was so full 😭. Lesson learned: SLOW DOWN AND MEASURE.
  12. I had lap band in 2005. Had it removed in 2009. Had sleeve surgery this year, April 10th. My surgeon said that the scar tissue from the lap band was pretty bad and it took him almost twice as long to do my surgery than it would have taken without the lap band history. So, my recovery didn't start out very smooth. I had a quite a bit of pain and found it very difficult to walk or sip during my little time in the hospital. That being said, I had my surgery 2 states over and had to fly to/from the surgery center. I had a friend with me, but when we returned home, it was dark and she has night blindness. So, 2 days after surgery, I was driving home from the airport. I was uncomfortable, but perfectly capable. *I was NOT on narcotic pain medications. I would say the biggest risk factor to driving soon post operatively would be whether or not you are on pain medications that affect your cognitive abilities. If so, you shouldn't be driving anyhow, regardless of your recent surgery. Secondly, anytime you are on the road there is risk involved. If you were involved in a motor vehicle accident with fresh surgical incisions, that may complicate things more. Certainly something to consider.

Any one go home the same day ?

I’m in Australia; normal stay for a sleeve is 3-5 nights. I stayed 3 nights which was perfect. I needed IV anti-emetics for post-op nausea which prevented me from vomiting. I had IV fluids and antibiotics for 36 hours. You’re supposed to be nil by mouth the first day. That’s a long time to go without fluids including pre-op fasting! No way could I have gone home the same day. I’m amazed that people do this. Does it cost extra for you folks in the USA?? I was out of it from the anaesthetic and analgesia too.... no complications. If you can spend even one night in hospital I would suggest it. Good luck

    Checking in

Hello everyone. It has been a while since I have been on here. Just wanted to check in an let everyone know what's going on. First things first, we found out we are going to be first time grandparents. We are very excited. Next, I blew the engine on my brand new 2018 Jeep Compass. I am fighting with FCA about trying to get rid of it. My dad was sent home with Hospice (he lives in Texas and I live in Michigan). Then on Friday (7 Sept 2018) one of the guys I work with rushed me to the emergency room. Turns out I had a blocked bowel. Scar tissue had formed and blocked the bowel. Luckily they caught it in time and the bowel did not die. They had to fillet me like a fish and I have about 30 staples holding my guts in. I am very sore and on a liquid diet. I guess it is a known complication but not a common one. Who would have thought that I would have a complication almost 2 years after my RNY. Very happy to be on the mend.
  15. I only felt restricted for about a month. Now I do not have that feeling anymore. I was sleeved on 3/16/18. I have had absolutely no complications and at times wonder if I really had the surgery as nothing bothers my sleeve and I mean nothing.
  16. Yeah, my jobs are physically demanding as well. I feel like he's pressuring me to go back. I guess I'll have to try to put my foot down. I have my first follow up today, even though I just got out of the hospital for the lung issue yesterday. Thanks so much. I would most certainly push, just be very direct with your "request" "I don't feel comfortable going back to work so soon due to the physical demands of my job, I want to be sure I'm fully healed before I put my body back into that situation, so to avoid any complications or injury, I would like you to write me a return to work letter for (whatever date you want to return)"
  17. This is really a personal decision. Everyone makes their choice for their reasons. The success rate of both surgeries these days are very similar. Have you discussed your concerns about either surgery with your surgeon? For me, I chose the sleeve because it's least invasive in terms of change to my anatomy. I personally believe that I am strong enough to maintain the healthy lifestyle required with the new tool / gift I've been given. I am 4-weeks post op and so far I've had zero regrets and few to no complications. I'd review every piece a literature available to you regarding the surgeries and ask the questions you are not sure of. I researched my options 6 months prior to seeing a Bariatric group to discuss surgery and even when I had my first appointment I was on the fence as to whether or not I wanted surgery or continue with medically supervised weightloss. But I've always known for me, the sleeve was going to be my choice.

Any one go home the same day ?

I wouldn’t push for this. Having all your meds by IV is so important. This is major surgery remember that. You could have complications and need to be monitored. Just my thoughts 🤗
  19. Hi, this is my 1st post. I’m looking into RNY in Mexico. I was approved in the states only to find out that our insurance didn’t cover Bariatrics at the end of my consult. Most posts I find are about VSG. I’m looking for input of those of you who had RNY in Mexico and how after care has been. I think one of my biggest fears is if I have any complications and need to be seen. I’m located near San Antonio,Texas. So if anyone is near that area it’s even better. Thank you!

    Lessons learned

From watching YouTube videos I thought I wouldn’t be in so much pain afterwards. I was wrong and I wish SOMEONE would have told me. I was so upset and wish I was more mentally prepared for that part. I thought I was having complications because of the pain but my surgeon came up and told me it was perfectly normal. Also, I “sharted” on myself day one of being home. Again, something no one warned me about. So be careful when you pass gas post op. It will save you some embarrassment. GOOD LUCK!!! It starts out tough but then it’s gets easy!

