People with insulin problems as you put it, are usually caught early on due to symptoms and diagnostic testing, I was trying to be helpful and want making an assumption. I too have a glandular problem, However, that accompanied with an eating disorder helped with weight gain. Good luck to you!
  2. Hi there I have tried many, many, many weight loss methods since I was 19 years old (the first time I joined Weight Watchers, but not the first time I was 'fat'). That's 30 years of the weight loss insanity And while I had success on many of them (temporary success, obviously), the one thing that was never addressed was "Why am I overweight in the first place?" Weight loss programs focus on losing weight. Some of them have a 'keeping it off' element, but not many do. So, the focus is on reacting to the symptoms rather than causes (starting where it started with the weight gain). Why did the weight gain start? Is it ALL because of lack of willpower or self-control? Is it because of genetics? Is it emotions? Hormones? Why are some people predisposed to putting weight on when others face similar situations and are not so predisposed? Why is weight loss so hard to maintain? I doubt very much that I'm overweight because I'm lazy, don't try hard enough, can't control myself, etc. Which are easy judgements from people who have never had a weight issue. I look forward to your posts.
  3. Bandsters: Many thanks for chiming in. I know my question is strange because most people (who get the lapband) you wouldn't consider them an excertise guru. But I love working out...alot actually! If I had my way....I would be there 3 hours a day. Used to lift alot of weights...but I mostly concentrate on cardio for the last 4 years. Maybe...that has contributed to my weight gain from 2005 - 2012 (212lbs to 290lbs currently)...outside of moving from a warm weather climate to cold and alot more stressed out (eating more comfort foods, and noticed I have drank in moderation more than before)".. Regardless, I"m curious as how my body will respond with the band....while I maintain my regular work out schedule. I absolutely love working out, so I'm trying to anticipate how my body will respond with little food and lots of excercise. Anybody else fit this category as maybe the could shed some light on this? P.S. I know its a tough question (as every person's body is different) but I'm sure other bandsters fit this category and wanted to pick their brain as to how their body responded. Or...maybe you know someone who fits this category....and you observed how they responded. Any "general trends/observations" that you noticed would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Bandsters...YOU ROCK ! Thoughts/Opinions?

    stall

I have been losing weight fairly consistently and this week am stalling. I'm not overly concerned as I think I may know the reason. It has coincided with a terrible stomach bug I have, when I have not been able to keep anything but water and some fluids down, so I suspect the small amount of calories going into my body may have shocked it into holding on to the water. I so want to be able to eat my calories and it's just not staying down; I feel incredibly sick and I didn't have any trouble beforehand. My periods have stopped since about 7 months ago and this is because of drastic weight gain. I was overweight and put more on in a quick and short space of time. I'm now actually starting to get sign of pms, like cramping, swelling in stomach and in my fingers and my hormones are all over the place. Yesterday I cried during an advert. It was pretty sad though but I'm crying at everything. Anyone who looks sad and I'm crying for them. I'm turning all mushy and emotional. I guess I've always been an emotional person but I'm feel like I'm feeling people's pain more now...

