What is the real point of this surgery?
JeanZ_RN replied to powaqqatsi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
McButterpants says it very well, especially this: "The sleeve will only stop you from eating copious amounts of food in one sitting. It doesn't stop you from going back to the bag of chips 30 minutes later when you can fit more into your sleeve. The sleeve is simply one tool in your tool box.." Here's my added 2 cents... I was very fortunate in that I was not hungry at all for 2-3 months post op. I ate because I knew I should. When my hunger returned it wasn't as intense as before, and by then I had established my new eating habits which helped a LOT. Now I eat every 4 hours (8a, 12n, 4p and 8p), and I keep my carb intake as low as humanly possible. Both factors contribute to my never being hungry for very long at a time. What keeps me on track when I could never stick to a diet before: The feeling of satisfaction / fullness after each meal, plus the decreased hunger, is the main thing that makes it possible for me to stick to the plan. I do get head hunger sometimes, and when I can't ignore it I have a SF popsicle or some SF Crystal Light. If those don't work and I indulge in a cookie, I can now stop with one - which I could never do before. I've lost a significant amount of weight doing this, so I KNOW it works. I've been able to stick to the plan for 7 months now, which is way longer than diets I tried before surgery. I will be da**ed if I'm going to throw away the $12,500 I paid out of my pocket to have this done, not to mention all the work I've done (and the goodies I've resisted eating) to get to this point. Sometimes I just repeat to myself, as many times as necessary "I'm not going to eat that. Not gonna do it. There will be goodies available when I'm at my goal." And I walk away from the temptation. The support available on this site and on the Facebook group I belong to is PHENOMINAL. It helps SO much, especially at those times when family/friends would probably beat me to death if I mention one more thing about the trials and tribulations -- or the NSVs -- related to being sleeved. Hope that helps. Best wishes. -
Anyone have any "NSV" to share? I've noticed lately people sit next to me on the bus, they would always avoid me in the past! Kinda miss that ..hahaha

Love this idea!!!!!NSVs are what it's all about!! Just went shopping! Shirt Before 2xl now xl Pant size Before 22 now 16 Bra Before 42ddd now 38ddd I also fit comfy in an airplane seat! Road behind someone on a motorcycle without dropping the back three inches! My office chair is way too big now! My coworkers refer to me as skinny! I'm trying to stay positive everyday. Lots to be thankful for. -
Life has gotten in the way the last 2 months. I was unable to take care of me the way I was supposed. Not exercising, not enough Protein all sorts of things. I gained 8lbs. Now 3 weeks ago I was sitting here crying feeling like a failure. I'm back on track in the last 3 weeks. walking 3 miles a day, getting my protein and Water. I have lost those 8lbs. I haven't had a fill in two months.I go for one tomorrow. There will be no great loss, but no gain and I realized I'm good with that. I can't beat myself up for no being able to take care of myself (I was the primary care giver for my MIL the last 3 months and she passed a month ago). I've lost 60lbs since surgery in November. One hundred total since last May. When I think of it that way I'm pretty proud of how far I have come in the last year. So now onto the NSV. I can ride my bike without the seat hurting my rearend. Pretty happy about that. I haven't been able to do that in about 3 years. So all in all a good week for me. Thanks for listening.

Congrats! I would count that as an NSV! Frankensleeve didn't like any vegetables till around the 6 month mark. Lettuce was just too tough for him. :-)

What's your favorite change since the surgery?
Sunnybaby replied to Disabledaccount's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say that my favorite NSV so far is that I went from a size 20W to a 14 in 5.5 weeks! A whole 40 pounds gone. Oh, also that I can shop in my closet now for clothes I haven't worn in AGES because I was too big to fit into any of them. It's exciting! -
Wow!! What a wonderful NSV this morning. I got to a meeting late in one of the conference rooms and all the chairs near the door were taken. It meant going all the way around the table to the front to grab a seat. Before I lost the weight, it would have meant unbelievable embarrasement to me as all the folks already sitting down would have had to pull their chairs all the way in just so I could squeeze past them. I had to do it once or twice before and it was awful. It got to the point that I always made sure to get to those meetings early so I could grab a seat right by the door so I wouldn't have to squeeze past anyone getting in or out of the room. So like I said, I was late today and knew I was going to have to get around all the others already seated. Well...hallelujah!! No one had to move in, I didn't have to squeeze my big ass body past anyone...this newly slender gal just walked past all the chairs and sat down at the front of the table. Whatever I had to go through in order to get to this place in my life was so worth it just to know that I don't have to deal with things like this anymore. What a great feeling it is.

I thought of that, but I was over a year out when I got the idea and I didn't have many NSVs left, so I went with the fitness charms to motivate me to keep moving. I have a bucket list of races I want to do after I heal including another Ragnar, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I want to do a marathon and a triathlon some day.

