  1. Hi all As the title says, what will you have for Christmas dinner? Given the limited amount we all eat and that each meal is something special I was wondering what everyone will have? I don't have a clue for myself yet and being a vegetarian makes it even more interesting than usual. Martin.
  2. Oh, I just remembered another favorite of mine early-out. unjury chicken broth. (It's actually vegetarian!) I was sick of sweet, so it was nice to have something savory. High Protein, low calorie and did the job well those first weeks as I was recovery from surgery. Just as a warning, though it is high in sodium! So it won't do you any favors if you are retaining Water. I know it isn't a Protein shake, but it's a nice alternative to protein shake when you can't stand to have any more "sweet"!

    LittleBill's Ring of Fire Chili

I use a vegetarian chili recipe that chops up chickpeas in a food processor that gives it a meaty like texture. They make chili paste out of dried peppers and Water instead of chili powder. It's awesome. And around 100-120 cal per half cup. I make a big pot almost weekly since surgery. http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2012/01/best-vegetarian-bean-chile-recipe.html Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Food and Nutrition reorg?

I would be so appreciative of a vegetarian section as most of the recipes I see for post op are based around a meat for protein! What's about us plant based eaters! I'd love to share some great protein rich legume recipes! This website is so wonderful and continues to improve! The recipe idea would be a wonderful integration! I appreciate your hard work and tentativeness to incorporating new ideas! This is so great!
  5. i'm 27 years old and feel like i've come to a decision about my life. i've determined that after 20+ years of being overweight, mostly obese, that i never want to be this way again. all past diets and programs have been moderately successful, but the results are never lasting. i lost 10-15 pounds on weight watchers, but gained it all back plus 40. in college i shed 40 pounds and got myself to a much healthier 170 pounds (felt great), but gained it steadily back over 5 years or so. i find myself at the heaviest i've ever been (260 pounds, 38 BMI) and ready to make a lasting change. my wife has alot of concerns, citing complications with surgery and the permanence of change. she has never been more than 10 - 20 pounds overweight (she is now the heaviest she has been too). i feel that someone who has not lived their life as an obese person cannot truly grasp the humiliation of not being able to fit into the clothes you bought the week before, spending money on silly OTC remedies like "hot rox" or whatever the fat burner pill du jour is, or tearing through a huge plate of food and still being hungry. she is being as supportive as possible, and i know she wants me to be as thin and healthy as i want to be, but she keeps saying that i could accomplish the same thing with diet and exercise. i look at the success that people have with this and can think only of the good things... the way you'll feel after your first 20 pounds, hitting the halfway mark, fitting into old clothes you never thought you could again. am i romanticizing it? i could lose 100 pounds and be at a healthy 160 for my 5'9" stature. i can't even imagine what my life might be like. just some thoughts... has anyone's relationship suffered complications from this decision and/or the results from it? what are your stories? after the initial discomfort, is your life restricted in any ways other than food and beverage intake? i am also a vegatarian and am concerned about how that plays in... any other vegetarians on here? i would imagine i am a rare case of an obese vegetarian... thanks so much for whatever opinions you bring.

Power Juicers** Are they a no, no?

Health vs Cost.... which one will win? A bottle of any juice will never have the same nutritional value of FRESH, UNCOOKED, UNPASTURIZED vegetable juice that you make yourself. Centrifugal juicers whip a lot of oxygen into the juice, causing it to lose nutritional value quickly, so it's important to drink it ASAP if you use this kind of juicer. You can't juice it way ahead of time to store in the fridge for the day because, after an hour, it will have lost too much of its nutrition to be worth it. A twin-gear juicer would retain much of the nutritional value because of the gentle extraction of the juice. They are expensive and even I don't have one (getting it this year). I do have a manual juicer that I adore. It's small, portable, easy to clean, it uses no electricity so you can take it apart and just throw it in the dish washer. It was only about $50. Love it. I also have a large centrifugal juicer for home and a small one that I keep at work. You can also juice with your blender by putting the veggies in with a little Water, blend completely, then pour it all in a nut milk (mesh) bag to strain the juice from the pulp. You just hold the bag over a bowl and gently massage it to squeeze out the juicer. This is the fastest way to juice. I wouldn't suggest juicing fruits as this makes the sugars too readily available without their cell walls to slow the digestion. Even carrots and beets I would juice in moderation while on a weight loss program. I have my certification in Natural Hygenic Nutrition. I've been vegetarian for 20 years and RAW VEGAN on and off for years. I once juice fasted for 2 months straight. Nothing beats the feeling of fresh juicing. I believe it's worth every penny. You can google or look on eBay for "nut milk bag" or "nut mylk bag" or for Lexan juicer if you want to learn more. Here's the manual juicer I have: http://cgi.ebay.com/LEXEN-brand-MANUAL-WHEATGRASS-JUICER-wheat-grass-/320645648324 Mine is exactly the same. I have a pretty tote bag that I carry it in when I want to take it with me. It's very small and convenient and makes no noise since it's manual. Robin

What does your grocery list look like?