    MIL opens mouth

I just had my WLS Tuesday. Today was Friday. I stopped by my in-laws house to drop some things off and talked a little bit with my mother-in-law. While there, she asked me how much I had lost. I told her I had gained weight (5 pounds) because of the IV Fluid, but I lost it all in a day and that I was the weight I was at when I went into surgery. This is 3 days after surgery. Later, my husband talked to his parents. His mom commented on how I didn't look like I lost any weight yet. My husband laughed about it. He couldn't believe his mom's unrealistic expectations. He told her it wasn't an overnight fix. (Yay hubby!) I know my mil is dealing with her own issues. I've heard through my father-in-law that she is now considering weight loss surgery of her own. She has an investment in how I do, and I think she is kind of hoping I don't do well, so she has a reason not to have WLS. I'm not concerned about her since I know what I have to do, but it is amazing the little digs people will get in even when they know better. I think what ticks me off most is that I had explained to her that very day that I had some weight gain because of IV fluids, but she was still being unrealistic and critical. I just think most of that was posturing for her husband who I think has been encouraging her a little too much for her liking to look into WLS.
  6. New year ... new start. Im looking for help/guidance. Had surgery in Nov 2012. I weighed 289 day of surgery. Got down to as far as 214 lb and then just hit a plateau. Which I was fine with. I did more than I ever did. Loved to exercise to relieve the stress of eating etc... Then I was injured couldn't exercise as much. Starting getting depressed and making bad eating choices again. Now Im up to 235 lb. I started back with kick boxing but started getting dizzy and very out of breathe. I figured I had been out of the game for awhile and thought I was just out of shape. I went to get a full work up and physical. Discovered that my B12, Iron and white blood counts were very low and therefore making me extremely anemic. Had to get a few iron infusions done. Dr told me I could resume workouts until levels were up. Levels are still where they need to be... taking vitamin D and b12 supplements now. Dr told me my metabolism is very low and therefore not burning off calories like it normally would. Im feeling at a loss. I want to be back at where I was. Finding it hard to get motivated. Anyone else have a similar experience???

    2 years post op

Im a cheese-lover too. I did stay away from it during weight loss phase, though. In terms of cravings, I always want salty things, even during weight loss phase (which is weird because I did drink a crap ton of water during that time...). I know I probably add way to much salt to food (then AND now). I also go through periods of wanting dessert. It usually comes after having some. I've read, and experienced, that once you eat something sweet, you will crave even more sweet stuff. So when I think I'm going too far on the dessert front, I'll cut it out for a few days and the cravings will go away. Rinse and repeat, lol. I did gain 6 lbs from around the the end of Feb to around the beginning of April (which sort of coincided with a hiatus I took from the BP forums, and corona-quarantine...coincidence?) And according to MyFitnessPal, I was averaging around 2500 cals a day and practically ZERO EXERCISE. So yeah, weight gain. And this wasn't a fluctuation. I held onto those 6lbs for a couple weeks... I have a personal upper weight limit I set for myself, and those 6lbs took me ONE POUND over that. I long ago made a deal with myself that if I go over my upper limit, I have to bring myself down to my lower limit. I realize this may sound extreme, but a deal is a deal. Sooooo...I consciously reduced my calorie intake and went back to running daily and doing some strength training and am happy to report that as of last week I got back down to my lower limit. I figure this is my life now. Will eventually have a period of gain, and if that gain takes me over what I am comfortable with, it will be followed by a period of effort to reduce that gain. I mean, I do love cheese, lol. (I realize that my comfortable weight range may change in the future, but this works, and is maintainable, for me, for now) @Meadow76: have you considered doing some sort of alternate day fasting? Lots of folks on here have seen success with it. Simply put, you fast (or limit your cals to 500 or so) a couple days a week and loosen the reigns the rest of the week. They could be like cheese days, and no-cheese days, lol. This way, it may be easier to lay off the snacks today because you know you can have some tomorrow... P.S. Sorry this was so long!

    Help..

