    Regrets

thank you for your response. I’m an actually at a stall right now. Actually I’m two pounds up from a week ago. No idea how as I’ve followed instructions to a T. I can only guess it’s constipation. I’m so frustrated. I also miss food so much even though I’m not hungry. It’s such a mind f**k. I do talk to my mom. That helps. And I just started sessions with a new therapist. I’m religious and prayer helps too. I hope things get better soon.
  2. I was told nothing over 10 lbs until after 6 weeks because that is when the stomach should be fully healed. Anything over. According to my surgeon, anything over 10 lbs. can cause a hernia at the incision site.
  3. It's been a fight. However, I am just waiting for a call from the doctor's office. I pray that the years of pain, throwing up, and uslers related to GERD will at the very least lesson! I know it will be a two to three week wait after next Monday. I believe this is the best thing to improve my quality of life! I am scared, excited, and blessed! From sleeve to bypass here, I come. Gastric bypass RNY 7/24/23

I’m finding out that i no longer love food the way I use to anymore. I just flat out don’t enjoy it as much as I really use to. Kinda annoys me a lil bit. Maybe it’s because of the purée stage. Maybe it will get better during the soft food stage. At this point I’d rather go back to liquid tbh. Idk. Just my opinion. As for weight loss I’m doing ok and I enjoy exercising now. So far just walking. Compression on my tummy makes me feel better too because my tummy feels like jello or pudding lol I like to be out all together in my opinion. I’m down 25lbs post op. If I add the 2 week liver reduction diet weight loss a total of 34lbs. How about you?
  5. So great that you're tracking your body fat. I have done three body fat DEXA scans. I was down to 18% when I hit my goal weight. I wish I had started earlier so I knew what my baseline was.
  6. I am pre op so have never been in your shoes. I'm so sorry to hear about your poor treatment, especially at such a vulnerable time. I had a similar situation, had a falling out with the nurse at my surgeon's office this week and my 8/15 surgery was cancelled. When I expressed my concerns it was all turned around on me. When they told me they were cancelling my surgery, after I was already off meds and on a liquid diet I had a major breakdown. I reached out to my primary care doctor - thinking I was seeking help for anxiety, but she was able to help me find a new surgeon and I now have a consult booked 8/23 and am hopeful again. Do you have a primary care provider who can intervene on your behalf to assist you to find a new provider for follow up care by any chance? I'm sending positive thoughts your way that you get the respectful treatment and care you deserve!
  7. What a crazy past week! I first posted here last Saturday about the doubts I was having about my gastric sleeve surgery scheduled for 8/15, not in regards to surgery, but concerns with the provider. Monday I expressed some of my concerns to the nurse, who is the bariatric program coordinator, and this lead her to deciding to take me off the surgery schedule, saying if I was going to rehash all the past issues I'd had with them, since these issues would only likely continue post op that it wouldn't be safe to do surgery as I wouldn't comply with post op care. She did say she'd consider reinstating my surgery date, but then started making a long list of demands... since I live out of town I had been told I needed to remain in town through Friday. Of course I booked a hotel from Wednesday-Friday (the plan was likely 1 night in the hospital, and then staying at the hotel 2 additional nights before being able to return back to my home town). She apparently didn't believe me and demanded I forward her my confirmation of booking a hotel room to her! Then she wanted me to make certain statements in writing on the patient portal so "she could take it back to the team" about staying in town, transportation, pain meds, post op care, etc. I was shocked by how horrible I was treated, she was literally yelling at me so loudly (while I was at work) that the conversation could be over heard by others and I had people coming up to me saying "who were you talking to?" in shock by it. I literally had a panic attack after her screaming at me and telling me she was taking my surgery off the schedule. She clearly has no idea the type of person I am: I have never in my life no showed a medical appointment. Have been at my current job 6 years and never clocked in so much as 1 minute late to work. I'm extremely reliable and responsible, so her telling me that I was incapable of following instructions (when the written diet she sent me was in fact incorrect). I don't blame her for that, as they are transitioning the program to the new surgeon so editing all their materials, but to tell me I am incapable of following instructions when she in fact gave me incorrect instructions, and her saying she didn't believe it was safe to do surgery just completely blew my mind! Tuesday she informed me they were going to "keep me off the schedule as a final decision" and I was pretty much despondent and wasn't even able to go to work yesterdady as I pretty much cried all day long. I went to see my primacy care provider, thinking this insane experience had thrown me over the edge and that I needed help for anxiety before I could even think about surgery further, but I actually left very encouraged to keep moving forward. They have referred me to another surgeon and I have a consult on 8/23! I will NOT allow this horrible experience to deter me. My primary care provider told I dodged a bullet and I need to keep moving forward. I thought I went in to ask for some anxiety meds/mental health assistance- something, but the words of encouragement and motivation to keep moving forward were 1000 times better! That being said I am seeing Dr. Tarin Worrest in Missoula, MT on 8/23. By any chance has anyone had surgery with her? Also, any one else have any surgeon suggestions in Montana? My insurance is largely a Montana network so not a whole lot of options, but if anyone has any suggestions for surgeons in the Allegiance network I'd love to hear them!