I don't eat meat but put the hurt on some seafood. I eat salmon almost everday a lot of flounder, mahi and shrimp. Tuna on occasion but try not too often for all the heavy metals. Gardien's vegetarian chicken is my new fave thing lately. Blood oranges, cuties, kiwis, gala apples and pine apple. Broccoli, spinach and lots of legumes.
  8. So, I have Kaiser Permanente in Northern California and Southern California, I guess it's the same but just mentioning both because I found out they consider themselves two things for some reason. After being very overweight for at least 6 years and generally overweight for at least 12 years...and doing everything from working out daily to diets to Weight Watchers to voodoo (j/k but almost lol), I decided that the Lap Band is what I wanted to pursue as an option. WELL, Kaiser doesn't seem to like to pay for this procedure. Which is fine, it is a radical decision and wouldn't want anyone to just say, "OKAY fine we'll do it!" without asking any questions. But I kind of feel jerked around. I'm doing this nutrition/diet program, which is all well and good, but the dieticians actually were insinuating that I wasn't "fat" enough to get a lap band >.< I'm 5'5, 258ish pounds, 44.6 BMI....this is off the charts as far as morbidly obese and unhealthy >.< the fact that they'd tell me I had to be "fatter" in order to qualify to get help seemed 1. rude and 2. hurtful and totally invalidating my feelings that I need a little extra help after years of doing it on my own. I've never had an over eating problem and am vegetarian, mostly my problems are eating at the wrong times, such as right before I sleep, and my other health issues, among some of the problems: Multiple Sclerosis, hypertension and constant pain (probably a lot to do with being overweight as well as the MS). It kills me to think that because Kaiser are jerks about their extreme views of what is "fat" that they would just totally invalidate me and make me feel stupid for inquiring about other options. I've looked up before what qualifications make someone eligible for the procedure and heck I think I meet them. Am I wrong to question what this person is saying? That I'm not "fat" enough? Or even worse, that there's nothing wrong with me even though, clearly, by health standards, and by my increasing health problems due to obesity, that I should just not pursue it? I think more than likely they just don't want to pay for it and I have to be more aggressive, but it's a little depressing to think I have to "convince" them I need help.
  9. First of all I talked to my nutritionist. I wanted to make sure she was aware that I was vegetarian and allergic to artificial sweeteners and stevia. I think did my homework. I spent 2 weeks reading and searching for Protein powders. I didn't eat jello or popsicles. The first 2 weeks I was on full liquids. I did a lot of FAGE 0% greek yogurt. I would mix it in the nutra bullet with Protein powder. I finally settled on Isopure unflavored. It's 100% whey isolate. No coloring's or sugars added. I also added cacao powder or ½ tbsp almond butter to my shakes. I also used vegetable broth. I pureed black Beans, strained the skins and thinned it out with veg broth. I drank organic Kefir. In the hospital I was given Pro-Source no carb. I mixed that with herbal tea first thing in the morning. I did use CVS whey protein powder for a bit. It has sucrolose in it. (Generic splenda) I didn't have too much of a reaction to it, but I switched to the Isopure since that mixes with hot or cold. I drank mostly water. Some very diluted apple juice. I found that I did better with lots of ice.

    Fresh Fruits and Veggies

A lot of people avoid carbs. Fruit has a lot of carbs. I follow the Mayo Clinic Diet...which is a slightly modified Mediterranean diet. I eat a metric feck ton of fruits and veggies, and a lot of complex low glycemic carbs. You will find people following many different diets after surgery. You'll find that different surgeon's groups have vastly different recommendations. Find a group that will work with your preferred healthy diet. There are a lot of ways up this mountain. Keto is very very popular right now. Hands down...it will give you the fastest results. Many people feel wonderful on this diet, but I don't. I prefer to eat a mostly vegetarian diet with meat consumed only occasionally..and my group is completely on board with this. What nearly all groups will require: 60g protein per day. (I get a lot of mine from plant sources..but I get 60g daily) 64ounces plus of water per day. 1200 calories or less per day after surgery. Vitamins.

How to avoid awkwardness during group meals?

So here is what I do... I lie..... Flat out lie. I say I have a special diet due to food allergies. Everyone seems to be more accepting of food allergies than " I am watching what I eat." Since many of my co-workers are vegan, or vegetarians, it's not a problem when I say food allergies. So I thank them for the food and just pick what works best for me. Really - after the first time, no one even questions anymore. I know its really hard.. be strong.