First off, WOW!!! 30 pounds is so awesome!!! As far as your weight gain... Your body is in starvation mode. Your switch in higher calorie foods has caused your body to hold on to every calorie BECAUSE it's in starvation mode. Your body is adjusting. If you're following your doctors orders, your are doing nothing wrong. It is normal to see fluctuations from time to time, including stalls. You're fine. Keep doing what you're doing. dde09
  9. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. That would be enough to make anybody depressed, tired. But if you feel like that isn't the reason, keep looking. Like Cindy, I'm not a doctor. But I've spent about 6 years going through perimenopause and menopause and I'm here to tell you, it does a number on you in so many ways. Some of the symptoms, hot flashes, tired, sleepless nights, weight gain, moody, hair loss, vision changes, loss of interest in intimacy and I could keep going. It's so wonderful being a woman. We are complicated and wonderful creatures. It might not hurt to check with your gynecologist. Maybe ask about hormone replacement therapy.
  10. My roommate and Best friend whom I have known for twenty years is 120 lbs, Atleast Twenty of the pounds she has gained in the year and a half she has lived with me. We both are a little quirky and she says that people get married and get bigger because she is comfortable, she was with her last boyfriend for seven years but didn't get comfortable apparently until she moved in with me. She's my hetero lifemate. She tells people she is 5'0. Shes not, she is 4'11, but I will give her an inch if it makes her feel better. When she was younger her mother used to tell her how she was "98 lbs when I got married, not 99, not 100, 98" She, my BFF, LOVES biscuits, and Cookies, and bread. And the skinny thing can eat too. We laughed about it all the time, because people would see her, then how much was on her plate and freak out. Her mother would follow her around and tell her it was gonna catch up to her. Her mom made these bomb ass biscuits, which my BFF LOVED. If she could she would have eaten 100 biscuits a day, but her mother would put her on Biscuit Restriction. She could only have two biscuits at Breakfast unless she ate a peice of sausage and then she could have three (My BFF was a self proclaimed vegetarian at the time which drove her mother crazy) She would also put her on other restrictions and talk about the way her tummy poked out after she ate and how she needed to be careful. So if my BFF snuck another biscuit she would go to her room and exercise and exercise, then get up and go to the scale and go exercise some more. Then she started to do it everytime she ate because her mom would make fun of fat people. And talk about "fatties". At the time she was probabley close to 85 lbs at 16/17 years old. She had no boobs, and she wanted them so bad, but she didn't have the fat to make them. People thought she was a little kid. Finally she threw away the scale. Talked about her compulsive exercising, told her mom to stop making it so obvious that "she didn't want a fattie", and always ate a third biscuit whether she ate the sausage or not. Now we work out togethor, but she stays off the scale except once a month, and if she has the extra biscuit then we just laugh togethor. She doesn't own a scale and I threw mine away so the only time we can weigh is at the gym. I'm so proud of her. So being skinny, doesn't solve all your problems, which is something that I will have to work on remembering. You can still feel fat, or you can still hate your body, or you can still be a little bit insane like my dear BFF. Oh and since her weight gain she grew some boobs. They are a pretty solid A. Doesn't sound like much, but she's tiny. Life is good for both of us I guess. I'm losing the Big C cup and shes getting closer to her goal of a B cup and we are both happy about that. Go figure.

    Eating & Drinking question

You may very well be not losing because of drinking with meals. If you don't wait afterwards the food is pushed through faster making you hungry sooner which leads to eating more often which = weight gain eventually! Stick the plan
  12. I got pregnant 3 weeks after surgery, I was devastated, I was 41 married and had 2 kids, I never planned anymore, I just wanted to diet not have kids kinda thing, I considered all options. 7 weeks later I miscarried and it actually upset me a lot but I got on with the diet and put it behind me. I had gone 8 years using the withdrawal method and never got pregnant. Two months after that, low and behold I was pregnant again, unplanned. This time it was a shock, but after losing the last one, it put babies v diet in perspective. I continued dieting, lost 75lbs (45lbs whilst pregnant) and had my band de-filled by 2.0ml at 20 weeks. My pregnancy was great, loved it! I lost 28lbs within 2 weeks of giving birth .. I guess that was baby weight gained and with bump and baby weight gone I was a new person - so much smaller than I thought I would be. My son Nixon is now 8 months, he is a joy and the best thing that has ever happened to us. I have maintained my weight whilst breastfeeding but had my band filled last week so I can continue my lapband journey. Lots of people get pregnant whilst banded ... the weightloss changes your fertility for one thing. Dont think its the end of your diet, just keep eating healthily, put your baby first, be sensible, listen to your Doctor. I was a plus sized Mum to all 3 of my kids, dont be embarrassed, we have the right to have kids like everyone else and we dont all have complications, there will always be bigger moms than you, the nurses have seen it all. I started the journey at 325lbs, now about 260, long journey still ahead ... and a cute baby boy to accompany me with it. Be prepared for when life throws you a curve ball! Good luck x