What's your favorite change since the surgery?
920amy replied to Disabledaccount's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My favorite NSV is probably that I can go shopping in 'normal' stores and not have to worry about the clothes not fitting, or be exhausted to try clothes on in the fitting room, I also love when I try something on and it's too big. I like having the problem taht all of the little sizes are sold out in a atyle and all they have are sizes that are too big left instead of the opposite problem. I've always been a clothes whore...now it's twice as bad, but my budget is 4 times as big, because I'm not spending the money on food and high end clothes, and smaller clothes are about half the price. P.S. I also LOVE that my thighs no longer rub!!! -
February/March 2014 sleevers

Hair sheds when dry and there is a handful when wet. Ugh. I just had a big loss but pretty sure I'm now in a stall. No scale so my daily weighing habit is on hold (I'm on vacation). Loving all the NSV's though. -
So happy with this sleeve ! 8 weeks out

Congrats on having such a great recovery. I would count that as your 1st NSV if you haven't started counting them yet! -
I love this idea. And you could even (with some creativity) add non-fitness oriented NSVs too, like a shopping bag for having to replace your wardrobe, and a plane for not having to wear a seatbelt extender, etc. So fun, and congrats on your accomplishments!

Loving my new charm bracelet that has charms for all my fitness NSVs! So far: plumeria flower for Maui Half Marathon, engraved charm for OKC memorial half, ragnar charm for the Miami to Key West Ragnar Relay, and tiara for the Disney Princess Half. Looking forward to adding more in the future, but taking a break right now for orthovisc injections in my knee and plastics next month.

A new small NSV for me. I needed a white belt for my summer white jeans and shorts. Being that I had a massive huge waist I bought an xl. Too big and they didn't have a smaller size, so took it and had holes made. Was in Kohl's the other day and bought 2 size large belts and they fit and past the first hole. My weight has not changed in about 1 year but I guess inches are changing which is wonderful for me. Yesterday I wore a size large maxi skirt from Gap and I looked great. I don't know how to down load pictures, that is why you never see any of me. Needed to share. Thanks for listening. Arlene

Lylabelle maybe you would post a list on here and FB - the abbreviations and what they mean so we are all on the same page and providing the same information!? NSV is one I am stuck on!! Thank you, in advance! -
It finally happened to me. I'm down 35 pounds since surgery (jan 22). Today I tried on 2 pairs of my old jeans (size 14) and they fit. Woohoo. Seriously love the feeling of not being afraid to get dressed and see myself in the mirror. And not only that it gives me such motivation to continue this journey and get to my goal of 150. I have 47.5 and half pounds to go and I know I can do it!

Week 2: May 27-31st Sleevers
tiredtwinmommy replied to lylabelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well here are my stats as of this am: Start weight was 189 ( that is as I was doing my preop diet) May 29 surgery weight was 183 Weight today is 171 NSV I can now wear my engagement and claddaugh rings hubby gave me when we were married 17 and a half years ago. I am fitting into smaller clothes in my closet. Challenges: it is tough when my family is eating all these tempting smelling things around me. But I have not given in and I will not give in bc I know this is head hunger, plus I am scared to pieces of leaks! I am basically having my protein shakes water and sf Popsicles during the day. I have tried stuff a little more "substantial" like puréed beans sf pudding and low carb yogurt, but gurgulina (my sleeves name) sings and complains for quote a while afterward so I get scared I am pushing it too soon. -

Its monday all!! Time to check in! Let us know any NSVs of the week and give us your sugery date number! Ill put it up on our new thread tomorrow so we can see how everyone is doing at a glance No bit nsv. but Im down -13 from surgery!! -
Yes, ma'am, that's a bonafide NSV. So is the increase of the reps. Same here with my love for the pool. It's the one place I can exercise with no issues. I take an exercise class 2-3 times a week and if I can fit it in, I do laps as well. That pool saved me for sure. You have a great day as well Mikee.

LOL! I read this as tongue in cheek. But, I guess if it really matters, it is important! I bet that your little pockets are there because the clothes are little, imagine the big pockets on little jeans, how funny looking that would be! Great NSV anyway!
-
thanks again Gowalking...then I had a NSV this morning...put my shorts that I wear over my swimsuit and they were loose...is that a NSV. I couldn't get a full mile in the pool done this morning due to a car issue...but I was able to increase the reps of my leg exercises (that I did after my knee replacement surgeries that I now do in the pool) up 10 reps now...so I will do alittle extra walking today at work on land...love love love the pool though...LOLRH!!! Have a great day GoWalking!!!

Good for you SJ! Hooray for NSVs to keep us going! My odd NSV this week has been on a few separate occasions having a panic attack while driving because I thought I wasn't wearing my insulin pump. I remove it to change clothes and a few times over the 10+ years I have had them have actually forgotten it at home when I run errands. I guess it doesn't dig into my sides like it used to and I'm more comfortable when sitting. It's one of those funny little things you don't notice until its not there anymore.