Protein and Water Intake 7 Days Post Op

My nutritionist said the first week I didn’t have to worry about getting protein so much, if my body doesn’t tolerate it, it’s ok. She said I can try drinking protein waters and bone broth (I’m a vegetarian, but I found a vegan protein vegetable broth), but the first week is just to rehabilitate, and keep it easy on the stomach.
  14. Hiya Cagstorm! Welcome to LBT. My whole family (my almost 11 year old, and husband) have become so much more active. We all eat so much better than before, and I think we are just more aware of our bodies, and what we are doing to them, and putting in them. I have never really subscribed to the whole "Protein first" thing. I eat a balanced diet, and while that (to me anyway) includes protein, it also includes veggies and carbs. But to answer your question, beans go down great! I would starve without them (I am vegetarian) I wish you the best of luck on your banded journey!
  15. I am 6 months post op at the end of this month and have lost 103 lbs so far. Have about 40-50 more to go to get to my goal. I used to be vegetarian/vegan and find myself wanting to get back to that lifestyle often. Any post op veg people have suggestions on getting the minimum 60g of protein required without the meat and without feeling like I'm having to eat constantly in order to meet that requirement? I'm still at the point that getting 60g is a struggle because I literally cannot eat that much food.

    Vegetarians...

StacyM, I am like you. I don't eat meat but I do eat seafood. "Amy's" brand is great for Soup. I they have lots of vegetarian ones like I just found one called "No Meat chicken Noodle Soup". I haven't tried it yet but all of the ones I have tried are wonderful. They have it at trader joes and also safeway and fred meyer in the organic section. I am still doing my 6 month diet but will stock up on that one for my pre and post op diets. Don't be scared of telling your surgeon that you don't eat meat. I told mine and was surprised to find out he and his whole family were vegetarians. So it can really benefit you because they will be able to tell you what you should be doing to get all of your Protein in for those first few weeks. You might also try a nutritionist. They can give you a specialized diet just for you. Good Luck!
  17. Dear Plumpy Pad, Odd little trait I have, huh? I appear with a vengence for a week or so and then BAM! I disappear for months! I am no longer a vegan, I was successful for 9 weeks before I couldn't stand my cheese cravings anymore... I am still a vegetarian. I posted some full body shots of myself wearing my Sunday house-cleaning finest today. I figure I'll put them here too, just so there is no way I can forget what I am trying STOP! Yes... Yes... I know. My husband is SUCH a lucky man! I am back on my calorie wagon. I have searched far and wide for as wonderful of a weight loss hub as there is here on the lapband site, but there just isn't one! I am hereto STAY! I swear I am going to give it my all this time! xoxox, Bridget

I am so so so angry

I think your husband may have expressed himself incorrectly, but yeah that was too much. I'm a vegetarian. I eat veggie burgers all the time. At 3½ weeks, I might have been able to eat half of a burger. Most people at your stage are eating between 2 - 4 ounces of food at a time.
  20. I am in the decision making process right now about the band. I have been a vegetarian for 5 years. i am just wondering if there are any other vegetarian bandsters and how they have fared. what did you eat? any ideas or tips? i know protein is really important afterwards..... just wondering!!!

    Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian?

I am not a vegetarian - I am a happy omnivore - but love fresh veggies. I agree with the person above that says your stomach can't take it for some time. I tried steamed asparagas at 3 weeks post surgery - and it caused intense stomach pain all evening and half the night. Now, at 6 weeks out, I can have steamed asparagas, steamed yellow squash, raw tomatoes, and raw cucumbers. I have eaten some salad greens, but have to severely limit my quantities.I am doing a lot of the milk based Proteins (cottage cheese, yogurt, low fat cheese) and the prepared proteins (nectar brand is great, as is Isopure PLUS). The only meat I am eating is chicken and shrimp - ground beef isn't setting well yet. Good luck.
  24. I'm on day 5 of a 14 day Atkins pre-op diet. Because I'm a vegetarian my NUT is allowing me 50 carbs daily instead of the usual 20. I've lost two pounds. Two. I'm really considering just going on a 7 day liquid fast. I tried to call my NUT to talk to her about this but they close early on Fridays. So until then I'll stay on what I was told but I'm really worried. What happens if your liver doesn't shrink because you don't lose weight? Any ideas?

Had a veggie burger and it was awesome

I have a friend who is a vegetarian and insists that I try one. All the ones she buys are pre-packaged in the freezer section. So, I'm curious to know if there are other options. I may try them.