    What are symptoms of erosion?

http://arturorodriguezmd.com/lapband-erosion-clinical-radiological-and-endoscopic-correlation The above link has great info on erosions. Main symptoms are loss of restriction and weight gain. Also you can get port-site infection.
  15. Hi everyone! I havent been super involved in this community yet, but was hoping to start. Thought it would be best to share my story. I apologize in advance if there seem to be details left out, just a long, long story. I got the sleeve in 2009, when I was still in high school. I was on the lower end for the band, at about 5'8 & 220 lbs. I had tried every diet imaginable (weight loss camps, etc). Unfortunately, the band never worked for me. From the first time I tried to get it adjusted, the nurses could not get the needle into the port (I actually did not have a great deal of abdominal fat, so they didnt even try to do it under fluoro the first time). They claimed that the band port was "malrotated," but it would cause no issues. I never, ever, felt "right" with the band. I never felt appropriately restricted, and in the same day I would be able to eat a sandwich then later not hold down food. I had horrible pelvic pain that no one could diagnose, went from doctor to doctor. After years of failure (and a ton of weight gain), I was so sick of the band. I thought that it might have something to do with my pelvic pain, but two different band docs denied it and gynecologists couldnt find any explanation. In 2012 (ish), I started having intermittent sharp pain, that felt like it moved from throughout my pelvis. It hurt so badly I could barely walk during those episodes. Again, no doctor could diagnose it. In December 2013, I went to the ER with a ton of pelvic pain that I thought was appendicitis. When I went for a CT the pain suddenly moved to my left side, so they thought it was a kidney stone. However, the CT came back negative for everything, and I was sent home yet again with no answer. Over the next few months I went to many docs, from gynecologists to urologists to urogynocologists. At last, I went to Dr. Iannace in NJ in June 2014 (took me almost 6 months to get two other bariatric surgeons to send my records over!). He pulled up my records from the ER that night, and found that the tubing of the band was broken!!! There is actually a part of the band half way between the port and the band itself that comes apart, and the broken tube was lying in my left pelvis. The radiologist read it on the report, but no doctor ever called/told me. I was incredibly upset/pissed but also relieved that I finally had an answer. For years doctors told me that I was "cheating the band," and that I was lying about being able to eat bread but threw up liquid. With the broken band, changes in pressure in my abdomen could explain the differences in restriction. Dr. Iannace took the band out in august 2013, and said that i had no adhesions (yay!), so that the sleeve is totally safe. I am getting sleeved tomorrow, and I cant wait. I am super excited, but nervous for the surgery. I really hope the recovery will be easier than the band removal (getting the port out really hurt for me!). I hope to share more about my journey in the future

    Introduction

Hi. I was sleeved on July 18,2011. My highest weight was 257 and I was at 240 on day of surgery. I've lost over 110 pounds. My lowest weight was 141 about 7 months ago when I had to have a complete hysterectomy. I was able to maintain my weight of 150 for almost a year--that is until a few weeks ago when I started gaining weight and I am now at 157-158. I am sad. And worried. I have indulged in a few things a little too much but not much more than I had even a few months ago although I do feel like I can eat a bit more than just a few months ago. I am here for support and advice. I exercise although not regularly. I only walk and try running. I am a school librarian and I am off on vacation so 1. I am not as active now compared to when I am working and 2. I am at a closer proximity to food. I think I do have a food addiction and I try to eat healthy because of it. I do not want to blame my husband but he does buy junk sometimes (like Cheetos) that I cannot seem to resist eating. I crave sweets and do admit eating-and drinking--too much lately. I am getting depressed about the whole weight gaining thing. I see my surgeon next week for my two year post op appointment. Thanks for reading my intro.

    Band Revision Patients?