    GB Stalls - 8mos out

stalls became more frequent the further out I got. And they tended to last longer, too. Every time I'd hit one, I'd think "well, this must be it...", but then my weight loss would eventually start up again. I kept losing until about the two year mark. It was slow going after the first year, though.
  9. Hey everyone. Question for those greater than 8mos out. Is there a stall period with Gastric Bypass before your 12-18mos window of opportunity or was weight loss consistent with a slowing down period? I’m 8mos out and the weightloss has slowed down. I’m actually happy at this weight, 70lb loss and 5’11. But wondering if I should expect more weightloss through the 12mos period? My surgeon stated that he expected me to be around 205-220 as a good weight. I’m currently at 222. Any information is appreciated
  10. My surgeon told me I was okay to start doing heavier weight lifting at four weeks. Obviously, I would stick as closely as possible to what your doctor said though.
  11. So, I work with a lot of heavy lifting (wine boxes and loading them into u-boats, etc) and work has been accommodating to me, but I noticed that I was scheduled for a shift to basically go back into that on my 5th week from surgery date and I was advised to not do heavy lifting until the 6th week; is it going to cause complications? Or do you think it'll be manageable? 😬
  12. Just make sure you're taking progress photos for yourself. It crazy to look back and comes in handy during a stall.

Those first weeks are definitely hard. I was SOOO tired of liquid and puree and soft foods. But, it does get better. Especially as the weight comes off and health issues improve. The compliments are definitely confidence boosting. Things that can help are talking to someone about how you're feeling. It's a very emotional time right now. I cried a lot too and my therapist was a tremendous help walking through all the emotions I was feeling. Thank you for sharing.

    September surgery buddies!!

I don’t track my calories too closely because I was developing unhealthy restriction habits when I was tracking. While 1000 calories isn’t my forever, I also started with a lot more to lose than most people (410 lbs to 210 lbs currently) and it’s still a reasonable calorie intake for my current weight/exercise level. Also, more important than calories is keeping my Protein ratio high; my 1000 calories hovers somewhere around 60% protein, 20% fat, 20% carbs. Just keep in touch with your dietitian. As far as exercise is concerned, I split my workouts into 20 min cardio + 25ish min core training or yoga in the morning, and 10 min warmup + 45 min strength training in the afternoon and once a week I skip the lifting and swim laps for 45 min instead. Strength training is my happy place.

    Pain after surgery?

Thank you. Funny thing is that I honestly didn't put a whole lot of thought into it until a week ago. I stopped and thought wow I haven't had as much body pain - the knee pain and lower back pain has lessened by a lot. Of course it's not completely gone because age factors in, lol, but it's too the point I didn't have to really think about it. Longer walks and climbs up the stairs doesn't take the wind out of me and I live and commute in NYC so lots of walking and stairs to tackle. I had lost 100+ lbs a few years ago (took far longer of course) and maintained it for awhile until pandemic times when i went back to where I started. So to be back to before pandemic weight feels great. I'm hoping to hit the 100lb gone and get into onderland by end of year. *fingers crossed* Best of luck to you on your surgery, it's certainly life changing and worth it.

    Pain after surgery?

Every body is different and tolerance for pain is different. I was definitely uncomfortable as so much movement relies on the core, but not in a huge unbearable pain way. I was given 6 Percocets of which I only took 3 - 1 pill at night just to sleep better as I couldn't sleep on my side and it was not the best sleep on my back. If i needed anything else daytime, I just took tylenol. I did not get crazy pain until week 2 and a half when the pulling in my side nearly knocked me out. However that was remedied with a binder that I wore for just a few days until the worst of it passed. Now at 4 months post-op I barely remember those days and would change nothing.

    September surgery buddies!!

Minimum an hour a day, 7 days a week. Sometimes 1.5 hours. But I also don’t love exercise so I had to find things I enjoyed or at least find tolerable. For me my top choices are swimming, water aerobics, and walking. I need to do more strength training because more muscle burns more calories.

    September surgery buddies!!

I’m down 175 lbs since 9/12/22 and currently eat 1700-1900 calories a day. I’ll hit my surgeon’s goal in the next 1-2 weeks and I’m about 30 lbs from my personal goal. You can damage your metabolism staying at 800-1200 calories for life. I have adjusted very slowly first going to 1400, then 1500, 1600, and now I try for 1700 but do go as high as 1900. On vacation I ate 2500+, gained 3 lbs and lost 5 the week I got back. I am very concerned about disordered eating and a lifestyle that is sustainable long term. I do exercise quite a bit, mostly because I genuinely love food and want to be able to indulge in small ways without stalling my progress too much. It’s about balance.

    1st post op appointment

Congrats that all sounds great! I just hit my 4th month post-op visit myself this week. It's always great when you have a good surgeon and med team who are attentive and encouraging. Makes a world of difference. Keep rocking your progress.

20lbs in four weeks is great. You should be celebrating it. Remeber, everyone is different but keep at it and it will come

3 week post op update- I'm down 8 lb since my surgery 7/20 I was hoping for more, but I gained about 9 lb during surgery and the day after from all of the IV fluids. To be fair, I've never lost more than a pound or so per week, so this is still really good. I would love to lose 20 lb a month, but I'm ok with a consistent 2 lb per week. I've been working with my nutritionist and weighing myself daily to track trends. It also helps me catch things quickly and readjust. I started eating ginger chews after surgery to help with nausea and realized I was going a little too ham on them! (That's how I got here in the first place) So even though there are natural fluctuations, daily weight and food tracking has been a powerful tool for my nutritionist and I.

    1 Day Post Op

Yes I did my blood thinner injections for two weeks post op. They are easy to do and the needle is so thin that I barely felt it. I would keep an eye on the blood in your urine though and perhaps contact your bariatric team to report it.

Can't get rid of the quote boxes I am back in hospital again. I collapsed on the nurse when she came for her morning check up on Monday morning so she called me an ambulance. Had an allergic reaction to the antibiotics plus a leak from pancreas in to stomach area. Two clips applied and I'm now on a feeding tube for a week. This has all been hell.