    Out-of-the-blue disaster

I’m six months out and was going pretty well, weight loss has slowed but not stopped, I’d mostly put it down to some stressful work situations and losing control of some food choices due to a lot of travel. Still, was looking forward to the fall to get back on track. Then, disaster. One of my best friends experienced a freakish, frequently fatal complication during the birth of her first child and is in a coma. She has been for weeks. We’re now well beyond the time she was expected to come round and it’s becoming increasingly clear that intense damage occurred. She lives in an area far from family and friends, I’m one of the closest but still hours away. I’ve been taking time off work to go care for her as her husband deals with the totally separate medical emergency that is their newborn. I feel like my brain’s been puréed, I can’t focus on a damn thing and am in a constant hypervigilant state. I don’t sleep much anymore and I’m a zombie at work. It’s taken me three weeks to notice that I’ve totally stalled out weight-wise (I suppose I noticed day-to-day while weighing myself, but then didn’t chain the days together). And I know why: I’m grazing, I’m not prioritizing protein, I’m not drinking enough water. Worse, some of the habits I’ve kept at bay for almost half a year have come roaring back, including stopping by the local CVS to pick up junk food. I ate half a packet of Oreo’s, for pete’s sake. I don’t even like Oreos, at all, never have. I’m going through the house this morning to throw out any junk food I’ve mindlessly bought, but I can also feel that the need to have quite literally anything make me feel slightly better is translating to the old emotional and current chemical boost junk food loans you. I know I’m going to have to just be more aware of all of this, now I’ve spotted it. But my entire life feels like a bomb went off at its center, and given how hard I’m finding it to focus on ANYTHING, I’m going to have a hard time being mentally guarded against lifetime habits creeping in again. This sucks. THIS SUCKS.

    4 months post op--disney??

At four weeks out, barring weird complications or anything, my surgeon clears folks to lift weights. I bet they'll clear you for the coasters, @MargoCL! And @Ivy Joel, they wouldn't have invited you along if they didn't think of you as part of the family already. You are definitely focusing a lot more on this "not a blood relative" thing than they are. As an anxious person, myself, I know it does zero good to be told "don't worry so much," so I won't do that to you. But just know, they want you there! So even if you do have to take things a little slow, or whatever--four months out, I kind of doubt you'll have to, but even if you do--that's OK. Families make allowances for each other. (Or, well, they should.) ❤️
  23. Had my RYGB in the summer of 2000. Over the years, I have lived quite happily w/my altered anatomy. However, starting this past summer (6.18) all of that changed...... During my 1st pregnancy, in 2011, I experieneced some serious tummy troubles; everything from aching to dry heaving, & bowel troubles. Had an upper Endoscopy where my Gastro Doc located a llttle ulcer in my little tummy. "No prob," I thought. " I'll just add Prilosec to my daily medication list!" So, for roughly the next 7 years, any tummy troubles, both above & below the belt, I attributted to my ulcer acting up. Wow, was I WRONG!! This June, I was rushed to the ER with THE WORST ab pain I had ever experienced - I was peeing a dark orange/brown & pooping a white-ish color!! (Looking back, I had felt like **** for a few months, but since that had become my norm, didn't seek any help for it.) After many agonizing tests, I was diagnosed septic due to a bile duct obstruction and excessive CBD dialation. Was transferred to Cleveland Clinic for addition tests & medical intervention. Due to the fact that I still have my gallbladder, most Dr's/Surgeons assumed I had gall stones - a kind of "go-to" for GB patients. But oh how wrong they were...... It has taken almost 3 months, 100+ Dr's, numerous hospital stays, & every cancer screen/imaging available for them to discover that my gallbladder is just fine. My bile isn't flowing on it's own due to a problem w/my Sphincter of Is Oddi. I'm now scheduled for a sphincectomy The reason I'm sharing is that w/our altered GB anatomy, standard abdominal & endoscopic tests & procedures are almost impossible to be conducted. Had my anatomy been unaltered, they could've located & treated my issue back during my 1st hospital stay. Wud've saved SO much time, energy & $$$$!! This problem has really opened my eyes to the true long term effects of not only our surgery, but the complications it causes in diagnosing & treating any other medical issues that we may have for the rest of our lives!! Every procedure/surgery I've had & will have, has been adapted to fit my anatomy's needs. Not to mention, finding a Dr/Surgeon who knows how to perform these extra risky procedures. If u've had, or have anything similar, plz lemme know. Very curious to see how ur situation panned out. Thanx!😄

    4 months post op--disney??

I was. Big surgery - a bypass, and via open surgery (cut from rib center to belly button) not keyhole. After four months this would have been a breeze, so barring complications it should be for you too. Both post-surgery irritations, but also your new eating style will be pretty settled by then... and you’ll deserve a vacation! And you’ll be thinner, healthier!!

    4 months post op--disney??

My surgery was perfection, not a single complication, i lost about 45-50lbs so now I had increased energy, always took vitamins, exceed my hydration goals, met my protein goals.. I planned my vacation before I thought about surgery, so at 4 months post op I met with my NUT to discuss the plan for my vacation eating, etc. Because I knew there would be things off plan I wanted. They worked with me. It was great, no problems whatsoever. Keep your team in the loop, focus on great healing prior and you should be ok.