Just had my lapband removed 12/15...was hoping to convert to RNY at the same time, but my stomach was too beat up getting it out to continue (band in 7 years and had erosion). So looking forward to the second surgery in Feb or March now. I feel so much better already! It is almost hard to explain. I am a little sad that I have to do everything over again like the preop tests, insurance, incisions, and preop diet... but I am so happy to have it out and looking forward to the revision. I originally needed/wanted the RNY but insurance would not cover any WLS at the time...so the Band was it for cost and less downtime. I had hoped it would be my forever tool, but it was causing pain and damage, with a not so pretty helping of weight gain. I wish I had not been so stubborn, tired, and honestly scared to start the revision process sooner! The process has taken over 8 months but definitely worth it. I wish you the best of luck! I just need to vent!=/

@@ivyh are you taking a steroid like prednisone? If you are on something like that it could be the meds that are making you more hungry as well as putting weight on you. Certain anti-depressants and even NSAIDS can cause Water retention etc. Don't give up, keep pressing Dr.'s to find out what's going on with you and see if they can find a medication that works with your weight loss goals but keeps you feeling good. The most important thing is your health so don't stress over the weight gain too much right now, light a fire under the Dr Try to if you can manage it to break up your meals into smaller more frequent portions so you feel like your eating something every few hours but keep your portions in check and that might help. I had to have Fluid removed recently and that is what is getting me through. Having something every few hours, and I have actually lost 4 pounds! Feel good and let us know what your Dr.'s say.

    My "only" concern!

Its a worry most people have, but unfortunately, once you've gotten fat, the loose skin has already happened. If you've got stretch marks and such, your skin is already damaged and it wont snap back perfectly, no matter what you do. Its the weight GAIN that causes the loose skin, not the weight loss, which is the reason why you cant do a darn thing about it. Just take one step at a time. Lose the weight then assess the damage. It is possible for skin to snap back if its not that damaged in the first place, mine is pretty OK after 3 pregnancies and a large weight loss, which is miraculous to me. Its not perfect, but it will do.

    surgery may 21st

One of the main reason for having the surgery is because of infertilty. I have PCOS and have been unable to have children. Having PCOS is part of the reason for the weight gain but I also have made some very bad choices. The pain was not unbearable but it was there. When I came out of surgery I was in a lot of pain but was given meds and felt a lot better. I guess it is different with everybody but the pain is not unbearable. Not eat really hasn't been a issue. I really haven't wanted to eat but I know that will soon change. It doesn't bother me to see my husband eat but I know soon that will change too. I hope this helps some....I am also doing a VLOG on youtube. Here is my username so you can link to my videos: hholly112002 you can watch some of the things I found important and I do have one update since the surgery and I will be posting another one today. Good luck all!!!!!

    Oprah Speaks for Millions

Actually, I noted Oprah's weight gain early on. In fact as she put the weight on, I realized that with all the help she had, she still put the weight back on. It helped me realize that I needed the WLS. Thanks Oprah!!!! 12 days away from a real life change. My only fear is that she really secretly did have LB surgery and gained it back. In other words, I only care if it is something I have to worry about after my band. She is a money making machine, I admire that.
  23. Thanks for the support. I lost 6 lbs after discharge (I waited a few days to weight myself because I am a nurse and know the weight gain from the Iv fluids was going to happen) but after waiting 5 days I had gained 3 lbs. Right now I am drinking about 32 oz of protein shake mixed with light and fit Greek non-fat yogurt to make 64 grams of protein a day and about another 40 oz of water or low cal/no cal fluids. My diet advanced to puréed soft foods such as tuna or chicken moistened and mashed potatoes as well as cottage cheese and soft foods. No real problems with digestion this far, broths and soups are good as well. I am definitely trying to watch the sodium intake. I guess I'm just nervous I'm eating the wrong things but I'm following my physicians plan. Thanks
  24. Is it possible that I am not eating enough and my body is going into starvation mode? I am trying to keep the right Protein in me, etc, my calories probably total 600-800 tops. I have started to add some real food, mushy stuff but now I am putting weight back on. My calories are still low seeing as I am less then a 1/4 cup on everything. One egg is not enough calories to push me way up over the limit. I think my body is going into starvation mode. Anybody have any thoughts?
